we live in cleveland--i'm hearing 1-2 feet of snow on top of the 2 feet already in place by next monday/tuesday.
i'm hoping for snow and not rain/ice as that will cause power outages.

are the meteorologists really being fearful or is it more sensationalism?

i hope you all stay safe.

also, a concern: get a snow rake and start raking off snow you have now onto the ground. that way your roof won't collapse.

meteorologists were accurate as far as high snowfall totals, but their timeline was off by about 18 hours....it should have ended tuesday and not wednesday.

It's Cleveland weather... you just can't tell until it gets here.

Haven't had to do this the 39 years I've been in Cleveland... including back in '77. Of course, it all depends on the pitch of your roof and whether or not they used twigs to frame the roof

Nobody knows much about this storm yet...it's not even on shore. Wait until later tonight or tomorrow morning and they will have a better idea.

My local mets have had us as ice, as rain, and as snow. Still, the truth is, they don't know yet. All they know is some form of precipitation might fall this weekend.

I doubt anyone really knows much yet. Jeff Tanchak could go on air and say we will get sea cow hail and no one would care.

Snow hoe hoe and a bottle of rum .......

Anyway, they are saying anywhere from 6 inches to upwards of 14 inches here in Youngstown.

It depends on how the storm tracks.

Pffft, 14 inches, that's just a dusting out here. I have noticed how easy driving in the snow in Ohio is after driving through the mountains in a blizzard (in my ford focus).

Last year we had that really, really bad snowstorm, (about 2 feet) and it was so deep that it was over the bumper of my truck.

I figured that I'd just blast my way through it anyway.

I made it 3 feet out of my garage.

That's kind of like - 3 years ago maybe? Got my car stuck in the morning - had to pull it out with the H3. School was cancelled and I wasn't working, so my daughter and I rode 4 wheeler - promptly got it stuck - pulled it out with the H3. Then when my wife woke up I said "let's go for a drive". Made it to my barn drive, saw a huge drift - went through it. Turned around tried to make new tracks through the drift - and ended up with 4 wheels off the ground.

3 vehicles - 3 stuck. 1 day. All on my property.

It's cold here, but no snow in the forecast.

Good luck with the snow.

I will be up for the Steeler game so I expect to see some this winter.

It's pretty rare for Gulf moisture to hit a cold front this far south to turn it in to snow.

The warmth of the southern breeze usually wins out.

It was last year here.

I got a call from my opening shift manager telling me that she couldn't get out of her driveway, and that her street hadn't been touched yet. I jumped in my truck and figured that I could make it ...... and after 3 feet realized that I better call my district manager and let her know that we weren't going to be open anything resembling on time.

I heard yesterday that we were one inch away from having half the seasonal snowfall average out at the airport. HALF of the SEASONAL average! lol. This is ridiculous.

Update:
from my understanding the storm itself will be a snow/rain mix sun. morning and sun. afternoon.

but then after that we get lake effect plus winds on mon. and tues. it is not just normal lake/geauga/ashtabula lake effect, but le snow all the way south to the US 30 corridor--Mansfield-Wooster-Canton-Alliance-Salem-Columbiana

My WeatherBug just popped up and said that there is a Winter Storm Watch in effect from today through next Wednesday. That's a long watch period.

Fortunately, I just stocked up on stuff at the grocery store. lol

i've always thought they got those terms backwards.

they issue a watch to warn you a storm might be coming.

they issue a warning when it's there and all you can do is sit inside and watch it.

I'm not taking any chances and just picked up a snowblower....if anybody's thinking of doing the same, they're going fast. There are plenty of the smaller ones on the shelf, but the smaller two stagers are selling out. I settled for a display model at Menard's.

I used to just pay the neighbor kids to plow my long driveway, but they'll be out of town this weekend. They're also getting older and have better things to do with their time.

For the most part, my lawn tractor with a blade does us just fine. I love to bundle up and push snow. (no - not with a shovel - no way) There have been years where I've plowed both drives - then decided I wasn't done, so I plowed snow from the yard BACK onto the drive - so I could plow it off again. Playing in the snow is great.

I believe it was last year - maybe the year before......my daughter loves to be pulled in a sled behind the 4 wheeler. I have 2 acres - and in an afternoon, I had put 21 miles on the 4 wheeler, pulling her - on our 2 acres! 21 miles.

Her friends call - 3 of them anyway - when we have snow: "Is your dad pulling you in the sled? Can I come over?" It's great.

The first time one of her friends was here - first time for her anyway - we hadn't been out 5 minutes and I dumped her - she totally landed face first. My first thought was "Dear God, make so she's alright. Please don't let her be mad or hurt.".

She got up as I was running to her with a smile on her face like you can't believe!

Snow is great!

I saw on the weather they are calling for us to possibly get as much as 2/10 of a inch in the valleys on Sunday.

I better go stock up on the essentials.! Nearing a quarter inch of snow is news around here.

I had friends that lived south of Nashville. (They moved from Michigan)

They said that people freaked out when there was a dusting of snow. It was like the Japanese running from Godzilla .......

The meteorologists still don't know where this storm is headed or what it will bring, folks.

Instead of forecasting, it will be nowcasting. Look out the window and that's what's happening now.

Ugh.

Good analogy...I might steal that.

But in fairness, there are probably only 50 snow plows in the state....all owned by TDOT to plow interstate highways. Ok, that number might be low, but it is a great analogy as well....I have never seen our city running snow plows, and we are the 4th largest city in the state...actually the 3rd, but Knoxville gets to claim the massive UT student population.

Salt spreaders....here it is two guys low on the totem pole in the back of a dump truck with shovels throwing treated sand down at intersections.

Here, clearing the roads of snow is mostly waiting for the sun to shine for a few hours.....seriously.

Add in the hills as well as the melt, refreeze as ice overnight, and it does cause problems in some ways many times worse than anything I experienced living in Cleveland the first 20 or so years of my life.

Ice is more of the problem here.....but, people being accustomed to more ice on the roads tend to think snow is the same.

You and I know it isn't.

6 am I get a call - our school is on some "instant alert" type of thing - you sign up for it and they call you if there's a delay......cancellation, etc.

So, at 6 am the phone rings - I grab it, it says Archbold schools. Listen to the message - 2 hr. delay. Fine, I try to go back to sleep but can't. Wife gets home at 7:05 am - "roads bad?" "no", "is it snowing"? "no".

I looked outside - we had just over a half inch of snow on our asphalt drive - and they delayed school 2 hours......I mean - really?

Plus, I was supposed to help in my daughters class today - but with the delay, and the work I had scheduled, I couldn't.

half an inch of snow and we delay? I can see a southern state doing that, but in Northern Ohio??????

Plus, we're already hearing about the "huge storm that might hit saturday night, OR sunday morning, OR might miss us. Anywhere from no snow to 6 inches.........Or more. Or it might be freezing rain.........or just rain. But maybe nothing - more at 11. What they mean is "we have no clue, but we want you to watch us ham it up to get our ratings up - we'll know more Sat. at 11 pm - when the storm might be here, or might be not here."

Cutting back on road crews or saving on salt.

I agree....I went to school up there. I'll bet we didn't have more then 15 days canceled due to weather over 12 years.....I am talking like 8-10 inches overnight, which on the west side at least, didn't happen all that often.

You got up, walked to the bus stop.

If they didn't show up with-in 40 minutes of the scheduled time....a school and parent rule, you went home free and clear.

Those darn buses always seemed to roll up.

The hardest part of this is the different models on each run are having huge swings on where the moisture will start up out west, where the storm will dig in and follow the jet, if it will transfer to an apps runner or an east coast storm or will it cut through the lakes and give us rain for an extended period of time. There was a 400 mile difference in model runs yesterday that came out within an hour of each other.

One thing that is pretty certain now, after the storm goes through, it will turn very windy and cold. And the concensus is the wind will switch to the north west after the storm goes by and there goes the lake effect. And the lake effect with the amounts they say might happen with 50 mile per hour gust is a real problem-power outage, road closure problem.

We actually may have gotten a little break on Sunday if this starts off as rain and goes for 6 hours as rain. But we also then have to worry about the flash freeze that comes when the temp drops dramatically as the front comes by.

By Wednesday night snow totals from Chardon to Meadville could be in the 24-36 inches with 10-12 easily in Youngstown and 14 to 24 across the secondary snow belt from Portage, Geauga to mid Trumbull county.

I still think that by the time we are snuggled down watching the browns game on Sunday making cookies with the kids there will be a blizzard warning for parts of northeast Ohio and northwest Pa.

Yeah, the models have been all over the place with this system...literally. They just changed again with it digging further south. And, there are severe t-storm warnings in Kansas for WINDS. There is no thunder and lightening, just rain.

the more south they trend, the more the 32 degree line sinks south and the more snow we get. On the GFS last run, the storm also appears to wrap itself a little tighter than before.

I don't really know how to read all the maps yet (NAM, GFS, etc.), but I love it when people know what they're talking about!

I'm watching a weather forum...actually do for all big storms...and people are going crazy trying to figure this thing out.

I saw models tracking farther north and saying Michigan would be getting more Sunday, but that cold air will still bring lake-effect.

Should we worry about roof collapse issues? it sounds like it will be wet and heavy like April 07 Easter snowstorm.

Are you guys meteorologists, DawgMichelle and northlimadawg?

If we get 18 inches I'll be happy...I don't mind the snow--we have plows, shovels and snowblowers--as much as the power going out and the roof falling in.

This sounds like a storm that rivals the 3/13/93 blizzard, the 1/4/96 blizzard and the 11/11/96 veteran's day blizzard. 70 inches in chardon.

why so much variance on forecast models? you'd think that they'd use a similar baseline map.
