Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy leaves Jacksonville in walking boot
Published: Sunday, November 21, 2010, 5:22 PM Updated: Sunday, November 21, 2010, 9:16 PM Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Colt McCoy joined Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace before him in the Browns' boot brigade.
Now, with a left ankle injury that may or may not be the dreaded high ankle sprain suffered by Delhomme and Wallace, the rookie quarterback's status is in doubt.
After another valiant effort that came up short, McCoy limped off the field following Sunday's 24-20 loss to the Jaguars and into the X-ray room. When he came out, he was fitted with the clunky, gray walking boot that has become the fashion statement of the Browns' locker room this season.
McCoy, who was injured early in the third quarter on one of his six sacks, said he didn't think anything could be seen on the X-rays and he'll most likely undergo an MRI Monday.
Whether or not he should've been taken out is a matter of debate.
"I wasn't going to come out of the game," said McCoy, who was sacked three more times after the injury. "I felt like I could still do the things I needed to do. In the fourth quarter, I don't think it affected my throws. It was sore. It was bothering me, but I needed to be out there."
At one point following the injury, Browns coach Eric Mangini had Seneca Wallace warming up on the sidelines. But they decided against him.
"I have no idea why," said Wallace. "I just play when they ask me to."
After watching McCoy put the Browns on top, 20-17, with a field goal drive -- one on which he aggravated the ankle on an 18-yard run -- and then almost pull it out on his final possession, Mangini was convinced he did the right thing.
"[We] talked about that throughout the second half," said Mangini. "[We kept] looking at the decisions, looking at the throws, seeing if those were dramatically affected. He came down and had a really good drive there at the end of the game. ... I'm glad I stayed with him."
Once again, McCoy showed some Brian Sipe-like moxie on his final two drives to almost save the Browns from the embarrassment of blowing six takeaways.
After the Jaguars tied it, 17-17, with 3:34 remaining, McCoy hit underused tight end Evan Moore with a 38-yarder down the right side. Three plays later, McCoy scrambled 18 yards and out of bounds at the Jaguars 18, but limped severely afterwards. Following a 7-yard sack, Phil Dawson kicked the 41-yarder to make it 20-17 with 2:46 remaining.
In retrospect, McCoy said he shouldn't have run out of bounds and stopped the clock.
"Looking back, you should probably slide," he said. "That was the last thing in my mind. I didn't know how slow I really was. I didn't know if somebody was behind me. That's a play I'd like to have back, I guess. But I knew we were in field-goal range and we're going to run the clock off and let's get a field goal. That's what we did. We just gave them too much time."
After the Jaguars went up, 24-20, on Maurice Jones-Drew's 1-yard TD run, McCoy took over at his own 20 with 1:16 remaining and no timeouts. Showing the same resolve that took the Jets to overtime a week before, McCoy hit Mohamed Massaquoi down the deep middle for 17 yards and then to the left for 12. Two plays later, he found Moore again for 22 yards to the Jaguars' 29. With 13 seconds remaining, he almost hit Ben Watson at the 5. But the ball glanced off the arm of safety Sean Considine, then off the chest of Watson and back to Considine.
"They're dropping everybody back, and you can't throw short routes because we have no timeouts," McCoy said. "You've just got to take a shot like that. It's risky, but that's how it has to be."
Mangini said the game would've been over if Watson had caught it, with about eight seconds left. But McCoy isn't so sure.
"Obviously, it would've been very close," he said. "Had we caught the ball, we would've snapped it and clocked it with hopefully two or three seconds left."
Still, McCoy knows the Browns should've never been in that situation in the first place.
"We didn't execute," he said. "We had short fields. Our defense played outstanding. Hats off to them. You've got to score more than 10 points off of six turnovers. But we fought up to the very end. We didn't hang our heads and it came down to the very last play."

Emphatically agree with D in D. If he is hurt, use Wallace or Delhomme. Seems like the best we have and we now know better, maybe not absolutely, but better, what we have at QB in McBoy. Unless he is certain to go, use him in a few weeks. I don't want him behind St. Clair. The offensive line yesterday is lethal to our QBs. How did St. Clair ever see the field again?

If you've seen how all of them are getting tackled, it would be no wonder.
Each time, it's a guy getting him around the ankles and the ankle rolling.
IMO, it is a coincidence (or should be expected in this line of work).

If I remember correctly he started to limp when running out of bounds as if he planted his foot awkwardly.

I think he was hurt before that run out of bounds. I'm thinking that, during that run, he just aggravated it further.

Actually oorah that play aggravated it. A defender from behind twisted it on that play but Colt broke free, and Gannon mentioned earlier in the game that Colt was limping, and you could see it in the first half.

He got hurt taking a sack in the 3rd quarter.

Yes that is correct, I just watched Colt's post-game presser. It was a 3rd-quarter sack that he got hurt on.

Tony Grossi on the podcast said today that it was a bad high ankle sprain and he expects Wallace to start next week.

Not getting this. If it was so bad he shouldn't have been able to finish the game. I don't want to see more Seneca or Jake.

As I said when Delhomme got hurt, your ankle doesn't really hurt that much right when you sprain it. I mean, it kills the instant you do it, but then the adrenaline kicks in and you're ok. But, the next morning, you feel like your foot is about to fall off.
So, I'm not surprised that McCoy kept going. And, to be honest, I think he did ok.
I have no problem if Wallace has to play. I think he did well for us and I think he can lead us to Ws. Delhomme on the other hand...

I don't really mind Seneca playing or even Jake really, but I'd rather see Colt get more playing time and hopefullly further his development - - as long as he doesn't suffer any loss of mobility of course. If he needs a week off so be it, but I like our shiny new toy.

I agree. Without the injury, Colt would have played on.
Then again, without the injury, I think Wallace was doing well enough to keep his starting job, too.

Why the hell would Grossi offer an opinion that it was a highly ankle sprain? A journalism degree AND a medical degree. Impressive.

Good point, Grossi routinely writes science fiction, I had no idea he was so talented.

No one will know for sure untilt eh X-Rays and other tests are done.
If the ankle is badly swollen, that may not happen today, or even tomorrow.
While I would rather have McCoy start the rest of the season, him being able to sit back after a successful starting run and have the opportunity to watch and learn a little more is not the end of the world. The unfortunate part is that he might not get to go against the cupcake part of the schedule, after living through the toughest part.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5839360He has a sprained ankle and is day to day. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Colt McCoy has sprained left ankle By James Walker ESPN.com Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Colt McCoy suffered a left ankle sprain on Sunday and his status is "up in the air" for next week's game against the Carolina Panthers, a source told ESPN.com. McCoy suffered the injury during the third quarter of Cleveland's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The rookie continued to play and was in a walking boot after the game. McCoy started five consecutive games for the Browns (3-7) and went 2-3 in those contests, which included wins over the New Orleans Saints (7-3) and New England Patriots (8-2). As of Monday McCoy isn't being ruled out, and his playing status likely will be determined "on how he feels" toward the end of the week, the source added. But ankle sprains in the past have kept out two Cleveland quarterbacks already this season: Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme. One of those two veterans would start for the Browns if McCoy cannot play against Carolina. McCoy, a third-round pick, has thrown for 975 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in five starts this season. James Walker covers the AFC North for ESPN.com.

I agree on the resting part.
Before Colt played, his time on the sideline provided limited learning.
Now that he has actually played and played well, his time on the sidelines will be totally different. He'll know what's going on and will be more active with coaches and teammates.
It's one thing for a untested rookie to be talking to players on the sideline. It's another for a veteran to be talking. Same goes with any interaction with the coaching staff.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

I don't think AJ Green will be an option for us. He won't be there. He's a top 3 pick, and we aren't drafting top 3.. We could.. lol.. but I doubt we do.
