Mario Williams, Brian Cushing, and Amobi Okoye. None of them fit the 3-4.
I agree. though Mario might be good enough to adjust to any system (just not reach his true potential in the 3-4). if it weren't for the lockout, we could have some interesting trade possibilities between our teams.

I think Super Mario will do very well as a 3-4 DE. Will he be happy about it? I can't imagine he will be. Does he have the size and power to hold the edge and to rush the passer from that position? Absolutely.
Also I think Cushing should do fine as a LB in the 3-4 (he did it in college), provided he can keep juicing.

Dqwell Jackson there is already film of him in the NFL, so we can know what he can do. There is a qustion of his health.
It has been a while, so some folks don't remember, or didn't see some of the good plays he has made. A young healthy Dqwell Jackson, certainly I saw some strength's to having him on the field and what stands out in my mind the most is
Unbeleivable over the back pass coverage knockdowns in the middle of the field. Unbelievable because they weren't even old fashioned pass interference, they were legal plays and passes defensed, even legal in the 1980's when over the back was the only way to have a pass interference.
I remember Dqwell leaping head over heels over anything in his way to break up passes or get to the ball. That is the strength of having him on the field that I remember.
I've seen it a couple times, either in person, or on game broadcasts, or both, but it didn't get highlighted by broadcasters, ( most don't talk up the Browns )
so a healthy Dqwell, if he's back, is a little bit more than just another fill in
so YTown, we all have a mindset of what a player brings, and its hard to recognize what Dqwells done in the past, but I"m telling you if he's back? it's a good thing.
Because If he's back, what you have is a player a little better than how TJ Ward played last year as far as impact on defense.
so we can see if hes healthy and everything he used to be, ( he's not overaged as 27 is the most athletic age to be... I once heard its the age baseball players have their best years ...
Dqwell Jackson is an original Brown, the first NFL jersey he put on was a Browns Jersey and those players, I think, will put more heart into team success, when the game hangs in the balance.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

I hope you're right ..... but I think they signed him to a 1 year "show me" deal where they can dump him at any time if he doesn't work out.
Frankly, I'm not holding my breath. Too many "iffy" players taken high is why this team is in the position it's in. Chaun Thompson, Sean Jones, Brodney Pool, D'Qwell Jackson, Brady Quinn, David Veikune, and so on ..... all 2nd round (plus 1 1st rounder) that we have damn near nothing to show for. I would almost scratch Quinn ... because we got Hillis for him ... but I bet we still could have traded a pick for Hillis and got him.
Man that's a depressing list of 2nd round failure right there.

I don't think DQ belongs on that list just like I don't think Courtney Brown deserves to be a list of our first round busts.. I think the guy could have been pretty good if he could stay healthy and I still think DQ can be good.. .. The problem is that of those second round picks they were made by what? 4 different combinations of HC, GM, etc? I'm not going to preach consistency and stability to you ytown, the choir has already heard the sermon..

The foundation of your team, if you follow the Green Bay model, should be made up largely of your own 1st and 2nd round picks.
Jackson is a decent player .... but not a "foundational" player IMHO.

Then that is where we disagree.. when healthy, he is a foundational player.. but he has to stay on the field

Add to that the 3rd round draft blunders...
Travis Wilson, Charlie Frye, Chris Crocker, Melvin Fowler, James Jackson, Travis Prentice, Jajuan Dawson and Marquice Smith.
With the first 3 rounds I think your have to get a player who can eventually become a starter in the League.
Add to that a FO who did not know how to draft for our BPA.
Kamerion Wimbley and D'Qwell Jackson were not necessarily bad picks, but they were wrong for our scheme.
Players we traded away draft picks for on the DL who were not a good fit for our 34.

D'Qwell Jackson was never a shed and tackle type of ILB you look for in a 34, yet when healthy he still managed to lead the team in tackles, albeit 5 yards down field because he had to deal with OG before attempting to make a tackle and that's not how to best utilize his talents imo.
DQ makes quick reads and has range side line to side line and can finish with a bang! He is adequate in coverage, but I hate to beat a dead horse here, DQ at 6'0" trying to cover a 6'4" TE with a much larger receiving diameter is a miss match from the get go as with most MLB types. [34 ILB you like them to be around 6'2"] I'm not sure how he would fit at the WILL position, because we have nothing that can predict such a move.
I would try to resign Gocong and let he and DQ battle it out for the MLB this year and cut the loser in 2012.

Ok, it's probably just me, but is Gocong a FA? I thought he had another year on contract? I could be wrong.

Gocong is a (5) year FA. Even if he is an UFA [under a new CBA] we could still put a tender on him. The minimum of 110% of his last years salary, but any team could exceed what we offer and if we lost him we would receive a compensatory draft pick for him in 2012, but I think we will try to get him resigned.
Btw, I know it's merely a foot note, but Walter football has the Browns resigning TE Alex Smith on the same day we resigned DQ.
It was the first I saw on resigning Smith.

Jackson to return in 2011 By Matt Florjancic, ClevelandBrowns.com Staff Writer
Posted 4 hours ago
Though it will be in a new defensive scheme, linebacker D’Qwell Jackson is eager to be back with the Browns for the 2011 season. Browns linebacker D'Qwell Jackson has seen a majority of the last two seasons derailed due to injuries to his pectoral muscles.
Those injuries cost him all 16 games in 2010 and ten more during the 2009 season. For a player who registered 411 total tackles in the three seasons before 2009, missing games is difficult to handle. However, Jackson will get a chance to wear the orange and brown again in 2011.
“I definitely feel blessed,” Jackson said. “It’s definitely another opportunity that’s in front of me right now to where I don’t have to look at getting up, moving, relocating and getting a feel for another city, another team. Just to be back in Cleveland, that’s my comfort zone. That’s the team that drafted me and I feel fortunate enough, due to my injuries the past two years, to have a shot to stay in Cleveland long-term.
“I feel like I’m in a good situation,” he continued. “Just sitting back, I’ve been watching the games for a long time, have seen the guys come in and I’m excited to play with those guys, (Scott) Fujita, (Chris) Gocong, T.J. Ward, Joe Haden. Those rookies had tremendous seasons and I just want to be a part of it. I feel like the Lone Ranger in a sense. I haven’t been on the field in over a year, so I’m definitely excited about it and looking forward to it.”
While watching the 2010 season, Jackson saw Ward, a rookie safety, register a team-best 105 total tackles, Haden, a first-year cornerback, collect six interceptions and Gocong and Fujita combine for 125 stops. Jackson will get the chance to work with those and many other players in a 4-3 defense under new coordinator Dick Jauron.
“As long as I’m on the field, it doesn’t matter,” he said. “As long as I can tackle the guy with the ball, it doesn’t matter. Since I’ve been in the league, I’ve played in the 3-4 and have experienced different coordinators. I’m excited about being in a 4-3. For one, it’s more guys in front of me, more meatheads in front of me. It’s a chance to show my talent and show Gocong’s talent and Fujita. With a 4-3, I think we’ll be able to move around a little bit. We have a running-style conference and in October, November, December, when the weather gets bad, you really have to play great defense. I think the 4-3 is more suited for the guys that we have.
“I have to go out and prove that I can play 16 games and be healthy, especially after the last two years with these two pectoral tears,” added Jackson. “I’m just looking forward to getting back out there with the guys, getting back into the swing of things and try to lead this team to the playoffs.”
lol@ the meathead comment. I hope D'Qwell comes back strong b/c I really don't wanna have to draft any LB's.

Good luck DQ. I'd love to see him prosper in this new defense (which I believe he's better suited for than the 3-4). After two hard-luck injuries, he's due to get through a year healthy, right?

For sure, before the past two years of injury, Jackson had some decent seasons. He's better in the 3-4 than Andra Davis was. Some people have complained about his coverage skills, I think he's actually pretty good in coverage.
And if we can get him on the weakside, he should be a very effective run stopper. He's great at tackling and tackling in space, he just needs to avoid pulling guards and such who are coming to block him.
But yeah, I like your thinking, two tough years of injuries, it's about time for a good and healthy one. I don't remember him having injury issues before this.......

I think they are right about the same player actually. Neither could shed a block, or deliver a blow up tackle. Both are fairly good in coverage. Jackson has a speed advantage. I dont know how well Jackson reads the offense, I seem to remember him always having to chase the plays down because he went to the wrong side of the field . Davis was always in the right position to make the play, he just lacked the ability to shed. I dont see where Jackson is any better at all really. He would have had a higher upside, but losing these last 2 seasons has really cost him. Instead of recovering from another injury, he should be coming into this season in his absolute prime.

I disagree as far as Davis being in the right position. That guy took more overpursuit angles than any other linebacker in recent memory.

I agree, that was a ridiculous statement. Davis took terrible angles, and he bit on cutbacks like no other.
He constantly would be out of position, but like Jackson he was good at the actual tackling part of the play (as in good form tackling). Davis also had trouble shedding blockers though.
Overall Jackson is a superior linebacker IMO, although both were better fits in the 4-3
