I really don't see a problem.

Here's a link to that.

No surprise. We've known about this for a week.

I have no problems at all with him calling his own plays as most of the WCO offensive minded coaches seem to want to call their own plays but no OC is different. I think you need that competent second in command person to make sure everything is running in order.

Also if u suck, it gives u someone to blame.

It is a big risk for a first time head coach to pile so much on his plate.

But .... it wasn't 2 weeks ago when I said it was.

You were going ape because of nothing more than pure speculation. The speculation turned out to be true but that wasn't the point. It would be the exact same thing as someone saying heckert is an idiot because Mary Kay said the browns might draft a quaterback in the first.

McCarthy calls his own plays and he just won the SB.... let's give this guy a chance

I think what Mourgym was trying to say was

It's not about not calling your own plays, it's about not having an O-Coordinator. If our new QB coach is gonna be the O-Coordinator, then make him the O-Coordinator.

The Packers have an O-Coordinator. The only teams I know without one are the Patriots (I dunno if this is still the case or not), and now the Dallas Cowboys (who hired their O-Coordinator to be their coach, it's not like they're installing a new system).

Plenty of head coaches call their own plays, not many install a new WCO system without the help of an O-Coordinator. It's very unorthodox

I recognize what he was saying and I understand it. The thing is, if the reports are correct, he attempted to hire an OC and couldn't get the one(s) that he wanted. The suggestion that he name someone to that post that he doesn't feel is ready seems a little dumb to me.

This Whipple guy we hired to be QB coach, is it possible Shumur is planning on moving him into that role? Sure it is. and there is something to be said for letting a guy grow into a role.

The other side of that coin is, any OC you put in place is bound to have some tough days ahead installing a new system and not having all the pieces and parts. It's not going to look good. And because of personnel, he may be limited in what can be done during the initial stages.

So, maybe (and it's a HUGE maybe) he's (shumur) trying to absorb the heat for a while.

Still, I'd rather he had an OC, but if he couldn't get the guys he wanted, it's actually smarter to deal with it by himself.

eh, it's semantics. New Orleans has an OC, but cmon, everyone knows Payton is the OC there. Only reason to give someone the title is to make it harder for another team to steal the coach.

I personally think coaching staffs are already pretty bloated with tons of extra spots taken up (quality control inside linebacker coach, etc), so having one less level of hierarchy doesn't really bother me.
