If (I said IF ) we don't land a WR in the first 2 or 3 rounds . . .
Austin Pettis: Wide Receiver, Boise St.
Height: 6-3 / Weight: 201 / 40-Time: 4.64
Strengths: • Excellent height and bulk with long arms • Smooth with terrific natural athleticism • Nice leaping ability and good body control • Reliable hands and superb concentration • Great ball skills and plucks ball out of air • Ability to do some damage after the catch • Smart with good instincts and awareness • Is strong, tough, physical and aggressive • Competitive and steps up in big situations • Very productive, durable and experienced
Weaknesses: • Lacks top speed, acceleration and quickness • May struggle to get separation in the pros • Is still not a very polished route runner • Not a deep threat and won't stretch field • Should do a much better job as a blocker • Isn't going to contribute as a return man
Though teammate Titus Young may be the better NFL prospect, Austin Pettis is neck and neck with him. Recruited the same year as Young, Austin Pettis was incredible under the radar due to his lack of speed and quickly chose Boise when they came calling. It has turned out to be a tremendous decision as he has been a superb college player. Though he needs a lot more improvement than Young (specifically in his effort and route running,) he is a big target standing at 6’3 and could find a red zone role in an offense. If he can show off speed in the offseason, perhaps Pettis can find his way into the 3rd or 4th round. He continued to prove his skills in the Las Vegas Bowl with 12 catches for 147 yards and a touchdown. He continued to play physical and be a consistent red zone threat. There is hope out there he can turn into a Sidney Rice type of player, but likely is more of a Brian Hartline type of player.
Was a three-year starter for the Broncos --- Named 1st Team All-WAC in both 2009 and 2010 --- Holds the Boise State all-time records for receptions and touchdowns catches as well as the single-season touchdown reception mark --- Also served as the holder on special teams, has blocked a punt and even threw for a couple of touchdowns during college career --- Missed some action in 2009 with a broken ankle, which required surgery to repair --- Uncle is former major league baseball player Gary Pettis --- Basketball was first love in high school but knee injuries turned him towards the gridiron --- A versatile pass catcher who is a real terror in the red zone --- Prototypical possession target who will probably profile as more of a backup at the next level.
Quote: I am an OSU homer but I usually don't pimp my guys except this one:
Dane Sanzenbacher. Gamer that I see as a Wes Welker type of guy. Makes plays all the time. Very tough. Projected as a 7th rounder. He's a guy that would do anything you asked of him and more (go over the middle and play special teams). Fans would love him.
5'11" 182 lbs 4.58
Get him!!
Chinchilla...I believe you have Sanzenbacher pegged, comparing him to Welker. All he does is catch passes and especially in tough situations.
Also, got to love him for this spoof of "The Decision" ...and for a very good cause, I would like to add.
708 Attempts for 4,181 yards with a 5.9 YPC average and a longest run of 68 yards. Had 37 rushing TD's.
-- 63 receptions for 519 yards, with a 8.2 yard average per reception and a longest reception of 47 yards. Had 2 Receiving TD's
--(39) Total TD's in 4 years.
Kendal Hunter looks good but the problem the Browns have...he is projected to go in the 2nd or 3rd round and I seriously doubt the Browns can afford to spend those picks on a RB.
He looks to have good instincts, running to daylight...
Yeah, that's why I said his stock was high, but if we where to trade down in the 1st and I am not saying that we should/will, but you can never count yourself out of the game until it has been played
I have Hunter in the same Tier as Titus Young 61-70 range.
Whether or not we even sniff a RB will depend on how the FO feels about Hardesty making a solid comeback this year... if they think he's good to go, I'd be very surprised to see us take a RB anwhere in the top 4 rounds.
John Clay, Brandon Saine (awesome hands... could be a westbrook type), Damian Berry, and Vai Taua are all candidates for that depending on what type of back they want to bring in.

Yes... in the perfect world and your prospects all fall where you think that they will. Who's to say that if he is on the board at #70 and is the highest rated prospect on our board and the guys we wanted there are gone?
In a perfect world I probably would not target a RB. It would look something like DE, LB, CB, DT, OT, QB and Kicker
Even with counting Hardesty we still need another RB.
Position is secondary to talent. It's nice to find both, but that doesn't always happen that way.
Kendall Hunter is who I've wanted as our change of pace/ 3rd down / receiving RB all along. He's #77 on my board FWIW so early to mid 3rd round. He's a perfect Hillis compliment for our WCO IMO. BEFORE the move to the 43 I was willing to spend a 3rd rounder to get him. Now? Probably not. But man, if for some reason he happens to fall to us in the 4th (not likely) I'd have to think long and hard about bringing that kid in here.
Quote: no need to draft a 3rd string RB..
This is a need when you don't even have a 2nd string RB! If Hardesty produces anything consider it a Christmas gift, but COUNTING on him for production is nothing short of foolish.
Fear us, for we are the BROWNS, led by the mighty BM! Only in Cleveland.
We know pretty much what our selections are at the moment. Last year we made a move back into the 2nd to draft Hardesty. Who could have predicted that? Now it doesn't have to happen the same way.
My point is that when it is all said and done our selections may not be written in stone as they are and every draft can be full of surprises.
I know we could have used him at the end of the year to spell Hillis.

I'm not even sure it would have been considered giving him a "spell". Hardesty would have gotten used a LOT more IMO if he was healthy.
Obviously, there is no way to know for sure how hardesty would have been used last year, But again, from the little we saw of him in Preseason and vids I've seen of him in College, I have to say, he sure looks like he could be exciting..
If he gets and stays healthy,, we really could have a helluva 1-2 punch.

Well just the same we could have used some help behind Hillis.
Pittsburgh and Baltimore both used 3 RB's last year we only had Hillis.
When I think Browns. I think big and yes sometimes even out of the box.
Why settle for a 1-2 punch when you can have a 1-2-3 punch? One goes down and you still have depth.
Besides who wants an average team When you can have a dream team?

Nice. I really hope they get him. He doesn't drop balls and finds ways to get open. I never did like the Robiskie pick. I would take Sanzenbacher in the 5th to make sure we got him.

Yup,, I agree with that.. more than two is needed anyway.. so draft someone.. or find an LT out there that isn't expected to take the whole load but can offer up some rest for those that do take the load.

I'm not defending Robiskie's body of "work" as a Brown here, but I don't recall anybody, from the people on this board to the so-called experts (or both ) saying they thought Robiskie would be anything but a fine pick in the 2nd round. There were so many friggin' people labelling him the "most NFL ready WR" in that draft.
And I don't see anythign from Sanzenbacher that makes him look any better than Robo did w/ OSU.
All that said, I think he'd be a fine pickup in the mid to later rounds. . .
Quote: It's not that hard to find a 3rd string RB in free agency.
True, but it IS difficult to find a 2nd string RB in FA...you know since we don't currently have one.
I can not stress enough. Don't even consider Hardesty as being on the roster. If he takes magic pills and mysteriously gets healthy then count your lucky stars, but COUNT ON HIM at your own peril.
Fear us, for we are the BROWNS, led by the mighty BM! Only in Cleveland.
The Steelers and Bengals didn't invest much in their backup RBs. The Ravens did trade a boatload for McGahee.
The rest of the league is a mix of low round picks, high picks waiting their turn, veterans who are in varying degrees of a downslide, and so on. It's a pretty wide ranging mix. RB talent comes from a wider spread of the draft (and undrafted free agents) than probably any other position in the NFL.
Bell did catch 20 passes in 2005 ..... so who knows how the team sees him as a combination runner/receiver?
I could see the Browns going with Hillis, Hardesty, Bell, and/or a late round or UDFA speedster at RB, even if they keep Vickers at FB.

He also kinda did what we want our receivers to do next season ...... but wasn't successful doing it.
We want receivers who catch the ball and create yards after the catch. While Stickey was reliable catching the ball, creating yards after the catch was not his strongest point.

Yeah, Stuckey is a master of the 4 yard reception Still he was all we really had in the slot, but we should be able to up grade that position with someone with a little more wiggle and some quicks.
Quote: You're right. He's not a horrible receiver (but if he steps out-of-bounds we win the Jets game) but not a #1 target. He's too small for that.
True,, but that's one game and one play. That doesn't define his career at all..
I"m trying to remember, was it that he was trying for more yards and the D stopped him from getting out of bounds then stripped him of the ball? Wish I could find a vid of that play.

As I remember it, alll he had to do was get out of bounds, but continued to fight for yards,....that left him in the open to be stripped.
Agree,...it was only one play, but that win could have set up the rest of the season for a better run. Of course, "that" means we still have Mangini (I do not have a problem with that,...)
Yes, he was trying to get more yards and was stripped of the ball. He was one step away from the sideline though. They kept him in-bounds and the ball stayed in. We were already in FG range for Dawson.
Greg Salas - WR Hawaii 6'1" 206lbs approx 4.5 speed
Best NFL prospect that I've seen in my 8 years here. I'm convinced that he'll be an effective WR at the next level because he's so physical. He regularly breaks tackles and I don't think we have a WR on our team that fits his profile.
He's going to be drafted on Day 3 because of his 40 time but this guy can play.
He snatches the ball like Winslow. He uses his body to box out DBs. He has enough wheels to play. He'll put a defender on his rump in the running game.
Trust me you guys will love watching this guy play football.
I've posted highlights before. Here are just his 2010 highlights:
I hope the Browns draft him. That means you Tom Heckert!
I don't know much about the guy, as I only watched one Boise St. game last year. But looking at what you posted - slow, and not a good route runner. No thanks.
