Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, who spent time in prison for his involvement in dog fighting, said Tuesday having a dog as a pet would help in his rehabilitation.

In an interview with NBC News and TheGrio.com, Vick said, "I would love to get another dog in the future. I think it would be a big step for me in the rehabilitation process.

"I think just to have a pet in my household and to show people that I genuinely care, and my love and my passion for animals; I think it would be outstanding. If I ever have the opportunity again I will never take it for granted. I miss having a dog right now. I wish I could. My daughters miss having one, and that’s the hardest thing: telling them that we can’t have one because of my actions."

Vick has starred for the Eagles this season, with the team in first place heading into Sunday's NFC East showdown against the Giants at the Meadowlands.

"This entire situation has changed my life dramatically. Better player, better person," Vick said in the interview. "More patience, more persistence, and the willingness to, like I said earlier, set high goals and high standards not only on the football field but in life.

"And in so many ways I thank God for changing my life and keeping me healthy and putting me on the path to where I can redeem myself and make a great comeback."

I'm not sure about this .....

On one hand, I bet that his new dog would be taken care of like royalty, because he needs to show people that he's changed.

On the other hand, I find it hard to accept that he deserves the unconditional love that a dog offers. It's one of those "He had his chance ....."

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

I'm not sure if he's sincere or not and won't even try to judge him on that.

But one thing I wouldn't want done, is to risk a Pit Bull in his posession. I'd have to air on the side of caution on that one.

Now a beagle? Maybe, I don't know.... Still not sure about that but a Beagle won't fight to the death to please you. A Pit Bull will if it's trained to. If not they are fine animals. But he's done enough for one man to the breed imo to ever risk anymore.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

No dogs, or ANY pets, for this monster. Love how he plays the "kid" card.

NO, NO, NO! No dog for you!

I don't have a problem with it.. if he's smart he would make the personal decision to stay away from the traditional fighting breeds.. Doesn't mean he has to get a lap dog, he could get a retriever or a bigger dog if he wanted.

Personally I feel that he is only saying he wants a dog as a PR stunt. I mean, why would he want a dog if he obviously hates them enough to kill them?

I know people who participate in cockfighting that don't hate chickens . I don't what the thrill is about watching two birds fight to the death that makes it entertaining and dogs even less so . I will admit to being a fan of gladiatorial sports ( boxing, MMA etc.. ) however so maybe it is just semantics .

He tortured dogs. He should never be allowed to own an animal again. The end.

I disagree that he hates dogs, though I don't know for sure...... people who beat their kids don't do it out of hate, generally its more of a misguided love... and oddly enough a lot of abusive parents are allowed to have their kids back, but Vick is not allowed to get a dog? Seems rather odd to me.

And, just rationally speaking, I'm not sure why he would NEED a PR stunt at this point.. based on where he was and what he did, he could NEVER have predicted his life would be as great as it is right now, this soon.. why would he need a PR stunt? what does he have to prove? what does he have to gain?

He didn't just "beat" dogs....he killed them. Big difference. If someone murdered a child, do you think that they should be allowed to adopt one?

Michael Vick has no love for dogs, obviously. If you love dogs, you don't allow them to fight to their death.

Why do you guys make excuses for him? It's not like he got frustrated once and hit his dog....he TORTURED them to death. ON PURPOSE.

I certainly hope they wouldn't give children back to parents that tortured them, just as I hope they never let this ass own another animal.

Why doesn't he deserve a second chance? He seems to be more humble and mellow ever since he got himself into that mess. I'd be in favor of having someone coming in to check in on the well being of the dog for the first year or so of ownership just to put everyone at ease.

We all make mistakes as humans. People can change.

Uh, he IS getting a second chance. He still plays in the NFL.

He doesn't, however, deserve a second chance with a dog.

No.. but then in my mind, children are children and dogs are not children. I'm not saying dogs deserve to be tortured and killed but they are not children.

My guess is he's still feeling guilty and is uncomfortable with the quiet and the vocal judging of him. He wants another dog (I'm guessing) so he can show people that he really has changed his views about what's OK and what's not, that he's not (anymore) a cold abuser, so he has some tangible and visible "proof" that he's changed.

I'm not talking about whether it's right or wrong, deserved or not, just what this sort of expressed sentiment makes me think he may be thinking. That being said, I get the feeling that this won't give him the personal finality/closure of the issue that he is thinking it could. More than likely it is something that will follow him through the rest of his life, as things that we've done and seriously regret tend to do.

I see it that way too. A human is a far, far, far, faaaaaaaar jump from a dog. The first comment isn't a fair comparison. I don't care how many people tell me dogs are family members the same as their kids....they're not human. They are animals. Comparing the death of a child and a dog is awful. Sorry if that irks some people, they aren't even CLOSE.

Of course, I'm not advocating violence towards dogs. I grew up with a family dog in the house. And I owned two dogs while in college. I'd probably have a dog now if we didn't live in the city (pain in the butt to take them outside with an elevator and dog park 3 block away).

Anyway, if Vick wants a dog....and he's going to get a Shitzu, sure. Heck, maybe he wants to get a pitbull so he can redeam himself toward that breed. I don't know if he's TRULY a changed man, but it appears he's trying. That's good enough for me. Though, I thought he wasn't allowed to get a dog for a while anyway.

I don't see how this would be a PR stunt either. Vick is already leading the Pro Bowl voting, is probably #2 is MVP voting, and seems to have changed a lot of peoples mind about him with some of the community service stuff he's done (speaking out against dog fighting). In my eyes, he's trying to be a better person.

This topic always seems to get a good argument going. Some people see dogs as people, some don't.

One more time...

I would not give a dog killer a dog any more than I would give a child killer a child.

Michael Vick does not deserve to have a dog.

Is there some reason why you think he DOES deserve to have one?

What, would his life not be complete if he doesn't get one? Boo hoo.

Is Vick not a free agent after this season? In which case you can bet he's concerned with his public image in potential new homes for himself. He's rehabilitating his image, not his failings. Big dif, imo.

Look, for me, this isn't about equating dogs and children. This is about a man that tortured and killed dogs. Why anyone wants to let him have another dog is beyond me.

What if he isn't rehabilitated? Oh, that's right..."it's just a dog".

Again, if he wants to get a dog to redeam himself towards the breed/species, then I don't see any major issue with it. Sure, it would make me a tiny bit nervous if I was the guy at the pound signing the dog over to him, but again, he seems like a changed man (stress the words "seems").

If he saves a dog from death at the pound, takes it home, shows it respect, takes care of it, and doesn't enter the dog into a fight.....what's the problem?

I don't see where his past actions make it impossible for him to be a dog owner again. Sure, it could be something that triggers his old ways....but he'd be risking more time in prison and never being able to play in the NFL again. I don't see him making that same mistake again.

And as odd as it sounds, I've heard that dog fighting people actually like their dogs. Sure, that seems strange to put the dog you like into a situation where they could get hurt or killed. But people tell me it's the way it is, however strange it sounds.

Maybe the issue here is how you view Mike Vick. Do you see him as a changed person? Do you see him as rehabilited? Do you view him as the Pro Bowl vote leading, MVP candidate, and guy that has spent lots of time trying to speak out against dog fighting.....or the same guy that killed and fought dogs?

If Michael Vick tortured and killed children he would probably have been executed in the state of Virginia or he would spend every last day of his life in prison.. more proof that the courts and rational people do not view children and dogs the same...

He did his time, yes he should be allowed to own a dog.

Let me ask you a question, do you honestly think if he gets a family pet dog for himself and his daughters that there is a chance he is going to torture and kill the dog or are you just punishing him because of what he did before?

He doesn't need to have playful photo ops with a dog in a park to get a contract next season. He got a contract coming out of prison when nobody knew how he'd react or play. So far, he's been a model citizen and a fantastic QB (better than before his trouble). Again, he's the leading vote getter for the Pro Bowl. I'd say his public image is quite high right now.

On the Mike and Mike show they were talking about how he's become a fan favorite in Philly. Sure, most of that has to do with his winning....but the town is backing him. Time heals all wounds.....but winning makes that process a whole lot faster.

I think he's going to be completely fine next season, contractually, with or without a dog.

Sure, there's a chance he would do it again. What mental illness made him do it in the first place? Has that been treated or did time in prison "cure" him of his disease? He may talk a big show, but why dangle the carrot in front of the horse -- which could be at the expense of yet another dog?

And, yes, if not allowing him to own another dog is "punishment" then I am still punishing him. Personally, I think it only right that he be banned from dog ownership for life. He will live without another dog, but will another dog live with him? Not a risk I'm willing to take.

I'm sure Vick will do fine with his next contract too, but he will face PR challenges anywhere other than Philly. Look at the split right here on the message board. Speaking just for myself, the day Vick was to put on an orange helmet would be the day I stop following the Browns.

Again, he's the leading vote getter for the Pro Bowl....at every position. That's something everyone across the country is voting on. And it's average Joe's and Jane's like you and me. Meaning, that's a lot of people that are ok with him playing right now, not just in Philly.

There will always be people in every city that won't forgive him. That goes without saying.

And I'd be surprised a fan of the Browns would stop rooting for them if Vick signed here....especially if he played at the same level as this year.

At least some in our society believe in redemption

Quote:

It has been widely assumed that Eagles quarterback Mike Vick may never again own a dog as part of the sentence imposed on him after he pleaded guilty to federal charges relating to dogfighting and gambling.

The perception has been fueled in part by the comments from Vick himself, who seems to believe that he needs special permission from the judge who sent him to prison in order to ever purchase or own a dog.

“I don’t know when that day is going to come,” Vick said last year. “It’s up to my judge at his discretion.”

More recently, Vick said that he “would love to have another dog in the future,” and that “if I ever have that opportunity again, I won’t take it for granted.”

As it turns out, he will have that opportunity again.

We tracked down (thanks to a reader who also is a lawyer) a copy of Vick’s sentencing order from December 10, 2007. And while the document states that “[t]he defendant shall not engage in the purchase, possession, or sale of any canine,” that limitation appears as a condition of Vick’s supervised release, otherwise known as probation.

Vick was placed on three years of “supervised release,” which began to run after he was released from prison. Thus, at some point in 2012, he’ll no longer be on supervised release — and he’ll be able to buy, own, and/or sell dogs.

Stallworth was negligent, not malicious. There's no equivalence. Vick willfully tortured and killed these dogs. Its not a mistake that Vick made. A mistake is when you go too fast on slick roads and rear-end the car in front of you, not when you hang, drown, or electrocute animals for not wanting to fight ... and not when you have unprotected sex with women while knowing you have genital herpes, for that matter. His remorse is manufactured for the public's consumption only, because sociopaths do not feel true remorse - only regrets for being caught. I could not root for him or his team under any circumstances.

Why? People drop off pets and leave them to the woods all the time but there isn't a zealous campaign against them. People drop off pets to the pound which is basically a death sentence no zealots there either.

He paid his debt to society as deemed by our legal system. If you think the laws were too forgiving lead a campaign to get them changed. However you cannot continue to punish a man for a crime that he has already paid for. Get over it.

I HATE this argument. Stallworth was ridiculous callous in his approach to drinking and driving and it resulted in ending a man's life. He has since been extremely forthright and sincere in his apologies (I don't remember ever seeing an athlete as obviously messed up from any of their offenses). It seems Stallworth has truly learned and grown from his horrible, terrible mistake.

Vick lied to the owner of his team, lied to the NFL, continued to lie until he was put into a corner and things were proven. He ran an inter-state gambling ring. He fought dogs, tortured them and killed them. Continuously. Over and over again. For years. He paid other people to do it for him while he was busy playing football.

Yet people try to make Stallworth off as a worse person???
