So this story keeps showing up in the news. Groups are protesting the full body scanners at airports saying it's an invasion of privacy.
Just wanted to get peoples take on this, as I am all for it. I keep listening to these fools talk about "privacy" issues. I can't believe people would potentially place hundreds of lives in jeopardy over "privacy" issues.

So is it just me or do these things look like they are essentially x-ray machines? For frequent fliers/businessman, this can't be healthy to be exposed to these repeatedly.

I'm not concerned. If anything whoever is watching is just going to be impressed. In all seriousness, I'm more concerned about their health effects. Enough people have raised issue about it that I think the saying "where there's smoke there's fire" applies.

They could end the controversy by providing an image of a typical scan.
... my guess is that they can see the dimples on your tail.
you can request a metal detector and full body search as well.
I think it is a bit over the top. No one has explained in a coherent manner what improvement exist over the traditional screening methods.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

I say abolish TSA and turn it over to the Airline Companies.
Then the private businesses have the right to refuse service to whomever they feel like it. If you don't submit to their search you don't get on.
It's no longer a 4th amendment issue.

I agree with you that it should be turned over to the airline companies.
However, I hate the scanners. I think it's a horrible invasion. What stops them from "randomly pulling out" a whole bunch of attractive girls just to see what they're sporting? Creepy much?
I think it's more false sense of security from the government and regulatory committees and agencies. If you want to spend money and are really concerned about airplane security, keep the metal detectors, get a drug sniffing dog for every security check point, and maybe...just maybe...it would be nice to put security personnel on the airplane and reinforce cockpit security.
But for the love of God, please stop with the full body imaging of the x-ray scanners. Flying is a necessity for a lot of people who shouldn't have to stand like they're surrendering in battle while images are made of their junk. Oh, and they're also getting radiation shot at/through them.
I'm tired of it.

At what point do we just stand up and say enough is enough? Right now, some people are saying enough is enough... Keep in mind that most of this backlash is not necessarily against the Security Scanning Machines, but the issue is that the TSA is changing the way they do the pat down, which was the option if you did not want to go through the machines.. Now the TSA's patting is getting closer to be what would be considering sexual assualt. That is what is creating the big backlash because now it is either the scanning machine, which some don't want to go through because they fear health risks or don't want someone seeing their naked body or they have a choice of what they deem is sexual groping.
At some point we do need to say enough is enough. I think this new grope procedure is going a little too far and is probably more of a ruse to get more people to be more comfortable about going into the machines. Apparently, the security measures we had going were working because they went more to shipping parcel bombs instead. At some point, they are going to go the surgical route, and then where do we go? Any weird scars on your body, you get a biospy?

What they need to do is hire some hot playboy bunny looking woman to do the body searches.I would go to the airport just for that and not even be flying anywhere.

I think the whole thing is bunk.
I have to give up my privacy to be safe from terrorists? I have to go through a body scanner, you, your mom, your wife, maybe your kids might get the backhand in the groin just to be safe from terrorists?
So if I want to take my family on vacation to Orlando, I got to get treated like potential threat? If I have to go on a business trip I have to be treated like a criminal?
One guy tries to light his crotch on fire and now I need a rub down? One guy tries to light his shoes on fire and now I need to go barefoot?
I am far more likely to be the victim of crime than terrorism.
Oh well, I guess I have to give up my rights so the government can protect them.

This country has become a bunch of scared wimps. So, if this is all due to underwear bomber....what happens when some guy sticks a bomb up his ass? Anal cavity search for all!! The question is always how far do you let it go in the name of "safety"? How about if everyone has to fly naked?
I fly a lot and I'll take the scanner any day over the search, but I think it's going overboard because of a bunch of scared fools. Some good old fashioned profiling would work wonders.

As the crotch bomb is ripping a whole the size of Buick in the side of the fuselage I'm betting the privacy folks would at that moment rather have gotten felt-up than what they're about to feel as they slam into ground at 600mph on fire. Those pat-down folks just have to be screened very well themselves and probably trained and paid a little better than the average TSA worker. It would help also if they made sure they all look Oprah.

Exactly.. we need more mature people to start handing over their rights and freedoms in interest of safety...
Do you know why the terrorists haven't successfully attacked us in a long time? BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE TO... we are giving up our freedoms and imploding from the inside, out of fear faster than they could ever bring us down by blowing up a coffee shop or another stupid plane..

OMG people, get over yourselves!
Do you really believe that after the TSA conducts 150 layers of security, background, history, credit, bank, and employment checks to hire in as an airport security official that the only people left eligible for hire are rapists, pedophiles and sexual predators? Really??
I'm sure the TSA employees that have to run their hands in and out of your sweaty, clammy folds of skin, and warty junk enjoy that part of their job just as much as you enjoy having it done.
Our rights to privacy went away with the passage of the Patiot Act, which you overwhelmingly approved of.
Get scanned, get groped, get on the plane, and get over it!

They don't pat you down with the back of their hand anymore... It's the front of their hand and they slide it down your thigh.... Hence why all the backlash..

So you don't mind being subject to this because out of fear of terrorists? Isn;t this EXACTLY what terrorists want? For us to be afraid? If you are too afraid to fly because some terrorist may blow up your plane... then I will use the same argument that people are saying about those that are coming out against the TSA.. THEN DON'T FLY! All we are doing is letting the terrorist win by getting to us..
By adding more and more measures to combat this, we are only pushing them to go to further lengths.... Obviously what we had going was working because they resorted to parcel bombs.. and now we are taking care of that..
Next down the line we will probably see someone getting a bomb surgically put inside themselves... What do we do then?

Why is there backlash even with that?
I would bet my next 6 mortgage payments that nobody in the TSA likes their job. They don't want to touch your inner thigh or see your privates any more than they want an STD from a toilet seat. Nobody is getting any kicks off this at all.
For me, it's nice knowing that everyone on the plane I'm on has been screened for knives, guns, bombs, and other bad stuff. It's not just terrorists....regular old American nutjobs without an agenda too.
Sure removing ones shoes, taking off your belt, potentially getting touched, and having someone look through your private bags is annoying, time consuming, and maybe a breach of privacy.........but if you don't like it, don't fly. You have a choice. There are trains, buses, boats, and cars ready to be used if you don't like the policy.
I had to get patted down going into the Bears game this past weekend. Maybe it wasn't for guns or bombs but more for hidden bottles of beer....but I had to follow their rules to get in. If I refused, I stay outside. Simple.
I'm not sure about giving the ownership back to the airport or airlines. I like knowing there's ONE standard and they're all following the same hiring and procedural rules. Otherwise, one airport or airline would be very lax and others would be crazy harsh.
And plus, that's why I wear sandals, no belt, and check my bags when I fly. I breeze through the security checkpoints why all the other losers are huffing and puffing about their belts/shoes/bags. Plan ahead and it can be a lot easier.
And I've never bought into the "terrorists want us to be afraid or change the way we live" theory. The terrorists that blow up planes and use car bombs want to kill people. They don't care if we're scared or how our security checkpoints are longer than before......none of them are laughing like a mad evil genius while watching footage of a TSA story. They want to kill people, period. Lines, no lines, X-ray, no X-ray, fear or not....they want people to die to promote their agenda.

Why just on a plane though? Wouldn't you feel better if everybody at the mall with you has been screened? Everybody in the restaurant? Everybody at the stadium? Everybody driving through the Lincoln Tunnel? Everybody that goes into an elementary school? Everybody on metro/subway trains? There are 8 million ways to kill a couple hundred people that have NOTHING to do with airplanes.... why we remain fixated on airplanes is completely beyond me and why underwear bombers and shoe bombers still target airplanes is totally assinine.... here's a tip for any would-be terrorists either domestic or international extremists.. give up on the airplane thing.. you already have made that about as annoying of an experience as you can.. go after something else if you want to advance your agenda... stadiums, theatres, public transportation... anyplace were large numbers of people congregate... then you can royally screw those things up too.

As always, very good point DC.
But we have seen the results of the Ok City bombing. Vehicles weren't allowed to be parked without a driver near Federal buildings for a while....I know it was like that in Chicago.
And God forbid someone ever attack a shopping mall to see how the rules change there too.
But as it stands, these are the rules for flying and we all know them by heart by now. So to keep complaining about it seems like a waste of time to me. Though I understand, this is an internet message board where people come to talk about important and unimportant subjects, often times to just read their own thoughts or get a rise out of someone else.
While I'm a pro-security guy....I picked up a few new opposite ideas reading this thread. Good to keep talking.

But we don't know them by heart because they keep changing and becoming more and more intrusive.. early on it was metal detectors.. then the full body scan... then it was no shampoo bottles or nail clippers... then it was laptops out of the bag... then it was shoes off... now it's invasive pat downs... I heard one guy on the radio yesterday say that a TSA person stuck their hands INSIDE the waist band of his sweatpants they told him they had to do it and offered to do in on the concourse or take him somewhere private and there was no compelling reason to (ie. he wasn't suspected of anything nor did they have reason to believe he was hiding anything).
So there is a reason to complain about it.. to stop the madness from getting worse.. even if you can live with it the way it is... you might want to start complaining a little now before it gets worse...

That's exactly how I feel about it. People are so incredibly irrational.
Go live in a bubble if you want to be completely safe. I will take my chances with reasonable efforts to ensure security. Nothing is foolproof, you will never be entirely safe no matter how many crazy safeguards you put in place.

So has anyone seen these new scanners yet? I can't imagine that the TSA officer is standing right next to it. Even when I get a chest x-ray, which people are saying puts off less radiation than these things, the lab tech walks several feet away and stands behind a thick wall. Even going beyond my own safety, they better not be putting people into harms way to to "protect" us.
As people have pointed out, these are just people doing their jobs. There comes a point though were these patdowns are too aggressive. I was listening to the radio the other day and there was a cop on there that got "patted down". His impression was that there was no formal training when this new policy went into place. There are ways to fully search the body without touching those specific sensitive areas but still know if there is anything hiding there. Instead, they were just going at everything in an effort to give off the image of safety.
They certainly had time to research and implement it the proper way, they just simply chose not to.

That's a LOT of dogs (couple thousand airports, multiple concourses and lines per concourse at each airport... times several shifts per day - then handler salaries, training, food).... and then there's the problem of people being terrified or even just allergic to dogs.
It's generally fine for inspecting baggage, but it isn't practical for checking the human cargo.

That's not what he asked. Yes, there is someone standing right next to the scanner instructing you on what to do.

I just found a video on youtube that explains that....however they had an employee right there explaining to the person how to stand while it was taking the images. Hopefully that was just for the video.

There are also hand held devices that detect explosives.
Scanners and touching isn't the way to go until you have reasonable cause for such a search.
