My dog Nola was diagnosed with heart worm on her last visit to the vet in Sept. Given her age of at least 11 years....we got her in 2000 and she was about 1 then...and with what the vet said, we opted for no treatment....no regrets there. I have never been one to spend hundreds of dollars on a pet to string out the inevitable a few months....or even a year for that matter. She's had a good, full life and brought much happiness to this household.
She hasn't eaten since Thanksgiving and is winding down this morning, so I had to go dig that damn hole and gather the rocks.
She has been incontinent for several weeks which has made it hard. I will keep her in her outside area during the days( a covered, sheltered porch), but she has always slept inside, so that is how it has remained. I just line "her" bed in a back bedroom with a garbage bag and cover it with old towels. I have been sleeping in there as well in the other bed. I am a light sleeper. She would wake me if she jumped down. Lot's of towel washing has been going on around here.
Now it's just wait.
I really hope to go upstairs and find her passed on rather than this linger several more days.....but she is comfortable and not in any pain, so it will happen when it happens.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

I always hate to hear when a friendship like that is broken, so many animals (and people for that matter) deserve such companions. My heart goes out to you...

Very sorry about your impending loss, Ballpeen. Don't know if you have ever had a dog put down before, but if you haven't, it is very quick and easy with no pain or suffering to your beloved pet. Although your girl is not suffering, it is likely causing her a great deal of stress to be feeling unwell, and even moreso, in that she is incontinent. Good dogs are upset when they go in the house - it goes against everything they've been taught. I don't presume to know your situation, or give you advice you didn't ask for, but only suggest that maybe one last trip to the vet might be in order, not only for your Nola's sake, but for the sanity of your household. All the best.

I lost my dog Charlie a little over 2 years ago. I definitely feel your pain Peen.
I hope she passes easily, and without pain.
My sincerest condolences when she does.

Hang in there Buddy,....we went through this 3+ years ago. Exactly the same medical/physical scenario as you've described. Rather than wait it out, we took him to the vet and had him put down. I did not go in the room, couldn't handle it.
Sincerest regards,....ORJ

I hate to hear this my friend. I've had a dog in my life since I was very young, but for some reason, the older I've become, the more attatched I get.
My Tanni bone will be nine in February and even now, I'm dreading the days her and I must endure such a thing. My heart truely goes out to you my friend.

Uh, dude... why don't you just man up and have her put down. She is suffering. I mean hell, you decided her death sentence by not getting the treatment (whis is NOT terribly expensive, especially for smaller dogs), at least have the decency to end the suffering. It won't cost more than a bottle of Jack. Hell, take her out back and shoot her or something.

When our dog died a couple years ago it seemed to help a little bit to dig that hole. I remember me and my brother dug the grave and we both kinda felt better afterward, once we filled it back up.
It was a messed up week. Our dog was completely healthy on Monday and dead by thursday. We took her to the vet on Wednesday cuz she wasn't eating and hekept her on an IV overnight to boost her immune system. This turned out to be the wrong move b/c apparently her immune system was going haywire and her white blood cells were attacking her red blood cells and eventually her red blood cell count dropped so low that she was dead by morning.
It was kinda tough seeing as though she was only 5 years old and went from healthy to dead in a matter of days.
I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch......

This is one of the most difficult situations a person can endure. Our dogs are dependant upon us for everything that matters to them... and they repay us with undying loyalty and an almost perfect kind of love and devotion. Such a presence in a household is a blessing, and it's loss is almost unbearable.
When it was Tillie's 'time,' I knew it in my bones. We'd found some treatments to extend not only the length of her life, but also its quality for quite some time- but the inevitable came due eventually.
As difficult as it was, I stayed with her throughout the euthanasia proceedure. It broke my heart into little pieces, but I was glad I did it. Because I was able to "walk the rockier path," I've been able to look back on that awful moment with a sense of completeness, content in the memory that her last experience in life was being cradled by someone she'd loved unconditionally.
It seemed only fitting, since she gave so much to us in her lifetime.
My heart goes out to you, 'Peen... I know what you're going through.
all my best, Clem

You know she is suffering??
I decided her death sentence?? Her age has nothing to do with it??
No....Pat and I are pretty content having it done this way thank-you.
We think she is far more content here at her home then heading out to a stainless steel table to be put down.
Personally, I think manning up is giving her love to the end rather than toss her out like you toss out something once it is no longer useful.
I appreciate your advice, but I'll pass.

Sorry to hear about this peen. A dog is just like a family member and i feel ur pain.. I remember about 5 years ago, i got a call while sitting in my favorite watering hole one day from my dad balling his eyes out screaming charlie died charlie died. It took me a second to realize ooh the family dog which at that time i havent lived at home for about 4 years or so. I hung up the phone and started to cry as well in front of all the other patrons. Just shows how much a dog can influence are lives. My dads still got a picture of him hung on the wall and we talk about him quite a bit smiling and laughing of the stuff he did while he was with us. My condolences to ya bro.

You have my thoughts and prayers Peen, it's a tough thing you're going through. In my view pets are family too, and I still miss that big galoot of a Rottie you see in my sig picture, Make Nola as comfortable as possible , and just pray for a peaceful passing.

Another long range diagnosis.

I'm sure purp said those things for what he thought were all the right reasons, But putting a dog down is a highly personal decision. One that isn't arrived at with any ease. And each situation is different.
I'd probably agree with him if Nola was in pain and discomfort, but if she's not, then allowing her to be with your family and feeling the love that you have for her would seem to be the right thing to do.
Again, I feel for you and your family Peen..

so sad Peen... I'm glad your dog is not suffering- that has always been my deciding factor. I had a dog go with a throat cancer- got to the point she couldn't eat, couldn't walk straight and lost tons of weight, drooling, couldn't swallow and hard time breathing. Just deteriorated in a matter of days. Hardest thing i ever did was hand her over to the vet.

Sorry to hear about this, Peen...
Sounds like you are handling it the best you can. That is all you can do.
My family just went through this in Mid-October... Granted I don't live back at home anymore, but it was very tough none the less... My parents have an "empty nest" with me and my brothers all grown up now, so our dog was almost like a child to my Mom,,,
Hang in there, man,

Nola went peacefully about 11:20 this morning.
She is now at rest.

Now, the question I immediately got, and continue to get after 3 plus years, is when are you getting another companion ?

Sorry to hear that, Peen.
I have been through it a few times, and it never gets easier. But, I wouldn't trade a single second of my time with my various dogs for anything.
It's always amazed me that some of the biggest, toughest guys I know get so upset when their dog dies. There's just that special connection, that unconditional love.

Sorry,Ballpeen. I know it is hard. A good dog has been my biggest blessing before; the hardest truth is that we get so attached and we only get them for so short a time. I'll go say a special one for you and for Nola. Hope all who loved her find strength in her memories.

Our condolences. Having lost 3 of our dogs in the last 4 years we know what you're feeling.
The best thing we did was adopt another dog soon after. There is nothing like having a dog in the house.
Take care, my friend.
