Many fans who want Holmgren to coach can't even pronounce or spell his name right (they call him "Holgrem.")
SMH.
That annoys me to no end. It's pronounced Holmgren people. Not Holgren, Holgrun, or Holgrem.

An argument could be made for the 2005 draft. It resulted in Braylon Edwards (a #1 WR even if he was a head-case and had the dropsies), Brodney Pool (a solid starting NFL safety), Charlie Frye (a 3rd round QB who I think McCoy ends up more similar to then many want to believe) and of course Josh Cribbs.
The 2006 NFL draft was just as good. It gave us Kam Wimbley (a serviceable but not great pass-rusher who has excelled since the move to Oakland), D'Qwell Jackson (our leading tackler for forever and our best ILB not named Fujita), Jerome Harrison in the 5th and Lawrence Vickers in the 6th.
And obviously the '07 draft with Thomas, Wright and McDonald.
Mind you I'm not saying any of those drafts were epic either, just that I think when we look back in 10 years the 2010 draft won't look any better than those.

Yeah, cause Gruden can only look great while inheriting a team w/ a super solid foundation built by someone like, let's say Tony Dungy.
I saw someone else use this point on here within the past couple of weeks, but it needs to be mentioned whenever Gruden's name is dragged through the garbage because he took "Dungy's team" to the Super Bowl.
What team did Gruden face in the Super Bowl? The Raiders.
What team did Gruden coach the previous season? The Raiders.
Gruden may have won with "Dungy's team" but if that was "Dungy's team" then "Gruden's team" was also in the Super Bowl as he had coached the Raiders the four previous seasons.
Great point. Not one I've ever heard mentioned.
I admire Gruden for his work ethic and almost crazy dedication to learning the sport (unmatched). I think he'd do great here in Cleveland w/ MH.
I said I thought he was a TAD bit overrated. I didn't say he was bad. I'd be nothing but optimistic if we hired Gruden.

Fewell has been talked about as a head coaching candidate for a while because of his resume, not his skin color.
I agree that there are some interviews that will "just satisfy the Rooney Rule" but w/ this guy, I seriously think people are intrigued.

Good luck elsewhere Eric Mangini. I wanted to keep you but I guess it wasn't in the cards. I'm sure you will find another job. You brought a good change here to Cleveland. Thanks

Mangini was a good coach who just couldn't win. He'll land on his feet somewhere while he's collecting millions of Randy Lerner's cash.
As for the search for the next head coach of the Browns...I hope Holmgren searches the entire country to find the best guy. There is someone out there who is capable of turning this team around pretty quickly. It's up to Holmgren to find him.

This has been done many, many times. And in some cases not for "long hauls" though. So we gotta get the guy who can do both. I'm not talking about winnning 4 straight Super Bowls,....just getting to that stable point every August where other fans have to say "damn, we got the Browns this year ?"

Pretty sure he ended the year on the IR.
Lauvao has been on the active roster the entire season.
This. Pashos and Yates were the guys on OL to end on IR.
Lauvao had the high ankle sprain.
True he was bad during his only start, but let's give him a chance before we write him off.

He just needs some time to get over the injury and learn how to block at the pro level.
He is strong, smart, agile and fast. I'm still optimistic.

If he were strong, smart, agile and fast he would have been playing. He's a 4th round guard. He has the ability to be good,in the future. It was something more than an ankle sprain that kept him out of the lineup. And that sure as hell wasn't quality players in front of him.

I've got mixed feelings on this. Mangini made some dubious in-game decisions relating to clock management and not being gutsy enough, but I think he did some good here.... cleaning out the bad apples for example, & promoting a team-tough mentality.
I always enjoyed his pressers and I wish him well. Thanks, coach.

You left out StClair. Yates? C'mon a practice squad guy? I don't know the reasons why he wasn't playing, but I would suspect being a rookie had alot to do with it. 4th round guards take some time, patience and practice. We'll see what we have in the near future.

Gruden also had contrary ownerships he had to work with in Oakland and TB.
He is not a career assistant coordinator. He is a head coach who has successfully won a SB and not just as a coordinator like many others who get plucked from the ranks of play off teams to become head coach's and many are not successful, because they are not always as good at leading as they are with X's and O's.

Bye Mangini if it wasn't for your terrible OC and your terrible game management you might have had a chance.
I would like to retain a 3-4 defense and switch to a WCO cause those are the schemes that compliment the talent we do have. I hope we keep the ST coach. As far as Ryan I wouldn't mind keeping him either. Either way the new coach has to reign over his coordinators which I am sure as a former HC that Holmgren will allow.
Go Browns!!

I didn't want Mangini to be fired but what's done is done.
I just hope we take our time, do our due dilligence and hire the right guy for the job.
I don't want a guy to be hired because he is friends with this guy or that guy, or because everybody else thinks he will succeed.
I want them to do thier homework and look at every possible angle on finding our next head coach.
I really don't care what rank our coach comes from be it college, previous head coach, successful coordinator, retired player, high school coach, Espn analyst.... Whatever, I don't care. As long as the guy can prepare a team for game day, make in game adjustments, manage the clock and can surround himself with coordinators who have had some success in this league.

I think Holmgren was fair in giving Mangini this year.
I think his firing had as much to do with last year's post season assessment (coaches and players) as this seasons performance.
The hiring of Mangini was flawed to begin with. Now Holmgren has the opportunity to frame the future in his preferred manner.

Bingo and good post.
That is the 1000 pound elephant that nobody wants to talk about. Gini was dead this time last year when MH was hired. Most of us were shocked that Mike kept him then and didn't hire his own guy, but I guess with the winning streak and the fact Gini did do some good things as far as cleaning up the "club med" culture we had around here....Mike gave him a year. Imo he shouldn't have because it was inevitable that his philosophy and Gini's just weren't compatible.
Some of you guys are acting like canning Gini was this huge mistake, but the truth is the big mistake was made last year when Holmgren just didn't put his people in place at that point. We are a year behind of where we would have been, and really didn't win any more games this year with the "continuity" than we would have done with the system changes that are coming a year later anyway. Now a year later we are going to have some major upheaval (especially on D) and are in year 2 instead of year 1.
I'm not upset that Holmgren wants to bring in his people, but I am upset he wasted a year by not firing Gini last year and getting it going. In the end that was his 1st mistake........not realizing that him and Gini were just too different to coexist.

I think that it was a mistake only because of the fact that Holmgren is never going to want a head coach who plays it close to the vest, runs the ball a lot, plays defense, and works to win close games.
Holmgren thought that he could work with such a coach, and with such a philosophy .... but if you read just ever so slightly between the lines of his press conference, he just couldn't. He was never going to be happy with that philosophy. He talked about wins having to be the determining factor, but then went on to talk about how the next guy might not have all of the pieces in place, so he hopes people will be patient. That was the Mangini argument ...... and it was disregarded with regard to Mangini, yet brought back into play with a future head coach. That says that wins were not really the determining factor.
I would guess that if Mangini were a coach that Holmgren was more familiar with, and who ran system that Holmgren was familiar and comfortable with, he would probably still be here. However, I think that Holmgren became more and more uncomfortable with the overall philosophy as the year went by, and that was really his final determining factor.

That pretty much sums it up. Mike should have just canned him last year and brought in his people. We basically wouldn't have done much if any worse by gutting the D than we did with keeping Gini and the systems in place...........now we will do all of that this off season anyway and be a year behind were we could have been.
I'm not upset that Gini got fired (although I do think he did some good things here), but I do wish this would have been done last year instead of just wasting year 1 of the rebuild.

The reason I don't see it as a mistake, though a good argument could be made, and you made it, that he could have canned EM at the end of last season and got a jump start.
The reason I don't see it as a mistake is because Holmgren was himself just beginning to start in a role he's never been in. That put a hell of a lot on his plate. Had he fired Mangini then he'd have had to hastily evaluated the team roster and give due diligence to finding a head coach at the same time he's trying to set up the organization.
I feel he did the right thing. He gave himself a season to get the organization in place and running smoothly, he gave himself a season to evaluate the team with Heckart and he was a fair as fair could be in giving Mangini a chance to prove himself with the full support of the FO. That should go a long way in hiring the next head coach.
Naw Willie, I think he did it right although to us it does seem to have postponed the inevitable for a whole year. I think he's in a much better situation to hire a coach than he would have been at the beginning of '10.

I agree wholeheartedly with that. Holmgren's philosophy is one that plays to win vs. the close-to-the-vest, don't make mistakes and play for a chance to win before the clock runs out.
There's nothing wrong with either philosophy as good coaches have won plenty with both. But if I'm the guy in charge who likes to play to win, every time I see a close-to-the-vest game get lost I'm going to be one anxiety ridden guy in charge. I don't want to be that guy throughout my tenure.
In addition, as the guy in charge, although I know there's more than one way to skin a cat, if I don't believe that cat will ever get skinned by the head cat-skinner then I'm going to pull the plug and find someone I can have confidence in to do the job.
I think Holmgren made his reason for this decision when he said,
“Although we have made improvements this season, my responsibility is to ensure that we establish a program that will allow this team to compete at a championship level."
In some very diplomatic words he simply said he didn't believe Mangini's program would do that.

And you know this how?
Lets just say I do have some knowledge of things ..but perhaps U have a better reason(s)..
Here's how it is. Who the hell was gonna come in here and coach last year? Seriously? What coach worth his salt was going to come here with the talentless group we had.
If he fired Mangini last year, who would have come here? Would ANYONE better have been interested? Nope.
and you have no idea what goes on behind the scenes in our Fo and coaching staff. It would be far more stupid to run plays you simply don't have the personnel to execute and Gini didn't get any help to speak of on the O side of the ball in the draft either.
You can't run plays you don't have the players on your roster to execute. And you need to know very little to comprehend that.
PPE is dead spot on. Far too many know nothing know it alls who have their selves sold more than those around them that thwey are somehow SO much more educated in the game.

Not that it's directed toward anyone in particular. But anyone who believes trying to call plays you can't ewxecute? Just watch the last two games again because that's exactly what happened. We DID try to run something far closer to a WCO and it failed miserably.
There's your proof. I'm sure it can be seen again. Colt was told to do more than he wqas ready for. We ran a more WCO type game plan it we fell on our faces. So much for that theory.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I don't think it's much of a setback. I looked at it as a great gamble... if Mangini really turned it around in year 2, Holmgren looks like a genius for keeping him.
As it is, all the significant players we added will be fine in the new schemes:
Haden, Ward, Brown - secondary Fujita and Gocong - originally 4-3 backers Watson - good all-around TE, useful in just about any scheme (unless you're Mike Martz and want a de facto 6th lineman) Hillis - a back that can run, block, and catch? yes please... McCoy - WCO QB
And I think week 17 showed us all that we're going to need a little more building time to really compete in this division.

We ran a more WCO type game plan it we fell on our faces. So much for that theory.
So much for a close-to-the-vest offensive guru trying to run a type of WCO for a few plays.
Honestly, we didn't have much choice but to be pass happy. Hillis was hurt bad and he's the offense we had all year. Because he was ridden like a bad mule all season with no backup worth a crap it was inevitable that he'd either wear down a bit or be hurt.
And to suddenly become pass happy expecting our WR's to also suddenly elevate their game was asking a lot from a unit rarely used all season.
I'd have liked to see us incorporate our WR's more in the game plans early in the season and they might have been contributing down the stretch. Instead we relied on Hillis and Watson almost exclusively and teams had only to load the box and double Watson and we were helpless.
