Hey, it's Browns related . . .

Mike Holmgren nearly hired himself to coach the Browns

Posted by Mike Florio on March 3, 2011, 3:04 PM EST

Before and after Browns president Mike Holmgren fired coach Eric Mangini, the Big Show had been dropping big hints about the possibility that the best man for the job could be the man deciding who will fill it. In the end, Holmgren hired Pat Shurmur.

But Holmgren tells Dave “Softy” Mahler of KJR in Seattle that the former Packers and Seahawks coach ran the idea of coaching the Browns past his staff — and his staff agreed. In the end, Holmgren decided against it after talking to his wife and “pray[ing] about it a little bit.”

The full audio is available at the KJR website.

http://media.ccomrcdn.com/media/station_content/645/Mike_3-3_1299180884_26583.mp3?

Though it’s unclear whether he’ll ever coach again, the fact that Shurmur has no offensive coordinator and will be calling the plays bolsters our belief that Holmgren will have a large wooden spoon in the stew — something that Shurmur surely knew when he agreed to take the job.

Given Holmgren’s accomplishments, Shurmur surely isn’t complaining, either.

If I have one complaint about Holmgren, it's this obsession of keeping everyone guessing and on the edge of thier seats over his coming back to coaching.....

It's almost like being the Brett Favre of coaching or something.. I'm retireing, no I'm not, I'm thinking about it, no I"m not, I've made up my mind, but let me think about it again...

Life has a enough uncertain situations,,

Personally, I don't think it was even close...

Doesn't really surprise me that he was close to doing it, but it also doesn't surprise me that he decided against it.

He probably talked with his wife and she said "Mike, do you really want to go back to all those hours and all that pressure?"

Did he?

Look at the structure of things. The only thing that he doesn't have is the title, but the hierarchy is there.
Shurmur is the OC, Holmgren is the HC.

I hate that he comes out publicly with this....why undermine your new 1st time HC? What's this now good for anyway?

I still think he's not made for this job...he simply talks too much about stuff he should keep his mouth shut

So your saying you think he's the HC but he hired Shurmer to do the day to day dirty work?

If thats the case, then that is idiotic me thinks! If he wanted to HC, then that's exactly what he should have done.....

Mike Holmgren can do whatever he wants and those who don't like it...tough.

He said he thought about it, ran it by his staff, but after talking it over with his wife and God, decided against it...end of story.

I will say this, whatever involvement Holmgren "may" desire, the Browns will be a better football team as a result...whether he stays the man behind the scenes or the man helping out the offense or the man leading the offense.

...it's all good !

I'm thinking the same thing, that's quite a butthead move of him.

There's folks (including myself) that think shumur is just a puppet. Mike H wants all the power and not the hours.

We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

And I think his ego is going to end up costing us in the long run. Personally, I hope you're right.

Yep...

On Sundays, our field HC is Shurmur, Mon - Sat, I'm banking on Holmgren.

It will be a group decision. The same as it always has been. Holmgren, Haskell and other will have an imprint on the offense. They will be out a practice just like last year under Mangini.

It's group effort, if they don't win everybody is blamed. It will be interesting to watch how long Holmgren stays in his current seat once the defense looks like swiss cheese. The 4-3 will be the issue next year not the offense.

Not quite sure how it will be like swiss cheese. I dont expect it to be amazing, but I doubt it will be horrible if we can finish up the offseason correctly.

Secondary is above average at this point... a lot will depend on if we tender / bring back Elam and Wright. That could put it over the top.

Linebackers ... if we can get solid play out of a combination of Fujita, Gocong, Jackson, Maiva (who has the potential to play well in a 4-3 with his lack of size but speed is a plus) and also a few others that we might draft / bring in / already have and develop

and the d-line .. where we could potentially land between 2 and 4 players I would assume in the draft even as rotational players... still have some combination of Rubin, Schaefering, and Roth and Bernard if they are all back ... Heck ... with a draft where we just pick defense we could have Dareus, Rubin, maybe Heyward (not being a homer, just which DE you think could fall into the second...) and then whoever else ...

not lights out but far from swiss cheese. I am more concerned with the offense. Your defense can give up 3 and you can lose ... but it can also give up 50 as long as your O can score 51 ...

This D will stink on ice.
You say maybe,if,could be.You throw out names of guys that could, possibly, maybe have potential in a 4-3.
You're right about giving up 50.
This D maybe, quite possibly,if,could have the potential to give that up on a weekly basis.

Well the only reason I am using "maybe, if, possibly" is because there are 32 teams that have major holes, issues at free agents, and questions of thier whole operations structure because of a thing called the CBA expiring.

This is not a "business as usual" year, so I say what I see rather than spewing my unfiltered mouth as though I knew more about the team than Heckert and Holmgren combined...

Another glimpse of the Parcells syndrome poor Mike suffers from. I wanna coach but I won't coach or interfere but you better do it my way, but I don't wan't to tell you what to do. Who CARES at this point. Does he suffer from FARVEitis gimme some attention? He chose a rookie head coach, is he already having buyers remorse?

You have one second hand quote from a guy in Seattle that he considered coaching.. he decided not to.. the rest about the not having an OC and having a spoon in the stew.. that is all the writer speculating.. I'd take that for what it's worth, which ain't much.
