The Big Ten Conference looked to its history Monday in revealing a new logo, names for its football divisions and 18 new trophies for football.

The league announced it will call the divisions Legends and Leaders.

The Legends division will feature: Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern and Nebraska, which becomes a full Big Ten member on July 1, 2011.

The Leaders division will feature: Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Illinois and Indiana.

"Our foundation is our history and we wanted to honor it," commissioner Jim Delany said during the announcement on the Big Ten Network.

The Big Ten also unveiled a new logo that Delany said "represents a series of characteristics and values and has some historic importance." The league used Pentagram Design to create the new logo, which doesn't embed the number 12 like the previous logo did with the number 11.

The Big Ten will award the Stagg-Paterno Championship Trophy to the winner of the new Big Ten football title game, which begins in 2011. The trophy honors former University of Chicago coach Amos Alonzo Stagg and current Penn State coach Joe Paterno.

The MVP of the championship game will receive the Grange-Griffin Trophy, which honors former Illinois great Red Grange and former Ohio State star Archie Griffin, the only two-time winner of the Heisman Trophy.

Adam Rittenberg covers Big Ten football for ESPN.com. He can be reached at espnritt@gmail.com.

have they announced how they are going to schedule basketball games yet? Is it going to be 2 games against division and 1 against the cross-division? what about the big10 tourney (based on division or 1 big cluster)?

the divisions were obviously made solely for football (and for good reason), but Sparty doesn't even have a challenger in basketball in their division which is pretty sad.

Adam Rittenburg suggested the Stars and Stripes division and I thought that was a good idea. Or the black and blue division. Leaders and Legends? Dumb.

The trophies are good, however. I like seeing Paterno honored

My response is a three letter word which starts with a g and cannot be finished.

They split up OSU-Michigan. They split up Minny-Wisconsin. They split up Illinois-Northwestern. About the only two rivalries they left intact are Michigan-Mich St and the world beater Indiana-Purdue. They didn't even do this geographically. WTH was the thinking behind this?

Just awful.

Why not the "Schembechler" and "Hayes" divisions?

* If they really wanted to get creative and not do the traditional East/West or North/South.

There was no way that 3 of the 4 "Big Name" schools would wind up in one division. They almost had to split up OSU, Michigan, and Penn State.

While I don't think the division rosters are too bad considering the alternative (I think an east/west split would stack the east too much), those division names sound like a bad Pop Warner league.

Yikes.

The conference doesn't really follow east and west nor north and south. Just kinda jumbled up.

They didnt want to name it after people because it would kinda suck to be Michigan State and play in the Schembechler division and etc.

They didnt want to praise a team for a coach they had...they picked Leaders and Legend because it shows no bias

The NFL has Dallas in the NFC East, Baltimore in the AFC North, Miami in the AFC East and Indy in the AFC South and it works just fine.

North/South or East/West would have been just fine. Legends and Leaders??? Just freaking horrible.

I also find it mildly annoying that they insisted on double-naming each of the 18(!!) new awards with hyphens. My favorite? The Griese-Brees Quarterback of the Year. Sounds like the grand prize at a flatulence competition.

Congratulations on your Greasy Breeze award!

So the logo....They "hid" a one and a zero for the "Big Ten". A few questions:

1. The words already say BIG TEN!
2. Why try hiding 10...there are 12 teams.
3. The "I" is a 1....gotcha. Stupid, but subtle. So the "G" is a zero? Uhhh, you can't use a G to hid a zero when it was originally a G. Makes NO SENSE! Maybe the "G" is supposed to really be a 6, when they invite Rutgers, Mizzou, ND, and the Cuse in 2 years.

If I'm wrong about the zero, why bother putting in the "1" then?

And on top of all that, its SUPER plain looking.

Funny....I haven't read one article or post by a user on any site saying they liked this.

Why they didn't make one side the original 'Western Conference' due to the history of the league is beyond me

Original Western Conference: Purdue, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Chicago, and Northwestern.

UC obviously is gone, so that's 6 teams.

that leaves: Nebraska, Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan State, Iowa, and Indiana

and, as far as names:

'John Griffith Division'
'Bill Reed Division'

(the 2 longtime big10 commissioners who died while still holding the title)

The Big Division and The Ten Division would have been better than Legends and Leaders.

I still say North/South or East/West would have worked just fine despite the geographical make up.

Just think of the amount of time and money that was likely put into coming up with those names. Wonder how many meetings there were? I am about as uncreative as they come when it comes to things like naming something but I think I might have even been able to outdo that!

You have to look at the SEC model....I will bet you a box of donuts OSC and Michigan will play each other EVERY season.

The way the SEC works if you play each team in your division.....yep, those are some goofy division names....AND maintain one traditional rival from the other division....then you rotate on and off on a home and home basis the other teams in the opposite division.

As an example....in the SEC Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia are in the same division of the conference......Alabama, LSU, and Auburn.

Each year, Georgia plays Auburn, Tennesse and Alabama maintain their rivalry, and Florida and LSU lock horns on a yearly basis.

So now I will look back and make some guesses.

Natural rivals......it's hard with Neb.....

OSC......Mich

Mich St.....PSU

Iowa....Ind.

Minn.... Wis.

Neb.....Ill

NW....Purdue

.

It get's a bit tough.....but OSC, Mich is a lock as is Minn, Wisc.

What other "little brown jug games exist??"

Start naming those and you have your rivalries.

The hard part is Neb.....once you pair them, it kind of falls in to place.

Trust me my Big 10 friends....you feel pain for a year, but a few years down the road you will wonder why you were so far behind the times.

You'll like how it plays out.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

The Big Ten has already stated that OSU/Michigan will still remain an annual game in its traditional position on the schedule.

I know.....I was simply pointing out they aren't going to beak tradition as one poster thought....unless breaking up the heated OSU, NW game is going to upset some.

Even then, you will get them 2 out of every 4 years.

I agree, goofy names, but the Big 10 likes to be a little different.

Protest playoffs.

Demand Rose Bowl affiliation.

Have 11 teams and be call Big 10.

It fits.

Today my guys on The Fan, here in Columbus, were saying it sounded like a game played by losers in their mom's basements w/ multi-sided dice.

And back to the OSU/Michigan thing. I actually think they should break tradition a bit and make that matchup the last weekend in October. I only suggest that because it is good football weather and not in the same month as the title championshiop game. The way it is now, if OSU & Michigan were ever to compete for the title, they'd be playing in back to back weekends.

Of course so many consider this talk blasphemous. Heck, you suggest the game be changed to a night game and people act like the sky is falling . . .

I don't think that back to back weekends will happen too often, I'm not too worried.

I also think they split the balance of power pretty decently in both division. It won't turn into a Texas situation where they run that whole conference through one division.

Wisky and Penn State will continue to give OSU a run for their money.

And Iowa, Nebraska, Michigan and Michigan State will slug it out there.

The Logo looks like crap. And the names are kinda meh.

Wouldn't it make more sense for Indiana vs. Purdue and Iowa vs. MSU?
