you give them respect and trust you have taught them well enough so they make the right decisions.
It would be nice if we lived in the perfect world, where the perfect parents would teach their children respect and trust and the perfect children would listen to and obey their parents 100% of the time, wouldn't it?

checking facebook at school is the sign of bad parenting
Bad parenting to me (and this is ONLY MHO) would be allowing a child at such a young age to have a facebook to begin with. Is it because the parents are caving into their child's demands? "But Jimmy has a facbook, why can't I? You're so mean!"

what bad habit would you be speaking of?
Facebook is. It can become a bad habit for adult, let alone a child. It can easily become a huge time waster. is there something valuable being taught on facebook that I'm not aware of? You mentioned something about kids learning how to type. Do 4th graders need to type any of their assignments in school? If they did, wouldn't they be teaching typing at that age?

talking with their friends over the internet is wrong?
I never said it was "wrong", but let me ask you this -- what is so terribly wrong with little Jimmy picking up one of those old fashioned telephones to ask if Bobby can come over and play? Or is Jimmy too busy playing Farmville to even bother with Bobby?
Seriously, and people wonder why today's youth has an obesity problem in the United States. Too much TV/video games/internet. That's why.

if my kid said something to that effect, he wouldn't get facebook at all. he asked me for facebook because it was the easiest way for me to post videos/pictures and he could hop on, check them out, and then call me to talk about them. he does know how to work that dang thing called a phone

typing is an invaluable skill to have. i see it every day where i work. i have been typing on a computer since age 5 ( the old commodore days) and i am head and shoulders above a lot of my co workers. its a learnable skill and i feel its important in this day in age. will he use it in 4th grade? no. in 20 years? yeah. and he is getting a good foundation now. ive taught him google docs, facebook, dictionary.com, espn, etc. the more you LEARN the more you know. i want him to learn everything that can be of use to him in the future. thats my job as a role model.

Like I said - my daughter doesn't have a facebook account - she can only get on mine - when I let her.
As for good grades? Had parent teacher conferences last night. Daughter started it out, showing some od the stuff she had done. Then the teacher told her "okay, you can go out and get your powerpoint ready.".
He waited until she left. Then looked at us and simply said "I have nothing to say. She does excellent in reading and math. She has never caused a problem in class. She does very well in science. She always has her homework done. " I won't say what else he said, as some will take it as boasting on my part.

My son is just about 15 months old and I'm pretty sure most of his Facebook statuses would have less spelling and grammatical errors than the ones I see from adults.

Really, who would want their kid to have that kind of distraction??
I guess maybe some parents give each kid their own computer.. we have one in the house and I have a laptop for work..... the computer and facebook are not a distraction to my 14 year old and they won't be to my 7 year old because I control when and for how long they get to play on the computer.

Meanie.
What are you trying to do ... stunt their social development or something? lol
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
