As the end of 2010 nears we can expect the "best of" lists. Along those lines here is a short list of the movies I never get tired of ....
2001: A Space Odyssey - among other things it's a great testament to mankind's ego. A fantastic use of sight and sound that was available in 1968. Imo Kubrick could always tell a story as good as or better than the author. Just me in the living room with the plasma and home theater. Good stuff.
Cool Hand Luke - "Sometimes nothing could be a real cool hand". Is that the Brownies theme (one I pray we turn around)? This one's tied to my father and I as we watched this every time it was on TV. It's my favorite Newman movie. From "shakin the bush here boss" to the car wash scene - "Hey Lord, whatever I've done, don't strike me blind here for a couple of minutes". Pure gold.
The African Queen - Chick and dude flick. Missionary saves the drunkard, woman changes man and then they bomb the Germans. Besides, I love Kathrine Hepburn. My favorite John Huston film.
Any Eastwood spaghetti western - I suppose The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is at the top for me, but any will do.
Again with the quotes: "When you hang a man, you better look at him"
and prolly my favorite from Outlaw Jose Wales:
"I didn't surrender, but they took my horse and made him surrender. They have him pulling a wagon up in Kansas I bet." (Chief Dan George as Lone Watie describing to Jose that he didn't surrender to the Union, his horse did - I still laugh. ).
Little Big Man - Speaking of Chief Dan George .... what a great movie and another that it seems that my dad and I have watched endless times. Jack Crabb, the Walter Mitty of the West and the father of Forrest Gump, so to speak.
I have a week off from work .... wanna guess what I'll be doing?
Wayne's World Back To The Future Happy Gilmore Billy Madison any (original) Star Wars Raiders of the Lost Ark Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade Blue Streak The Big Lebowski
Here's a list of those that I'll watch every time they're on. It's a rare occasion when "Enemies at the Gate" is shown on TV, but I have the DVD. "Cool Hand Luke" for sure.
"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"
"The Goodfellas"
"Jerimiah Johnson"
"Enemies at the Gate"
"The Holy Grail"
"Deliverance"
Any Cheech and Chong movie (except "The Corsican Brothers").
And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul. - John Muir
Airplane Amazon Women on the Moon Raiders of the Lost Ark Anything by Monty Python Animal House Groundhog Day Watchmen Big Serenity
I dunno ..... there's a few ....
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.
The Great Race O Brother, Where Art Thou? The Matrix (the first movie) The Longest Day A Christmas Carol (the one with George C. Scott as Scrooge) The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming The Jason Bourne movies (all of them)
There are probably others, but these are the ones that come to mind immediately.

Same as many others here, but I can't believe no one has mentioned the Godfather and the Godfather II.
The scene when Michael is trying to call Luca Brasi, and then the fish comes in. He just turns and calmly hangs up the phone like "well, no use trying to call him."
Cool Hand Luke and Jerimiah Johnson have been responsible for me to miss many oppurtunities to get work done over the years . No matter what time of day they are on I HAVE to watch them both to completion .

Sorry, I was thinking too much and should have had that posted earlier,...

Understood.
My movies of the family collection are only those that I can watch repeatedly. Just a few already mentioned that I'd add to that list:
Reservoir Dogs - I think I heard that Tarantino did that on something like a $50,000 budget. My wife also loves his films (with one exeception -->) and I once rented from "From Dusk Till Dawn" knowing that it was some type of vampire movie. Ms. Maddog doesn't care for sci-fi at all and when the first character transforms (the dancer, I think) my wife says, "Oh yeah, that could happen". I could not stop laughing. Needless to say she grabbed her book and didn't watch another scene.
The Usual Suspects - This came out at about the time of Pulp Fiction I think. Good story telling.
Anything Robert DeNiro - the mafia related are my favorites. I don't have all of his in my collection, but definitely Goodfellas, The Godfather Trilogy and The Deer Hunter. I first tried Rolling Rock because of Deer Hunter. I think it's use in the movie was less brand placement and more just being authentic to the characters' home state of Pennsylvania. Nice smooth American beer and great movie.
I don't know how I left Monty Python, Animal House and Airplane off my list. Airplane is simply a classic and a joke / quote a minute .... ".... a hospital? ... what is it? ..." The family just shakes their head at me as I quote The Holy Grail while watching.
War movie - Apocalypse Now - Full Metal Jacket comes in a close second for me and the close of Saving Private Ryan can make me well up just thinking about it. Apocalypse Now is an experience. Heck, I've even played several FPS maps dedicated to Coppola's movie, particularly Duvall's "Charlie Don't Surf" scene.
Finally, maybe my favorite Pacino film (well, other than the Godtathers) - Dog Day Afternoon - "Attica .... Attica" I'm yet to purchase it though.
Yet another one. I remember when that first appeared on TV and couldn't believe they muted the audio during the campfire scene. I guess the censors found that offensive, yet they allowed the "N" word? Wth? Were the censors prudish racists?
Quote: any John Wayne movie or Eastwood movie or Stiller movie or Sandler movie the Die Hard movies the Bourne movies
Everytime a thread like this comes up, I always seem to forget some good movies... Hang'em High was a good one, The Good, bad and ugly was another. Blood work was one of Eastwoods best but maybe his best role was in Gran Torino or Million Dollar Baby.. He was also good in The Eiger Sanction.
And how the hell could I forget John Wayne... Gheesh...
