Grr! My company will NOT let us upgrade our IE on our laptops (one of the programs we use is not compatible yet with IE8). So, here I am, stuck at IE6 and it's a freakin' drag! My computer's locking up/freezing/slow as HELL! If I were to download another browser, will it interfere with my ability still run IE when I need to?
A new browser is something that I would have to be able to install and uninstall at will - since if I need service on my laptop, I can't have it on here. Is there one browser better than the other? I know I can't download IE8 because I won't be able to get back to the company standard of IE8. Firefox? Netscape? Mozilla? Anything I'm missing that's better?

I use Safari from Apple, it runs smooth all the time. There's also Google Chrome, but I don't use it. I'm sure somebody that uses it will be along here soon.

I use Firefox, I prefer it to IE8 or any IE. I like the add-ons that come with it. And I feel like it's faster too

I like Firefox. The others are slower or awkward.

No, it will not.

Install/Uninstall - Opera, Firefox and Chrome can all do this just fine.
Better? - That generally subjective. I prefer Opera, most prefer FireFox... Chrome has a lot of recent converts.
Every single one of them will have their own caveats and benefits. Personally, though, I roll with Opera for its speed and its security.

I'm a Chromer. It's fast, it's smooth, it's secure and it's smart.

Chrome is studly fast, alot of browsers are coming along but chrome was the first one to actually let webpages run at native speed versus interpreted. Plus if flash or any plugins crash a webpage, it wont take down all of your pages/tabs that are open which is nice. Its entire mantra is simplicity and speed. Want to search for something on google? just start typing in the address bar and hit enter instead of going to google first.
Its primary disadvantage is plugins but if your coming from IE you wont be missing any you may have used coming from another Browser.

On my Mac at home and my laptop at work I generally run FF. Not that it's the fastest because it certainly isn't. It blocks ads better than any other I've tried. I would prefer Safari on my Mac but is sucks at ad blocking and chrome is what I use when I log into the flashchat on gameday from my laptop because FF really sucks when it comes to it's speed using flash. I'd use chrome more but I doubt that google is ever going to produce an ad block for google ads!

I use Google Chrome.
I can't answer any of the technical stuff. It just works well for me.

i use google chrome - but it doesn't work for some java or adobe flash video stuff (or for netflix instant) - so i still use IE for that. Firefox works great too and if you want, PM me and i can send you a thing to add to your registry to make it faster. of course, that is, if you feel safe editing the registry of the browser. i won't force it on ya lol.

Thanks all...I'm going to try each one and see which I like best. I'm running on Opera right now and I'm already much happier. Facebook was locking up for me on IE, it's not locking up with Opera. YAY!
I wish they'd update the other programs to run on IE8. Not that I'm married to IE or anything, but should my company figure out that I've downloaded something else, I could get in trouble. (which is why I need something that I can install/uninstall at will)

Used FireFox for years, but recently (6 months or so ago) switched to Google Chrome.
Like others said, theres some things that don't work well in it, but I had the same thing with FF. And when programming things for web pages I often have to make special mods to deal with IE specific issues or display problems.
Many programmers program specifically for IE, which means things don't always work the same in other browsers, even though IE is the one that is not made to be compliant to the standards, but it is the most recognized and most used(due to be pre-installed and default in Windows PCs)
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

I hear ya BB, my company is the same way. We're stuck on IE6 because none of their web based apps work on IE7 or 8. Are you allowed to connect a usb flash drive? If so, there is a opera-usb version out there that can run from a flash drive. This way, it doesn't actually install on your work computer.

Absolutely and it's now my primary browser. Like others I had used FF for years. Chrome is faster and it runs multiple tabs without problems. The next generation of FF is supposed to be good ... we'll see.
You might want to try PortableApps (USB executed software) if you want to attempt to run another browser without installing it on your work computer. Your IT dept may not be pleased, but it does allow you to circumvent some admin rights. PortableApps is completely free and only open source. Chrome and FF are available (since PA uses open source it's my guess that it's actually Chromium). It's my understanding that PA does not write to Windows' registry.
Frankly I use PA at work for Gimp and a few other programs. They offer me better functionality than the defaut apps available.

Chrome is my primary browser as well, though there are occasions that it has some issues. I keep IE, FireFox, Opera, and Chrome on my system bit use Chrome the most.
