Not sure how u guys feel about him...But this right here could very well happen...WOW...The key is 2 QB's and Palmer staying head-strong... MY 1-2-3 ALL there at 6...Peterson/Green/Dareus... Here's the first of several mock drafts I will be doing over the next two months: 1. Carolina Panthers Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson The Panthers have a lot of needs after they basically put a freeze on personnel last year. They could take a quarterback or a defensive tackle, but opt to attempt to replace Julius Peppers for now. Ron Rivera is a defensive-minded coach and he needs more talent if his scheme is going to work. 2. Denver Broncos Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn John Fox is switching from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3, and anytime you can get a three-technique DT that can penetrate and disrupt the offense you take him. Re-signing Champ Bailey put an end to speculation about drafting Patrick Peterson. 3. Buffalo Bills Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri Some will say Ryan Fitzpatrick is just fine, and that might be true, but you never pass on a franchise quarterback. Gabbert would not have to play right away, which is ideal. Still, with Tom Brady and Mark Sanchez in the division, it might be time to get a talented youngster for the position. This could turn into the spot Cam Newton goes, but I will go with things I heard at the combine at this point. If teams like San Francisco or Washington want a QB they might have to move up. 4. Cincinnati Bengals Cam Newton, QB, Auburn Even though the Bengals have needs at defensive end, safety and wide receiver, they might feel compelled to take a quarterback here, especially with the situation surrounding Carson Palmer, who sounds serious about never playing in Cincinnati again. 5. Arizona Cardinals Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M If history is any indicator of what happens in a draft, then the Cardinals might find the top two quarterbacks gone by this point. Miller is an outstanding talent and a great selection here. He starts from Day 1 and will be a pass-rush factor. 6. Cleveland Browns A.J. Green, WR, Georgia The Browns lost all of their playmakers over the past few years and Colt McCoy needs a No. 1 receiver. One general manager told me at the combine that Julio Jones had a great weekend, "but there is something special about Green as a playmaker." While the Browns need a defensive end and right tackle, they will expect to cover those issues in the second and third round. 7. San Francisco 49ers Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU Even though the 49ers might want a QB here, it is a bit high to take Jake Locker. Peterson is an outstanding corner/safety. The Niners have 10 draft picks and should be able to address most of their needs even if they have to move up in other rounds. 8. Tennessee Titans Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama The Titans are another team that needs a quarterback, but unless they like Locker at this spot they probably take the defensive tackle. Too early to take an interior offensive lineman, although they could give very strong consideration to DE/OLB Robert Quinn. 9. Dallas Cowboys Cameron Jordan, DE, California The Cowboys need a corner and a right tackle, but unless they shore up the defensive front they aren't going anywhere. Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan wants athletic people up front who can handle all the schemes he's going to throw at opponents. 10. Washington Redskins Julio Jones, WR, Alabama Jones put on a show at the combine and then the news came down about his foot injury. He could fall from this spot at a later date, yet right now he fits a need for Washington, and his grade warrants the selection here. Will the Redskins consider Locker? He has skills like Jake Plummer, and Mike Shanahan got all the way to the AFC Championship Game with Plummer. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81...s?module=HP_cp2

I really don't like the idea of picking a wr with our first pick. Its just way to high in the draft to take a receiver. I tend to think that that position is just to dependent on too many other variables to waste such a high pick on one.
IMO, the first 1-10 picks should be reserved for LT, DT, DE. QB, RB, Maybe a CB. Definitely think we should go defense. I would be happy with anyone as long as they are best defensive player available. Preferably a DT or DE.
I just don't like picking a receiver so high when his performance is going to be relying on so many other factors. And looking at Super Bowl winning teams over the past 15 years---there is only like one or two that had receivers that were drafted in the top 10. Picks 15-30 make a lot more sense for picking wide receivers.

I will PUKE if we go WR in the 1st round.
We need to build the lines first. (especially important in the 4-3 defense) We have the makings of a strong secondary, but without pressure, they can onlt do so much.
Make the engine as powerful as possible, then add the accessories like WRs.

I get what u guys r saying...BUT...
The WORST way to destroy a team is to take NEED inside the Top 7 or so picks...
Guys like Green and Peterson have got to be in our Top 2 or 3 BPA...These guys r that damn good...SPECIAL...
Even if you're at the point of having solid players on your team...U can't pass on STUDS...
We always talk about this...What r the most important positions both offensively AND in a 4-3 D...
QB/LT/#1 WR DE/#1 CB/Prolly MLB
We can't pass on Higher Rated guys like Peterson and Green to settle for an End just because...
I'd PUKE if we left Green OR Peterson on the board to take a Kerrigan/Clayborn/Watt...
Go Browns!!!

I agree, but as it is posted here, Petersen is better than Green, and Dareus is at least as good, or so close you do look at the needs of the team....and DL is a much bigger need over a receiver.

right now our DL would not be able to compete against a very bad offensive team. and still some want a CB at #6 ???? the best CB in the draft will still be exposed by the current DL we have. Two of our top three picks will prolly be DL and rightfully so unless a CBA can be reached before the draft AND we get a few DL bodies in here.

It is so hard to guess right now. IF the draft was held today, Fairley is the most likely to be drafted by the Browns.
Now once this CBA gets cleared up those 5 and 6 year players will get freed up, we will get geared up for the draft. Free agency and maybe some trades will give us direction for the draft.
Meben from Seattle will be target #1 in free agency.

Has anyone looked at the offensive production from the WR's last year?
It was pathetic, worst in the league, stink, stank stunk.
I have no problem taking Green with the Pick, or Dareus, or Peterson.
Probably in that order.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

Same here. We need offensive production. If you cant score, you dont win in this league.

If we had Peterson, Haden and Brown With Ward together last year...My guess is Boldin doesn't score 3 TDs and Holmes doesn't Win that game..An upgrade to Wright would make a huge difference by itself. I prefer Green or Peterson at the 6 and if they are not there I try my hardest to trade down to get Jones or Watt..and get an extra pick.

I tend to agree here, but I think we can do this without Green/Jones. I lean toward Peterson here, to lock down the secondary. While that is not a guarantee, it is more likely than that a WR will "lock down" the offense.

I have no problem with AJ Green in Round 1. A good WR changes the way a defense has to operate.
How is Colt McCoy supposed to stand a chance out there if his best option this season is Ben Watson.
I'd love Mass and Robiskie to improve and be good WRs, but last year, they weren't that. They didn't get much separation, and when they did, they sometimes dropped balls (Mass). Green was better than MoMass his freshman year at UGA. That's the difference in caliber player we'd be getting.
Our best receivers last year were Ben Watson, Evan Moore, and Chanci Stuckey (who is gone!). That is very sad. If no one is getting open, McCoy will not be very successful.
I have no issue with AJ Green at number 6. I guess I'm good with whoever Heckert wants, but personally, I'd like AJ Green at number 6 (not Julio Jones though, only AJ Green)

I agree..especially while Colt is being given the keys to the Car..You want to put him in the best position possible to succeed.. If he is the future, this is a crucial year in his development..thus getting him a true #1 receiver is a must.

I will agree to the extent that if they are both there, you take Green. This is a no-brainer if it was ever defined.
Peterson at that spot will HARD to pass up.

You're making an extremely important point here.
It has become so easy for Defenses to game plan for the Browns: Man-to-man on the Browns weak WRs, put 9 in the box to stop Hillis and you have a recipe for success. Defensive meetings during "Browns week" must take opposing teams 10 minutes. They probably spend most of the week planning for the next opponent.
Bring in someone that at least has some #1 WR talent and the game opens up a bit for Colt and our offense.
I'd take Green or Jones in a heartbeat with #6.

What you need to recognize is whether they're the BPA. As I said, I have no problem going with a WR at 6 because the guy is THAT good. But reaching for a WR is just silly, especially one with issues catching the ball. If you think that Julio Jones is one of the top 6 players, fine. But don't base it on a combine performance or the fact that we could really use a WR.
There's no need to get a Roy Williams (can't catch the ball, although he was great in college) or Heyward-Bey (combine star) on the team. From watching Green play, I'm sure he's the real deal. He's been good since he got to UGA
But about the tools and game planning, that's exactly it, Savage once said that while a receiver might not get the ball as much as a RB, they have to be accounted for if they're in the game. AJ Green can help us stretch the field, pull guys out of the box, and open up our running game. This works vice-versa though, if they're gonna stack the box to stop Hillis, it would be nice to have a guy who can stretch the field and kill them on a deep post route.
Ben Watson and Evan Moore are TE's, they won't do that. And as I said, I'm not holding my breath and planning on MoMass and Robo to suddenly get good. We did that with WR's in the past and it didn't work out. I expected much more out of those guys last year, so this year, I'm going to hope to be pleasantly surprised.
But otherwise, I'd like to look for another option in the draft or FA (and I don't really know the receivers beyond AJ Green)

It won't be that easy this year even if we don't add a single offensive player to this years roster.
The NCO is going to stretch other teams thinner then we did last year.
We will have many situation where both Watson and Moore are on the field. Somebody is going to have to cover them.
We are going to have many situations where both Hillis and Hardesty are on the field. While Hardesty is unproven at this point, everybody is fairly confident in his ability to run and catch. Those are dimensions Vickers lacked.
I am not saying we don't need to improve at receiver, and am fine if we go that route with the first pick. I am just saying we are going to be better even if we don't get that guy in round 1.
For me, I would rather work on the D. Get some 3 and outs, gain some field position, keep the games closer and allow the O more opportunities to touch the ball.
That wins games.
How might have last season looked if we held teams to one less field goal, had a few more offensive touches and added 2 more field goals??

For probably the first time ever I'm not gonna sweat over looking at who we may or may not take in the 1st. I will watch and see who we take, then check them out. However, if the Bengals do in fact take Cam Newton, I may not see our selection from rolling on the floor laughing hysterically.

I do NOT want a wide receiver in first round; especially in one of the better defensive drafts in a few years. "Defense is ahead of offense." We will be installing both. Each with some major personnel and coaching additions. In light of a potential lockout, I think Peterson or a killer DE. DT may have quality in a few later rounds. I think we need a WR or two as well, just not first pick, and it might be hard to justify "best man available" to explain it. That is rather overridden by needs, which we have aplenty.

Realistically, this is nothing more than just "another guess"...
I would be thrilled if AJ Green, Patrick Peterson and Marcell Dareus were still on the board when the Browns pick.
I would rate Patrick Peterson as the best pick available, AJ Green second and Dareus third.

As long as they don't take Fairley or Jones..they could take anyone of the top 5 players and still come out on top..I'm very leary of Quinn/Fairley/Jones..and to some degree Von Miller.

Based on that outlook with an assumption that the Bengals do take Newton and he is quickly successful, defense WILL become even more important,...
I say we grab Pete if he and Green are both "there."
To improve last year's offense requires fixing the right side as much as it does getting that "no miss" 1st Round WR,...and THAT is a gamble anyway, compared to picking a Patrick Peterson.

Just to play devils advocate, picking Peterson does very little to help us against the run.. so great, we can have a top 5 pass defense because nobody needs to throw on us... I happen to think defensive secondary is down on our list of needs... we NEED a WR and a DT and a LB and a RT... all more than we need another corner...
I just think we can find a good (not great but good) DT in the second round, I doubt we can find true #1 WR in the second.. thats why if Green is available I think you have to take him.. then take DT or LB in the 2nd and RT in the 3rd... Ideally that is what I would like to see (unless something weird happens in FA).. If Green is gone then you rework the plan because while I'm looking at needs, I still don't want a total reach with the #6 pick..
Not to mention, and I'll just throw this out there.. people got real bored real quick with our 10-12 ppg output last year... I will get crap from the "build the team the right way" folks because I agree with them, but this team needs not only an influx of talent, it needs a bit of excitement.. and that usually doesn't come from a DT,,,

I disagree...
Many said that NYJ was so great against the run this year because they had two outstanding CBs on an island, and they could put more guys in the box...
If you "KNOW" your CB is ganna lock his WR down, than you can stack the box and eliminate the run...
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

Petersen is excellent against the run.
Haden as an example helped against the run.
I guess the lesson here is nearly everybody is making good points. It's six of one, half a dozen of the other.
We probably need at least one more solid draft AFTER this on to take the division.
Just a point on the excitement factor you mention. How much of last year lack of excitement was caused by the O in general??
Something tells me the O this year IS going to be more creative and exciting, no matter what.
Earlier I said it wouldn't bother me is we took Green with the first pick.
It also wouldn't bother me is we didn't select a offensive player until round 5.

I see your point but having a corner who is good against the run, doesn't help you as much as having a DT that is good against the run.. and that was my point..
That is like saying our running game will improve because AJ Green is a good blocker.. while that may be true, that isn't why you draft him.
Point is, we need impact players at 4 or 5 positions, and I agree with you, we need a couple this year and a couple more next year I think before we can really start talking about making a run... and what we really need but never seem to find is that 5th or 6th round guy that shocks everybody and plays like Marques Colston... when do we get to find a guy like that?

We don't KNOW who is better just what a consesus says. Why do the Ravens and Steelers get top talent picking late every year. They pick players they want for their system. Green, Darius, Peteson, the DEs, Fairley, so many directions. we could take cam newton and hold some teams up for ransom. I like the OT from Wisconsin, a real stud and a really nice piece for our week RT dilemma. The front office's comments about Pashos(injured his last three seasons) being the guy at RT are as reassuring to me as the words before last season that we did not need vteran WR help. Gulp. There are so many top players and we will get one of them.

This is just my opinion and it is largely intangible... I think it is more the atmosphere they bring them into than it is that they get better players.... nobody will ever convince me that the Steelers and Patriots are just so good at gleening talent that their later draft picks are better than other teams earlier draft picks.... but you take these guys and bring them into a stable environment, stable coaching staff, stable ownership, veteran leaders, expectation of excellence and winning, attitude of "we are going to win next year with or without you" so take your time to learn...
It is just way different than coming here where we NEED you to step up and be a star from day 1 so we can get to 7 wins...
The Browns have had 2 kinds of coaches for the last 10 years... either they are in their 1st or 2nd year and they are still getting their personnel together and implementing their system or they are in their 3rd and 4th year and are therefore on the hot seat for not winning and are about to be fired...

This is just my opinion and it is largely intangible... I think it is more the atmosphere they bring them into than it is that they get better players.... nobody will ever convince me that the Steelers and Patriots are just so good at gleening talent that their later draft picks are better than other teams earlier draft picks...
Actually it is that simple..the Pats look at players who have a specific talent and then draft them based on that skillset. They use them for the skill they have. The Steelers are good at getting the right fit in the draft. If they want a 34LB thats what they look at ..perhaps one that another team would not look at..but if he's a terrific pass rusher ,they go after those types.

I don't think it hurts a guys confidence when he gets to camp and you say, "Welcome to camp Mr. First Round Draft Pick LBer, there are a few guys I'd like you to meet.... this is Casey Hampton, he'll be in front of you, this is James Harrison, he'll be beside you, and this is Troy Polamalu, he'll be behind you... so you just relax and go play ball."

Really? You mean they don't like hearing "This is Mr. Rogers, he will be your best friend for 7 games this season ... here is Hank Poteat ... he will probably try hard but we really only brought him in because he's not good at math so we pay him less than the league minimum and we don't get reported for it ... and here is Mr. Elam... we tell him to play safety but he just likes to go "rover" whenever he wants. D'Qwell is a solid player... but just don't ask him to reach for anything ... you never know when those pecs will blow.
What's that you say? What defense are we playing...? .... Umm... heck if I know ... just run around and you'll figure it out ..."

I understand what you're saying and yes there's little pressure on these guys..but the scouting has a lot more to do with it.These teams really know what type of players they want and they go get them. Browns just seem to try and fit players in their scheme even if they aren't compatible. When the Browns ran the 34 ,Phil didn't draft 34 players,he brought in guys who should be in a 43. Gini did the same.Even the FA's didn't fit.
