So the question on Newton is: How high would you select him? There are probably 2 answers. One if you think Colt is the boy. The other if you don't. I would love to hear what you guys think his draft rank should for a team with no QB, then answer where you would select him if you were Heckert.

Cam Newton's ability is beyond tempting.
But I don't think he has the "IT" for the next level like a McCoy or Tebow has.

His biggest asset is his ability to run the ball. In the NFL he won't be able to run the ball as well as he did in college.
I think he is an average passer.
Less success running the ball + average passer = no thanks.
I know he will probably go in the top half of the 1st round, but it better be to a team that doesn't plan on using him right away.

I wouldn't draft him at all. Meaning, I don't want him on my team at all. I know you guys will probably kill me for this, but if we're talking about playing QB, I'd draft Pryor before I drafted Newton.
Let me at least give my few reasons.
Newton's success has come in a run-first role in his offense. How's that going to work against the likes of Kelly Gregg, Haloti Ngata, Ray Lewis, and company? How about Casey Hampton, Aaron Smith, Lawrence Timmons, and Troy Polamalu? While he has Big-Ben like strength, he doesn't show as much ability to still make plays downfield when pressure gets to him, so I think those comparisons are overly generous.
Terrelle Pryor, while not a great passer, has shown the ability to make big plays with his arm downfield after the pocket breaks down. Even with receivers who aren't very good, he shows this over and over. I don't think I've ever seen a QB handle and escape from a pass rush like Pryor. He doesn't quite have the superhuman strength like Newton does, but he always seems to know exactly when to move and exactly how much faster he is than the rusher. He knows when he's got something downfield and when he should just take off. He has made the likes of Brian Robiskie, Devier Posey, and Dane Sanzenbacher all look like Friday draft picks. While I think Sanzenbacher can be a significant receiver in the league, the other two I think will just be acceptables. Pryor does occasionally not see an open man downfield, but I think that is something that can be improved with NFL coaching.
The point of this is not to say that I think we should draft Pryor next year, just that I don't think that Newton is that good (for an NFL offense.) I don't like the whole pay-to-play thing either... I'd be worried about a sense of entitlement from this guy.

I, actually, completely agree with you.
To qualify myself, the only game I ever saw Newton play was the Bowl Game, but I was utterly unimpressed with him as a QB. Just judging the look on his face pre-snap, that dude was struggling to decipher his reads and the slightest bit of pressure caused his accurracy to go into the toilet... and all that against a simple college defense.
Basically, unless he was a WIDE open receiver or a running lane - he sucked.
I see him as just another athlete/RB that can throw the ball from teh QB position, like Vince Young, Tebow and Jamarcus Russel.
I'd say that his ceiling is Vince Young (which still isn't good), but I think he'll end up between Vince and Jamarcus (ya gotta really work at not caring to drop to Jamarcus' level).

Chad Henne could be had for as low as a 4th round pick if some sources are to be believed (not sure I do). Reclamation projects like Matt Leinart, Jamarcus Russell, and Trent Edwards are readily available.

AJ Green, while i'm skeptical on how good he'll be, or if he'll even be there, is a need.
Blaine Gabbert is an interesting pick, he's a tall, strong armed QB, seems to have good accuracy. If they feel he'd be better than McCoy, how do you NOT make the pick?
Oline or Dline in Round 2. I'd prefer a RT, but depending on how many Dlineman we need (4 or 3) it may be more of a need.

It worries me that he only saw the field half the time his first year at Auburn. Could be a one year wonder.
Doesn't matter as he probably won't be around for us to draft him anyway.

After his 5 game suspension, Pryor should come back as a WR. a 6'6 WR with his speed? He is often the fastest guy on the field. Deep posts and slants all game. Fade in the red zone. He'd be a beast

One thing that stuck out to me, it's time to really study WR's because it seems obvious that we are drafting one with our first pick. Our new HC wants an explosive passing game and we clearly need an explosive WR to do that. I'll be shocked now if we don't take one.

Jones doesn't impress me that much, not as a #1 caliber guy.
Pretty sure, barring someones stock rising a ton, we're either going Green or Dline.
I'd like to throw Gabbert out there, but Colts Holmgrens guy, so I doubt thatd happen.

I understand the comparison, but I really disagree with it. Newton is heads and shoulders above Tebow as a passer. Newton has a cannon arm and a relatively quick motion with decent mechanics. Tebow lacked all of those. The only similarities between them are offensive scheme and running ability really. As a player, Newton is a legitimate top 10 pick in many people's eyes. However, I wouldn't touch him in the first.

Cecil has already succeeded. He got to try to bribe MissSt, he likely bribed Auburn, and he got to attend the Nat'l Champ game despite being on "super-secret probation" from Auburn and not supposed to go

U mad?  Cam Newton will do fine in the NFL.. He'll definitely last longer than Jamarcus Russell.

That's not saying much.
Cam's career will likely be that of Vince Young.
He'll start slow, have a couple awesome plays/games but then the lack of actual talent of being a QB will eventually catch up to him.

It's obvious that OSguy is a hater.
Young didn't have the light switch in the ol' noggin to have a long lasting career, but Cam Newton is no dummy.
Cam and Tebow are different, but they so remind me of each other. Cam however is a FREAK physical specimen, and some team is gonna get a gem.
Even got me thinking that Carolina may roll the dice on him. They have Brees, Ryan, and Freeman in their division. Adding Newton would do some justice for the Panthers.

I think it'd be interesting if the Titans took him at #8. I wouldn't be surprised if he wen't #1 overall. Frankly I could see him going in 4 or 5 spots in the top 10.
I could see Carolina going with Yo Gabba Gabbert at #1 also if QB is their need. But, my gut says either Fairley or Green (another weapon if they believe Claussen is the guy).

I think Cam Newton goes #16 to Jacksonville. They'll groom him to be Garrard's replacement IMO.
Man the juniors who decided to stay in school have sucked a LOT of talent away from this draft. The biggest hit positions?
QB, WR and CB don't have nearly the depth once projected.
At QB it's Mallett....then umm....Jake Locker? He had a horrible year. Cameron Newton? Originally a 2nd round project is now surely a mid 1st round guy. Blaine Gabbert? I don't trust him at ALL. I will LOL @ whomever rolls the dice on this guy in the 1st round. But, with the lack of QB talent he's a sure-fire 2nd rounder at least. After that it's Christian Ponder I guess then a whole bunch of nothing.
At WR there are now 2 "elite" guys in AJ Green and Julio Jones that will both go top 15. Then in that 2nd tier of late 1st round to 2nd round guys there is Torrey Smith, Jonathan Baldwin and Leonard Hankerson. Then comes what I consider the mid-round small school guys in Austin Pettis and Titus Young from Boise and Dwyane Harris from E Carolina. Everything after that is late round fliers at best.
At CB there are again 2 "elite" top 5-10 picks in Prince Amukamara and Patrick Peterson. Solid second tier guys are Jimmy Smith, Brandon Burton and Davon House. Mid to late round guys include Brandon Harris, Aaron Williams, Curtis Brown, Ras-I Dowling, Johnny Patrick and Chimdi Chekwa. Late round fliers could be Marcus Gilchrist, Korey Lindsey, Shareece Wright and Chris Rucker.

Right now I have Newton projected 3rd to the Bills. He is everything Chan Gailey wants. I think Gabbert is the next QB off the board, with Locker third. Mallett is 4th, at the end of the first or early 2nd. Character is huge. Wide receiver is still extremely deep with lots of talent at the top. Great class there.
