Hopefully he continues to develop. I would love to be proven wrong about him.

Brian Robiskie developing with Browns
Published: Friday, December 24, 2010, 7:55 PM Updated: Friday, December 24, 2010, 8:00 PM
By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer

Berea -- Former Browns offensive coordinator and current Atlanta Falcons receivers coach Terry Robiskie was preparing for his 4 p.m. kickoff against the Seahawks last week when the locker room attendant rushed over and said, "Your son just made a heck of a catch for a 46-yard touchdown!"

Robiskie, who's helped coach his son Brian from pee wee-ball to his days at Chagrin Falls High, Ohio State and now with the Browns, couldn't help but get choked up.

"As I stood there in the doorway, my heart and my eyes got full," said the elder Robiskie. "I was just so happy for him and how far he's come. I know all of the work he's put into this and the time spent on the job. We often tell our players, 'You get what you earn.' He's starting to get what he's earned, and I couldn't possibly be prouder of him."

Before his own game against the Seahawks began, Terry Robiskie fired off a quick text message to his son, which Brian was surprised to see right after the Browns' 19-17 loss to the Bengals. Later that night, when Terry finally got a chance to talk to him, he did what only a great NFL receivers coach would do: He scolded his son for holding the ball out precariously the last 5 yards of his TD -- the first of his NFL career.

"He said: 'No. Don't do it,' " said Brian Robiskie. "Then he said, 'Good catch.' "

But Robiskie couldn't have been happier for his son, who's coming on strong down the stretch after spending two games on the inactive list earlier this season -- including the first meeting against the Ravens in Week 3.

After catching only two of nine passes thrown his way in the first two games, Robiskie earned a trip to the bench for the next two outings against Baltimore and Cincinnati. But instead of complaining or questioning the coaches, Robiskie did what his dad taught him to do since he was a youngster: work hard, maintain a great attitude and prove yourself on the field.

"I've sat and watched Brian all year and watched him work," said Terry Robiskie. "I think the thing that keeps me smiling each week are those times when I watch him get knocked down, get up and keep right on going. In the Cincinnati game, he got knocked down right before the half with about 16 seconds left -- there was a flag [on Roy Williams for a personal foul that was offset]. I thought for a minute he might be down for the count. But he was right back on his feet and managed to catch the touchdown to bring his team within two late in the game.

That makes a dad smile. I just kept saying to him over and over and over, 'Just keep working.' "

The touchdown catch was Robiskie's 16th catch over the past four games -- the most by a Browns wideout during that span. Overall, he caught five passes against the Bengals for 82 yards, his career high and the most by a Browns receiver this season. The surge has followed a season full of questioning by fans and media if Robiskie -- the Browns' second of three second-rounders last season -- has what it takes.

"I don't really think the light's been off, I think it's just had a chance to shine a little bit brighter," said Browns coach Eric Mangini. "It's hard to predict when it's going to start clicking for a guy. You've got to keep working, and that little bit [of improvement] is enough to help you get open. Once it starts hitting, those chances tend to increase."

Robiskie's breakout game came in Week 11 against Carolina when he caught seven passes from Jake Delhomme for 50 yards. He caught two over the next two weeks and then stood out again in Cincinnati, catching the five for 82 and the long TD at the end from Colt McCoy.

"I don't think there's been any difference," said Brian Robiskie. "When you've got passes that go in [for you], there are chances to catch the ball. Colt's doing a great job, and the line's doing a great job protecting. If everybody works together, the receivers get the ball."

In Robiskie's first six games back after being inactive for two weeks, he rarely had the ball thrown his way and caught only seven passes for a season total of nine. What's more, he was completely shut out in back-to-back losses to the Jets and Jaguars.

During that time, Mangini and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll continued to say Robiskie needed to get off the line of scrimmage faster and do a better job of getting open. Robiskie kept working at it, and improved so much that his dad has been using him as an example in his own film room.

"This year has been outstanding for me because we've played a lot of the same teams," said Terry Robiskie. "Not only do I get to watch him, I get to show his tape to my guys and say,

'See, this is what I keep telling you to do.' "

Brian Robiskie has made a dramatic turnaround from the two first games where he caught 2-of-9. Over the past four outings, he's caught 16 of the 18 passes thrown to him for 89 percent.

Over the same span, Mohamed Massaquoi -- who gets lower-percentage deep balls -- has caught 12 of 23 passes thrown his way for 52.1 percent.

"That's my goal is to make the most of balls that come my way," said Robiskie.

At first, it seemed like perhaps Robiskie was dusted off by Delhomme and that the other quarterbacks might not have the same chemistry with him. But last week's game in Cincinnati disproved that theory. McCoy threw to him early and often, including a 17-yarder over the middle after McCoy rolled to his right and threw across his body.

"Robo has played great," said McCoy. "Especially last week, he made some clutch plays.

We had a couple times we had the sight adjust, and he was able to see it and run the right route. That was one of our third downs we converted [a 9-yard catch in the first quarter]. He practices hard. That's one thing about the guys in this locker room. If I can say anything, we practice hard."

Mangini often likens Robiskie's slow start in the league to that of Bills receiver Stevie Johnson and Jaguars receiver Mike Sims-Walker. Johnson caught a total of 12 passes and two TDs his first two seasons. He now has 72 catches for 943 yards and 10 TDs. Sims-Walker missed his first season with a knee injury and then caught 16 passes in 2008. This year, he's got 42 catches for 531 yards and seven TDs. Robiskie caught seven passes as a rookie last year and has 25 for 240 yards this year.

"I never want to look at a guy in another situation and try to directly compare him to myself because his situation is different," said Robiskie. "Like coach said, 'It's a matter of making the most of your opportunities.' If I have an opportunity, I have to try to capitalize on it."

Brian's development has been one of Terry's most cherished gifts this season.

"It's been a great joy for me to sit and watch my son do all of this at a position I know so well," said Terry. "To see him run a route and get open, to make a good catch, to get a good block, to cut-block a defender -- it's just been outstanding."

One thing I've noticed about the Steelers is that most of the time they give their first and second rounders a few years to develop. Does anyone remember that Mendenhall had been a bit of a disappointment early on? I've watched him a ton this year...he's easily one of the best 5 RBs in football now. They actually develop their players.

We probably need to do more of that here.

From what I remember, He had a big fumbling issue but he kept hitting the holes hard.

Anyhow, I hope Robo continues to develop and impress.

He had a few fumbles in preseason his rookie year, but 4 games in the season he fractured his shoulder on a hit by Ray Lewis. I don't quite think that qualifies as being a disappointment early on.

Can't develop much if you are not on the field, have a QB who can find you & hit the pass, and an OC that has something like a vertical attack that is not limited to a route error. Separation is good on the field as is looking for the ball. I wish him further success and further improvement in these areas for ALL our wideouts.

Things like this upset me. I'm glad I don't pay for a PD subscription.

Not only does the writer get it wrong...they don't even bother to fact check it?

I thought in in year 2 he was considered decent but maybe not worthy of where he was drafted. Maybe he came on strong late after a slow start to the season?

I think I recall Timmons and Woodley starting slow as well but now both are pretty good players.

I don't know. Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me.

But I guess my point is maybe it's too early to give up on Robiskie.

Its great to get some production out of the WR corps. If Robo can put up respectable numbers against the following defenses then it says a lot. Im glad hes starting to show up on the stat sheet but not ready to say hes a finished product (as im sure neither is anyone else).

LMAO@ Robo... If I were Roddy White, and he showed me clips of Robiskie, I would chuckle..

Im in Robiske corner, I like his hands and when given a chance has done pretty well, will never be the deep threat we need, but will complement the 10 - 15 yard routes we will need to move the ball. Going into next year his third we will see if he can be the reciever we want him to be. Like the fact he has a great set of hands, we havent seen that here in quiet a while.

glad theres some positive pub for him. Coming fromTerry Robo though...im not that excited....he was an awful coach while here.

but...its good to see him coming along...what hes done the last few weeks is much better than that garbage effort we saw early in th year...maybe it was a combo of nerves and frustration and a little bi of the game being too big for him.

it seems as though maybe the game is slowing down for him now...and if he can build upon it...maybe we'll have one less major need going into april.

if they can develop...MoMass, Robiskie, Cribbs, Stuckey, and Mitchell could be 5 guys worthhaving on a roster of a good team. Now if we could get a change of pace back, a better RT (im fine with Yates at RG), and some D we could have a very good team

I was surprised when that call went our way. I guess we were due to win a challenge since it seems like Mangini lost them 80% of the time.

I am glad to see him starting to produce. It seemed almost impossible we whiffed as badly as it looked considering he had a nice college career, playing at a top school in a top conference.

Ballpeen is right again as usual. I have pulled for Robo, but he wasn't getting much love from the system. He is not our number 1, which we need desperately. But his game is much better in spite of a nasty excuse for an offense under Daboll. It could limit anyone in it. But we may have a tall possession receiver with some deep ability if we can use him right. Not going to die of windburn, but CAN score. Just need a brighter offense to work up his ability set. NOT the bust I thought; not the best in NFL. But Colt ought to find him regularly, I hope. Keep working!

Maybe the refs were afraid of another bottlegate..after all it was only reviewed after Balt went offsides intentionally to allow for the review.. <-- That rule needs to be changed... If a defensive penalty disrupt the next play from being played, it should count as an entire play making it impossible for the previous play to be challenged by the defensive team.

It was the typical "no evidene either way" call...so the live call stands...no problem there...we got lucky on a 50-50 call once

Robo otoh...he has next season left to show something...I don't have much hop eleft for him because if a WR by year 3 doesn't put up a 60 catch, 800yds season MINIMUM as a Top 50 selection, he's a bust....

If you go back to the 09 draft, look at all the picks between 33 and 52 (our last of 3 2nd round picks)...if you'd make a poll to pick the 5 worst picks from those at least 2 Browns would show up with Massa a sure fire "close miss"...a guy like Nicks just went 6 or 7 picks before Robo....why not trade 1 of those other 2nds to get him? I know I'd rather have Nicks than Robo and Massa....and before anyone brings up the "hindsight" argument...that's what I did in my mock, it's just a mock but 31 other people were involved, so I didn't make it up myself....I got back into the 1st because I saw a huge "tier gap" between Nicks and hacks like Robo, Massa and Iglesias...."Genius" obviously didn't and went with his "quantity over quality" philosophy....thankfully he's gone

Remember when Robiskie was in the draft they said he was the most NFL ready receiver in the draft.

Suuuuuure you did.

And even if you did, I don't thing an imaginary dream world really has much application in the real world.

When they were drafted, Robiskie was hailed by most to be a solid pick, whereas Mass was considered a reach.

Oh boy, its the mock draft argument again ? Really ? Why dont you tell us what you did on Madden also. Let me just say this straight out. Your mock draft means nothing, zero, zilch. And no one is impressed or cares.
Ever stop to think having an Eli Manning to throw passes might make a difference in between who we took and who the Giants took ?

1. I have this mock draft up and running every year...it's a month long mock leading up to the draft..the other 31 GMs are mostly diehards of their teams...I could post the whole mock in a second if you need further proof

this was last year's mock btw (pre-S.Brown/Gocong trade):

Pick #7: Cleveland Browns - Joe Haden, CB, Florida
Pick #38: Cleveland Browns - Nate Allen, FS, South Florida
Pick #62: Cleveland Browns - Dexter McCluster, WR, Ole Miss (trade up)
Pick #85: Cleveland Browns - Mike Johnson, OG/RT, Alabama
Pick #92: Cleveland Browns - Eric Norwood, OLB, South Carolina
Pick #129: Cleveland Browns - T.J. Ward, S, Oregon (trade up)
Pick #137: Cleveland Browns - Tony Moeaki, TE, Iowa
Pick #146: Cleveland Browns - Daniel Te´o-Nesheim, LB, Washington
Pick #160: Cleveland Browns - Dezmon Briscoe, WR, Kansas
Pick #161: Cleveland Browns - Clifton Geathers, DE, South Carolina
Pick #177: Cleveland Browns - Sean Canfield, QB, Oregon State, Browns
Pick #238: Cleveland Browns - Joique Bell, RB, Wayne State

2. While it ws a mock, a "dream"...I had my tiers and rankings ready and moved the many picks I had accordingly...Mangini was content to stay put and was happy with quantity...that's a sign of not knowing who's really good since going with quantity increases the probability to "hit" on a pick...instead of just going for the real talent...but then again, you gotta know talent...and Mangini just doesn't, there's ample proof for that by now...he drafted like he coached...."not to lose" style

Start reading after "dream".

Django, the anti-Mangini rhetoric on repeat was tired BEFORE he was fired.

So you talked about the 2010 draft in point one, and then railed on the '09 draft in point 2 (honest question)?

If that's the case, then I apologize. My over-the-internet mind reading isn't up to snuff for some posters on this forum.

You talk about your Mock, and then talk about Mangini's horrible drafts in the same breathe, at no point did you seperate the two things. regardless how many numbers there are...

And we're the ones that can't read...

I was responding to CanadaDawg, who questioned this mock thing...both answers tackle the 09 draft...the 10 mock was just a "btw", a quick proof that I do those annually

Have to aplogize for not being perfectly clear and going all a$% on you guys, sorry for that

Back to Robo though....best case for him at this point is a below AVG dime a dozen #2 WR, a complementary WR...and that's best case....more probable is a last year starting in 2011 and then 2-4 more years of backup #4 duty somewhere else before fading out of the league and becoming a running gag around the forums

Damn - give it up dude. You hate mangini. You hate his picks, his wife, his food choice, his kids - you hate him. Okay - we get it.

Get off it. You USED to post football things that were interesting. Anymore? Your posts are pathetic. Really.

It gets old.

Here's a news flash: Mangini is not the coach anymore.

Here's another "waiting" to be news flash: Who do you want as a head coach?

I asked you before, but you never replied, just went on with Mangini bashing. So put it out their for us, oh master of hatred - who do you want as head coach??????????

Yeah, you should have started point number 2 with a paragraph stating that you are now shifting the subject and advise readers to be cautious that they don't mix the point number 1 with point number 2.

Dude, half these guys are just knee-jerk jumping to conclusions no matter what you post. I said it weeks ago and am saying it again... too many do not even read what you post, they've already got their minds made up they're against it.

You're the villain who didn't like the coach. Now he's fired and it's all your fault!

But he did Arch, you just missed it. I remember Fisher and Nolan I'm pretty sure.

That could be.

Doesn't change the fact that I'm sick of hearing, even now, how "inept" Mangini was. The guy is gone, why harp on it incessantly?

So he starts point 2 out by talking about the mock, and I'm supposed to know whatever comes directly after that pertaining to drafting has nothing to do with that mock...

Ok...

Obviously that's my mistake...

But anywhoo...

I love on Mike and Mike this mourning, John Clayton was on talking about HC searches, they got to Cleveland and Clayton in his infamous wisdom went off like "Cleveland's interviewing Perry Fewell tuesday...they haven't schedualed an interview with John Fox...yet"

John Clayton has said basically Fox would be our HC. And now he's sitting there wiggling in his seat hoping he was right...

Sometimes I wonder what reporters get paid for, reporter? no...

Robo looked like he might be starting to come around...

I'm really hoping he takes another leap forward with his game next year. I highly doubt a new coach hangs onto him if he plateaus like people think he will.

Also, our WR stable is about to get way more crowded. With at least one high draft pick being used on the position and Mitchell hopefully getting a fair shot at seeing the field, there are definitely going to be some casualties coming out of training camp next year. I, for one, would be dissappointed if we got rid of Stuckey and kept Robo. I see Stuckey as a better possession/run-and-catch receiver than Robo. Just my opinion, though...

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

I think they get paid to say things. So that's what they do. Say things.

Stuckey is a better YAC receiver than Robiskie, a lot of it because he's quicker.

We'll keep 'em both, I imagine.
