Cleveland Browns name Colt McCoy starting quarterback for remainder of season BEREA -- Browns coach Eric Mangini stepped out of character on Thursday and named Colt McCoy his starting quarterback. Not just for Sunday's game in Cincinnati. For the remainder of the season. "I felt like he's earned this opportunity and I want to give it to him," Mangini said. "I want to see how he continues to grow. This is by no stretch just trhowing a young guy in for the sake of throwing a young guy in. If I didn't think he could go out and lead us and be successful doing that, then I wouldn't make this decision. But I do feel that way and I feel strongly about it." Mangini said the decision was his and he informed President Mike Holmgren after he arrived at it. McCoy hasn't played since suffering a high left ankle sprain in Jacksonville on Nov. 21. Mangini said McCoy was "excited, but also determined" upon hearing the news. At the same time, veteran Jake Delhomme handled his demotion well, Mangini said. "He couldn't have been more supportive, not only of Colt but of the whole team," Mangini said. "Colt is incredibly lucky to have someone like him in the building at this point of his career. You can't ask for a better player, a better person." Mangini said he has not determined whether Delhomme or Seneca Wallace would serve as the No. 2 quarterback Sunday in Cincinnati. It's likely that role would go to Wallace because he would have to be No. 2 to contribute in some Wildcat packages. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2010/12/cleveland_browns_name_colt_mcc.htmlBTTB

Best news I've heard all day. Makes me excited to watch the Browns again. With Delhomme in there it was hard to watch, made me nervous every time he dropped back.

Yeah, that sums it up for me...............
I hope Colt is ready to play though, otherwise Seneca Wallace has to play this week. Don't see how our coaching staff can continue to go with Delhomme

Not a big surprise. Mangini has pretty much said that McCoy will be back under Center when ready. (If you read between the lines)
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Exactly. At 5-8, I just want to watch these next 3 games to see some improvement. With Delhomme under center, it made it almost painful to watch.
I'm actually excited for the game Sunday, now.

Outstanding news.. not a huge surprise, but outstanding news..
Jake is a good guy that seems to know where he is in his career.. so with that,, all hail Jake...
Seneca Wallace.. Hell I just don't know what to think, but of the two, I'll take Colt.

I noticed when Jake came in all of a sudden we threw down field a bit more to Robo and Momass. I hope Colt can incorporate these two into the games more. It seemed like he was afraid to throw to them previously.

Ya, he stuck with mostly Watson, Hillis and Stuckey but as he gets more comfortable back there he should open up to who he throws to. This 3 game break he had could turn out to be a good thing. He learned a lot in his 5 games and then got a chance to step back and review what he did. Watch Jake, learning what NOT to do and now he can apply everything and hopefully be a better QB. Not saying playing the last half of the season would have been bad, but there can be some good out of his injury.
Gonna be exciting to see how he finishes the season, gets to face the 3 division teams he will hopefully see plenty of in the coming years.

Hopefully we can see if Colt does well in Cleveland weather in late December and doesn't develop a Mark Sanchez problem with the cold.

Damn, I'm going to be on a cruise in the Atlantic Ocean while he's playing. I won't be able to watch. Good for Colt though! Go Browns!

I think there is a difference from being from Southern California and Texas.
I live in Southern California and it's rare if it drops below 40°. I went to the Grand Canyon for Christmas one year and it was 20-something° and I almost died.
I'm more interested in seeing how McCoy throws in the wind, rain, and snow.

Yes, that is going to be really important. If you can't be successful in the cold. You are gonna have a tough time being successful in the AFC North.

If he was healthy against buffalo, i think it would of been a totally different game with him in there. On another note i came up with a poem when delhomme was our staring qb.. Roses are red, Violets are blue, When its 3rd and 8 Jake throws for 2..

Great news!
I wonder who the #2 QB is going to be? God forbid McCoy gets hurt, Mangini wouldn't go back to Delhomme would he?

Very happy about this.. not just because it gives Colt more opportunity to grow, but I really believe Colt gives us the best chance to win now. He may not incorporate our WRs as much as Jake, but he's shown that he's a smart player that doesn't turn the ball over and doesn't put us in a lot of negative plays, and I know that's a big win in Mangini's mind (mine too).
Hoping Colt can pick up where he left off.

He better prove himself beyond any shadow of a doubt or else we should be on an all out KTMF type blitz to draft Andrew Luck this year. I don't care about trading away "valuable picks". We're never going to win without a legit Franchise QB.

Gee maybe we should have done that for JaMarcus Russell. My point is there are no guarantees. But if MH thinks we need a QB I would not be upset.

At the same time, veteran Jake Delhomme handled his demotion well, Mangini said.
"He couldn't have been more supportive, not only of Colt but of the whole team," Mangini said. "Colt is incredibly lucky to have someone like him in the building at this point of his career. You can't ask for a better player, a better person."
Say what you want about the guy as a quarterback, he's a team player. I've seen him take one for the team more than once this year. He gets it, even if he hasn't got it anymore. You won't catch me kicking him now that he's down.

Ditto.
And especially the "....kicking him when he's down" comment.
While he hasn't been the player we all hoped for, he's been a true pro's pro when it comes to the team, and especially when it comes to helping Colt.

Every report has said that he has been like another coach for McCoy ... and that is impressive to me. It's easy to say "Yeah, but he's getting a lot of money ....." but regardless, each and every player in the NFL wants to think that they are the best at their position, and especially on their own team. Look at how Breet Favre famously reacted to the idea that he might help mentor a young QB ......
Delhomme doesn't have the physical ability to be a starter any longer, but he's got the mental makeup and character that will make him a strong mentor to McCoy.

I'm not sure he's got any interest,, but Jake reminds me of the kinda player that will make a good coach someday..

j/c What! You mean he's not sticking with JD!?? You mean he's actually trying to see what Colts' got looking forward and named him the starter..................on thursday? What a bafoon!
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Could be ...... but it seems to me that Delhomme is helping McCoy with all of the "other" stuff a starting QB in the NFL deals with beyond just the playbook.

Ye of little faith..... We may still draft a QB in the draft. There are some interesting 'projects' beyond Luck, but will save that for the proper thread/forum
I like how Mangini gave respect to Delhomme for excepting his roll and his professionalism and enthusiasm towards mentoring Colt.
Dogma aside, I think that Jake is a pretty darn good man imb.

It's a good day to be a Browns fan. With the results on the field over the last decade very, very spotty at best, hope is all we've had to hang out hats on. This move by Mangini puts hope on the front burner. Now it's up to Colt to produce an effective offense and victories. Bring it, Colt.

While that is true ....to emphasize your point....there have been several players in the past that made "lots of money" that didn't do much top help those that were going to replace them....At QB...one that comes to mind is Jeff George. Heck we have had stories here in Cleveland of DB's that were purposely misleading the rookies behind them that delayed their development. So Money or not...It still shows the character of Jake Delhomme and I, for one, am glad we signed him. Hopefully, he turns out to be the Gary Danielson to our next Kosar. Only Time will tell.

Uh ... why?
The article said the same thing. Is there some sort of new rule I haven't heard about? The six string linebacker can come in and run Wildcat packages ... why does he have to be the #2 to do that?

#3 QB is an emergency QB only. He can only play if both #1 and #2 get hurt.
If I'm not mistaken, once the #3 QB comes in, #1 or #2 can't return to the game.

The rule states that if a third quarterback is inserted before the fourth quarter, a team's first two quarterbacks cannot be used in the game at any position.
Another aspect of the rule is sometimes misunderstood. It is a coach's decision as to whether a third quarterback will be used.
The active quarterbacks do not have to be injured for a team to use its third quarterback.

Yes. The 3rd QB can enter the game in the 4th quarter, and the first two QB's remain eligible to play.
But if we make Seneca the 3rd QB, and decide to run him in a Wildcat package in say the 2nd quarter, then Colt and Delhomme are not allowed to re-enter the game.
The 3rd QB does not count towards the 45 man game day roster.
