Lack of talent? Cam and Young both lack many things, but talent is not one of them.

Lack of QB Talent is what I said.

I'm no hater. Just because someone can throw to the wide open WR in college and run doesnt mean he's going to be an NFL QB.

VY lacked the measurables that a top tier NFL QB has, and i've seen nothing that shows Cam has them...

But apparently thats because I hate him...

Right now I have Newton projected 3rd to the Bills. He is everything Chan Gailey wants. I think Gabbert is the next QB off the board, with Locker third. Mallett is 4th, at the end of the first or early 2nd. Character is huge. Wide receiver is still extremely deep with lots of talent at the top. Great class there.

Going to have to agree to disagree at WR. It has 2 elite guys but it's certainly not "deep" now that Blackmon and Floyd are gone. Nobody else projects as a #1 at all and those 2nd level guys will mostly be possesion or slot guys. Good players but not good enough that I'd call the position "deep".

This draft is terrible for LT, RB (and QB) IMO. It's crazy deep in DLine however.

My 1st round FWIW. As always subject to change weekly if not daily lol.

1. Carolina - Nick Fairley DT Auburn
2. Denver - Da'Quan Bowers DE Clemson
3. Buffalo - Cameron Jordan DE Cal
4. Cincinnati - Patrick Peterson CB/S LSU
5. Arizona - Prince Amukamara CB Nebraska
6. Cleveland - AJ Green WR Georgia
7. SF - Marcell Dareus DE Alabama
8. Tennesee - Robert Quinn DE N Carolina
9. Dallas - JJ Watt DE Wisconsin
10. Washington - Julio Jones WR Alabama
11. Houston - Von Miller OLB Texas A&M
12. Minnesota - Derek Sherrod OT Mississippi St
13. Detroit - Akeem Ayers ILB UCLA
14. StL - Ryan Kerrigan DE Purdue
15. Miami - Ryan Mallett QB Arkansas
16. Jacksonville - Cam Newton QB Auburn
17. NE - Anthony Castonzo OT Boston College
18. SD - Greg Jones ILB Michigan St
19. NYG - Mikel LeShoure RB Illinois
20. TB - Cameron Heyward DE Ohio St
21. KC - Stefen Wisniewski OC Penn St
22. Philadelphia - Marcus Cannon OG TCU
23. Indianapolis - Nate Solder OT Colorado
24. NO - Drake Nevis DT LSU
------------------------------------------ (assumed from here with playoffs)
25. Seattle - Jake Locker QB Washington
26. GB - Gabe Carimi OT Wisconsin
27. NYJ - Aldon Smith OLB Missouri
28. Baltimore - Torrey Smith WR Maryland
29. Chicago - DeMarcus Love OT Arkansas

LT is awful at the top, but has some good players for late round 1 or early round 2. Very few drafts have multiple #1 WR's. This draft has at least two. Torrey Smith and Ryan Broyles are both excellent guys in round 2, and Leonard Hankerson, Jerrel Jernigan and Greg Little are also good options. Titus Young, Ronald Johnson and Niles Paul are more options. It's a very good class.

I think your mock shows some bias. I don't see the Bengals taking a safety at #3 when they really need a WR, and A.J. Green is available. Cornerback is not a need at all for them, and I don't believe a safety has ever gone higher than 5th overall. Also, I don't see any way Cameron Jordan goes 3rd. He is not a top 5 player, and with Buffalo's need at QB, I think they have to go there. I'm also not sold on Fairley as the #1 pick, but many are.

The two players at 6 I would be most happy with would be AJ Green or Nick Fairley (I like the fact he's a little dirty). All though Marcell Dareus doesn't look so bad either. Do we need a WR bad enough we take Julio Jones at 6? We took Ward "early" and that pick seemed to work out. So who knows. I do know there will be a pick early that will surprise everyone(Tyson Alualu) especially with the QB class looking so unpredictable.

With us investing heavily in the secondary last year I can't see Hecker drafting Peterson or Prince. 4-3/3-4 either way we need a DT and also need some WRs for YAC for the WCO. I do think Heckert favors smaller faster guys (Stallworth, Maclin, Jackson..etc) I do rather enjoy the draft.

Go Browns!!

the more the merrier.

If my count is correct that puts the count of underclassmen declaring their intention to enter the Draft at 52.

One short of the record.
(2008 & 2010).

So much for the possibility of a lock out scaring many away from coming out this year.

I like Jones too but I always think you have to be cautious when you draft a WR whose biggest knock is loses focus and drops the football. I think I heard someone compare him to TO(ability wise not temperament) I think that is a pretty good comparison.

just posted an article saying we are switching to a 4-3. So I had to change a few things.

Coaches:
Mike Shurmur - Already hired so don't have to say much

Jim Zorn - Great QB coach and could help colt

Dick Jauron - Rumours point towards him. Can hopefully run a hybrid 4-3 / 3-4 defense.

Free Agency:
Mathias Kiwanuka - Can be the franchise pass rushing force that we need.

James Jones - Has the skill set and experience to be a #1 WR in a WCO

John Greco - Would have started at RT for the Rams but a top 5 pick started in front of him. An ohio native and played for toledo that is strong as a bear. Greco would be a good signing and makes sense due to his ties with Shurmur. He's been a backup but I think he'd be a solid starter at RT. Plus, he'd likely come cheap

Justin King - Fast as chris johnson, provides depth at corner and knows shurman. Depth doesn't hurt. He seems to have a lot of untapped potential so I suppose it'd be a low risk/high reward type signing.

Daniel Fells - Another Shurman disciple. Has a big body and replaces Royal. Fells would be a solid signing. He had 41 receptions and 391 yards this year under Shurmur, so he'd definitely be an upgrade as the #3 TE behind Watson and Moore.

Draft:
1. Marcell Dareus, DT Alabama - Provides a sick duo with Rubin. Can be a dominating force in any style of defense.

2. Martez Wilson, ILB Illinois - Athletic freak and we would be lucky to get him. Leader of our defense for years to come.

3. Titus Young, WR Boise State - Deep threat for us. Reminds me of Santonio Holmes. Was clutch for Boise State throughout his career.

4. Greg Romeus - Romeus is so interesting to me. Prior to this year he was a top 15 lock. Then he injured his back, recovered from that and then the week he came back he tore his ACL. You could essentially be getting a Trent Cole like steal in the 4th round, or you could be drafting a bust due to injuries. I love the prospect of taking a chance on him in the 4th personally.

5. Alex Henery - I am starting to think Phil Dawson is done here and wants to just play for a superbowl contender. Henery is one of the best kickers in NCAA history

6. Markus White - Depth or practice squad guy

Final Roster:
QB Colt McCoy, Jake Delhomme, Jarrett Brown
FB Lawrence Vickers
RB Peyton Hillis, Montario Hardesty, Mike Bell
WR1 James Jones, Titus Young, Carlton Mitchell
WR2 Mohamed Massaquoi, Brian Robiskie, Joshua Cribbs,
TE Benjamin Watson, Evan Moore, Daniel Fells
LT Joe Thomas
LG Eric Steinbach,
C Alex Mack, Billy Yates
RG Shawn Lavao, Floyd Womack
RT John Greco, Tony Pashos

DE Mathias Kiwanuka, Greg Romeus, Markus White
NT Ahtyba Rubin, Travis Ivey, Derreck Robinson
DT Marcell Dareus, Shaun Rogers, Brian Schaefering
DE Marcus Benard, Jayme Mitchell, Jason Trusnik
OLB: Scott Fujita, Chris Gocong
MLB: Martez Wilson, Kaluka Maiva
OLB: DQ, Blake Costanzo
LCB Joe Haden, Justin King
RCB Eric Wright, Sheldon Brown
SS T. J. Ward, Mike Adams
FS Able Elam, Ray Ventrone

I would love to get Kiwanuka...if the price is right. The most sacks he's ever had is 8 a couple years ago so he's not a surefire stud yet IMO. But he's got potential. I think if we don't get a DE in FA (and even if we do) we're gonna have to target D-line high. I think a WR or DT/DE in the first 2 rounds is a must for us this offseason.

Agreed 100% now that we're switching to the 4-3. Based on the same mock I posted earlier here's my complete mock for the Browns only.

Rd 1 : AJ Green - WR Georgia
Rd 2 : Allen Bailey - DE43 Miami
Rd 3 : Quan Sturdivant - OLB43 North Carolina
Rd 4 : Jurrell Casey - DT43 USC
Rd 5 : Lee Ziemba - RT Auburn
Rd 6 : Derrick Locke - RB Kentucky
Rd 6 : Korey Lindsey - CB Southern Illinois

I can't argue with that. Part of me still wants to put Jones ahead of Green for the Browns, though. Ingram didn't bust all those long runs because he's so fast.

You mean down field blocking?

For running the ball?

Did you forget who our Pres/GM/Coach is?

We don't need any of that anymore...

I really doubt Casey is lasts until 70. Somebody's gonna snag him just because of his brother's play this season.

Well if we don't get Casey there is a guy named Brooks Reed that Scott Wright and a few others are comparing to Clay. Don't know much about him but he certainly looks the part of a Matthews.

If Green Bay wins the Super Bowl, they could "afford" to waste their pick on him, even if they don't/didn't need a linebacker,....

I agree, but #37 would be a reach even to a homer

I actually like Casey better in a 43, because his strengths are in coverage and I like him better on the out side.

Casey has the ability to flatten out his angle of pursuit rushing off the edge
(All the good ones do) and might turn out to be a better pass rusher then he is given credit for.

Out of those scenarios, it would appear we have no shot at Fairley, Green, Bowers, Peterson, or Dareus.

I might take JJ Watt here. Instead, I might take any graduating Wisconsin offensive lineman, or whoever the next best one in the Nation is/was.

Peterson and Haden would be "The Frank and Hanford Show" all over again for eight-to-ten years. Wow.

Homering here now, I wish Ross Homan was more physically dominating,...maybe Cam Heyward at this spot ?

How about the big Auburn offensive tackle ? Can't think of his name,....

Underclassmen will greatly affect draft again

Posted Jan. 17, 2011 @ 1:02 a.m. ET
By Dan Arkush
In one sense, a simple sentence sums up this year's underclassmen situation: The Panthers have no Luck.

As in Stanford junior QB Andrew Luck, who decided to bypass the opportunity to become a no-brainer No. 1 overall section by Carolina in the 2011 draft and remain in school for his senior season.

But in another sense — although underclassmen technically have until the end of the day Monday to change their minds and opt out — close draft observers around the league expect a record number of underclassmen to declare their eligibility for the '11 draft.

"Underclassmen could set a record for early entrants this season and appear to be more strongly represented at the very top of the draft than ever before," said one well-connected league personnel evaluator. "The senior class has continued to water down with the increasing trend the last three years."

It's a trend that has increased despite the very real possibility of a prolonged lockout and a rookie wage scale, which could significantly alter the rookie contracts likely to be covered by any new labor agreement.

"If a wage scale is in place, it's going to become more like the NBA with slotted deals, and there will not be the same looming threat of holdouts that the league has always had," one league executive told PFW.

"And that's good for the game. If two players are graded closely, we take into consideration relations we've had with the agent. Some agents are very difficult to deal with. I don't think it will be much of a factor moving forward (if a wage scale is put in place)."

Getting back to the unlucky Panthers, it's worth noting how much of a headache the highly drafted players have become in recent years.

"The way the draft was originally designed, landing a high pick was intended to help (franchises) become more competitive," the executive said. "What has happened the last five years, the salaries of the top 10 players have grown at such a ridiculous rate, it's almost been a curse to hold a high pick.

"You draft a rookie, and immediately he becomes the highest-paid player on your roster, and one of the highest-paid players in the league — and he has not taken an NFL snap yet. The bust rate in the first round is nearly 1-to-1. There is a lot of risk there — and too much money flowing out of the league to busts like (2007 No. 1 overall draft choice and former Raiders QB) JaMarcus Russell.

"... When we were (drafting highly), we were willing to give (our pick) away for next to nothing. The higher you are, the more difficult it is to find a buyer. If salaries fall back in line, these picks will be easier to move."

It's also worth noting the different time frame for free agency that will come into play if the league fails to nail down a new labor agreement before early March.

"Free agency will be a big factor that affects the draft," the executive said. "The draft will (likely) take place before free agency, so teams will have to anticipate what their needs are. They are not going to be able to address needs first in free agency."

According to PFW draft expert Nolan Nawrocki, as many as 18 underclassmen (listed below alphabetically, by position) could easily fit into the first round and dominate the top 10 picks. Asterisks indicate third-year sophomores.

Quarterbacks (3)

Blaine Gabbert, Missouri* — Projects as the draft's top quarterback, possessing excellent size, a strong arm and outstanding escapability, but, coming from a spread offense, may not be NFL-ready enough to warrant selection at the top of the draft.

Ryan Mallett, Arkansas — The strongest-armed quarterback in the draft, Mallett could also be affected by questions about his maturity related to his transfer from Michigan.

Cam Newton, Auburn — The draft's most difficult-to-defend, dual-threat thrower, Newton is flashy, but how he projects to an NFL offense remains highly debatable, given the simplified, non-progression-read offense in which he played.

Running back (1)

Mark Ingram, Alabama — A steady, consistent, hard-running, all-around back who stood out more as a sophomore than he did through an injury-plagued junior season.

Wide receivers (2)

A.J. Green, Georgia — A top-10 cinch with rare playmaking ability, Green has no discernible flaws.

Julio Jones, Alabama — A big, tough, physical playmaker who has looked like a man among boys in the Southeastern Conference since he was a freshman, Jones could also easily fit into the top 10.

Offensive tackle (1)

Tyron Smith, USC — An extremely athletic, long-armed pass protector who played on the right side and must show he can hold more weight than he did for the Trojans, where he looked like an oversized tight end.

Defensive ends (3)

Da'Quan Bowers, Clemson — A rare physical specimen with unique versatility, Bowers dropped nearly 25 pounds following his sophomore season and emerged as the nation's most-feared and productive sack artist.

Aldon Smith, Missouri* — The draft's best pure edge rusher, Smith played through injury most of the season, but his penchant for pressuring the edge and burst is rare.

J.J. Watt, Wisconsin — The top five-technique in the draft, the 6-foot-6, 290-pound anchor plays with a reckless abandon and intense energy not normally seen in a man of his stature.

Defensive tackles (3)

Marcell Dareus, Alabama — An instinctive, disruptive, rolling ball of butcher knives, Dareus played through injury as a junior but still needed to be accounted for in every game.

Nick Fairley, Auburn — The draft's quickest three-technique and best inside rusher, Fairley will have questions to answer about being a one-year wonder but has traits that are too distinctive to slip out of the top 10.

Corey Liuget, Illinois — Dropped weight to produce an eye-opening junior season and should add explosion to the inside of an attacking defense.

Outside linebackers (2)

Akeem Ayers, UCLA — An athletic, playmaking rush linebacker who still plays too undisciplined but fits the prototype for the position.

Justin Houston, Georgia — A strong, edge-rushing linebacker or defensive end, Houston has a chance to fit into the first round because of the premium placed on 3-4 outside 'backers.

Cornerbacks (3)

Brandon Harris, Miami (Fla.) — A physical, aggressive, hard-hitting cover man, Harris could even warrant looks as a safety in a similar mold as the Eagles' Marlin Jackson.

Patrick Peterson, LSU — A rare athlete for his size with game-breaking return skills, Peterson is a top-10 cinch who has shut down receivers and created big plays since the day he arrived on campus.

Aaron Williams, Texas — Very solid in the slot and loaded with upside, Williams has the traits to warrant late first-round interest despite struggling late in the season.

I am assuming that trade down is not an option. I am also assuming that we are going to a 4-3. I am not sure that I am this high on Quinn but we would need a DE that can rush. I would also consider Allen Bailey or Adrian Clayborn here. Either of them would be my pick over Quinn if we stay 3-4.

My top choices are Green, Dareus, Peterson, Fairley and if we go 4-3 Bowers. I really think Bowers and Fairley will be long gone. I sure hope a couple of Qb's go before our pick.

They can't. You can't trade those positions any longer.

You want a player, you put in a sealed bid. If you bid the most, you get the player and forfeit that pick in next years draft.

The only way Luck get to SF is if the teams ahead of the niners don't bid a 1st round selection.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
