It really is a no brainer for Musgrave- even if everything is equal and he could call his own plays in Cleveland. The vikes have more offensive fire power- if they can find a QB. Peterson and Harvin are two explosive weapons that the browns just do not have to entice a coordinator. If the browns want him, they will have to open up the checkbook.....

Minn has adrian peterson and a defensive head coach. He will have full control of the offense there and that is a big seller.

Why did i just get a sinking feeling that we are going to talk to Childress. He's WCO out of the Andy Reed via Holmgren tree. Yikes.

this just keeps getting funnier...best believe calling the plays had almost everything to do with it...why hire an OC if your not going to let him call plays?

Well Mac....I think it might be past plan B.
Shurmers first misstep was saying he was going to call plays.
That right out of the box gives every other team a advantage in selecting the guy they really want.
The quality candidates aren't going to want that...only those desperate will see that as a good working relationship.

I agree.
not that i am against the coach calling plays, but we better just forget about a coordinator.
From a career standpoint, a OC who isn't calling plays isn't going to generate much interest for the next position....head coach.
This is egg on the face any way you spin it...
Does anybody know....did Holmgren have a OC or was Haskell his special assistant who more or less handled the role??
Homie called his own plays.....maybe we need to forget having a OC for a while and just look for some help.

Seems like most of the guys from the WCO that came through the O side of the ball seem to call their own plays.

Considering the plan is to groom an OC.
The Musgrave plan was doomed to fail.
If that is indeed the plan, then I wouldn't phrase it a misstep, because any Candidate is going to want to know what their job would in tale. Musgrave still took the interview. One has to wonder if it was not for greater leverage with the Vikings.
It's debatable that in business/sales, honesty is the best policy, but I think it is a must with any relationship.
The way I see it is we already have our OC at least to start with so why does this vacancy necessarily have to go to a big name former OC?

Peen...So you believe Musgrave was just gonna take the job without asking about who was going to do the play calling?
If Shurmur is going to do the play calling, why do we need an established OC who calls his own plays?
If Shurmur is going to call the plays, the best fit would be a QB coach looking to learn more about the offense...someone to help Shurmur...an understudy.
Looking at Sean Peyton of the Saints, he calls his own plays...he has an OC with a background as a OL in college and TE,WR, QB/passing game coach in the Pros. The next logical move for this individual is to OC, where he will be for a few years learning to be an OC.
But...if Shurmur's plan it to eventually give up the play calling duties to a qualified OC, then he would want someone highly qualified as a OC, capable of calling the plays, at some point in the future.
We are "assuming" that Musgrave passed on the Browns over the issue of play calling...but we have no idea if that had anything to do with his reason for taking the Vikes job.
It could be that Musgrave simply used the Browns to get the best dollar deal from the Vikes that he could.
Plan B is next...

No Mac, that isn't what I believe.
To carry on with your point, why even interview a guy like him if all you are looking for is a QB coach to groom??
Why even interview for a OC in the first place if grooming someone is the intent???
I think you mentioned being up front and honest.

Actually I don't think that's a big a Yikes as you make it. IIRC Childress was the OC of the eagles the years Andy Reid was calling plays so he would be familiar with that setup. His offense with Farve the first year was pretty darn good although I thought he tended to pass too much considering they had AP.

Wasn't that the problem? Favre kept audibling to passes when runs were called?

This might be our plan B...
Mark Whipple
Mark Whipple (born born April 1, 1957) is an American football coach. He most recently served as offensive coordinator for the University of Miami Hurricanes football team, before new coach Al Golden decided to bring in his own coordinator. He has also previously coached in the National Football League, working as a quarterback coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers and as an offensive assistant coach with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Early life and playing career
Whipple was born in Tarrytown, New York before moving to Phoenix, Arizona at the age of nine. He is a graduate of Camelback High School, where he was an All-State performer in both football and baseball. Whipple was named the Arizona Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1975.
Whipple went on to play football at Brown University, where he was a 1979 graduate with a bachelor’s degree in political science. Whipple was the starting quarterback for the Bears in 1977 and 1978, leading Brown to a 13-5 record and a pair of second-place Ivy League finishes. He was a member of the Bears’ 1976 Ivy League championship team, the first Ivy football championship in school history. During his three-year varsity career, he completed 175 of 340 passes for 2,365 yards and 13 touchdowns, while running for 518 yards and 10 touchdowns. A two-time honorable mention All-Ivy pick in football, Whipple also earned four varsity letters on the baseball diamond as Brown’s starting shortstop. He was inducted into the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996.
Coaching career Whipple began his coaching career as an assistant coach at St. Lawrence University in 1980, before serving as the offensive coordinator at Union College for next two seasons. In 1984, Whipple was hired as an assistant coach at his alma mater (Brown) where he worked with the wide receivers. The following season, Whipple spent as a member of the coaching staff for the USFL's Arizona Wranglers under George Allen, assisting with the quarterbacks.
Whipple served as the offensive coordinator at the University of New Hampshire for two years before receiving his first head coaching opportunity, as the new head coach of the University of New Haven Chargers in 1988. While at New Haven, his 1992 squad finished 12-1 and ranked No. 5 nationally. The team led all NCAA divisions in scoring offense (50.5 points per game) and total offense (587.7 yards per game). His 1993 New Haven team was named Sports Illustrated’s “Best Offense in College Football” while averaging 52.5 points and 557.6 yards of total offense per game. His 1993 squad ranked as high as No. 2 nationally.
In 1994, he was hired by his alma mater to serve as head coach of the Brown University Bears, where he spent the next four seasons. While at Brown, his 1997 squad set Ivy League and school records for total offense (474.3 yards per game) which included a single-game record of 629 yards against Yale. His 1995 team set several single-season records including most points (282), total offense (4,165 yards), passing offense (2,502 yards) and first downs (227).
The highlight of his college career was coaching Division I-AA University of Massachusetts, where he posted a record of 49–25 with two conference championships. He was coach of UMass from 1998-2003 and won the NCAA Division I-AA national title in his first season at the school. His UMass teams rewrote the record books, setting more than 40 team records. In 1998 his national championship team posted school records in points scored (524), touchdowns (73), total yards (7,074), passing yards (4,050), completions (306) and first downs (354).
Whipple left college football for a position as an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL in 2004 where he was instrumental in the development of Ben Roethlisberger, who in his rookie season became the first NFL quarterback to finish a season undefeated with a 13-0 record in games he started. Roethlisberger later became the youngest starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl. On January 25, 2007, Whipple was let go by new Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and replaced with Ken Anderson. The next day, Whipple was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles.
On January 7, 2009, Whipple was named the University of Miami Hurricanes football team offensive coordinator. Whipple was fired along with head coach Randy Shannon, following the end of the season loss to South Florida on November 27, 2010.

It is actually a very interesting idea ... if Childress came here soley to help "setup" the offense and make it all the easier of a transition for Shumur ... I guess I'd be for it. The point is to have success with the head coach and the whole team and not necessarily get a flashy named pick for a coordinator. If that means we have a coordinator who wasn't great at being a head coach but is still pretty good at being a coordinator .. it shouldn't be a problem.

Its hard to say we screwed up considering we have no idea whether or not he was even our leading candidate for the position.
If we hire another group of rejects like the last go around then I will say we royally screwed up. I am still hopeful that we can put together a very strong staff.

this is a big YIKES!!!! He is so conservative, play not to lose, keep it close and win it in the 4th kind of guy. That is chili ball in a nutshell. Oh, wait a minute, we would be used to that.

peen...we screwed up?
The reality is, teams do not always get the first person they interview for a job especially if the individual is in demand, being pursued by more than one team. At that point, the odds are 50-50 at best.
A sports media source runs with a story indicating Musgrave is going to take the Browns job BEFORE he has even interviewed with the Vikings job and many Browns fans jump the gun and assume Musgrave is automatically the Browns new OC...they were WRONG!
For whatever the reason, Musgrave took the Vikings job..it was his choice..that does not mean the Browns screwed up.
Think about this...the Vikings HC is Leslie Frazier who is from the defensive side of the ball. Musgrave takes the Vikings job and he knows, he is the guy leading the offense.
With the Browns, Shurmur is from the offensive side of the ball and any OC taking the job here, knows Shurmur is going be overseeing the offense. That is not going to change, regardless because we have an offensive minded coach.
I don't blame Musgrave for taking the Vikings job and it's not a huge loss for the Browns because we have a HC who is capable and willing to call the plays. Now we have to find the right OC, willing to work under those circumstances...and we will.
Peen...no ones fault, no one screwed up and the sky is not falling.

Great points ... don't forget .. how much does the national media know as well? For all we know Holmy has had 10 different coordinator interviews in the past week, some before he even finalized his coaching staff ... but if they get word that someone is talking to the Browns, they report it as the "leading candidate" even if that guy is number 7 on the list of 10 ...
But don't get me wrong ... Im as hungry for the news as anyone else

2010 was about as bad of a year as one can have with the loss of Danni and nearly lost mom a 3 or 4 times but she just finished her last round of chemo and things are looking better. I am doing ok though. This year will be better.

mac i agree with ya here...
where i think the negativity comes from more stems from the fact that we didnt screw up...but it is a bummer that we wont have him on our staff because he has worked with Matt ryan his entire career and Matt Ryan has been very very good and it would have been of great benefit to Colt NMcCoy to have Musgrave here. Not a mistake...a bummer.
While i think we disagreed on a bunch of things regarding the firing and hiring...you make a lot of good points quite often. im with ya here, and tryin to look at the positive side of having a new coach. That he will oversee the offense is a positive (if he is going to improve it that is)
while im still very skecptical, i think the OC position isnt the most pressing need because our coach will be handling the gameday decisions based on that part of the game.
I do think that we need a great teacher to come in and be OC...thats where we'll succeed, having a teacher. someone who can get his guys ready to execute what Pat is running...if we can find that...we succeed

Whipple emerges as Browns offensive coordinator candidate
Posted by Evan Silva on January 19, 2011, 8:19 PM EST
The Cleveland Browns have been mostly unaggressive in their pursuit of an offensive coordinator, presumably because the organization is already littered with offensive thinkers. Mike Holmgren was an offensive-minded head coach before becoming team president, and Pat Shurmur was an offensive coordinator before Holmgren tabbed him as Browns head coach.
The Browns lost out to the Vikings for Bill Musgrave on Wednesday. Holmgren now appears to have turned his attention to the college ranks.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, former University of Miami (FL) offensive coordinator Mark Whipple has emerged as a candidate for the same position on Shurmur’s staff. Whipple was replaced by ex-Seahawks quarterbacks coach Jedd Fisch after Hurricanes head coach Randy Shannon was let go in favor of Al Golden.
Whipple does offer extensive NFL experience, having coached quarterbacks in Pittsburgh during Ben Roethlisberger’s early years. Whipple was an offensive assistant on Andy Reid’s Eagles staff in 2007 and 2008.

Jim Mora withdraws name from consideration in Denver and Philadelphia
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 19, 2011, 6:18 PM EST
Jim Mora has decided to remove his name from consideration for the defensive coordinator jobs in Denver and Philadelphia.
“While I appreciate the opportunities presented by Denver and Philadelphia, at this time it’s just not the right fit,” Mora told Mike Florio of PFT.
Mora talked with both the Eagles and Broncos, but has decided to stay in broadcasting for the time being.
It was reported Mora was offered the job by both teams. Dick Jauron is one of the candidates in Philadelphia, while it’s unclear who could get the job under John Fox in Denver.

Well .... color me unimpressed. Tremendously unimpressed. Maybe we can have an entire offensive staff made up of only QB coaches? Musgrave would have been a solid addition. This guy ...... meh. Yeah ... I would guess, despite what they will finally say ...... that this has not gone the way they wanted ..... starting with the head coach, and working down from there. Maybe Chachi and Potsie will be next ... get hired .. and they'll say "These are the guys we really wanted all along. Screw the established and talented guys ...... these guys had "it" ....."

Me too. I was excited there for a bit. I think well of Musgrave and quite frankly, I think the Vikes are getting a good one. I'm getting discouraged a bit here.
As I said in another thread I was worried about how it's going to go over with OC candidates that Shurm is going to call the plays "initially" WTF is that? What quality OC candidate is going to go for that?
I fear we will look at Plan B, C, D, E, and finally hire CoachB
Bah.

I hear that Lenny and Squiggy are coming in next week.

i still think Zorn is the front runner, especially with his experience (or lack there of) as a head coach.
