He's an arrogant, whiny little child. That's forgiven because he backs it up on the field, then plays with a torn acl, then throws a few more TDs just for a nightcap. He's an absolute baller who absolutely deserves to be in the discussion for top QB in the league.

Is he on the level of Manning? In other words, just assuming he's going to give his team the upper hand in any non-playoff game and penciling him in for 300 yards and 2-4 TDs in any given matchup, with any supporting cast, until proven otherwise. I understand the playoff problems. However Rivers always plays well enough for them to win, especially at the end of games. Everyone else is the let down. The most Ints he has ever thrown in one game is two. He's lost VJ, Gates, Naanee, Mathews, Floyd, and now Crayton for multiple games.

Is there truly a defense in the league that he WON'T torch?

If He continues his pace, and they climb back up to 10-6 and win the West, he'll be Co-MVP with Vick...

But...

I don't even think winning a SB puts him in the Manning/Brady/Brees category...

I don't know if it's his 'tude, because, logically, someones attitude shouldn't alter how they are perceived as an athlete...

...Right?

If you say "Phillip Rivers is a Top 5 QB in the league." you're not ganna get too much rebuttle...

But theres a difference between being a Top 5, and being a Top QB...

I mean Kyle Orton's probably ganna throw for 5k...

I'l have to say He is the best QB in the league "right now". The man has lost every single starting weapon he had this year and he is still on an absolute terror. the long haul will prove Patton Manning as the best, but missing a lot of his weapons right now he is struggling. Rivers is killing it.

I think most of us can agree that he's at least a top 5 QB in the league..

IMO, I think he is a top 3 QB.. He has one of the quickest releases I've ever seen, not to mention he is very very accurate. Add the fact that he has a stron arm and is tough as nails.. Makes u say "Wow"

I rank him at #2 in douchebag QBs behind Big Ben.

Don't worry Rivers, you'll always be #2 in my book.

Which Manning? Would you rather have Eli or Rivers?

Here is how I would rank him. Fifth.

1. Manning
1a. Brady
3. Rodgers
4. Brees
5. Rivers

EDIT: That's Peyton Manning, if you seriously had any doubts.
I might jockey around a bit in there, but I think I'd keep Rivers fifth. It's not so much a stat thing as a watching him play thing.

Rivers is for sure top 5. I would say its hard for him to move into top 3 though because he doesn't have a ring. Not that all QBs with rings are good(Trent Dilfer) but good QBs who get rings. That beings said this is probably my top 5

1. Tom Brady-3 SB wins, 4 trips,2 SB MVP, 5 Pro bowls, 244 TD Passes in 11 seasons as starter(missed 1 due to injury, back up for on season)
2. Peyton Manning-1 SB win,2 trips, 1 SB MVP, 10 Pro bowls, 386 TD passes in 13 seasons
3. Drew Brees-1 SB win, 1 trip,4 pro bowls, 224 TD passes in 8 seasons(back up for 1 season)
4. Big Rapey- 2 SB wins, 2 trips, 1 Pro Bowl, 139 TD passes in 7 seasons
5. Phillip Rivers- 2 Pro Bowls, 129 TD passes in 7 seasons(back up for 2 seasons)

Rivers needs rings to compete with Manning/Brady but he is playing great this season either way

I agree with the list.....maybe switching Brees and Rivers though.

Why no Vick? I'm no Vick basher for his off-field issues, he paid his debt. I just don't know if I trust his play. I think he opens himself up to too many hits and has a TON of weapons right now. Manning and Rivers are clicking with a thin roster.

I'm no Rivers pimp but...

Being in SD, I can say he's gotten A LOT better about the attitude thing. I mean, other than saying he's better than he was before, I can't really argue with you.

He's still got the cocky attitude and trash talk and everything, but I actually give him a pass since he's 1) A total badass with the ball in his hands and doesn't care who you sign off the street, he's going to deliver them the ball on target almost every time and 2) He's a warrior. The guy has seen more than his fair share of hits, but he battles every game. His line has been awful (AWFUL) this year up until very recently, and he still tears through defenses.

Candy,
Before this year I would totally agree with you, but seeing what Rivers is doing this season has earned him a ton of respect in my eyes. In my opinion, what he has done is more impressive than Vick. Rivers has literally had nobody around him (line has had injury and contract holdout issues), his WR situation has been well documented, his 1st round RB (you might have remembered him as being the next LT ), his special teams unit crapping the bed literally every game.

I hate the whole cocky attitude thing as much as the next guy, but I can't deny that the guy has manned up, arguably, more than anyone else in the NFL this year.

Just sayin...

I remember a certain "QB guru" on this forum who once said Rivers wasn't any good.

He also said Quinn was gonna be one of the best ever.

That said, I LOVE Rivers. Love the intensity and fire.

I agree with both posts above.

The only addition I would have is that I would add Matt Ryan and BigBen to the list (all fighting Brees and Rivers for the 4 & 5 spots). Ben's obviously not been it so far this season, but his history shows he should be there. Matt Ryan has been extremely good this year and doesn't put up the huge numbers because he plays within the Falcon's system to win games instead.

He's Marino reincarnated...

I think Rogers is better and will win multiple SB... He's also a gamer... guy had to replace a legend and didn't even flinch. Also, his team is better and he is more mobile. Too bad we could of had him instead of he who should not be named. Gotta admit I was on the Alex Smith train that year though so I missed it too.

What makes A-rod better than Rivers? Rivers is better in every statistical category I can think of. It's not his fault his team chokes in playoff games.

the same thing that might make Matt Ryan better than Rivers. it's not all about the numbers.

yes, it might be his fault that his team chokes in playoff games. he's not the consummate leader that is usually needed to guide a team in bad times. thigns get bad with a bad leader, they get worse quickly.

here's an interesting take. if you were starting a team from scratch and could pick any QB (and would only get what they have left in their career from today), who would you pick?

mine?

1. Peyton Manning (worth it to install the work ethic and discipline in the team to have the shorter career)
2. Matt Ryan (exactly what I want in a QB)
3. Aaron Rodgers
4. Drew Brees
5. Tom Brady

His teamates have said they love his fire and passion.

If I were to start a franchise right now my list would be this:

1. Rivers
2. A-Rod
3. Matt Ryan
4. Big Ben
5. Bradford

doh! I left out Bradford (probably a mental block because I was completely wrong about him leading up to the draft).

Shoehorn him in on my list after Rodgers.

I was cornfused there a minute,...

A-Rod is "catchy," but too close to that Rodriquez moniker.

How about A-Rodge, for us dummies ?

Seriously. It took me 5 minutes of staring at my screen with a dumb look on my face pondering "Why in the world are they talking about Alex Rodriguez?" before I finally figured out they meant Rodgers.

not better than manning, brady, or brees, that right now is the gold standard for the nfl

but i have him above pretty much everybody else. he's carrying that team. it's remarkable.

he's probably equal with big ben. although i can see arguments for both sides.

but definitely better than the 2nd and 3rd tier guys like ryan, sanchez, flacco, rogers, etc..

am I the only one that likes Brees over Brady? Set aside the number of super bowl rings, and looking at overall skill set.... I think Brees is a better QB.

If Rivers carries his team and wins the superbowl he has to be considered in the same class as those 3.

Rivers has had a ~105.0 qb rating the last 3 years. Dude is averaging 9 yards an attempt this year throwing to a hobbled Antonio Gates and basically nobody else (injuries, holdout). That is insane.

Put him down as a 'top 1' QB for me.

I would put Ryan, Rogers (and maybe Flacco) into some sort of "1 and a half tier" and then have the rest in the second and third tiers.

I say that because I don't think Sanchez is all that good. I didn't consider him a top QB prospect, and I don't think he's shown any more than that. He gets way too much love in the media because he's a NY quarterback and is pitching the ball to an all Pro-Bowl WR group, handing off to Pro-Bowl Running backs, and standing behind the best offensive line in football.

If I had my first round pick, I couldn't pass up a Ryan or a Rogers or a Rivers, but I would pass on a Sanchez or a Flacco (Flacco could go either way, though).
