http://time-blog.com/middle_east/February 23, 2007 6:55 Jesus: Tales from the Crypt Posted by Tim McGirk | Comments (983) | Permalink | Trackbacks (0) | Email This Brace yourself. James Cameron, the man who brought you 'The Titanic' is back with another blockbuster. This time, the ship he's sinking is Christianity. In a new documentary, Producer Cameron and his director, Simcha Jacobovici, make the starting claim that Jesus wasn't resurrected --the cornerstone of Christian faith-- and that his burial cave was discovered near Jerusalem. And, get this, Jesus sired a son with Mary Magdelene. No, it's not a re-make of "The Da Vinci Codes'. It's supposed to be true. Let's go back 27 years, when Israeli construction workers were gouging out the foundations for a new building in the industrial park in the Talpiyot, a Jerusalem suburb. of Jerusalem. The earth gave way, revealing a 2,000 year old cave with 10 stone caskets. Archologists were summoned, and the stone caskets carted away for examination. It took 20 years for experts to decipher the names on the ten tombs. They were: Jesua, son of Joseph, Mary, Mary, Mathew, Jofa and Judah, son of Jesua. Israel's prominent archeologist Professor Amos Kloner didn't associate the crypt with the New Testament Jesus. His father, after all, was a humble carpenter who couldn't afford a luxury crypt for his family. And all were common Jewish names. There was also this little inconvenience that a few miles away, in the old city of Jerusalem, Christians for centuries had been worshipping the empty tomb of Christ at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Christ's resurrection, after all, is the main foundation of the faith, proof that a boy born to a carpenter's wife in a manger is the Son of God. But film-makers Cameron and Jacobovici claim to have amassed evidence through DNA tests, archeological evidence and Biblical studies, that the 10 coffins belong to Jesus and his family. Ever the showman, (Why does this remind me of the impresario in another movie,"King Kong", whose hubris blinds him to the dangers of an angry and very large ape?) Cameron is holding a New York press conference on Monday at which he will reveal three coffins, supposedly those of Jesus of Nazareth, his mother Mary and Mary Magdalene. News about the film, which will be shown soon on Discovery Channel, Britain's Channel 4, Canada's Vision, and Israel's Channel 8, has been a hot blog topic in the Middle East (check out a personal favorite: Israelity Bites) Here in the Holy Land, Biblical Archeology is a dangerous profession. This 90-minute documentary is bound to outrage Christians and stir up a titanic debate between believers and skeptics. Stay tuned. --Tim McGirk/Jerusalem

Was fortunate to spend a month there back in 2005... I know that ALOT of Christians flock to the city daily just to get a glimpse of this tomb... There are some things that the Jews will pass on as facts and some they have speculation regarding holy sites in the city...
For example, the Church of Dormition used to mark where Mary (mother of Jesus) died and the Last Supper Room. They are symbolic structures to mark history and they are located near where history marks the events. The problem is that there is too much uncertainty of those structures being the true locations... The same goes for the Tomb of King David....
As far as the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the sites of the Crucifiction and tomb were enshrined by Constatine's mother Helena a few centuries after the events. Even though the Jews do not believe in Christ as a Savior, they do not refute that the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is the acurate location for Christ's tomb and crucifiction...

Maybe Da Vinci's LMAO... if you don't know what I'm talking about read about the conterversies behind the shroud
And no... it wouldn't... no way DNA would survive that long without being preserved.

Do you think that the Bahamian Family Court could bother these players to determine the paterninty of Anna Nicole's baby daughter???? Goes to show you if you wait long enough you can claim almost anything with impunity since it is most difficult to prove anything pro or conafter 2000 years.

Each other? They would attempt to prove that Mary was the mother of Jesus and that Jesus and Mary M were the parents of Judah. Wonder why Joseph wasn't buried there.

I'm not saying it does, I'm just saying that testing the different bodies to find their relationships to each other would make sense.

This film probably came about through a conversation like this:
"Dude, do you see how popular the Da Vinci Code has gotten?" "yea man, its unreal!" "We should jump on this money train and make a controversial film about Jesus!" "Dude, that is a great idea." "Lets cash in on this Da Vinci thing."
I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch......

It's entirely possible they are comparing DNA to the Shroud of Turin or to the Spear of Destiny, which is also called spearhead of the Holy Lance of Hapsburg. The spearhead still has blood on the blade, and the shroud has blood too. I do believe blood samples were taken off the shroud in the 80s. I am unsure if the church has turned over the spear for testing. If both match up with the tombs, that would make for an interesting controversy.

"There was also this little inconvenience that a few miles away, in the old city of Jerusalem, Christians for centuries had been worshipping the empty tomb of Christ at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. " Yes indeed...............I took a tour of Jerusalem back in the 90's when our ship pulled into Isreal. I walked up to the tomb of Christ in Jerusalem....it was a little odd for me! Nobody knows for sure if that tomb is more then just a tourist attraction, so sad to say. I just found it so insane to see so many people outside selling holy water in a little bottle...............but I guess that is life in the fast lane! I went to many places............on a tourist bus! They took us to the building where the last supper was at.............that was a very doubtful situation as well! One thing that did stick out.......the Wailing Wall............that place is for real.........lots of people were getting married there and praying! If you are getting married you need lots of prayers! LOTS!

How did you feel when you were over there? Did you feel a sort of "religious experience" there OR did you have an "uncomfortable feeling" due to the threat of terrorism in the country? I have longed to go there and visit the Jordan River or even Jerusalem if I knew that everything was safe.. .It's sad when I have to think about my own safety to visit a religious site.....

This is complete B.S. How could he have just found this now? Don't you think that this would have already been found considering that a majority of the leaders in that era did NOT believe that Jesus was the son of God? There have been millions of searches for his body to no avail. This guy didn't just happen to stumble upon Christ's corpse. Not trying to kill the messenger, beerdowner. Thanks for the post!!!

Not only that Brown but think about this, All of the diggings and wars fought on that land should have unearthed something a lot earlier than 1980, Hell, if they found king Tut's tomb back in the 20's, than what about Jesus' "alleged tomb" in 1980?? What was the delay in finding that one......

Good point, Mike. I think it is funny that people will flock to this hoping to find that it really was Jesus. I hate to tell them this, but it's not... Most of the time people HOPE that Jesus is just a myth so that they will not be held accountable for their actions. God bless them.

They always come up with something
This exactly what the Bible talks about Satan "Waging war on the Saints" (Followers of God) doing everything he can to try and break our faith
This movie is/will be a complete all out assault on the christian faith, much like the Da Vinci code, it is all Satan's work.
The Bible says there is " Spritual wickedness in High Places" Satan gets his cronies who are popular that can reach millions of people to publish this drivel to do everything he can to attack our faith.
It's too bad these people have no idea what they do, they really have no idea of the ramifications these actions are gonna lead to later, It's gonna lead them to an eternity of "wailing and gnashing of teeth"
that is what is wrong with American soceity today, the reason the rest of the World sees us as evil is because, i hate to say this, but most of America is evil
You compare this country 80 years ago to now, ands there is a big difference, My Grandma is gonna be almost 90 pretty soon, and G-D bless he has made sure her mind is as sharp as a 20 year old, she takes care of her self, there is absolutly no slowness or loss of mind in this lady at all, actually doctoros couldn't belive her age and that she takes care of her self, they were in complete disbelief in how in tact her mind is, im telling ya she is sharp.
to make a long story short, she said you "never" heard of such things goin on now when she was growing up, there were no rapists, and these other morons there is in soceity today, it just didn't go on back then. maybe 1 out of every 15 million people did somehting like that, not 1 out of 2
The problem with this country is anything that has to do with G-D has been tossed out the window. for the 1st time in recent history of this country you get laughed at and ridiculed for being a Bible beliving christian, it makes me sick
you cna't pray in school no more, you cna't bring a Bible to school, you cna't have the 10 commandments on a court wall, all of this stuff is the basis and history of this country
Sad to say G-D has lifted his veil of protection off of the United States. Because during WW2 we were a Country of G-D and were able to defeat a great Evil(Adolfph Hitler) who was in league with the Mammon himself, but G-D gave us the strength to stand up to Hitler and Defeat him, restoring a brieif period of peace and a better life.
But we as a country have forsaken G-D, the only true Christians left in this country are among the honest hard working people, usually the poor that works and struggle to get by to feed their families and rely on G-D for their strength. usually out of the city life, The Christians that are left in this country i feel are probably the last generation, and belive it or not, we are probably the last hope for mankind, for G-D's patience is not without limits, he is a loving G-D but he is also a G-D of veangeance that is slow to anger, but when his patience reaches it's limits he will begin to bring many things to try and get the people to repent of their ways, and if they fail to do so, then look no farther than Sodom and Gommorah(which archelaogists have found by the way, suffered an unexplained cataclysm, fire, brimestone, large craters in the earth made by balls of fire, no Volcano's or such within 3,500 miles of it, signs of G-d's wrath for their disobediance)
I pray everyday that G-D gives us one more day for the Sun to rise in the morning, because our time is running short. America has went from a country that loved G-D, to a country that think's it is bigger then G-D and beats it's chest mocking G-D. it accepts homosexuality with open arms, sexual immorality is common place, divorce is like a hollywood fasion, and blasphemy is common place among afternoon television.
Call me too serious or not, but something like this truely upsets me, and i just pray each and everyday something happens and this country turns from it's sinful ways because if we don't, the repercussions will be severe

Sounds to me that someone is denying a possibility before it's even looked at. I just don't understand a few things about the common christian mind.
Why is it so unbelievable that Jesus could have been married? He was refered to as "Rabbi". A rabbi had to be married by Jewish law. God's first commandment to his people was to go forth and multiply. I don't see what the big deal would be.
Did his physical body get transported to heaven? I seem to recall this being very vague in the christian faith.
I also love to see this being portrayed as an attack by the great personification of evil that the christians believe in. If god really is what most christians say he is, then you only have to worry about your personal conduct in his eyes. Maybe this is just a test of your personal faith. I just find it very interesting that the average christian gives just as much belief to a personification of evil as they do to the personification of good.
I for one, will be watching this entire situation with interest. There are more prophecies and beliefs than just the christian. I also want to see if St. Malachy's prophecies are correct (there should only be one more pope after Benedict XVI, Peter Romanus.)

The tomb stated it was "James, brother of Jesus" in Arameaic or another ancient language.
This was found to be fake. There was an archeologist that was digging up artifacts and putting names on them. His team would then "antique" that artifact to make it appear as genuine as possible. This was done to a great many artifacts from that period, but now all his "finds" are being reviewed.

This was on Yahoo News: Scholars, clergy slam Jesus documentary By MARSHALL THOMPSON, Associated Press Writer 39 minutes ago JERUSALEM - Archaeologists and clergymen in the Holy Land derided claims in a new documentary produced by the Oscar-winning director James Cameron that contradict major Christian tenets. "The Lost Tomb of Christ," which the Discovery Channel will run on March 4, argues that 10 ancient ossuaries — small caskets used to store bones — discovered in a suburb of Jerusalem in 1980 may have contained the bones of Jesus and his family, according to a press release issued by the Discovery Channel.
One of the caskets even bears the title, "Judah, son of Jesus," hinting that Jesus may have had a son. And the very fact that Jesus had an ossuary would contradict the Christian belief that he was resurrected and ascended to heaven.
Most Christians believe Jesus' body spent three days at the site of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem's Old City. The burial site identified in Cameron's documentary is in a southern Jerusalem neighborhood nowhere near the church.
In 1996, when the BBC aired a short documentary on the same subject, archaeologists challenged the claims. Amos Kloner, the first archaeologist to examine the site, said the idea fails to hold up by archaeological standards but makes for profitable television.
"They just want to get money for it," Kloner said.
The claims have raised the ire of Christian leaders in the Holy Land.
"The historical, religious and archaeological evidence show that the place where Christ was buried is the Church of the Resurrection," said Attallah Hana, a Greek Orthodox clergyman in Jerusalem. The documentary, he said, "contradicts the religious principles and the historic and spiritual principles that we hold tightly to."
Stephen Pfann, a biblical scholar at the University of the Holy Land in Jerusalem who was interviewed in the documentary, said the film's hypothesis holds little weight.
"I don't think that Christians are going to buy into this," Pfann said. "But skeptics, in general, would like to see something that pokes holes into the story that so many people hold dear."
"How possible is it?" Pfann said. "On a scale of one through 10 — 10 being completely possible — it's probably a one, maybe a one and a half."
Pfann is even unsure that the name "Jesus" on the caskets was read correctly. He thinks it's more likely the name "Hanun."
Kloner also said the filmmakers' assertions are false.
"It was an ordinary middle-class Jerusalem burial cave," Kloner said. "The names on the caskets are the most common names found among Jews at the time."
Archaeologists also balk at the filmmaker's claim that the James Ossuary — the center of a famous antiquities fraud in Israel — might have originated from the same cave. In 2005, Israel charged five suspects with forgery in connection with the infamous bone box.
"I don't think the James Ossuary came from the same cave," said Dan Bahat, an archaeologist at Bar-Ilan University. "If it were found there, the man who made the forgery would have taken something better. He would have taken Jesus."
Although the documentary makers claim to have found the tomb of Jesus, the British Broadcasting Corporation beat them to the punch by 11 years.
Osnat Goaz, a spokeswoman for the Israeli government agency responsible for archaeology, declined to comment before the documentary was aired. So basically ... this is a rehash of an 11 year old claim/documetary/money-grab that people have already torn to peices.
