Report: Young Jets fan roughed up
ESPNNewYork.com
An 8-year-old New York Jets fan was tackled by an adult Browns fan after Sunday's game, according to a television station in Cleveland.
The boy went to the game at Cleveland Browns Stadium in a Jets jersey with his father, who was born in New York. Much to the chagrin of the local crowd, the Jets rallied for a 26-20 overtime victory. The boy's mother, identified only as Danielle by ABC affiliate WEWS because she didn't want to reveal her last name, said the fans in the stadium were great, but things got out of control after the game.
"Calling him a bad word, to my husband and to my son, throwing food at them," she said, according to WEWS.
When the family reached the parking lot, the situation got uglier.
"As [my husband] was walking, holding my son's hand, a guy from behind tackled him. A drunken Browns fan tackled him and pulled him out of his dad's hand. He was on the ground crying," Danielle said, according to the station.
The boy was left with a scraped and bruised ankle. The mother said her husband didn't call police, opting instead to quickly get in the car and leave. When reached by the television station, Browns vice president of media relations Neal Gulkis called the situation unfortunate and disappointing and said the team is looking into the matter.
Gulkis said the scoreboard displays a number fans can text message to alert security to disorderly fans. The city of Cleveland, which operates the parking lot where the alleged incident took place, previously had added extra security.
The boy's mother had been nervous about her son attending the game, but believed "kids are off limits. Clevelanders are such great people. I knew that they would never hurt an 8-year-old kid, never."
The boy might be seeing his next Jets game in New Jersey.
"My husband asked him, 'Did you have a good time?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Would you want to go back sometime?' And he said, 'No, I don't like Browns Stadium.' Who could blame him?" the boy's mother said.

One stupid fan can give us all a bad rap. I certainly hope the kid is okay and I'm glad he wasn't hurt worse. The "fan" that did this should be found and barred from all games for life.

I had a Jets fan with me at the game. I told her walking out, "Stay close to us, we got some crazy fans". She thought I was kidding

No excuse at all for this type of behavior.
And it's this kind of thing that is going to be fuel in the fire once some of these stadiums start talking about having no alcohol (I just have a feeling it's coming in a few years). An isolated incident that will get blown up.

Whoever did it must be quite the tough guy, taking on an 8-year old and all. I hope the local media runs with the story and encourages someone to speak up and identify the jackass that did this.

Unreal... Unfortunately, every NFL stadium comes with its own compliment of jackasses (at least every one I've been to). Too bad the kid's experience was ruined by some idiot drunk. As an aside, I applaud the Dad's cool-headed decision to just get out of there quickly. I'm normally a pretty calm, laid-back guy. However, if that had been my son, I'm not sure I wouldn't have put the guy in the hospital (consequences or not). Way to go Dad.

A kid,...a child,....really ?
People are just ignorant. This is the single biggest reason I do not attend many games. There is just no guarantee of decency amongst the populace.

I don't attend many games anymore, either. This being one of the reasons..
I can see everything better on TV anyway. And it seems like CBS only has two types of fans anymore. The fans that are obnoxiously drunk, and cause problems, or the people who can't even get up and cheer.
Neither one of those types of people are fun to be around, IMO.

I just find this story doubtful.
You mean to tell me, that in Cleveland, after a football game where there are people everywhere, that people would just let this happen to a kid? I guess it's plausible that a drunken idiot could do what he did - but it's impossible for me to believe no stories would come out about a guy getting his teeth kicked in for doing this to a child.
Also, I'm assuming this is a grown "man" that did this - you mean to tell me a grown man tackles an 8 year old kid on a parking lot and the kid comes out with a scraped and bruised ankle? Doubtful.
If this did happen, then the dude who did this to the kid needs to be dealt with in a lot of ways - as do the people that stood by and let it happen. I just find it doubtful.

I thought the same things.
If I saw a grown man from the team I support tackle an 8-year old....I'd get in line to kick one of his teeth out.
I'd like to know how this guy attacked a kid and then walked away. The parents or other onlookers should have beat his as...errr, help him until cops arrived.

I know it would be hard not to try to step in and do something, but in today's age of litigation, I would have to exercise extreme precaution in getting involved in a situation that was none of my business.

Really? You see a grown man tackle a kid and you'd think about litigation? I'm not saying murder the guy - at the very least call 911 and describe what happened, and most of us would detain the guy in whatever means possible.
I guess I'm just trying to say that this "man" wouldn't simply continue on his way to his car/ride scott free. There had to be 60-70,000 people at the stadium until the end on Sunday - it's impossible for me to believe that no one would have done anything.

I might not necessarily beat the guy up, but I would definitely be involved in making sure he realized the error of his ways.
If this guy was so drunk, though, is it possible he just kind of fell into the kid?

Exactly, there almost always is more to the story. Dad lets his 8 yr old get tackled then turns tails and run? Come on, hard to believe. I bet a drunk guy slipped/fall or something on the kid, something less sinister.

I was walking out of the game with a Jets fan and his son who was about 8. Man I hope it wasn't him We had a good conversation and he was very complimentary as to the direction our team seems to be taking. He then said he parked in the Muni lot; I said be careful going out through there - I've see a lot of bad things occur in that lot which is why I stopped tailgating there. I've seen a kid get picked on after the Cincy game a few years ago - someone kept flipping the kids Bengals hat off of his head. His dad finally got ticked after repeatedly telling them to stop and slugged the guy after which an all out brawl ensued. The cops broke it up pretty quickly, but it was ugly. Even Brown's fans were telling the guy to stop and that he was being a jerk. All teams have jerk fans, but we seem to have a greater concentration of them it would seem. Hell, I wasn't treated too badly in Pittsburgh - now if we would have won I'm sure it would have been different but I would hope it wouldn't get physical. In fact I've never had any trouble at an away game; most fans are pretty good - it just takes a few jerks to spoil it for everyone. I'm all for good natured ribbing and smack talk - I expect it. But don't ever, ever let it turn physical.

Most of the time I wouldn't either... unless some drunk dude attacks a child or a woman.... those are about the only times I'd get in the middle of drunk people fighting... I have on occasion yelled at some cops to go break up fights at Texans games, but (thankfully) I havn't seen anyone attack a child.

That is exactly what I thought when I first read this. Someone probably was drunk, fell over the kid, and yells explicatives at the kid as he is getting up.
If someone form tackles an 8 year old then talks trash after the hit, someone is gonna call the cops/security.

j/c I don't know what to say about this. But I'll try. If it is true, exactly as written - the scum should be held accountable. Had I been present, the least I would've done is get between the guy and the family. Make sure everyone was ok (the kid), then looked for a cop, or at least followed the guy to see what car he got into - get a plate number, etc. That's "IF it is true exactly as written". If it was a drunk that fell and hit the kid, slightly different story. Make sure the kid is okay, try to keep things calm, etc. And I'm sure everyone else on here would've done the same things I would've. Without any more details, that's the best any of us can say. It does, regardless of what comes out later, cast a bad image of Browns fans.

You don't have kids, do you? As a dad, I can think of a LOT of reasons to do exactly as he did.
- no cops in the area to go to - the guy and his son are Jets fans surrounded by a bunch of the attacker's drunk buddies (no external support in sight) - his kid was already hurt and crying (not exactly the best time to pick a fight) - his kid is only 8-years old and probably frightened (even if he wasn't hurt).
The "ugly" drunk is a fixture at Browns games (as it is at most NFL sites, unfortunately). I have no trouble at all buying this story because, through the years, I've seen drunken fools wreck plenty of game day experiences with boorish behavior.

Exactly the reason I got rid of my season tickets.
I can't handle the games anymore. Had a really bad situation stir up at the Bengals Browns shoot out 2 seasons ago when I went with my buddy who is a Bengals fan...had crap thrown on us and I was in a Browns jersey...The topper was the barley 20 yr old who threw Nacho's and Cheese at my buddy and hit me, and the FAMILY of browns fans in front of us....Atleast that jackass was escored out...But then AGAIN ...after we received a thrashing from the Ravens I had a bad run in with a Browns fan in the Muni Lot after the game while walking to my car... Keep in mind I am a die hard browns fans and both altercations were with Browns fans. To many people forget this is just a game and it doesn't affect us in any way whatsoever that actually matters in our life. I won't be attending or taking my children to CBS for a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnng time. And to be honest, I've been to Heinz field decked out in C Town Gear and it isn't half as bad. I know i've only been to one Browns game there but compared to all the Browns Steelers game in Cle i've been to...Something needs to be done in cle.

I was talking about the Browns/Steelers rivalry on the way out of a high school game Satuday night.
My high school played their "rival". But, fans of the school I went to don't even care about them anymore. For them, it's the biggest game of the year, and they can make their season by beating us. It never happens, so it's just another game for us.
It's like Pittsburgh/Cleveland. Of course our fans are worse. They are mad we can't beat them. We're just another game to Pittsburgh and their fans now, whether our fans want to admit it or not. And it won't change til' we start winning some games.

If it wasn't that bad in Pittsburgh I'm guessing the Steelers won. When I went to M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore last year nobody said peep to us, because the Ravens slaughtered the Browns. Compare to my friends who went to Ralph Wilson Stadium for the MNF game two years ago that we won...they had beer bottles thrown at them as they left.
Every team has its fair share of jackass fans. It's not unique to Cleveland or anywhere else.

My season tickets for Bears games are way up in the corner, so I get to see the "real" fans. They don't let a fan wearing the opposing teams jersey by without some playful booing or vulgar threats (depends if its a she and if she's hot).
I've seen lots of fans get pelted with all sorts of things until the point the person calls security or starts a fight. Winning or losing....no matter, wearing the other teams colors will attract attention to you.
I was wearing a Black Raiders Jerry Rice jersey to the Bears/Vikings game this past weekend (I was wearing it during the previous two Browns wins, so I had to keep the streak going). A few people asked why I was wearing it...but nothing too crazy, though I did also have a Bears hat on too.

8-year-old Jets fan tackled by Cleveland Browns fan in spotlight after mother's letter to Plain Dealer; family declines Jets' offer browns logoThe PD CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Tuesday's edition of The Plain Dealer included a letter to the editor from Danielle Brennan of Painesville Township. WEWS Channel 5 has telecast an interview with Brennan, and ESPN.com has reported the story, which developed after the Cleveland Browns lost to the New York Jets, 26-20 in overtime, on Sunday. Brennan's letter to the editor, published in Tuesday's The Plain Dealer: Our family has made Cleveland our home for almost 12 years, and we tell everyone we know it is a wonderful city full of great people. Today, I'm ashamed to live here. As a birthday gift, my husband and 8-year-old son attended the Browns-Jets game. The Jets are their favorite team. What started out as an exciting day ended with an injured little boy. We knew there would be hecklers, but never would I have thought that my son would be called an expletive to his face or have hot dogs thrown at him. But the worst was when he was tackled by a drunken adult male in the parking lot. Yes, tackled! Can you imagine the fear that went through his mind as this buffoon landed on him with full force? It makes me sick to see the very large scrape and bruising he received. Shame on you, Browns fans! No matter how intense the game or who the opponent is, kids are off limits. End of story. I wonder if those repulsive fans were able to sleep Sunday night, knowing they assaulted a child. I know I didn't. -DANIELLE BRENNAN Painesville Township WEWS now reports that the Jets have offered to fly the Brennan family to New York to watch a Jets game from a suite. WEWS adds: The family said they appreciate the offer, but they've graciously declined and they are done with the story. They said they just want the Muni Lot to be safer. web page

And, next to Arizona, I would put Chicago on my list of "friendly to opposing fans" list.
Wife and I were there - back when Couch was the qb........don't remember the details anymore - I think we had a 2 td lead late in the 4th. Over time. Int by the bears, game over.
I had fun with the bears fans around me. When we lost (and honestly, maybe it wasn't o.t. I don't remember) I got heckled like hell. Heckled. Never "threatened". Nothing thrown on me.
Then we left the stadium for what seemed like about a mile walk. Heckled the whole time. In a fun way. At no time was I concerned or worried about anything physical happening.
And I'll damn well make sure no opposing fan needs to deal with a physical threat from a Browns fan at any game I attend. Especially a kid.
If an opposing fan is being stupid, I'll tell them that - as I did the jets fan behind me that was cheering when a Browns player was hurt. If ANY fan spills beer on me, I'll tell them they are stupid.
But, during, before, or after a game? I'll stick up for a fan of the opposing team. For his or her right to cheer their team, and talk a bit of smack. If it goes overboard, I'll tell them to shut up with the crap. Cheer your team.
I've been to Arizona, Detroit, Cincy,Chicago, and Indy. Only problem I had was cincy. Little woman wanted to get my ass kicked. I think I've been somewhere else for a game, but I don't remember where.
