He did a heck of a job on that last lap. When Edwards and Bush? (maybe it was gilliland) came up on Baynes and Bobby........shoved Bobby out of the way I was thinking "come on TB - block'em."
The boy did it!!! Heck of a job driving by him today! They said the Wood Bros. didn't have enough sponsorship for a full season....my guess is TB will be running a couple more races this year than they thought he would.

I was in tears, happy for the Wood crew, happy for Ford.
Probably would not have happened if The Big One hadn't taken out so many of the big boys, Gordon and Johnson specifically. Then Junior went out late too.
Ragan's guffaw should have pretty much handed Stewart the race,...he's a scary guy to have back there in the 2 or 3 hole on the last lap.
If this is anywhere near how I feel when the Browns win the Super Bowl, I will be a total emotional wreck,....hell, just winning the AFC Title Game will be put me in the psych ward.
Thank you Trevor, for hanging in there. I've finally won something !

It's not often you see the guy leading at Daytona with 1 or 2 to go, that he actually ends up winning.
And yea, Ragan screwed the pooch. Listening to him after the race, his comment about "my tires didn't go below the yellow line...." makes me think he doesn't, at least didn't, know what he did wrong.

Yep, the rules clearly prohibit making that lane change before the start/finish line on a restart. Stupid, stupid move. Cannot fathom that with his experience that Stewart didn't pull that rabbit out of his hat,....

Like DW said. "It's like a fairy tail" Congratulations to the youngster. I got to see Jeff Gordon's first win (Coke Cola 500). Incidentally my sons live first race and his guy ever since. This kid is only 20 years old. Trevor Bayne that's pretty amazing.

Only problem was, I don't think Mark Martin had much of a car at the end of the race. Him and the car he was pushing went backwards on the first race restart, and it happened again on the second. I was pulling for Jr and Martin to win, but after hearing that this kid was only in his second race ever, and didn't even have a ride for the season, I was pulling for him. What a story!
I think he even said that he hadn't won a Nationwide race either, so that's a pretty impressive "first win"! I love that they didn't have a wide to interview at the end of the race, so they had to talk to his mom ... I was joking with my Dad that he was probably hitting on the trophy girls (ala Jeff Gordon) looking for a potential wife. Not a second later, they cut to a shot of him chatting it up with the trophy girl.

The kid did a remarkable job and showed maturity beyond his years, for sure. Polite, well spoken and drove a clean race and stayed out of trouble.
Congrats to Trevor and the Wood Bros.
Concerning the race...I didn't like the fact that cars were not racing cars...we had cars pushing cars, not just a little, but all the way around the track.
IMO, that is assisting drivers/cars to achieve speeds they would not be able to achieve on their own.
I have no problem with drafting and the skill required to drive that close without getting into the guy in front. I was happy to see NASCAR put limits on bump drafting last year, especially for safety reasons.
Today was joke when it comes to actual competition racing. We watched tandem NASCAR racing just as sure as we would watch a race of bicycles built for two. The cars were able to reach speeds beyond their capability and to a degree, beyond the limits of safety, which is just plan and simple, stupid on NASCAR's part.
Only about half the cars were running at the end of the race due to all the accidents and blown engines due to overheating from the pushing and the unsafe conditions created by bumper to bumper pushing all the way around the track.
Thank God, no one got killed. Hopefully it won't take another Earnhardt type of moment to wake up NASCAR...to stop them from encouraging this type of driving.
After Dale Earnhardt's death 10 yrs ago, NASCAR made major changes to make it's sport as safe as possible. The record speaks for itself..they have done an excellent job of making such a potentially dangerous sport, as safe as it can be.
What I don't get...if NASCAR thought it was right to limit bump drafting last year...why would they allow one car to push another car, bumper to bumper, all the way around the track, lap after lap...even 3 wide?
Glad that NASCAR is back and that a new guy won the race, but I want to watch racing, car against car...not a pair of cars vs another pair of cars.

Unlike the NFL and MLB, NASCAR is good at recognizing where there are problems and at least attempt to fix them. Hey 'Peen,...TB is a Tennessee boy !

As noted when I said he was from Knoxville.
I suppose there are Knoxville's from other states, and their probably are, but most people equate Knoxville as being in Tennessee.
There is a Chattanooga, Oklahoma, but I trust most associate Chattanooga with Tennessee.

LOL, yes that was a bit odd or excessive, but I think it had to do with the new pavement (black top) and I don't expect that it is a start of a new trend.

LOVED the finish, despite Junior wrecking.
I have the text message to prove me saying to my buddy who's also a race fan "I really like this Trevor Bayne kid" before he won.
I despise the "Dancing With the Cars" plate racing from this week. I much prefer the "hornets nest" from years past where 40 cars run within 3 seconds of each other.
That said, they got really racy with 15 to go and I think had there been no wreck at the end there would have been a great finish without a green-white-checkered. In fact I'm willing to bet Junior would have won it.
That said, I'm thrilled for Bayne and the Wood Brothers. I had a great feeling about this kid as a future star from the moment I saw him speak after qualifying last week. I just thought he'd have a "great run all day only to crash with 10 to go" like many rookies/feel good stories do.
Unbelievable. Historic day!

Not a hero, no. I almost started a Daytona 500/Trevor Bayne thread but I figured I'd better check this one first, just in case, so as to not be duplicative.....the thread title gives you very little in regard to what the thread entails. (obviously)
Anyway.....I was rooting for Bayne to win at the end, just to prevent the 14 from winning. Was not surprised to see the 88 fade, as I have often noted he is not worth a damn as a driver and is only in the game due to his name.
The race itself sucked.......as Mac mentioned the 2X2X2X2X2 packs were not racing. After the big one, I tuned out for awhile and then came back for the last 60 laps. Plate races are BORING.
For those that say Bayne is the next best thing.....please always remember and never forget-----Derrick Cope won the Daytona 500 also.

I think it has more to do with his youth and inexperience. Meaning he was a long shot to win the race and like Gordon did after his first win, he will enjoy instant fame

I was cheering and clapping as he came out of turn 4 to win the race. I was so excited. After my guy (Jeff Gordon - been my guy since the first race I watched in 94) was out of the race, I was cheering for Bayne all the way. I see some great potential for this kid. Just freaks me out - his Mom didn't look like she was even older than me. I also would have been happy with Juan Pablo but that's more for irony's sake (a Columbian winning the "Great American Race")

Yeah, I should have done better than that,....could have said, "NASCAR Has A New Lovable Icon,...."
In using the word "hero," I did not mean to imply Trevor Bayne is our Nation's new Smedley Butler, John P. Bobo, Jimmie Howard, Audie Murphy, Chesty Puller, or Robert J. Miller.
And if he fades into oblivion like Cope did, doesn't mean he wasn't a "sports hero" for a day, or even for the lone second that was his as he crossed that finish line.
Is he NASCAR's next best thing,...hell no. Plenty to prove yet on that count.
There would have to be other one time (and plenty of never) winners of this race besides Cope and Bayne,...I'm thinking that probably Lee Petty heads that list.
There have only been 8 "repeaters."

What where the odds of a rookie/part time driver/team/owner win this past race? The point is that it was pretty amazing and it's going to jump start Trevor Bayne's career. Some pretty good drivers have tried many times to win the Daytona 500 and came up short. So yes, for a day/week he is a hero/king of NASCAR. Quote:

I'd like to give some props to my hometown guy Dave Blaney He ran well for about 190 laps then got screwed over in one of the wrecks. Probably would have finished in the 10-14 region had he made it to the end, I think he ended up 26th. Last year sucked with the run a lap and park it routine - it was nice to have someone in the rodeo this year. Hopefully this can lead to more quality runs out of "The Buckeye Bullet" in the 2011 season. Also congrats to Trevor, and was very happy neither of the whiny pompous Busch boys won.

I'm still digging dirt out of body crevices from too many youthful Sundays at Sharon Speedway,.... Always pull for Dave,...but there's another Ohioan joined the circuit last year,...I think Sam Hornish ? He didn't appear to have made The Show yesterday though. Not sure if he even ran one of the Twin 125's. I also want to correct for the record,...the first three finishers were Fords, not two.

I happen to know about about Sam, as he's my cousin. He spent 3 years in Cup - driving for Penske, with Mobile 1 as the sponsor (about a 3/4 sponsor actually). Mobile 1 wasn't happy, took their sponsorship to Tony Stewart this year. In the mean time, Penske was looking for a new sponsor for Hornish, couldn't fine one.
Booop! Sam's out of his cup ride. Penske did manage to get sponsorship around for the nationwide series for Sam - but as of the start of the season, he was only guaranteed 11 nationwide races for the year. I suppose if he does well, that may increase, but as of now, only 11 nationwide races guaranteed.
He's not in cup this year at all - no races.

I mean absolutely no disrespect by this, but I think Indy is a much better fit for him. It's not a "competition" thing, the cars are just that much different handling-wise.

Last I talked with him was at Christmas - no, he's not considering Indy - although he'd run the Indy 500 if opportunity presented itself. He's got the 11 nationwide races this year - he wants to get back into cup at some point in the future, but if the opportunity doesn't present itself, he'll run nationwide as long as he can - if it's just this year, or if it's for the next 2,3,4 years...
Keep in mind - things can change. (going back to indy cars).

Absolutely no disrespect taken. Anyone that follows racing knows what he did in IRL, AND, what he did in nascar.
Win, and you get to keep going. Don't? Well, your sponsor leaves. He knows that as well as anyone. When he left Indy, he said he was done with it - he was going to sink or swim in nascar. Time wise, he had a fair shake in nascar. He had bad luck - and there's no arguing that. Mechanical failures, slow pit stops too often.......he also created some of his bad luck. (I am NOT saying his results were someone else's fault, okay?)

Always nice to see a Sharon Speedway referrence out there - I live about a mile from the track. Have you been there in the last few years? Blaney and a few other guys bought the track maybe 4-5 years ago and really improved it.
Personally, I was never hardcore into dirt racing - I went a lot when I was younger but, let's face it, there isn't a whole lot more to do in Hartford, lol. It seems to draw well still, especially when the big races or NASCAR night comes to town.
Dirt track fans are a special breed, haha.

I haven't been to Sharon in a few years, but I do enjoy a good dirt track race. Don't go that often, but do go enough to get my fill (one or two races per year). Yes, those dirt track fans are a special breed - but so are hard core NASCAR fans, club racing fans, paved circle track fans...hell, race fans in general LOL!

Every time I see "Hartford" in your info, I keep thinking of that little town over there south of Akron, pretty close to Canton,...has a big flea market and farmer's outlet, antiques, etc. I understand that is "HartVILLE." As many times as I had been to HartFORD, I just hadn't put 2 & 2 together,...I apologize for that. I spent all of my teenage free time working in the garage of a local late model racer. We ran Latrobe, Canfield, Schmucker's Wayne County, Mansfield. I was too young to get in the pits back then, but damn, we had a lot of fun following it all. It was a religion. My best buddy in high school did the same thing for Dave Benner. We were always at each other's throats come Monday,.... I have been to the track, but not since Blaney invited Tony Stewart up for a sprint car duel there about 7-8 years ago ? Short track racing just isn't the same as the old Late Model and Sportsman Division days with the 57 Chevy's, 60's Chevelles and Falcons, Fairlanes, etc. Back when we were dirt poor, Dad pulled the 292 out of the old Ford family station wagon, just to go stock car racin' with his buddy. Mom was not happy. I could tell a 100 good stories on this subject that would just bore everyone else, so I won't bother. The days go by fast and we get old,...Suffice it to say, with a military career, I lost touch with the short track era, and now, even sooner than almost twice since the last time I turned a wrench, a young kid has been born that's won the Daytona 500 ! Amazing.
