TWC doesn't broadcast anything in 1080p.

I know, I could have clarified better. I meant Blu-Ray or movies streamed in 1080p or TV programming in 1080i as compared to 720.

Gotcha. I can see a difference between a BluRay and a HD broadcast program. 720p and 1080i broadcasts are a different story, unless I'm extremely close (read: distance unsuitable for viewing) to the screen.

Yes I do ... but to be honest, I have SDTVs except for the little set I have in my office, so 1080 or 720 probably won't make a huge difference to me.

So, I went on a chat with TWC a moment ago to do some checking... here is a transcript of that chat.. (I've deleted my email but everything else is what it is)

Quote:

ennifer DSouza: Thank you for contacting Time Warner Cable. At the end of our chat you will be given the option of taking a brief survey. My name is Jennifer. Please give me a moment while I access your account.
Rick: Ok
Jennifer DSouza: Can you please elaborate your issue?
Rick: It's not so much an issue.. I just want to know, does TWC broadcast anything at 1080p resolution
Rick: I just haven't found anything yet and was wondering
Rick: are you still there
Jennifer DSouza: You would like to know if we support for 1080p resolution, am I correct?
Rick: NO,,, I want to know if anything is being broadcase in 1080p
Jennifer DSouza: I will provide you with the appropriate information.
Rick: OK
Jennifer DSouza: We do not broadcast anything on 1080p.
Jennifer DSouza: We broadcast in 1080i.
Rick: How about 1080i?
Rick: Ok, I was looking for anything like that on the resolution on my new TV and frankly, every station I looked at, the signal was coming in at 720...
Rick: Is there something I need to change on my cable box? or is there just something wrong here on my end
Jennifer DSouza: I will provide you with the steps to set the 1080i resolution.
Rick: Thank you
Rick: Is that coming via email or are you going to type it out here in Chat
Jennifer DSouza: I am going to type it.
Jennifer DSouza: Aspect Ratio is set from Settings - Display - Aspect Ratio.

1) Press Settings

Settings is the Default Category in Settings.

2) Arrow left/right to Settings - Display

3) Press Arrow up/down to select Output Resolution.

4) Press Select.

5) Arrow up/down to select the desired Output Resolution:

1. 720p
2. 1080i
3. Auto Select
4. 480i
5. 480p

6. Press Select
Jennifer DSouza: I've also emailed you a copy of this chat transcript at xxxxxxxxxxxx for reference.
Rick: Outstanding.,., one last question
Jennifer DSouza: Sure.
Rick: What is the difference between 1080p and 1080i
Rick: and will you support 1080p at some point
Jennifer DSouza: We do not support 1080p.
Rick: Yeah, you mentioned that... will you in the future?
Jennifer DSouza: As of now, there is no update about this.
Jennifer DSouza: As soon as we get the update on this, we will surely inform you.
Rick: THanks and have a great day

For informational purposes, the way to set you cable box is described in the chat text.. so if that helps someone,, cool...

One thing I noticed.. I went to reset my cable box to 1080i and found that it was already set for that.

Yet, when I check the TV via the Onscreen help area, it still shows that the signal is coming in at 720......

So, I'm not sure what to do now. I suppose I'll have to call TWC and have them look at it..

As you can see, I never did get an answer as to what the difference between 1080p and 1080i is.

1080p v 1080i

Progressive v. Interlaced. It's just the order that they draw the lines. Old TVs were all interlaced because it involved something actually moving at high speeds up and down and they realized they could put out a better refresh rate if they projected pixels on the way down AND the way up. Conventional HDTVs (read: tube) can only do interlaced. For some reason that I don't know (probably to accommodate the aforementioned TVs, but possibly because it was just what they were used to) stations broadcast in 1080i. 1080p is something you'll usually get from your blu-ray player, PS3, or something that is only broadcast digitally, like a satellite-specific channel or a digital-cable only channel.

OK, so most of the stations in Youngstown broadcast regularly in either 480i or 720p.

The exception is WFMJ 21, which broadcasts in 1080i. They broadcast just about everything in 1080i according to my TV display.

So what's what? lol I know that 480i is more or less standard TV. 720p is HDTV, but not 1080p. So, 1080i is less than 1080p? Is WFMJ then a case of jumping on an HDTV standard that is not going to be supported for long?

1080i and 1080p are both the same resolution.

1080i draws the horizontal lines in the order 1,3,5,...1077,1079,1080,1078,1076,...6,4,2
1080p draws the horizontal lines in the order 1,2,3,...1078,1079,1080

It's the same resolution. For the same refresh rate there shouldn't be any difference even to videophiles.

720p, 720i, 1080p, 1080i are all considered HD standards.

OK so i was wrong. 1080p has more columns of pixels.

1080p: 1888×1062
1080i: 1440×1080

HDTV standards

also, this.

So if I have this right and looking at your example, I think I do, it's basically impossible to tell the difference between 1080p and 1080i..

Right?

If you can't tell the difference between the pictures, then yes. I can tell a difference, but it's not a big one.

It's the same difference between an original DVD player and a Progressive scan one (480i vs. 480p).

The difference is in the perceived smoothness of the picture because you are seeing all scan lines at the same time with 'p', whereas with 'i' you are only seeing every other line at one time.
Your brain generally can't discern it and ignores it and puts everything together for you, but a progressive image will appear smoother, particularly when there is lots of motion involved.
