If the best FAs are asking so much that it would hamstring us in future years, we gotta let them walk. If we're one or two pieces away from a SB, then fine...but not in the rebuilding that we're in.

If we don't get Steinbach, I can live with it...there's still Dielman and Dockery.

If we don;t get Clements, there's still...well...the draft I guess.

Besides, we do great with UDFA corners...

Just saw this on KFFL.COM
Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to terms on a deal with unrestricted free-agent CB Nate Clements (Bills). He received an eight-year, $80 million deal of which $22 million is guaranteed.
Hate to hear that, but must be true.

$80 million is a lot of cabbage for a cornerback.
Glad Savage didn't spent that much.

As long as there are no hangups, this will be the second straight year the Browns have addressed their offensive line by signing the top free agent .

One guy I didn't realize was a free agent (is he RFA?) is Tully Banta-Cain, LB from NE. He's a guy I certainly wouldn't mind us taking a look at and hoping the Romeo ties help out.

Just clickin

Here's some info and tidbits from NFL.com

Friday, March 2

The 49ers have signed CB Nate Clements to the biggest contract ever given to a defensive player -- eight years, $80 million, including $22 million guaranteed.

Browns have signed OT Eric Steinbach to seven-year contract worth $49.5 million with $17 million guaranteed.

Bills have agreed to terms with guard Derrick Dockery on seven-year deal worth $49 million with $18.5 million guaranteed.

(Note: Last year, Steve Hutchinson deal was worth $49 million for seven years with $16.5 guaranteed. Dockery (guard) matches that, and Steinbach (tackle) just beats it. Both Steinbach and Dockery got more guaranteed money than Hutchinson.)

Also, the Bills and OT Langston Walker have agreed to terms on five-year deal worth approximately $25 million.

Buccaneers have signed free-agent DE Patrick Chukwurah to five-year contract worth $5.5 million with $400,000 guaranteed.

The Falcons have signed FB Ovie Mughelli to a six-year contract worth $18 million, including $5 million guaranteed.

Giants officially sign C Shaun O'Hara.

Free-agent LB Napoleon Harris scheduled to visit the Buccaneers Friday and Chiefs Saturday.

Rams hosted visits with free agents LB Tully Banta-Cain and WR Drew Bennett.

Patriots hosted visits with free agents TE Kyle Brady and RB Sammy Morris.

49ers also played host to free-agents S Michael Lewis.

Browns hosted visit with DE Antwaan Peek.

Redskins hosted visit with free-agent LB London Fletcher. Redskins also scheduled to host visit with CB Fred Smoot today.

Broncos hosted visits with free agents TE Daniel Graham, RB Ahman Green and DE Patrick Kerney, and scheduled to welcome QB Brad Johnson on March 3.

Free-agent RB Dominic Rhodes is scheduled to visit the Giants Friday.

Free-agent G Kris Dielman is scheduled to visit the Seahawks Friday.

Free-agent FB Justin Griffith is scheduled to visit the Bucs Friday.

Free-agent WR Kevin Curtis is scheduled to visit the Vikings Friday and the Lions Saturday.

Free-agent QB Jeff Garcia is scheduled to visit the Raiders Friday.

Free-agent DE Dewayne White scheduled to visit the Lions Friday.

The Jaguars have signed RT Tony Pashos and K Josh Scobee, each to five-year deals. Pashos' deal is for $24 million, including a $9 million signing bonus.
Other news

Quarterback Jake Plummer is expected to retire. The Broncos and Buccaneers had agreed to terms on a trade to send Plummer to Tampa Bay in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick, but the trade would be nullified by Plummer's decision to retire.

Dolphins have released DE Kevin Carter and G Jeno James, the team announced. (Dolphins have yet to release Joey Harrington. His roster bonus is not due until next week, so they have some time.)

The Patriots have released RB Corey Dillon and re-signed RB Heath Evans.

Jets have released QB Patrick Ramsey.

The Lions released TE Marcus Pollard, DT Marcus Bell and DT Tyoka Jackson; The Lions also traded DE James Hall to St. Louis for their second 2007 fifth-round draft choice. Detroit's trade of Dre' Bly to Denver became official.

The Falcons released LB Edgerton Hartwell and LB Ike Reese.

Vikings have released S Tank Williams.

anyone know the latest on Thomas and Dielman? Last I heard Thomas was going with San Fran, and Dielman was in Seattle.

I don't know if San Fran can give Thomas the cash he is looking for after they broke the bank on Clements.

I would love for us to get one of those two guys, preferabley Thomas.

Looks like the Bills have revamped their Oline, they got OG Dockery from the Skins, OG Whittle from the Vikes, and OT Walker from the Raiders all in 1 day.

Latest on Thomas via profootball.com's rumor mill is that he has signed with the Pats. They've been dead on in everything they've posted so far. So it looks like we're not getting Thomas either..

I hope we go after Dielman. How nice would it be to have our interior line as Steinbach, Fraley, and Dielman. Then in 08, maybe move Steinbach to LT, and have our interior be Fraley, Bentley, and Dielman

I don't think he is supposed to actually. I was just reading the Chargers board about it, and no one mentioned Cleveland on there.

Also, someone on there posted that we have been talking to Houston about David Carr, their #8, and their 6th round pick for our #3 and possibly Ken Dorsey.

So, I went to check out the Texans board to get some kind of confirmation on this (which I didn't find), but saw someone on there saying they read that Joey Porter was close to signing with us. So, now I'm off to the Pittsburgh board to check that lol.

Joey Porter would be fantastic....but what from what I read on espn it said that Joey Porter's camp was taking their time and hadn't even schedules any team visits yet...

I don't like the Houston Deal I would want Carr swap firsts and their 3rd or i would offer them a 4th rounder for Carr

All the Steeler board is saying is that they saw on ESPN that the Browns are interested in Porter. Seems like the board over there is split between thinking he'll come to Cleveland and him going to San Fran. But, I don't see San Fran signing him after all the money they've spent today. So, Porter might be a real possiblity.

Add Roderick Hood to my FA wish list. As a Philadelphian, I've seen this guy play a lot: he's not as good as Sheldon Brown or Lito Shepard, the two starting Pro Bowl CBs of the Eagles, but he was a darn good nickle for them. For us, that would translate as a good #2 (AKA better than anyone on our roster except Bodden) and he won't get Clements money (but then, no one in HISTORY ever has ) Banta-Cain and Hood, please!

I wouldn't mind bringing in Hood is the price is right.

I want, in no particular order: Joey Porter, Kris Dielman, and Roderick Hood.

If the Browns sign Porter does that mean the end for McGinnest?

Porter, Willie and Wimbley all make alot of money to play OLB. Stewart and McMillain play OLB. Davis and Jackson start at ILB with Leon Willaims and Chaun Thompson (who has experiance on the outside) as debth. They also have Unck who just plays specail teams.

That would DISGUIST ME!! Doing a deal like that would solidify us going Defense...

Steinbach alone will not make this O-Line a finished product... I wouldn't do that deal unless Houston gave us their 2nd rather than a [censored] ass 6th Rder

The 6th isn't enough....I think it would have to be a 3rd rounder to get that done.

A 2nd might be a bit too much.

The Browns don't really have a need for LB.. we are str8...

Wimbley
Davis
D'Qwell
McGinnest/ Williams/Thompson

Where the Browns need help is on D-line...

Defensive line is far more pressing, but IMO McGinnest is an old veteran stop gap. I wouldn't say our LBs are straight, cause we still need a 3-4 SOLB.

Yes we do need Porter, we need him badly

I love Mcginest, but last year showed he is not an every down player anymore

We should sign Porter, and on 3rd downs, we should do this

Put Porter/Willie at DE with Wimbley behind 1 of them and blitz/rush we could get to the QB mega fast

Porter also lines up some at De for the Steelers, we could put Porter at 1 De and Willie at the other showing more of a 4-3 front on 3rd downs, and having Wimbley line up either behind Willie or Porter and come after the QB..1 of them will come free everytime and we will either get alot of sacks, or alot of incompletions/causing absolute havoc in the backfiled

if we can get Porter,. we would be dumb not to sign him, the guy is a Pro Bowl player with an attitude that he don't put up with losing period..this guy will be a leader here and gets this Defense to play much better because he is a field general and won't put up with teams rushing for 5 yards a carry on us...Porter will have a fit..

we need this guy, he is a personality, an identity, that he is gonna come hit someone, we need that type of identity on this D...a birdie told me Romeo wants Porter "Badly"..don't be suprised if he signs in the next day or 2

I am really torn about Porter.. The guy is a talent but I just don't like his mouth.. I really don't like this guy. I am of the feeling that even if he is on my team I don't think I would like him. I don't know what to think...

Hawks target Chargers OG
Dielman seeking $36M, 6-year deal

By CLARE FARNSWORTH
P-I REPORTER

KIRKLAND -- The Seahawks' wooing of Kris Dielman has begun, and then some.

The free agent offensive guard from the San Diego Chargers flew to Seattle on a private jet Friday, was given a physical and then had dinner with several players -- including quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and Pro Bowl left tackle Walter Jones.

Dielman's visit will continue today, when he tours the team's Kirkland facility and has lunch with coach Mike Holmgren.

It's obvious the Seahawks are serious about signing Dielman to fill the left guard spot that became a sore spot last season after All-Pro Steve Hutchinson left in free agency.

Just as obvious is the club's realization that it will take serious money to get that done.

As if they needed a reminder, former Cincinnati Bengals guard Eric Steinbach signed a seven-year, $49.5 million contract with the Cleveland Browns on Friday, while former Washington Redskins guard Derrick Dockery got a seven-year, $49 million deal from the Buffalo Bills -- exceeding and matching, respectively, the blockbuster deal Hutchinson got from the Minnesota Vikings.

The consensus on Dielman since it became apparent the Chargers would not be able to re-sign him is he will demand an average of more than $6 million on a six-year contract, with roughly $15 million in signing bonus and other guaranteed money. That could escalate, seeing how Dockery got $18.5 million in guaranteed money.

Is any guard worth that?

"That's a great player, a Pro Bowler waiting to happen," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith told the San Diego Union-Tribune. "If Kris is with us I will be one happy guy. If he's not, I'll be extremely disappointed. But I'll be happy for him."

Miami, Cleveland, Atlanta and San Francisco are also said to be interested in Dielman.

Despite the impact his addition would have on the Seahawks offense, which was inconsistent last season, Dielman is not the only player the Seahawks are focusing on in this first, frantic wave of free agency:

Patrick Kerney, a defensive end from the Atlanta Falcons, is scheduled to fly to Seattle today. Kerney missed much of the 2006 season with a torn pectoral muscle, but has 58 career sacks and the type of work ethic coveted by club president Tim Ruskell -- who was with the Falcons in 2004, when Kerney had 13 sacks and went to the Pro Bowl.

Kerney was in Denver on Friday, and the Broncos were expected to make a push to sign him. But Kerney told the Rocky Mountain News, "I'm definitely going to wait and see what Seattle has to offer."

Acknowledging that this likely will be his last contract, he added, "I want to make sure I'm finishing in the right place. I want to see what's out there."

Deon Grant, a free safety from the Jacksonville Jaguars, could visit Sunday. Grant, who will be 28 this month, has 18 career interceptions while starting for the Jaguars (2004-2006) and Carolina Panthers (2001-2003). Ken Hamlin, the Seahawks' starting free safety since being a second-round draft choice in 2003, is an unrestricted free agent and drawing interest from several teams. He is scheduled to make his first visit to New Orleans.

Daniel Graham, a tight end from the New England Patriots, is due in Monday or Tuesday. Graham was in Denver, his hometown, Friday. He is the most complete tight end in this year's free agent class.

Jerramy Stevens, the Seahawks' incumbent starter, is an unrestricted free agent and expected to test the market.

Will Heller, who was an unrestricted free agent, has agreed to a contract and likely will sign it next week. He served as a backup tight end and fullback last season.
