Pat Shurmur won't have an offensive coordinator in his first season as the Cleveland Browns' coach.

AFC North blog
ESPN.com's James Walker writes about all things AFC North in his division blog.

• Blog network: NFL Nation

Former University of Miami offensive coordinator Mark Whipple agreed Monday morning to become the Cleveland Browns quarterbacks coach, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Shurmur said when he was hired that he would call the Browns' offensive plays next season. With Shurmur's background (he was the St. Louis Rams' offensive coordinator last season) and with Whipple's play-calling experience, Cleveland does not think it will need an offensive coordinator.

The hiring caps a tumultuous offseason for Whipple, the former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacks coach who left Miami, nearly became UConn's coach and now is taking a job in Cleveland.

Shurmur hired former Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills coach Dick Jauron as his defensive coordinator earlier this month.

Umm ..... yeah ..... so ........

I do not see this as any kind of positive whatsoever. Those who do please tell me why you do so I can try to convince myself.

Ok, Ytown, just for you, but it's hard.

1. Haskell and Holmgren are our real OC anyway?

2. Whipple is obviously a guy that is good to have on the staff seeing as he was in line for HC opportunities despite being on a staff that was replaced people respect his coaching abilities.

3. Shurmur is going to just let Jauron handle the defense and stay hands-off there (no idea if that will be negative/positive, but it 'could' end up being a positive, so I'll put it here)

This coaching staff is rapidly turning into a punch line. Our first time HC will run double duty as HC and OC (apparently since no legit OC wants Shurmer micro managing him). Most our candidates for the OC and DC jobs passed because they don't have any faith in what's being "built" (stacking shovel after shovel of crap on top of each other doesn't really mean you're building anything, but let's all have blind faith in Holmgren )

CBA problems that will effectively stall offseason planning and progress until the CBA is resolved (expect August if things go well) and a tear down and rebuild of the D.....

To be fair, I have been extrememly happy with what Holmgren did with the FO, particulary in getting Heckert on board; but, I've been just as disgusted with his "puppet coach" project. All the wrong decisions at the wrong times.

I can't remember an offseason that felt so helpless....

Are you sure? Do we have a HC a DC and no OC.. or do we have an OC and a DC and Haskell and Holmgren are really the HC?

Regardless, I'm not real fond of this route. Being a first time HC has to be a full time job without adding in the playcalling and OC duties as well.

I'll give it a shot...

"The Patriots didn't have an offensive coordinator this year and they did pretty well."

Feel better yet?

Seriously, I fail to see how anyone is going to spin this as a good thing. If we weren't the laughingstock of the league with our HC hire, we certainly will be if we have no offensive coordinator.

I might if we had Bill Belichick as head coach and Tom Brady for our QB.

Yup, it didn't get much traction when I postulated the very same a week or two ago, either. And I think 'Peen even said much the same just prior to that.

Weird.

First off, I haven't read any of the other posts yet.

I am wondering why it makes me feel like this isn't the way to do it BUT, if they had just told me Whipple was the OC AND QB coach, I would feel ok about it. Don't know why I feel that way, just do . . .

Can anyone shed light on the success (or lack there of...) of other teams that run or have run their offenses like this? Is it a rarity? Happen often? I have no clue . . .

It is very rare.

The offensive coordinator does all of the preparation work during the week. he creates the offfensive gameplan, puts in team specific plays, runs the offensive practices, and so on.

If Shurmur was going to call his own plays, that's one thing. This is something else entirely.

I am stunned, and incredibly worried about what we're going to see on the field next year.

Has anyone actually seen it confirmed that we aren't going to have an offensive coordinator?

I just went back and read all of the articles and posts on it and everyone I came across said something along the lines of ... "being interpreted as....will not have an offensive coordinator"

If it's just speculation then we could have given the title to Whipple or someone else entirely anyway.

Weren't we looking to get a QB coach for the non-play-calling OC role? Maybe this guy will be QB coach AND co-ordinator, or at least Assistant OC.

We still got Holmgren and hopefully another good draft coming.

Is no OC at all better than Daboll?

Whipple is an accomplished QB Coach and the last I knew.
We did not have one before today.
So regardless of a lack of an OC.
I think he is a good hire.

Welcome aboard Gator.

It could be speculation ..... but in all honesty, there has been nothing to inspire the slightest bit of confidence in the way this coaching staff is being set up.

I am extremely worried. I see this turning into a gigantic mess, with Holmgren being so sure of his abilities that he tries to outsmart everyone, and creates something that simply cannot work.

I seriously feel ill just thinking about this.

It is still very possible that Whipple was hired as QB coach and Clemente is being looked at as the OC.

Green Bay wouldn't let us talk to Clemente unless it was a promotional opportunity. The fog should lift by the middle of next week, lets not get all down on the hires just yet.

I hope you're right.

Clements would be my preferred choice for offensive coordinator out of the remaining available candidates ..... so that probably means that he's coming nowhere near Cleveland. lol

I gotta say, more and more you are sounding hopeless....

Not that YOU are hopeless, but I still maintain that we as fans only hear probably 50% of what the media actually hears, and then they only hear a % of what is actually going on in the draft.

I think that too many people are starting to think that just because the media reports something, that it is truth. We had a couple people rumored to be coming in for interviews, and then all of a sudden we were upset that they suddenly backed out.

WE DONT even know that our coaches wanted them as coordinators or that they took us seriously ... and could have just been using us in a bidding war for their intended job.

We also might have brought in 15 candidates for every hire, but just because the media only reported on a few it seems like we are getting "horrible" candidates ... but what if these candidates we are settling on are actually the best fits for our job?

I just think too many people are raising up the white flag on our staff when we don't even have know all of the details of who we actually brought in or actually even wanted, let alone an official staff yet.

I see no reason to think that our team inspires anything but confidence. And I don't get why a few people aren't even letting them move into their offices before going all chicken-little ....

As a fan, I think a positive will be that we don't have to wonder who's game plan is suceeding or not.

Last year, I wanted to kill Daboll on occasion, but I didn't know if it was truly him or not in terms of philosophy.

This year whether it's good, bad, or indifferent, it's completely on Shurmur's shoulders.

I guess I'll approach this as I do the rest of the coaching hires.

Why get upset? At the same time, why get too excited (though not many people are)?

It is what it is. I can't control it, and it's not fun to be PO'd about it. So, I'll just wait and see.

I'm doing my best to stay positive.. But it's getting a little harder with each passing day.

Obviously, I have no choice but to accept this cause yelling about it won't do a lick of good.

Maybe it's just that I've not seen this set up before. I suppose it could work. we do have Haskell on board and Whipple is supposed to be solid (I don't know that for sure)

Couple that with Shumur saying he's calling his own plays this year, whats the difference if a guy has the title OC or not..

Under those circumstances, an OC would be an empty title anyway.

Again, not sure I like this but I can't do a damn thing about it. It is what it is.

But I can't help feeling as if we are getting the "Second best" of everything.. Not sure you can win with that.

Obviously, as most have said, I don't think it's a good thing to have no offensive coordinator.

And as someone else mentioned, why not just name Whipple QB Coach/OC?

Anyway, hopefully the report isn't true.

With all that said, I think Whipple is a pretty good hire as QB coach. He was a successful lower level college head coach with explosive offenses. And he was Roethlisberger's QB coach his first few years in the league (2004-2006).

Also, is it that bad to have Haskell.Holmgren helping out with the offense?

Lost in all the Whipple news...

Quote:

The hiring of Davis represents a homecoming for the defensive assistant, who was born and raised in Youngstown and is the son of Bill Davis, the former Browns vice president of player personnel.

Davis was linebackers coach of the Browns in 1999 under Chris Palmer. He's been an assistant for 19 seasons with eight different teams, including the Steelers, Panthers, Packers, Falcons, Giants and 49ers..

In 2009 as Cardinals defensive coordinator, Arizona was fifth-best in points allowed. But in 2010, the team slipped to third-worst in that category. Davis was fired by head coach Ken Whisenhunt, who was on the Browns staff with him in 1999 as special teams coach.

Seems like a good hire.

No ...... and yes.

It's a really fine line for Holmgren/Haskell to walk between "helping", and making the head coach look weak and ineffectual.

If the team perceives Shurmur as a weak head coach as a result, he's done before he starts.

Disclaimer: I'm not saying that is definitely what will happen, only that it is a danger. I don't want anyone going haywire here ......

A rose by any other name....

Strikes me that Whipple and Shurmur will tag team the offense- with whipple helping in gameplan creation but Shurmur making gameday calls. They get away with this by having Jauron on the D-side, being very experienced and more or less self sufficient.

It's more like we have an OC and a DC and no head coach. Will it work? Who knows.

This. Id go a step further and say, nothing is certain until the full staff is introduced in a press conference.

Here's Whipple's bio from the University of Miami Website:

Quote:

Mark Whipple is in his second season as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Miami. He was named to his position on January 24, 2009.

A veteran of 28 seasons as a coach on both the collegiate and professional levels, Whipple guided an explosive Hurricanes' offense to its best season since the national title contending 2002 team. Miami's offense put up 5,199 yards - becoming just the eighth team in school history to eclipse the 5,000 yard mark in total yards gained. Under Whipple's tutelage, quarterback Jacory Harris totaled the second-most pass completions (249), fourth-most passing yards (3,352) and sixth-most touchdowns (24) in a single season at Miami.

Whipple spent the 2008 season as an offensive assistant coach with the Philadelphia Eagles, helping the team to an appearance in the NFC championship game. Before joining the Eagles, he served as the quarterbacks coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2004-06 where he was instrumental in the development of Ben Roethlisberger, who became the youngest starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl as a rookie. In 2004, Roethlisberger became the first NFL quarterback to finish a season undefeated with a 13-0 record in games he started.

Prior to his move to the NFL, Whipple spent 16 seasons as a head coach at the collegiate level compiling an overall record of 121-59 (.672) with stops at the University of Massachusetts, Brown and New Haven.

While at UMass, he posted a 49-26 (.653) record in six years (1998-2003) leading the Minutemen to a Division I-AA National Championship in his first season with the team in 1998, posting a school record 12 wins. He also won a pair of conference championships. He was named National Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association and Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette in 1998 and earned Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honors in 2003. He was selected as the New England Coach of the Year by the New England Football Writers and the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston in both 1998 and 2003. He posted five winning seasons in only six years as head coach, with nine different players earning first team All-America honors.

Whipple also served as a head coach at his alma mater Brown from 1994-97, where he accumulated a 24-16 (.600) record without a losing season. He also was the head coach at New Haven from 1988-93 where he went an impressive 48-17 (.738) and led the team to back-to-back NCAA Division II playoff appearances in 1992 and 1993. His 1992 team finished 12-1 and ranked No. 5 nationally, while his 1993 squad ranked as high as No. 2 nationally.

At every stop in college, the trademark of a Whipple-coached team was a high-powered offense. His UMass teams rewrote the record books, setting more than 40 team records. In 1998, his national championship team posted school records in points scored (524), touchdowns (73), total yards (7,074), passing yards (4,050), completions (306) and first downs (354). While at Brown, his 1997 squad set Ivy League and school records for total offense (474.3 yards per game), which included a single-game record of 629 yards against Yale. His 1995 team set several single-season records, including most points (282), total offense (4,165 yards), passing offense (2,502 yards) and first downs (227). At New Haven, his 1992 squad led all NCAA divisions in scoring offense (50.5 points per game) and total offense (587.7 yards per game). His 1993 New Haven team was named Sports Illustrated's "Best Offense in College Football", averaging 52.5 points and 557.6 yards of total offense per game.

The Tarrytown, N.Y., native's coaching career began in 1980 as an assistant at St. Lawrence University. Whipple made four more stops over the next seven years (Union College, 1981-82; Brown, 1983; Arizona Wranglers of the USFL, 1984; New Hampshire, 1986-87) before landing his first head coaching appointment.

A 1979 graduate of Brown, he was the Bears starting quarterback from 1977-78, leading the team to a 13-5 record as a starter. He was inducted into the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996. Whipple earned a bachelor's degree in political science. He was a member of the school's first-ever Ivy League championship team in 1976. He was also a four-year letterman on the Bears baseball team.

He and his wife, Brenda, have two sons, Spencer, a quarterback on the UMass football team, and Austin, a high school sophomore.

It is what it is. I can't control it, and it's not fun to be PO'd about it. So, I'll just wait and see.

Oh c'mon! Are you pusing patience and level-headedness on this board?!?!?

Won't be able to critique this thing until next time this year...

Seems this is the only way to approach the hiring of coaches and their responsibilities as of now.

Maybe Shurmer has a better method of approaching offense. Maybe that's what impressed Holmgren in the interview. The traditional ways of previous Browns regimes haven't worked at all. Perhaps a different approach is needed. Can the Browns be any worse than their offense under the creatively challenged Brian Daboll?

In any case, getting better talent on the field and more depth on the bench is going to make the offense go. Hiring coaches is big, big news when a team is losing year after year IMO.

1. Haskell and Holmgren are our real OC anyway?

Are you sure? Do we have a HC a DC and no OC.. or do we have an OC and a DC and Haskell and Holmgren are really the HC?

Regardless, I'm not real fond of this route. Being a first time HC has to be a full time job without adding in the play calling and OC duties as well.

Maybe they couldn't find an OC that was "on the same page."
