This is very good news. Everyone has always said he would do great in a 4-3. No he gets to prove it.
Stay healthy.

They have also tendered Eric Wright with a second round pick per Mary Kay.

Great moves. If these guys can stay healthy it would be huge for our defense.

I'm just glad because it means I don't have to rename my fantasy football teams. DQwell's Dominion lives on!!!

Here's hoping DQ stays healthy, flourishes in the 4-3 and earns every incentive built into that contract.

I love the deals. No lose in my opinion ... if either does amazing / solid we can pay them and sign them to long terms ... if they stink up the joint ... we at least have this offseason to worry about other holes and either draft a late corner and/or inside LB or take care of it next year

Meh.
I'm not a big D'Qwell fan.
Hopefully he can actually stay healthy this year.

No doubt...
FA is gonna be interesting this year...Unless these bozos extend again today...And I mean a 2 week extension not this 24 hour BS...No FA before the draft...
And when it does start...All of these RFA's are gonna be available for 2012 draft compensation...Who Ponies Up???...
And they'd have an entire year to recoup those compensation picks...Me thinks we may very well see much more RFA movement than in the past...Good move to Tender as many as u can...2nd and 3rd round picks for someone who signs elsewhere sounds damn good to me...
Go Browns!!!

I wasn't before as he was undersized for a 3-4. Going to the 4-3 should help keep some of the big beef off of him, so I might start liking him more.
Good move.

Yeah, hope he doesn't wind up on the IR again ..... those pens are pretty heavy ......
Not being mean here ... but I don't get why some fans go crazy over certain players.
Jackson is just one more player at a position we need to upgrade. If he suddenly figures out how to stay healthy and make a difference at and behind the LOS, then I'll happily admit I was wrong ..... but he's made a living off making tackles 5 yards downfield ..... and creates very few negative plays ..... and those negative plays are the difference between a so-so LB and a great LB.
I do understand that we are very short on players who can play the 4-3, and so re-signing him was probably a necessity ... but I wouldn't hold my breath as far as him being the difference maker on defense. I see him as a stop-gap, at best.

I'd say I was one of the earliest... er, realists... on DQ. I am glad they re-signed him. I think if we can get Dareus in at DT he could be a terrific MLB for us. I know Heckert's talking about playing him at WLB, but I think DQ would be better focusing on more of a run-stopping role than blitzing and dropping back in coverage. JMO, though.

Well if Jackson doesn't play Will, who is going to?
Cogong was a very good run-stopping linebacker. I think that might be his position. Fujita plays SSLB.
I expect Jackson to play WLB, and I think he'll be pretty good at it. He's decent in coverage and he's very good at open field tackling. He won't have the giant guys on him on the weakside, and he'll still do plenty of run stopping.
Jackson probably would be a good ILB too, but Cogong isn't really fast enough to play weakside. Jackson is much more suited to this position than Cogong.
I like all three of these guys as our starting linebackers for next year, and I think Cogong will surprise some people as a 4-3 ILB. He impressed me last year, and there's nothing wrong with another big guy in the middle to stop the runs up the middle. I'm more worried about Cogong is coverage, but he'd have to do that on the weakside anyway................

Hopefully his pecks stay in tact and he stays on the field. This could be an opportunity for him to excel.

Dq was a stud for Maryland!!!
He made his mark with tackles sideline to sideline and anticipating the hole. In a 4-3 the DL take up the OL so that the line backers can shoot the gaps. DQ was stuck in a 3-4 and having to take on the interior linemen of the opposing teams. His injuries occurred why trying to shed blocks from interior linemen.
This 4-3 defense is suited for DQ. His anticipation and recognition of plays will be highlighted in this defense. Ahtyba Rubin will be DQ best friend now they just need some DE to hold up at the point of attack!

if Gocong was a successful MLB for us next year, then yes it would surprise me.
he is strong against the run, but a 4-3 MLB needs to be fast sideline to sideline and have the ability to cover the TE. those are Gocongs weakest qualities.

One of the things the NFLPA is going to push for is getting the Restricted tag back to 4 years. So these 5 and 6 year players with tags are likely to become free agents.

For those reasons you mentioned Gocong is better fit inside than on the edge .He's strong enough to stuff the run but on the edge his lack of speed was exploited too much.

You could say that about almost every one of our draft picks for the last 11 years with a couple exceptions.. In many cases our picks just weren't that good but in other cases I believe our expectations were too high.. DQ falls into the latter category.... I said when he was drafted that he would be a tackling machine, a smart dependable player who would probably never make a pro-bowl but would be great if you put a stud beside him... he was not going to be "the stud", he was going to be a very good LBer...... injuries have derailed that the last couple years but when healthy he was pretty darn good. I'd like to see him get a year in with good health and see what he can do...

but, if we are running the Tampa-2, then he is responsible for covering the TE-seam route. do you really want to see Gocong trying to keep up with Heap and Miller down the middle of the field with little help if he gets beat?

Maybe it was the system not the player.. anyway, he's our s now so we'll find out if he fits, that's if he can stay healthy.
For sure he's not a weak spot, just maybe not the perfect player.. we'll see.

Actually Gocong was our 2nd best cover LB last season (Fujita being #1).
I know it's not saying much considering players such as Barton, Bowens and Roth whom he is compared with.
He is 5 year player and to my knowledge, we haven't given any tenders to those in his category. Last season they would have been RFA and would have had to be tendered by the same time frame.
This year we can only speculate at this point.
4 year players will almost certainly still fall into the restricted category.

If we run that..but the same thing can be said for him covering a back or slot receiver coming in the slant if he's on the outside.

agreed. which is why Gocong is probably best in a 3-4.
I hope he can prove me wrong and be a viable LB for us, but I also hope that our FO makes a move to rely on him as a backup and not a starter (the DQ tender means that if he magically stays healthy and we sign a Nick Barnett, it's possible Gocong is a backup. I'm fine with that).

It appears that what some of us have said in the past holds true, the Browns never really aquire players who fit what they wanted to do. Looking at our backers, they don't fit together,no matter the scheme.

How do you know we're running this Tampa-2?
The 4-3 I know of I thought would be Fujita jamming or covering the TE. Then the safety picking up the TE if Fujita is not covering him.
And the ILB is a run stopper or covers the RB on passing plays.
WLB covers the other side and blitzes off the DE.......................
Barnett sounds nice, but at what price? We already got a guy here who I think would be able to play the position.
Instead we could may be get a DE or safety (to replace Elam) or a WR.

first, attack - agreed there as well. we have ill-fitting parts at LB specifically for any scheme. it's like a mish-mash of 3-4 and 4-3 guys.
4-3 tampa-2 is the most recent base defense that Jauron has run. perhaps we play more cover3, but then we need a FS even more (which we don't currently have). my main concern is that if we do play the 4-3 tampa-2, then having Gocong at MLB will be a huge liability (and we're likely to at least mix that defense in even if our base is cover3).
I want to get the most talented players we can acquire. Outside of Atogwe, I don't see a S worth going to get to play FS. There doesn't seem to be many good DEs on the market either. WR is definitely a position to at least address in the FA pool (Rice, Sims-Walker, Floyd are 3 potential targets).

The bleacher report had an article recently that called Jauron a tampa 2 coach and it has been taken as fact.
The only fact is that Jauron has always mixed up his schemes. He is just as likely to blitz as he is to play the cover 2 or tampa 2.
I think everyone needs to remember what he did with the Jags and what Rhodes did with the Eagles and Seahawks. They are all about getting to the ball.
Jauron and Rhodes are very similar in the fact that they are looking for 2 qualities above all else. They want athletes and and film room nuts. If you arent in the film room with these coaches, you wont be around long. If you lack athleticism chances are they are seeking your replacement. The big monsters in the middle are the only exceptions.
Both guys will study the individual player and find out what he does best and then try to incorporate that into their scheme. This is their history.

I'm just going to throw this out there.. but Ryans hasn't come close to duplicating his rookie season numbers since 2006... where Jackson just seemed to start hitting his potential in 2008 when he had a season as good or better than any season Ryans has had.... the single biggest thing that seperates Ryans and Jackson is that Jackson has been hurt a lot more....

Also, Demeco should have "fun" trying to transition his game to the 3-4 under Wade now. He's not exactly built like Bradie James.

Mario Williams, Brian Cushing, and Amobi Okoye. None of them fit the 3-4.
