BEREA, Ohio (AP)—The Cleveland Browns have signed punter Reggie Hodges(notes) to a two-year contract extension, locking up the potential restricted free agent.

Hodges said Friday that the sides recently finalized the deal. Hodges played in eight games last season for Cleveland after Dave Zastudil(notes) was injured and averaged 39.8 yards on 45 punts. He assumed the starter’s job in training camp this year when Zastudil couldn’t kick after undergoing offseason knee surgery. The Browns recently waived Zastudil.

Hodges is averaging 44 yards on 51 punts and leads the NFL with 11 punts inside the opponent’s 10-yard line.

Hodges also made one of the Browns’ biggest plays, running 68 yards on a fake in an upset of New Orleans.

Is this a sign that Holmgren thinks will get a new CBA in place before March?? If we see teams start signing players again I think that is a huge positive for football in 2011...............

I like this move. I wasn't crazy about him last year, but he's been a solid, reliable punter this season for us. #8 in the league in net yardage on his punts, which speaks to his ability as well as the talents of our punt coverage unit as a whole. A good punter is something you never want to be without. Plus he seems like an excellent character guy as well. I know he's well liked by his teammates.

Great news. In addition to being a very good punter, he's probably top-5 all time in yards per carry!

Leading the league with punts inside the 20 will get you noticed and a new contract.

More to follow I hope.....stay tuned!

Hopefully, we won't have to see him that much next year.

Off topic: Is there a way to respond to posts without replying to a particular poster?

I like him because he made me say, "Zastu-who?" by his 2nd game (...and I liked me some Zasty).

4 punts INSIDE THE 10 vs. Pitts? Sign the man/pay the man.

I like locking him up. I wasn't too crazy about him last year at all. He had some horrid kicks, but you see he deff turned things around and has become very good.

In the chess game of football field position is important. He hasn't shanked many,

I've just been informed that vBulletin has a superior post jumper.

But I like this site. It's like the same one I joined when DawgTalk was the official message board of the Browns. It's like home to me.

This appears to be a bit of a prophetic signing given his contribution today, particularly in the 4th quarter. A great punt that should have sealed the game and a nice placement of a high snap for the game winning FG.

Thanks Reg.
