Cardinals haven’t shown interest in re-signing Breaston
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on December 29, 2010, 9:38 AM EST
Brandon Flowers, Kendrick Lewis, Steve Breaston

The Cardinals may watch another one of their best young homegrown players walk away via free agency this offseason.

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic passes along the surprising news that Arizona has shown “little interest” in re-signing receiver Steve Breaston to a new contract. The collective bargaining agreement doesn’t seem to be the issue here.

Somers says that the team either just doesn’t want to spend the money or has concerns about Breaston’s long term health. The fourth-year receiver tore his meniscus early in the season, and has played through pain much of the year. He saw his playing time limited against the Cowboys on Christmas.

Breaston put up over 1,700 yards combined between 2008-2009 as the team’s No. 3 receiver, and his 2010 production hasn’t fallen off much considering the team’s quarterback mess. He leads the team in yards-per-catch and has 692 yards. Somers believes letting Breaston walk could send a dangerous message to the rest of the team.
“No player worked harder to make himself relevant than did Breaston,” Somers wrote.
Breaston is going to get paid well whenever free agency starts. It’s looking more likely he won’t get paid by the Cardinals.

I've always thought Breaston was pretty good, but I'm not sure he's a no. 1. I think we already have a couple of no. 2 WRs.

Maybe they'll let Fitzgerald walk and keep Breaston.

No thanks on Breaston... he's like every other WR we have with no chance of ever becoming a #1. Let some other team sign him as a depth wideout... we need a top guy.

He might be a good WCO type receiver - good YAC potential. On the other hand, he is from Michigan and, as we all know, we are very mean to receivers from Michigan.

I don't see him as a #1, but I also see him as a better #2 than what we have... and I'm all for bringing in anyone that makes us better.

If that means - God forbid - we cut Stuckey or somebody... big deal. We need non-headcase playmakers at WR... and he's just that.

I think he'd be an upgrade over what we have because I'm not sure ours qualify as #2 receivers...

Obviously he's better than what we currently have.

If we can pay him like a #2 then I'm all for it.

^ This. Take him, Vincent Jackson, and a top rookie, and we start to put together a real receiving corps.

I want a true #. If this guy is overpriced head trauma looking for a home, forget it. If we get an air-oriented OC, then I prefer a talented FA with some good stout success. We do need some help and it should not be another raft of crapshoot projects. We have real needs here to put up some points and move sticks. And to help the newbies down the road as they develop.

Shame that's how we have to look at it. Frustrates me to no end.

I thought he was a restricted free agent so we'd have to give up draft picks....?

Pass.

Steve Breaston is the Marcus Robinson to Larry Fitzgerald's Randy Moss. There's quite a few big time WRs coming up in the draft.

I dont know how anyone can say no.

1) Breaston is better than what we have.
2) From what I've heard he isn't a locker room cancer.
3) An upgrade is an upgrade.

Sign him if the price is right. It's not legit #1's like Vincent Jackson, T.O., and Randy Moss are begging to play in Cleveland. We have to take what we can get.

the FO fixed the defensive backfield in one offseason. IMO

We need to have the receiving corps and the DL fixed too. Can both be upgraded in one off-season?

what will happen with our current free agents? do we keep DQ and Roth?

If not then the LB corps will need to be fixed, and some of those LBs are not getting any younger.

Isn't he hurt about 4 times a season?

I know that for the last two, maybe three years, I've had him at times on my fantasy teams and he's put up decent numbers - but he ALWAYS ends up back on the wire because he gets hurt.

Pass unless he's the replacement for Stuckey.

I have a laundry list of needs and tackle is about halfway down.

But that's for another thread that will come shortly after the end of the season I'm sure

Marcus Robinson caught for 1,400 yards in 1999. You can call it a fluke, but we'd be lucky to have a WR who was talented enough to even have a fluke season like that.

Actually we had one (1250 and 16 td's), but decided to trade him away for Stuckey and Trusnick. But we were going to lose him at the end of the year anyway.

And looking back over his history with 2 different teams ..... it was a fluke season.

The difference between Breaston and Massoquoi. Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald vs Quinn, Anderson,Delhomme,Wallace and Robiskie.
Breaston wont do much for us, these third receivers from teams like this almost never do anything anywhere else.
He had one of the best set of circumstnaces to play in a receiver could possibly ask for. Same as the Colts 3rd receiver.

I'm hopeing we bring in a established Veteran or two at WR to help Colt, last thing Colt needs is a rookie hard enough having a QB learn the postion than toss in another rookie learning at the same time, we;ve seen how that goes. Not against adding a WR in the 1st round but think we could add a vetran WR and fill other needs in the first, DE RT LB

I tend to agree as my feeling is you can get receivers a bit later.

BUT....if AJ or Julio is there, one would have to at least pause and give it some consideration.

Either one could impact this team right away, and 2-3 years down the road be impact receivers league wide.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
