I am sitting here watching NFL Total Access before the monday night game and they had Brian billick and Jim Mora talking about the coaching situation in Dallas and they said and I quote:

"Mike Holmgren will not go to Dallas unless there is a serious structure change"

I am NOT saying Holmgren will leave, but I am asking....do you think there is a chance Holmgren leaves after this year?

I am praying he doesn't..why would he build such a FO and everything, bring in his own guys and then leave?

I am only asking because Jerry Jones is a snake and his treachery knows no bounds, he will try everything he can to get Holmgren away from us if he thinks Holmgren is his man

My question is:

Holmgren couldn't leave to coach could he? I mean he is President here...he can't go any higher and coach would be more or less a lateral or less then lateral move so he couldn't leave under those terms right?

Someone reassure me here we finally got something good going...we can't lose Holmgren.....

after lebron, i'm not saying anybody is sticking around.

randolph is paying him quite a chunk of change. i would hope that he honors that. and his promise to him.

rizzo from wknr brings up a really good point too. going home at 5 is nice. that goes bye bye when you coach. mangini is a young guy and can handle it. i don't know if mike wants that. i'm not so sure he wants to coach. but never say never.

I really hope these guys on NFL Total Access are just making stuff up...I really hope Holmgren don't leave......we need Holmgren more then anything right now...

we can't lose him....believe it or not I think Holmgren is a big part of the growth of Eric Mangini and this team as a whole...we need Holmgren...I would rather have Holmgren in his current position then not having the guy at all..

I am much more concerned with Ryan leaving. I hope Garret does a great job to finish out the season.

Total Access is probably the worst show on TV. There is so much rumor and opinion that I find it the least credible source in the NFL. The talking heads there, Jamie Dukes in particular are fools. These are cheerleaders for the league favorites who like to act as if they are some kind of experts. I'm not crazy about ESPN, but compared to Total Access, they are much more credible.

I liked the idea of the NFL Network, but after watching it for a couple years, I find it to be crap. There is no objective reporting there, just over bloated opinions from mediocre loudmouths.

Holmgren has too much integrity to walk out on Lerner, at least after one year. He is being lauded as the reason the franchise is turning around. How would he look walking out on a deal after just starting it. To me this is all dribble and the same made up crap that comes out everytime a coach gets fired. How many times was it said that no way Holmgren would keep Mangini with guys like Gruden and Mariucci out there.

Rumors and made up BS. Garret should have been the HC when they hired Wade. IMO he should be the first guy in line.

I agree with this. And, no one would blame the guy. If he does that well, he deserves it. Hopefully we'd be like New England and just find someone else who can do the job well for us.

As for Holmgren, I have a feeling he's sticking around. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would enter this job, tell Lerner he's going to see this through, and then bolt after 1 year. Does that mean he won't do that? No. But I would be pretty surprised.

Holmgren couldn't have been so short-sighted to think that there wouldn't be some pretty sweet coaching gigs opening up after this season.

i believe ryan was on record for saying he would take the raiders job if it was ever offered to it (this was before the season, obviously the raiders are seeing some success.

I agree, may be if Ryan leaves, we can get Wade Philips to be our DC. He was pretty good at that in San Diego.

Holmgren leaving would suck, but I'd hope we could keep Heckert here as GM, and hope that Heckert keeps EM if the team continues it's improved to play. Of course Heckert would have to have final say over the 53 and legitimately be above Mangini

I dont think Holmgren wants anything to do with Jerry Jones.
Lerner is like the anti Jerry Jones. And Holmgren likes Lerner.

KoB, for what it is worth. At Berea TC this summer I was one of the "special guests" for a day. Holmgren spoke to us about why Cleveland, and it was a bunch Lerner and the honest sense of commitment. I will never say never; but I think he may coach again. Sounded committed to this first, not as a bucket list thing, like last football thing he will ever do. I wouldn't be surprised to find him coaching again; based on my own nothing, I would coach here if I wanted to take my plan one more step. To coach with less control, less FO help, and a lot of what is in place and hopefully starting to work, why go? The show must have been desperate to find some Cleveland thing or another so they had a fox-style spot about the Walrus. Hope he stays. I wouldn't count on Ryan to be a DC next season. He is making a name for himself.

Holmgren isn't a team hopper. He builds winners before he moves on. That seems to be the legacy he wants for himself.

Since he's under contract, I wonder if he left if there'd be compensation - kind of like the Gruden deal years ago.

Phillips is a good DC, and I thought about him, but I think he and Mangini have quite different philosophies. Mangini runs a 2 gap 3-4, and Phillips runs a 1 gap. Maybe Mangini is willing to make some sacrifices there, but I kind of doubt it.

I have a feeling Holmgren can leave if he wants to leave.

It's all in the contract, and since we don't know what is in the contract, no use speculating.

I doubt he would want to go there.

I think -- let me emphasize -- I THINK that Holmgren would have to ask Lerner to release him from his contract in order to take a coaching job with another organization. So if such a move were to happen, and Randy chose to release him, he wouldn't have to pay the balance of the contract as Holmgren himself, in effect, will have dissolved it.

At this point a smart fan would be far more concerned about keeping Mangini and his coaching staff in place then they would the team president.

All do respect to Holmgren, but he isn't the guy handling the X's and O's, Mangini and staff are and they are what makes this thing go, or not go………….

Hell I would be a whole lot more concerned about Heckert leaving then I would Holmgren at this juncture and Hekert isn't going anywhere.

But the part I don't get is why even bring up Holmgren's name, unless Jerry gave Mike the control he has here in Cleveland and somehow bought off Lerner Mike can't go anywhere contractually and quite frankly I would think working for Lerner would always be preferable to working for Jones. These guys are full of themselves and bringing up Mike’s name is just name dropping on there part there is zero to it is my take. They go from Mangini being fired and Mike taking control of the team, to Mike leaving and going somewhere else, which is it?

I even read an article saying that the joining of Mike and Eric was the equivalent of a shot gun wedding. What BS these guys float honestly. I keep saying it if Mike didn’t want Eric he should have fired him. If Mike didn’t want Eric he owed it to us the fans and the Browns organization to fire Eric. He didn’t from then on Mike was bound by his word to Eric, us fans, and the Browns organization to do everything he can or could to help this team become a winner. I see nothing that tells me that Mike has done anything less then what he said. But the rumors and the BS keeps piling up.

My guess is the media see’s a good thing for the Browns coming just around the corner and their beginning to wonder what will do to screw it up. Not this time, this time we stick it out and get our just reward. A SUPER BOWL CHAMPIOSHIP TEAM………..

The Dallas thing should stand testament to how important team is over talent. We have a team; Dallas has talent, which one would you choose? Those guys play awful together............... That team is a train wreck and it is going to totally implode and Jones is powerless to stop it. Too many players on that team thinking they are bigger then the team. Their dysfunctional and nobody will fix them without them shedding some of the talent they have and replacing them with guys that play for the team and not themselves. This is the ultimate team sport and all the parts rely on all the other parts to be winners and Dallas is so far removed from that idea they can’t even see it…………

this.

Only thing Holmgren has done, that we know of, is use his power to draft Colt McCoy. I'm hoping that "only" thing becomes a real significant move though for Cleveland for YEARS to come.

Oh I wouldn't sell what Holmgren has done short he brought stability to this organization if by doing nothing else he stood by Mangini and that was huge.

Bringing in Hekert was huge and revamping the FO and scouts was huge as well. He made the FO functional. And that has dragged this team down repeatedly. The FO is now stable, and that has led to stability on the football field. It hasn’t translated in the number of wins we would all like yet, but that’s a by product of stability. To often in our recent past the unsettled state of the FO has had devastating results on the field; that’s behind us now and Mike was huge in that roll.

In every aspect this team is more stable. The only negative if it’s a negative is that we have like 16 players whose contracts are going to expire at the end of this season. But the Browns like every other team in the league are holding back on re-signing players due to the CBA. I would like to think that some of the players regardless of the state of the CBA should be re-signed before this season is over, but what the hell do I know on that front. I’m just a fan and there are guys I really want to have stay here for the long haul that I see as instrumental in the future of this team. I’m certain the front office see’s it that way too, but to date nobody in the league has signed players that have expiring contracts. Well I should say few players have gotten new deals.

I think eventually will begin to see teams and the Browns begin to re-sign players. I get a sense that Mike likes to keep players hungry.

Exactly.... do NOT sell Holmgren's part short. To put it mildly, he is that credible leadership atop the mountain.

He knows football, he knows organizations... he put this animal together and if he left that position, there'd be a giant, sucking void at the top and we don't have any credible personalities big enough to fill that void and hold it all together. He IS our foundation and stability.

My guess is that he won't leave after one year. He seems to be a man of character that will keep his commitment.

Does he miss coaching? I bet he does. it's in his blood.. Who wouldn't.

But at 62 years old, my guess is he's much smarter than that and will stick it out here to see it through..

As for him in Dallas,, I don't see that happening. He's already had the second banana spot in an organization pulled out from under him once, I doubt he goes to dallas under any circumstances given the "Jerry Jones" experience.....

I really believe that Holmgren is smarter than that..

Now, having said all that,, who knows. who really knows...

I agree.

Holmgren is a guy that wants total control. He wants to oversee all football aspects of the team. I think he's smart enough to know that he won't have a good experience with JJ.

I also think that his comment about wanting to coach was blown way out of proportion. Crazier things have happened, but I don't see it happening. Rob Ryan will be a head coach before Holmgren.

Right now, I fear losing any of our coaching staff or FO. Keep the group together and keep building.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

This is a non-story ... Dallas can't even TALK to Holmgren without permission from Lerner, unless it's for a promotion. Since Holmgren is already Team President, there isn't much more to offer in terms of a position unless Jones wants to make Holmgren owner. So it's over ... nothing more to see here.

At any rate, why would Mike leave? He already makes bank here, and has full control of everything in the organization ... with a hands-off owner. In Dallas, he'd have Jones leaning over his shoulder and pulling rank during the draft process and every other key decision.

Wasn't the comment something like, "I miss coaching"? Of course he misses it! He grew up doing it, and now he's moved on to other things. I miss my college days, but I don't plan on going back ... I miss living in Ohio, but I'm staying put here in San Diego. This is just your typical pathetic media, baiting him with a question: "Do you miss coaching" ... him answering with an expeted: "Well, of course" ... and then the media putting words in his mouth, desperate to sell stories: "Holmgren wants to return to coaching!"

Like someone else said before, he might have a clause in his contract where he can leave to coach. I doubt he has that but it's a possibility.

Parcells had a clause in his contract with the Dolphins that said if the owner changed he could leave at any time with full pay.

I wouldn't be surprised or mad if Holmgren left. He has set up our front office, not only with Heckert, but he hired Bryan Wiedmeier and Fred Nance as well.

I think it's obvious Holmgren wants to coach. He can't coach the Browns. That means he would have to leave. And Jerry Jones would throw money at him.

If he did leave we would just need to find someone to take over his role as president Bryan Wiedmeier has done it before.

yeah, i mean would you rather have a boss who's constantly standing over your shoulder, nitpicking moves, getting in the way, or would you rather have a guy who's either hundreds of miles away in nyc or thousands of miles away in the uk, who in either case is sipping tea and eating scones?

i will take randolph. at least randy has the smarts to get the hell out of the way and let organization operate.

you know for the first time in a while, i actually agreed with what the commentators at bspn said. they said something along the lines of, people need to stop talking about how talented dallas is. they really aren't"

i agree. people get so infatuated with skill positions that you forget about the meat of the team.

people had the lions higher than the browns, simply because they had a qb-rb-wr combo better than cleveland. what about the other 50 guys on the team?

maybe in fantasy football, but i really like how this team is being built. they're tough. they are good where they need to be.

Show of hands...

Who thinks Jerry Jones would ever release his control and say in the team?

Who thinks even if he says he will, that he will?

Who thinks Holmgren wants to be in a situation like that?

Case Closed.

I think that he will slightly after he becomes like Al Davis has become (too old and senile to really do his team any good).

but, the succession plan is already in place. Stephen Jones already is in control of personnel (on paper) and will just become the new 'Jerry'

No way. See post above. JJ is an arrogant man that does not know when to shut it. I can't stand looking at him or hearing him! I went to the GB game Sunday night and sat behind the Cowboys bench. He was out there giving an interview. Some fan came down the stairs with a JJ swallows shirt on and hollered at him. Not sure if he looked up or not but that was great!!

No way MH leaves for that horrible situation down there.

I don't want to be a negative nelly around here (when we have no shortage on any given day) but I'd like to be cautious about how we treat our coaches right now.

I remember all of the exact same talk, the EXACT same talk about Grantham, about Chud and even RAC. We gave ridiculous extensions to RAC and Chud (that we're still paying IIRC) at the first sniff of success.

Now I love Rob Ryan and I think he's the type of coach we need around here. He's brash and he's a soldier but save for this season, he's had a pretty spotty record. Could be many reasons for that I know but it's not like the guy has built the steel curtain yet (that reference hurt but it is what it is).

I love the guy and I hope the best for him. It just seems a little Chud-like at the moment.

Well, at least Jones is used to Davis. He was there during the time they were really good in the early 90's.. so, yeah, I think it's probably a good match...

Ya know, Davis might not be a bad HC but he was terrible at being the top guy in the organization..... had he just remained a HC coach here, he might still be here. dunno..

Rob Ryan has had success in the past though. He's had a heck of a lot of success though you are correct in that he was not the DC on a top5 overall defense in the NFL (if that's the only standard you want to look at).

I have written it in more detail before, but here's the cliff notes version:

1st DC job was at a JUCO where he immediately led the league in sacks and total defense and set a record in TO's.

DB coach for AZ Cardinals after that and led the NFL in INTs (also they were a top5 defense though he was not the DC)

OkieState DC next for 3 seasons where they continually were top10 in sacks and total defense and TOs.

then, LB coach for the NE Patriots during their Superbowl runs. LBs all had their best years when Rob Ryan was their coach (McGinest and Bruschi in particular)

Raiders DC next. Had some really good years at pass defense though their run defense never really met the standards he had set elsewhere. Look at Asomugha for a CB in particular that misses Rob Ryan (he hasn't been the same the past 2 years w/o him).

Now, our DC.

That's a heck of a long track record to be "Chud-like"

Yeah, if the 49ers come calling, it could be all over.. and really, who could blame him, that's his home area, that's the team that first gave him his start in the NFL and the tradition is there..

He'd really be the perfect fit for them.

I bet you that if the D keeps playing as it has, Ryan will be gone somewhere..

I just hope to hell he's smart enough to pass on Dallas if that's offered to him...

The question is "If you think you're really close to hitting the big time with the Browns and becoming known as one of the Smart Boys, do you jump ship early or after the Process is complete?"

I understand Ryan wanting to be a Head Coach. I just think he'd be deferring his entry into the Land of the Contenders with a trip through the Land of the Lost if he jumps ship after this season. NFL teams that are hiring generally have problems. The teams I see needing coaches after this season aren't exactly great positions. He can and should be very picky about where he goes from here.

Holmgren leaving? I doubt it. He'll be working on his Legacy for a while longer. Again, if he pulls this off in Cleveland he'll be generally regarded as the smartest guy in Football since Paul Brown himself. He's got a coach here that he doesn't need to fire and by all accounts isn't stupid. I give him a couple of years before he gives in to the siren song and even then it's going to take a pretty interesting offer.

I don't know what kinda guy Ryan is,,, His brother says he's very loyal to Mangini.. so that might cause him to want to stay put to see it through. Not sure.

As for Holmgren, he strikes me as a guy that doesn't want to leave things half finished. So maybe he'll stay put...
