I don't know if I should be happy that we're trying to keep him, or sad that we're using our franchise tag on a kicker.

I'm not sad at all, he is by far our most consistent scoring threat and is in the upper plateau of kickers in the league. Well worth the franchise tag.

We aren't the first team to franchise thier kicker either. The Pats have done it quite a few times.

Unexpected. Clear message: We want you here. Typical Browns dramatic twist. Glad he is here, and this will sidestep some numbers issues for negotiations, neh?

We have no one else to use it on, and a clear reward to Dawson for years of service performed well.

I like it.

Once the figure is established, it shouldn't be hard to sign him to a 2 year extension at a slightly reduced rate, with the difference as the signing bonus.

Due to the time he came along, Groza has the name, and Lou was a heck of a player...some forget he was a all-pro RT for a number of years, but Dawson is the best kicker this team has had, and this team has had good kickers when you start talking Groza, Cockroft, Bahr, Dawson.....sorry, the name of the guy who went to Baltimore escapes me...he was good too.

Stover...

Good move, even though he's slightly overpaid now....kind of late bonus for him since he made less than what he was worth before

Stover.

And it's nice to know we have a reliable leg.

Although it would be nice to have a younger, stronger legged guy waiting in the wings. And while he was waiting he could kick some touch backs.

The Bengals also gave Shayne Graham the franchise tag before the 2009 season. He ended making 23 of 28 kicks.

Jeff Reed sucking probably has a lot more to do with Jeff Reed being an idiot than him getting the franchise tag.

The only thing is that, if I understand the rules correctly, (maybe Shep can help, since he is a capology guru) we can't use a franchise tag on anyone else as long as he's under contract.

That could be a bad thing if we have a contract with Dawson and Thomas becomes a free agent "early" as a result of a new CBA.

I also wonder how he's going to react to this given that he has already sold his house ....... lol

This was kind of my point. I'm not saying that as a slam against a kicker who's well worth his weight in precious medels ... it just kind of sucks that we don't have a franchise qb/rb/mlb/etc that we could be using the franchise tag on instead.

Back in the early days of tagging, teams had to sign a Franchise tagged player to a multi-year deal prior to mid-March. If they failed to do so, and then later they signed a long-term deal, the use of the tag was gone as long as that contract was in existence. This was changed in the 2006 CBA where teams have all summer (mid-July, end of 4 month negotiating period) to strike a long term deal and still have the right to tag another player the next year.

The tagging rules MAY change in the next CBA, because teams have commonly used the tag as a tool to coerce players to sign, and although legal under the agreement it is dirty pool in some cases. Currently you can only tag the same player 2 years in a row, I look for that to POSSIBLY be reduced to one.

Hope that is helpful.........

To my knowledge, he put it on the market but no word that it sold. least I haven't heard it sold yet.

so it might be a case of no harm, no foul.....

It's too far-feteched at all to think this (house on market) was a ploy by Dawson to get the Browns to do this very thing, at least in some manner, make some kind of move.

Anticipating the Franchise Tag ? That's a deep fly ball that went way over my right field head,....I gotta be honest.

We assume that one had to do with the other... It may simply be that this was in Dawson's plans (to put his house up for sale) whether or not he stayed a Brown.

Or maybe he just decided he didn't care for his neighborhood anymore and wanted to move elsewhere if he can sell.

Or this was PD's summer house. Or the hunting is better in Texas. For whatever reasons, he is with us.

Of course that's possible but like others have said, perhaps he was aware already that they intended to tag him.. so with the big raise that comes with that Tag.. maybe he and his wife wanted to upgrade thier home.. get a little bigger.

Or maybe smaller up here and bigger in Texas?

Either way, he's here for at least another year and my guess is as soon as the CBA is worked out, a long(er) term deal will be put in place.

wow, that would throw a monkey wrench into the mix wouldn't it

But I don't see how that could happen really. He is under contract for another year. I suppose anything is possible.

Im glad we have him another year. Hopefully we can get a deal done for a couple years. Id be really comfortable with 2 total or 3... Hes a decent kicker and one of the better in bad weather. I dont know if there is anyone better at kicking in Cleveland, Pitt and Cinci 6 times a year.

I read it sold.

... OR since his pay will more than triple if he ends up playing under the tag (as we know it today, at least), perhaps he can buy a better house than he had before.

LOL It was buggin me so I checked.

http://cleveland.blockshopper.com/property/21327070/1770_arlington_row

Looks as if it is indeed sold..

But if the tag income stands,, he's about to more than Triple his income.., I think he can afford to either rent or buy something else.

Either way, I'm just happy it looks as if he'll be here another year.

My girlfriend (now that she has moved out to San Diego) has a very nice house up for sale.

He can buy that one.

Please...!

You doubted me???

Like I said.....he can afford a pad, be it owned or rented.

At this point in his career, renting is probably the way to go.

He is a Texas kid, and probably wants to settle back there.....so buy there since the real estate market is a ways away.....especially in Cleveland.

Have a nice rented apartment in Cleveland for as long as he is there and a nice home in Corpus Christy on the Gulf to live in the next 35 years....all works out.

My only question is will Dawson be happy about it or not?

Yes, he gets a nice check for a 1 yr deal.

But, he's getting older as well and I would guess wanted to sign a multi-year deal one more time. All this does is add another year before trying to sign a multi-year deal.

The article says that they are using the tag to keep him here while a long(er) term deal is worked out.

If he isn't happy, just don't take a deal with the Browns beyond this year. And then he pockets 3.5 mill... nice situation to be in..

I think he'll like it.

Sure he will. He will take it as a good sign.

Call the tag his bonus, now sign for 2 more years for less and everybody is happy.

This way no prorated bonus to carry forward.

Each team is allowed to designate one of their players who is going to become a unrestricted free agent [or RFA] with the 'franchise tag'. [There is only a two week window]

There are two types of franchise tag ... exclusive and non-exclusive:

Exclusive: The player must be offered a one year contract 1) at a salary of the average of the top five salaried players at his position, or 2) at a salary at least 120% of his previous year's salary, whichever of the two is the higher amount. The player may not negotiate with any other teams even though he is a free agent.

Non-exclusive. Same as the Exclusive player except the player is allowed to negotiate with other teams. Should the player agree in principle to a contract with another team, his present team is allowed to match the contract and keep his services. If his present team does not match the contract, the player becomes a member of the other team and the other team must 'pay' two first round draft choices as compensation to the player's now former team.

The exclusive tag is a way for the owners to get around free agency. The exclusive tag does not allow the player to negotiate with other teams and the non-exclusive tag states the team will be compensated if the player signs with another team.

Answers.com

So the magic number = the top 5 at his position.
