I posted this in the Asst Coaches thread but thought it could use it's own thread. If not, feel free to delete mods.

I'd take him as HC over Shurmur. I'd take him as DC over Jauron.

He could have been the next guy to get fired from Cleveland.

Oh well...

graf...But you are not Holmgren...

Honestly, I believe Fisher is burned out...time for him to take a break from coaching.

I love Jeff Fisher's style and as a HC. Dang.

Bud Adams did him NO favors if he did want to coach next year (college or pros).

A little late on this one. Reminds me of when Gruden was fired a couple of years ago.

I wouldn't be surprised to see another team fire their coach if they know they can get Fisher.

Otherwise, there are no openings for him right now. I could definitely see him sitting out a year or two a la Gruden, Cowher.

On the other hand, there is now another head coaching spot open.

Also, not that I care, but now what happens to Vince Young?

If I could hire Fisher, I fire Shurmer today....or make him the qb/oc coach.

Adams is a senile old bitch who held off on this point until teams hired their coach.

Jeff Fisher is a damn good coach.

This, but I'm sure Holmgren is so full of himself, that he is okay w/ the Shurmur pick.

I think Fisher is a good coach. But his record is not as good as people think.

He definitely got Gruden'd. They wanted to make sure he couldn't show them up this year.

I wonder which network he'll join or will he try his hand in college?

yup...thats the rumors im seeing as well

Mark my words if Mangini goes to Tenn he will be a successful coach...they have an owner that will give Mangini more then "two measly years" to do something

Mangini will make them a solid team all around, he will add a few more pieces and they will actually do something in a year or two...remember..Mangini has experience under Bellichik runnign Defenses to keep his teams in games against Manning....if the titans do hire him...i could see the titans becoming the top team in that division in the next 2-3 years.

regardless, us firing Mangini will go down as one of the many mistakes of this franchise....no one liked Bellichik either but look what he has done....

we finally had the "right coach" here...and we fired him...Mangini was building a modern version of the Parcells NY Giants right here in cleveland and we blew it...

I hope Shurmur works out, i do because were stuck with him....but there are no guarantees...im not even sure if the WCO will work in this division....the Seahawks O didn't look too hot against the Steelers in the Super Bowl...and the Cardinals don't run the WCO they run more of a downfield passing attack

the Super Bowl will be telling because we will see first hand if the WCO can be successful in this division because the Packers have the "optimal personnel" to run that system...if the Steelers shut them down....it doesn't bode well for our success running that system in this division...

That's not entirerly true, while the Packers have been servicable with thier RB's this yr., they have not had that QUALITY RB that most successfull West Coast Offensive units have. Hillis is the perfect RB for this system, imagine the Packers if they had Hillis in the backfield........scary........

Yea.. not to mention we play the Titans @ home next season.. that would be weird. Knowing Gini though he would trade Chris Johnson b/c he likes 240lb guys who get tough yards...

I think that there will be a lot of options next year for Fisher.

He might even hit New York if the Jets or Giants crash and burn next year.

Coach Jeff Fisher and the Tennessee Titans are parting ways after 16 seasons.

The team released a one-sentence statement confirming a report on Sports Illustrated’s website: “The Tennessee Titans and Jeff Fisher have agreed to part ways and Fisher will no longer be the head coach of the team.”

There are indications Mike Munchak, who has been Titans offensive line coach for the past 14 seasons, could be the replacement on an interim or full-time basis.

Fisher was the icon of the franchise, a constant from its final two seasons in Houston to the past 14 in Nashville.

Although the Titans opted not to extend his contract after a 6-10 finish to the 2010 season, on Jan. 7 they announced their intention to keep him for the final year of the deal he signed in 2007.

Fisher even spent the past few days searching for new coaches after staffing moves that included the firing of defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil.

Things changed Thursday, however.

There are indications Fisher felt the deck was stacked against him in trying to turn the Titans around in a lame-duck situation. Yet the front office was also frustrated with Fisher’s pace in replacing Cecil and defensive line coach Jim Washburn, who left to take a job with the Eagles.

So the team and coach decided to part ways, with Fisher receiving a buyout of approximately $8 million. Fisher was to make $6.5 million in the final year of his contract.

The Titans said there would be a press conference Friday.

Fisher could not be reached for comment, and efforts to reach Titans Executive Vice President Steve Underwood and General Manager Mike Reinfeldt were also unsuccessful.

Reached before the report was confirmed, Titans owner Bud Adams said: “Where did you hear that? I better check on that. I can’t talk about it now. I have to talk to my people there. I haven’t talked to them today. I really can’t talk about it now because I don’t know what’s been said. I want to see what is going on.’’

Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger said he left the office at 3:30 and had not talked to Fisher.

“I would have stayed around,” he said. “I don’t know anything about it. … I tried to leave him a message but his voicemail was full. I don't have a reaction because I don't know what I'm reacting to yet.”

On Jan. 7, just two days after announcing plans to part ways with quarterback Vince Young, the Titans announced plans to keep Fisher.

In a statement released by the Titans that day, Adams said:

“I appreciate all of our fans’ patience over the last week while I deliberated on the immediate future of the football team. I have informed our senior management that Jeff Fisher will be our head coach next season. Jeff has meant a great deal to this franchise and we have reached some incredible heights under his leadership. Obviously, I have very high expectations for our football team and want to deliver a championship to our fans. Jeff understands this and shares my expectations. The results of his leadership have been some very good football teams and I believe he will get us back to an elite level.”

Fisher’s record with the Titans is 147-126 including postseason. His 147 wins — including postseason — ranks him third among active coaches in career wins behind Bill Belichick (177) and Mike Shanahan (160).

Yet Fisher is also just 5-6 in the playoffs and hasn’t coached a playoff win since the 2003 season. His teams also lost at least six games in back-to-back seasons, and posted five-game losing streaks in five of the last several seasons.

Tennessean.com will continue to update this breaking news story.

possibly, but don't write off Starks just yet...i think the Packers finally found their Dorsey Levens/Ahman Green RB in Starks...it just took them awhile to find the kid....he looks like the real deal and has played well in the postseason "when it counts" which is the true guage of a Rb ability.

I think Starks is the Rb they been missing all year...and they finally found him...

the WCO uses the pass to open up the run...they don't run to open the pass....Andy Reid's Eagles are an example of this...they pass 2 times for every 1 time they run the ball.

as i said this current Packers team has the "best personnel" of any WCO team to reach the Super Bowl since the 97 Packers....The Seahawks may have a slightly better RB, but its not even a contest that Rogers is head shoulders better then Hasselbeck was in 05

as i said..if the Steelers D runs this team over and shuts them down....were in trouble...i have my doubts the WCO will work in this division....because its too finesse....its based on timing...and short passing routes play right into the hands of the Steelers Defense which plays close to the LOS at all times...

if you look at the teams that have had success against the Steelers (Brady and the Pats, Manning and the Colts, Rivers and the Chargers) they beat the Steelers by throwing the ball deep down field...hitting the 25-35 yard passes across the middle and the drag routes..

I don't see the 5 yard pass(with YAC) working very often against them...the Steelers don't play soft cushiosn, their speed at LB is unheard of only matched by the Ravens in the entire league, and would not be surprised if the Packers struggle big time...i hope they win i hate the Steelers....but im not sold on the WCO working in the AFC North

the short passing game close to the LOS (the WCo Bread and Butter) is playing right into the Steelers hands...if you want to beat the Steelers you have to beat them deep a few times...the WCO is not centered on the deep passing game...

I have my doubts, hopefully Shurmur and Holmgren figure something out...because frankly im tired of losing...but im not so sure this will work in this division....not with the way the Steleers and Ravens play close to the LOS and challenge every play....the short passing of the WCO plays right into the Steelers and Raven's hands....im just not sure its going to work.

you have to throw over the top to beat those guys, and the WCO is not known for throwing downfield...

I really hope he get's hired because he will definately want to bring in a few of his guy's. The only problem is that he won't have near the power he did here to pull off some boneheaded trades.

Exactly. Mangini did rid us of some cancers in the lockerroom, but I give more credit to Heckert than Mangini for laying a good foundation. Unless some people think Trusnick, Barton, Bowens, and Coleman are part of our foundation.

To get back to the Titans .....

Here's something really weird.

Their starting secondary had over 400 tackles last year. That's a TON. Their secondary as a whole had almost 500 tackles.

I have mixed feelings about Jeff Fisher. On the one hand, he's only made the playoffs 6 times in 16 years, finishing .500 or below the other 10 seasons. On the other hand, he's done it without having a surefire franchise quarterback (McNair was up and down) and he's been able to rebuild the Titans for a few different decent runs.

All in all, I think he's a good coach, but I don't understand why he's often spoken about in the same breath as Super Bowl winners like Holmgren and Cowher. He'll definitely get a job somewhere, though, that's for sure.

Too bad they this didn't happen three weeks ago.
I would have taken Fisher in a New York minute, he's a good coach and a man of integrity.
Word among Titans fans is Bud Adams is a cheapskate and didn't always give Fishers the best scenario for consistent winning.

edit: mind you, I don't think he would have coached in Cleveland because he'll want more control than Holmgren would be willing to give him, but it was nice to think about...

If I follow correctly, we're saying the secondary is a bunch of good tacklers & their front seven ain't all that,....?

I mean, I don't want my secondary having those kinds of stats.

Elam, Coleman, and a 7th round pick straight up for Chris Johnson and Kenny Britt?

It would be interesting to see if Mangini does end up in Tenn. Though it would be hard sell to fans, are there any coaches that would take the Tennesee job? Gruden and Cowher sound like they're happy where they are right now.

Plus, he's got the nuts to sport that 1970s adult film actor Moooostache.

Now that's a coach.

Fisher >>> Mooostache
Shurmur >>>> Nothing

you do the math.

What I'm saying is that it appears that the 7 guys playing in front of them must not tackle at all. lol

I would guess that the Titans go defensive minded coach as that would best fit the team's needs, and lack of a top flight QB right now.
