Ok after watching Frye not blossom this season its pretty obvious he won't be our starting QB next year. The way I see it is the front office will bring in a FA to compete with Frye in camp and that QB will beat him out! Then there also is the option of drafting a QB im very positive this won't happen we don't have a solid vet on this team at QB and we need one in a bad way and that is the biggest reason why we pay for a FA QB. The other reason being RAC and Savage want to win now If we draft a QB now we have another 2yrs before we compete for the playoffs.

So now we ask ourselves who is available as a Free Agent QB next year? Well the pickens are pretty slim. But there are two names that stick out. 1. Matt Shaub, backup to Michael Vick and a real gunslinger in the limited time he's played. In my opinion we roll the dice on him. There's also Damon Huard who lit it up for KC this year, but im not so sure Huard isnt just a product of a great Oline and amazing running game plus hes getting old. So I ask all of my fellow fans how they think this will unfold in the next 6 months? In my opinion it would be better to do both draft Quinn in the first round and sign Shaub. Relicate Charlie to second string and let them all battle it out. The way we're playing now we'll probable draft top 5, which will still leave us with a great linemen to acquire in the 2nd round.. What are your thoughts?

Opening day Browns starting QBs:

1999 - Ty Detmer
2000 - Tim Couch
2001 - Tim Couch
2002 - Kelly Holcomb
2003 - Kelly Holcomb
2004 - Jeff Garcia
2005 - Trent Dilfer
2006 - Charlie Frye

See a pattern of why we always lose? QUIT CHANGING QBs, GET A REAL RUNNING BACK AND FIX THE LINE ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How will it hurt to challenge Frye to earn his job on this team? You gotta be kidding me. I realize the oline needs to be tottaly revamped but we need a veteran QB as well.

Not saying we don't challenge him; but he isn't the MAIN problem. We don't need a major QB controversy on top of everything else.

just curious as to why this is the only position we have to stay the course on?

If you continue to focus on the QB, you'll continue to overlook the OL and RB situation - both of which are more important as they can make average QBs look great. Side note - Last check going into the 4th, Tomlinson vs. Oakland had 12 total carries - Rivers subsequently was 10-25 with an int. It's not a coincidence.

Actually we stay with what we have in the QB dept. the TE dept. the WR dept. the LB dept.

We need a RB, OL, DL, CB.

Even with a great oline and RB w're still gonna have problems we need a QB that can react. Watch Brees get rid of the ball hes one of the most least sacked QBs in the NFL and you cant tell me its because of his oline? Give me a break. They had one of the worst lines last year and all they have thats different is a center who isnt half as good as Bentley and a rookie guard. So how is it with this crappy to very mediocre oline that they've given up the least sacks in the NFL. I think I would say its the QB! After tonights game its the first time Ive said Frye needs to go. Hes had plenty of time to develop and has not! He's not the future but If he is he'll have his shot to prove it in preseason against someone like Shaub or Huard.

I agree I think we can do all 3. We adress the QB and CB in free agency and RB, OL and DL in the draft. Lets not hand Frye this starting job again next year like he deserves it and If we were to do that and he gets hurt who plays back up the unproven guys we have now? I dont think so!

I think not staying the course is making coaching changes and Im not ready to say that needs to happen. Staying the course for next year is keeping our philosophy in place. Challenging the QB with some competition is healthy. You play better or you lose your job!

Well, Matt Schaub is the only way we could go for a change. I'd be all for it, but hes restricted and to get a trade with the Falcons, I think they said something like they would want a 1st and two 3rds. Which won't happen. So unless we go out and draft Quinn or Broham, it looks like we're sticking with Charlie for another year.

Besides, any QB can look bad with our offensive line, they're horrible. Droughns is a dud, Wright doesnt have the talent, but Harrison would make for a good back up in the future.

because we're set at all of these positions? not really.
the TE position is the only one we're really set with.
WR - DN is not a starting WR and will most likely be gone after this year. JJ has dropped more balls this year than any time in his career. he'll need replaced soon.

LB - WM is on his last leg and it's starting to buckle. we need to replace him next year.

QB - we have no depth whatsoever. are you willing to gamble that charlie is the answer for years to come? how many years do you hold the team back waiting to see if he can be something that he's never been? if we keep him as QB, we need to change the schemme to fit what he does best. if not, we just cross our fingers and hope he can do what he's never had to do before, and that is to use his head.

LB-we got Chaun Thompson or Mcmillan instead of Mcginest, both share a lot of play time in his position as it is.

WR-We've still got JJ for a couple years, we've got Braylon, Travis Wilson will see more play time and Josh Cribbs is locked up.

And QB, I'm satisfied with what we have

I'll take Troy Smith and a side of O-line and D-line, please.

Maybe an objective view from somewhere outside of Ohio is needed.

I really don't see any comparison, Akili was a one year college wonder with all the combine measurements. Never made it as a pro. Could not read defenses and adjust to the pro game speed.

Troy is an "athlete" that is now a QB. His progression as a QB has been remarkable. He has lead a big time college team for 3 years, including big games, were he has performed well. He dose not have the measurables of Akili, so he wont go as high. But he may make it as an NFL QB.

Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

What kind of pressure is there in the SENIOR BOWL? LOL none.

Frye has done nothing in a big game his entire life. IIRC he never won states, and always lost to teams he was overmatched against in college. He didn't carry a team on his back and get a W through sheer will.

This is why I'm *POSITIVE* Vince Young will be amazing. He took an undermanned Texas team (compared to heavy favorite USC at least) and took over a game like I'd never seen before. The biggest game of his life, in the biggest situation of his life, and he thrived.

I see those exact same qualities in Troy Smith. He willed his team to victory over M*chigan in the Big House 2 years ago, he got in a shootout this year vs. Michigan and won, and his first year starting when he wasn't that great of a QB, he stepped up and took over vs. Michigan. Took over vs. Texas, dominated the Fiesta Bowl, etc. etc. etc.

It's also why I wanna stay the hell away from Chad Henne, the guy hasn't won a big game at Michigan in his life. I read in the PD this morning that some Browns scouts have Henne rated higher than Smith, if he comes out and we take him, IMO we screwed ourselves.

Remember this, when someone has first round abilities and talent (guys like Krenzel don't count because they're not NFL caliber QB's, just a great leader), big players make big plays in big games.

I'll be saying that all the way up to draft day.

I have finally come to the conclusion that Charlie is not very good. This hurts in that I have backed him all the way since the beginning of the season. I see Matt Leinart passing for over 400 yards today. I see Vince Young leading his team to an impossible comback. I see Drew Brees taking New Orleans to a possible playoff berth. What do these QB's have in common. They play for teams with questionable offensive lines. They play for teams that drafted very early in April. They are all producing big time results. Our guy looks like a fish out of water. I just can't say that even with a better offensive line, he will be all that much better. I truly wish it wasn't so.

By the way, is there a worse teammate anywhere than the Michigan Mouth, Braylon Edwards? He's becoming a major jerk.

NICK no QB can complete passes on his back,

If Charlies fist read is covered he's screwed, by that time he has to run for his life, .....We dont need a QB we need a O-Line

this upcoming offseason will be very interesting... Frye is not making plays like he should be.. His team is getting frustrated with him.. and they SHOULD!!

my suggestion is this... the Browns change up the AFC North by getting TROY SMITH!! a FAST QB who can make plays with his feet and his arm..

TROY SMITH!!

then get more o-line through the draft in later rounds.. ANYWHERE!! 2nd through 7th.. lol.. the o-line needs major help!

If they do this, then they better be able to find a solid Running Back through Free Agency. I hope you can draft quality Tackles and Guards in the later rounds as well. Not to mention we need a new Nose Tackle because big Ted should be about done.

I just think we have bigger holes to fill other than QB.

EXACTLY! Thank you. I believe that this also has alot to do wityh Charlie lockiong on to his recievers. He picks the guys who he think is going to be open at the line, snaps the ball and locks on, I mean he usually doesnt have time to go through his reads anyway so he gos with his best bet

2 thoughts on the subject, and where they lead...

1. pretty much any QB playing behind this OL will be beat into ruin...taking a QB now is just sabotaging another career...
2. Charlie continues to make the same mistakes over and over...we are not set at QB as long as we get the play we are getting...

Most logical conclusion: upgrade the line, and let Charlie take the beating until we have an average-above average unit...THEN replace Charlie, provided he doesn't improve dramatically by that time...

I have said it before and I'll continue to say it. There's no reason to pull the plug on Frye, yet. We need to focus on other parts of the team and there's no sense in messing with the QB position, yet. He's not broke, just badly bent, and we should be able to get at least one more season out of him. If the rest of the team gets it together and he's still struggling, then we can draft whatever UberQuarterback everyone's pimping at that time.

J.

what choices does he have, why is he making these same mistakes over and over again, well maybe because he can :

A. Take another sack 2-3 seconds after hicking the ball
B. Look off this first reciever and than gets drilled into the ground AGAIN.
C. Throw up the ball as he gets drill into the ground AGAIN and hopeS a reciever actually (Comes Back ) for the ball AND than holds onto it.

Common, Charlie isnt the problem here,
1. No O-line Play
2. No Running Game...

i agree, we need to let charlie have a chance here. lets get lecharles back, add a few players in the draft of FA and give the man a chance. ill tell you what no one wants in 2007, a rookie QB. because we all knew 2006 was a throw away year (whether people admit it or not) and 2007 needs to be an ACTUAL football season.

Exactly, if I have to put up with another 6-10 season in 2007, I might not be able to put up with the Browns anymore. Throwing a new QB in there in 07 will set us back even further.

The Steelers are calling for Big Ben's head.
The Browns are calling for Frye's head.
McNair is putting up just as bad numbers but no one is calling for his head.

The difference between the three?

The Ravens have by far the best defense.
The Ravens run the ball more than they pass.

You do not need a stud QB to win games.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, we've changed QB's a bunch and see where it's gotten us,,,NOWHERE.

Hey, I'm like a lot of other people, I'm not 100% sure that Charlie is the guy, but until you fix the other issues with the Offense (line, RB etc) how the heck do you know what we have in him...

Besides what some people think (I'm thinking of you Knox ) we do have time,, Charlie has time. This is NOT a team heading to the playoffs next season... WE just aren't that good,, SO why not take this time to see if Charlie can develop,,, Quit rushing it just because you think its a good Idea and you can't figure out the rest of the issues.

for how long? how many years do you give him? if he doesn't pan out, how many years does it take the next QB?
you can tell by watching any rook on the 1st day if he has the skills to develop. what skills are you seeing in chuck? he's mobile and that's it.

Sorry, no breaks for you... (I'm the break nazi,,,, Kinda like the soupnazi on Sienfeld)

Man, I don't expect you or anyone to be patient for any length of time,, you have to find that within yourself... you either are or your not and the length of time depends totally on your personal ability to endure pain.

All I'm saying is that if this managment group won't address other issues of importance, then changing QB's is nothing more than applying a bandaid.

Name me one QB, past or present that can really produce behind this line and with virtually no running game?

Now, tell me which one is available for us to get next season, then I'll listen to you.

[color:"white"] for how long? how many years do you give him?

well you give him usually more then 13 starts, I think next week will mark 1year of him as starting QB, I maybe wrong but its pretty close

[color:"white"]if he doesn't pan out, how many years does it take the next QB?

well it depends on the other holes in your team. In cleveland by now if you havent fuigured out its the OL you need to get a clue, weve had what 6 or 7 different starters in 7 years. Fix the OL first and in the meantime let Frye get beaten up. Why draft a new QB just too have him develop the same bad habits as Frye did because of bad protection

[color:"white"]you can tell by watching any rook on the 1st day if he has the skills to develop

really.......hmmm which pro team do you work for? and how many 1st rnd QB draft busts have thier been? Im sure those teams that invested that high pick knew the first time that Rookie played he was not an NFL QB

[color:"white"]what skills are you seeing in chuck? he's mobile and that's it.

you're right he is mobile, the biggest reason why you can obviously see that s becaue there is NO O-LINE. if he had times to actually make a read and not have to lock on youi might see some other skills

now Im no big charlie groupie, however I do think he has done enough to maybe look at upgrading the TEAM with him staying as the starter. My point is this QB carousel everyone has begun to talk about tyring to start agaion has been a failure in the past and will fail again untill the real issues are fixed

Dude, you are [b]ON

I want to see Charlie behind a line that can run the ball and protect before I call for his head,...as for Steeler fans calling for Ben's head, they're too caught up in last year. Things change.

Now, all talk aside on Troy and Brady, I'm goin' out on the crazy limb and get this kid McFadden from Arkansas.
