So how did the Browns and Rams do offensively this past year when playing the same teams you ask? I asked, and checked. Here are the results .......
Tampa Bay: (Both teams lost to Tampa)
Browns: 21-38 for 227 yards 1 TD 2 INT Rams: 13-26 for 126 yards 2 TD 0 INT
Browns 340 total yards Rams 285 total yards
Carolina: (Both teams beat Carolina)
Browns: 24-35 for 245 yards 0 TD 2 INT Rams: 25-32 for 191 yards 2 TDs 0 INT
Browns 379 total yards Rams 246 total yards
Atlanta: (Both teams lost to Atlanta)
Browns: 25-39 for 246 yards 1 TD 2 INT Rams: 27-42 for 233 yards 2 TDs 1 INT
Browns 269 total yards Rams 304 total yards
New Orleans: (Browns beat N.O., Rams lost)
Browns: 10-17 for 87 yards 0 TD 0 INT Rams: 18-32 for 231 yards 0 TD 2 INT
Browns 210 total yards Rams 327 total yards
Kansas City: (Both teams lost to Rams)
Browns : 16-29 for 229 yards 1 TD 1 INT Rams: 21-43 for 181 yards 0 TD 2 INT
Browns 299 total yards Rams 224 total yards
So .... against the 5 common opponents, the Browns went 2-3 and the Rams went 1-4.
Browns QBs went 96-158 for 1034 yards, 3 TD and 7 INT Rams QB went 104-175 for 975 yards 6 TD and 5 INT
The total offensive yards are:
Browns: 1497 yards Rams: 1386 yards
Total Scoring:
Browns: 92 points Rams: 80 points
I know of 2 Browns INTs returned for TDs in the New Orleans game. I don't recall any in the other games.
In the end, both the Rams and Browns played remarkably similar games against common opponents. Total scoring is almost dead on. The Rams scored more with the pass, and the Browns more with the run. The Browns threw 2 more INT, and IIRC had 2 go back for TDs in these 5 games.(and 1 more almost do the same) The Browns had about 100 more total yards, and that's about 20 more per game, which is really not that appreciable. The Browns threw for more yards than the Rams, but again it's about 60 total yards, so hardly a huge number. In the end, the Browns had about 35 more total yards per game (on average) than the Rams.
It's almost eerie how the 2 teams played against common opponents. The Rams started a rookie QB all year long. The Browns started 3 different QBs, including a rookie.
I just thought that I would throw this out there as a comparison.

neat comparison... not sure if it tells us too much... Rams were/are a team on the rise this year... they are a long way from where they were just a couple years ago... ufortunately I only saw one game of thiers this year and that was their loss to the seahawks... looked really conservative to me, but having a rookie at QB in teh biggest game of the year will do that.
I'm happy with the WCO... I like the idea of opening up the passing game (once we get some WRs) but pray that we will continue to pound the ball now and then with Hardesty and Hillis... both of whom seem to have pretty good hands coming out of the back field.

Stats like this don't mean anything to me, but I applaud you for putting it all together b/c I know it took some time to do.
The players here are just gonna have to ante up and get some fire flowing through their veins.. No more lackadaisical playing, going inside the white lines with no emotion.. You either want to get respect that you've been crying for, or you don't. Prove it out there on the field, so after the game, the opponent will be at the podium saying the Cleveland Brown's got talent, and they are gonna surprise a few teams.
A few of our players last season did get respect, and were given props by the opposing team.. Now others need to come in and do the same.
Hillis and the pre-2010 Cribbs (lol) are the models to follow.

I didn't know Shurmur was the head coach of the Rams...
It's January 16th, Shurmur's record is 0-0.
Let's please wait until he has coached to evaluate him. (And pre-season doesn't count)

Both teams lost to KC.. quick correction. Otherwise nice post.. gave me a bit of food for thought. The one thing that pops out at me is that as the season progresses.. the Rams attempt more passes and we attempt fewer. Hmm..
(Just based on these games of course.)

Wow,, I applaud the effort,, nice job there Ytown.
I wonder how much it means. We had a seasoned vet QB starting against KC, Tampa, Kansas City and Atlanta. We had a Rookie start against only the saints,, 87 yards passing.. not a great performance, but didn't cost us anything.
The Rams had a rookie QB starting all five of those games.
we should have had better results than they did..
Just sayin

Kewl stat werk, Ytown! This was interesting. props fer the sweating in the salt mines. Stats show us close to the Rams; I think you can suffer "stat blindness" when you try to oversimplify a game, but they are handy and you do a remarkably insightful job. To suggest Shurm owns all the numbers is a stretch. But it does show to some degree the ability to post points. Especially second hlf, or especially in track meet shootouts as far as types of games. Super werk! I hope Colt gets working soon.

Nice work.
Do you have to account for the Jake Delhomme pick6-per-game factor?
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Actually, Jake had 3 in these games, against Tampa Bay, Atlanta, and Carolina, and Wallace had 1 against KC.
That's actually quite frightening. We would have won at least 2 of those games without the pick 6's .. and might have beaten the Falcons.

That's funny. Posting those stats make me feel worse about the Shurmur hire, not *better*!
Basically, those stats are saying "Shurmer's offense didn't do as well as Daboll's offense again the same teams."
Not too encouraging. Yes, I know we're months away from the season. We have a draft and training camps to go through. Everyone wants to think positively and NO ONE WANTS Shurmur to fail. That's the part that always gets me- people think that if you say one tiny little thing about the new coach that sounds detrimental, it apparently means you're negative and you see the team as hopeless, etc.--- instead of the REALITY, which is that we are among the most win-starved of fan bases in the league with a team that's been crappy for as long as many of it's fans have been alive!! ... and now, after fielding one awful offense after another over the years, the Browns have hired a guy who's offensive track record in the NFL looks just as poor (if not more so) than the Browns. And yet people think we're all supposed to jump for joy and be oh so happy and completely ignore the fact that the only way this is gonna work out well is if Shurmur's luck/style/methods, etc. do a complete 180 from what they've been so far. It's do-able, but it's a really tall order.
The bottom line is that everyone does want to see Shurmur and the Browns succeed, but cut a little slack to those who might not feel like being rah rah cheerleaders after everything that's happened over the last.. well, since 1964.

Don't forget the bums they played:
ARZ OAK WASH SEA DET SD TB CAR SF ATL ARI DEN KC SF SEA
Playing teams like SF and SEA twice - as compared to playing PIT and BALT twice?? The Rams played a soft schedule and still choked against a bad team to miss the playoffs.

True ... but the rams are a team with a rookie Quarterback that had only won a total of 6 games in the previous 3 years. And you can't discount the fact the Qwest field ALSO was playing to get in the playoffs ... would you have trusted *(not exactly the same but you know) Colt to have to win the last game of the year at Cincinnati in order for us to clinch or Cincy would clinch? That's a playoff environment and not a bad way to go down either ..
