What a great list. If it were me, here'd be my top 5 in no particular order: Marshall Faulk Ray Guy Cortez Kennedy Deion Sanders Shannon Sharpe
but there are > 5 other guys that should also be in the HOF. Will be interesting. Link Jerome Bettis, Marshall Faulk, Curtis Martin, Willie Roaf, and Deion Sanders are among the semifinalists being considered for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2011. There are 26 semifinalists this year. The Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee chose the 26 semifinalists from the previously announced list of 114 preliminary nominees. In addition to the five first-year eligible nominees, two other previously eligible candidates, Edward DeBartolo, Jr. and Ed Sabol have made it to the semifinalist’s list for the first time. Each of the remaining 19 nominees on the Selection Committee’s list has been a semifinalist at least once prior to this year. The complete list of 26 modern-era semifinalists: Jerome Bettis, RB – 1993-95 Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams, 1996-2005 Pittsburgh Steelers Tim Brown(notes), WR/KR – 1988-2003 Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders, 2004 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Cris Carter, WR – 1987-89 Philadelphia Eagles, 1990-2001 Minnesota Vikings, 2002 Miami Dolphins Don Coryell, Coach – 1973-77 St. Louis Cardinals, 1978-1986 San Diego Chargers Roger Craig, RB – 1983-1990 San Francisco 49ers, 1991 Los Angeles Raiders, 1992-93 Minnesota Vikings Terrell Davis, RB – 1995-2001 Denver Broncos Dermontti Dawson, C – 1988-2000 Pittsburgh Steelers Edward DeBartolo, Jr., Owner – 1979-1997 San Francisco 49ers Richard Dent, DE – 1983-1993, 1995 Chicago Bears, 1994 San Francisco 49ers, 1996 Indianapolis Colts, 1997 Philadelphia Eagles Chris Doleman, DE/LB – 1985-1993, 1999 Minnesota Vikings, 1994-95 Atlanta Falcons, 1996-98 San Francisco 49ers Marshall Faulk, RB – 1994-98 Indianapolis Colts, 1999-2005 St. Louis Rams Kevin Greene, LB/DE – 1985-1992 Los Angeles Rams, 1993-95 Pittsburgh Steelers, 1996, 1998-99 Carolina Panthers, 1997 San Francisco 49ers Ray Guy, P – 1973-1986 Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders Charles Haley, DE/LB – 1986-1991, 1999 San Francisco 49ers, 1992-96 Dallas Cowboys Lester Hayes, CB – 1977-1986 Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders Cortez Kennedy, DT – 1990-2000 Seattle Seahawks Curtis Martin, RB – 1995-97 New England Patriots, 1998-2005 New York Jets Art Modell, Owner – 1961-1995 Cleveland Browns, 1996-2003 Baltimore Ravens Andre Reed, WR – 1985-1999 Buffalo Bills, 2000 Washington Redskins Willie Roaf, T – 1993-2001 New Orleans Saints, 2002-05 Kansas City Chiefs Ed Sabol, Contributor – 1964-1995 NFL Films Deion Sanders, CB/KR/PR – 1989-1993 Atlanta Falcons, 1994 San Francisco 49ers, 1995-99 Dallas Cowboys, 2000 Washington Redskins, 2004-05 Baltimore Ravens Shannon Sharpe, TE – 1990-99, 2002-03 Denver Broncos, 2000-01 Baltimore Ravens Paul Tagliabue, Commissioner – 1989-2006 National Football League Aeneas Williams, CB/S – 1991-2000 Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals, 2001-04 St. Louis Rams George Young, Contributor – 1968-1974 Baltimore Colts, 1975-78 Miami Dolphins, 1979-1997 New York Giants, 1998-2001 National Football League The list of 26 semifinalists will be reduced by mail ballot to 15 modern-era finalists. That list increases to 17 finalist nominees with the inclusion of the two recommended candidates of the Hall of Fame’s Seniors Committee. The Seniors Committee nominees, who were announced in August, are linebacker Chris Hanburger, Washington Redskins (1965-1978) and linebacker Les Richter, Los Angeles Rams (1954-1962). The results of the modern-era reduction vote to 15 finalists will be announced in early January, 2011.

OK, who gets eliminated on the first cutdown .....
I would eliminate:
Roger Craig. I don't feel that he was the reason the 49'ers won, and he never had great stats.
Jerome Bettis was always good .... but is that enough for the Hall of Fame? 3.9 yards/rush does not scream Hall of Fame, plus you have to compare him to the otehrs in this class.
Tim Brown has the problem of having Cris Carter in the same class, with far more TDs and similar stats.
Terrell Davis: 6 years ...... No Hall of Fame. Longevity has to count.
Art Modell: He enters the Hall over my dead body.
Andre Reed shares Tim Brown's problem, only to a greater degree. He would have to jump Brown as well IMHO.
Willie Roaf: Great player, but not in this class of players.
Aeneas Williams: Great player, again, not in this class.
Given that I expect Tagliabue to be in this year's final class, you can probably eliminate the other "non players". That would drop Sabol, DeBartolo, Coryell and Young.
That's 12 elminations. Leaving the following as finalists:
Cris Carter Dermonti Dawson Richard Dent Chris Doleman Marshall Faulk Kevin Greene Ray Guy Charles Haley Lester Hayes Cortez Kennedy Curtis Martin Deion Sanders Shannon Sharp Paul Tagliabue
That's 14. I would add Coryell as my final finalist, because he had a huge impact on the league with his offense. As I said, I don;t expect 2 non-players to make it, and Tagliabue is a lock, but he is deserving of finalist status.
My top 5:
Tagliabue (The commissioner who took over the impossible task of taking over for Pete Rozelle) Ray Guy (The best ever at his position) Deion Sanders (choking back the puke) Chris Doleman (21 sacks in a single season is Hall of Fame material) Chris Carter (130 TDs in his career, far outshines even a really good class of receivers)

I just looked at who redefined and set a new standard their position.....and overlooked Ray Guy. I would swap him for Richard Dent then. You didn't address Ed Sabol....I think he was instrumental in making the NFL the household entity it is today. My list now is:
Chris Carter
Don Coryell
Lester Hayes
Ed Sabol
Ray Guy

I agree on Sabol, I just don't see him getting in before Tagliabue.
I also don't see 2 non players in on the same class.

How many people can be inducted in a single year? There were 7 last year.
Found it: 4-7 per year.

You're probably right. I had the same problem with Sanders (nausea)...but he'll more than likely get the votes.

There is a 0% chance that neither Faulk nor Sanders get in.
Both were just on the NFL's top 100 rankings Faulk was #71, Sanders #34.

It would be a travesty if a guy like Coryell, who had a tremendous impact in HOW the game is played doesn't get in.

You are right about that. Dan Fouts would be just another QB without Coryell. If I had to eliminate someone from my list to add him. I'd probably take Carter off. Everyone else had some sort of impact on the game.

That sounds good to me so I will stick with it....except the dead body part.....I do think Art deserves the HOF, but that is a old topic and won't argue it any more.....he will get in, but it will be after his death.
If the HOF wasn't 30 miles south, he's be in now.

I know I have 2 non players in there and it is very unlikely that will happen. I'd like to see CC get in, finally. He shed a tear on Inside The NFL a few years ago because he was thumbed. I didn't care for that but its finally his time.

I was gonna say Ray Guy should have been in from the day he was first eligible! Not a Raiders fan, but anytime i saw the Raiders i would have feared the guy as an opponent, and that was an odd thing to say about a Punter in those days.

1. Sanders is a lock and despite his obnoxiousness, should be.
2. Sabol quite possibly had the greatest impact on the marketing of the NFL. His collection and vision for the NFL Films is what makes this game we love seem so epic and important.
3. Tagliabue helped expand the league by 4 teams (Jax, Carolina, reborn Cleveland and Houston), re-aligned the divisions and scored crazy television contracts to make the game significantly more profitable for owners and players.
4. Sharpe could talk the talk and walk the walk.
5. All Chris Carter did was catch touchdowns...over and over again.
6. Bettis was excellent in all areas of the game for many years. I'd have to give him the slight nod over someone like Faulk and Craig only because of longevity. Those guys, especially Faulk, were AMAZING for a few years. But Bettis was consistently good for longer. But I could easily make a case for Faulk here too.

Cris Carter -- "All he does is catch TD's" Don "Air" Coryell -- changed the game Ray Guy -- One of the best to ever play the position. And long over looked. Charles Haley -- A dominating player who just took his team to the play offs year in year out no matter whom he played for. The original freak! Lester Hayes -- He was good enough to keep Hanford Dixon from going to many pro bowls. Deon Sanders may get the nod over Hayes, but Hayes was a complete player from the corner position and has been passed over in the past. With Faulk I always felt that there should have been another chapter in his Career. The journey seemed short lived. I have no doubt that he will have his bust in the HOF.

Bettis had eight 1,000 rushing seasons in 13 years. Faulk had seven in 12 years. Bettis averaged 71.2 yards per game. Faulk averaged 69.8. Bettis had 91 rushing TD's. Faulk had 100. Bettis averaged 3.9 yards per carry. Faulk averaged 4.3.
Now here's where Faulk blows away Bettis. Bettis had 200 receptions for 1,449 receiving yards and 3 TD's in his career. Faulk had 87 receptions for 1,048 yards and 5 TD's...in 1999. He had a total of 767 receptions for 6,875 receiving yards and 36 TD's in his career.
Bettis is a very good player. Faulk is an all-time great player. He was the best player on one of the best offenses of all time. If he doesn't get in the first try, something is broken

Not bad for a 2nd round pick WR IMMSC

(Stationed at Barstow then,..) My son and I were there, I believe it was his first Browns game ever. Hayes ran his mouth all week how he was going to shut Web down, and Bernie picked him apart, 2 TD's I think. Raiders fan completely out of control,... Still liked the way Lester played,...he's HOF deserving.

No speech of any kind will ever top Rickey Henderson's Hall of Fame speech. But if there is one that could come close, it will be Deion Sanders.

WOW this is a tough list to pick from. I wish they would just induct the guys as soon as they are eligible, with no limit of inductees. It just makes no sense to me how, old timers get inducted 20+ years later. What did they do from that time on to finally become a HOF? It's not like they were adding on to their stats.
Anyway, its hard not to see Sharpe, Sanders, Carter, or Faulk make it. I think it is a joke that Carter hasn't being inducted yet (another example of why the hell does he have to wait extra years?)
Art Modell better not be inducted. He probably does not want to be inducted while he is alive, because his life will be at risk to come to the induction ceremony.

I can't disagree with any of that. I was looking at it from a "more than stats" angle. Faulk was amazing and certainly a FFL stud for about 6 solid years with a great team around him in StL where he put up amazing stats and got his ring. He also had the luxury of having amazing talent around him.
But Bettis was always the guy who kept the Steelers good (as much as it pains me to say). 3rd and 1? Bettis would move the chains every time. 4th down at the goal line? Touchdown every time. Big, fast, hard to tackle and the guy who was the Steelers "tough identity" for a long time. He was their emotional leader but never a "stats" guy. He passed the eye-test for 13 solid years. That'd be my arguments for him.
I think Faulk will make it in first. But I feel Bettis can't be overlooked.

Barstow MCLB.....never was there. 29 stumps for a spell.
I guess you could say Slaughter and I are home boys. I lived in Stockton from 69-72. Grandma God rest her soul was a life long Raider. She called me talking smack LOL and wanted to make a wager with me on the game as she always would when ever they played us (the Browns). This game let me finally not have to hear about 'Red Right 88' any more

Sanders is a gimme ... he's in. Carter is the best of three WRs that all deserve to be in, so he should probably get the nod. Ray Guy should of been in years ago ... hopefully the idiot voters will get off the whole, "he's a kicker" thing, and rightfully vote the guy in. As pointed out before ... Marshal Faulk was one of a kind. He put up compariable rush numbers to Bettis, but also wrote the book on being a "receiving" RB.
That's four guys. Of the non-players, Coryell sort of invented the pass-first-type offenses that we see today, and had a direct influence on the game. Sabol and Tags are just as worthy ... but Coryell died this past year. He deserves it. Tags and Sabol will get in soon enough.
If they opt for 7 guys, Hayes and Dent probably deserve to get in as well. Traitor #1 shouldn't even sniff the top 7 with a list this deep.
