this is pretty pathetic

Kirk Herbstreit and his family moved out of central Ohio yesterday, a change that the ESPN college football analyst said he had pondered for three years. Herbstreit said the move to Nashville, Tenn., was because of the constant criticism he has received from a vocal minority of Ohio State fans who don't understand that his job at the network demands objectivity and fairness.

"Nobody loves Ohio State more than me," said Herbstreit, a former Buckeyes quarterback. "I still have a picture of Woody Hayes and my dad (Jim, a former OSU player) in my office, and nobody will do more than I do for the university behind the scenes. But I've got a job to do, and I'm going to continue to be fair and objective. To continue to have to defend myself and my family in regards to my love and devotion to Ohio State is unfair."

Herbstreit said he and his wife, Allison, visited several cities before deciding on Nashville. He will continue to do his Monday radio show on WBNS-FM (97.1) in the fall.

"From a sports perspective, this is rough," he said. "I love Ohio State. Love the Blue Jackets. Love the Reds. Those are my hobbies. I don't like moving. I love living here. I don't want to leave. But I just can't do this anymore. I really can't keep going like this.

"Eighty to ninety percent of the Ohio State fans are great. It's the vocal minority that make it rough. They probably represent only 5 to 10 percent of the fan base, but they are relentless."

He picked a nice city to move to.

Does this mean Vanderbilt has a shot at high profile games

"Columbus", Ohio state fans are nuts. Let's say you only have 100 units of fandom to work with. Being from NE Ohio I would go

40 browns 22 cavs 22 Indians 16 osu

If you live in central Ohio and don't like hockey, you are 100 Ohio state, and that makes some people crazy.

Pathetic that Kirk bowed to the pressure, or that there was pressure from some idiots,....?

I would think that for as fine a job (as I feel) KH does, most respectful fans understand the nuances of his job. That he resided and was raising his family in Columbus should have been good enough an answer to the goon squad.

Compare his levelheaded, non-partisan approach to that of Mark May, for example.

I love Kirk Herbstreit, because of his objectiveness.

Most probably do.. but when you have a wife and kids that are living in the community, shopping, going to school, playing sports.. it doesn't take very many disrespectful ones before, as a husband and a father, you have to say enough is enough.. I'm not subjecting my family to this..

I've run into him in public twice. Made eye contact but never wanted to bother him. Both times he had this look that said, "PLEASE just keep moving, buddy."

This story doesn't surprise me at all. Sports fans at their worst are about as annoying as it gets. Central Ohio is a BAD place to be if you let that get to you.

Here's more ammo for Colin Cowherd . . .

I read this yesterday. And it's sad, if true.

But nowhere have I read of any examples of this bad behavior.

I mean, Kirk is a national TV personality and has/had a radio show in Columbus. Did he expect to remain incognito? I'm sure some fans were abusive but if he thinks it's gonna change all that much just because he moved he may be in for a surprise.

Nashville is a nice town. I've been there many times. Hope he likes it there. I'm sure the lower taxes didn't hurt, either.

That was a WHOLE LOT of pressure from a WHOLE LOT of idiots, who are the only ones pathetic in this scenario.

Pathetic that people would attack this man, and his family, because he may not always side with the buckeyes. Just look at the death threats the attorney that notified tressel has received. Some of these folks need to get a life. It's just a game at the end of the day.

Funny thing, some of the "craziest" osu fans Ive met in c bus didn't even go to Ohio State. I guess that would require a certain level of intelligence that prevented them from letting Kirk live peacefully in Columbus.

I also had a brush with good ole' Kirk, in the parking lot of Huffman's market in Upper Arlington....
I was just doing my job and walking to my work truck when out of nowhere a big black bmw four door nearly killed me as it came within inches of knocking me right out of my shoes as it careened into a tight turn and parked about ten feet from me. As I was counting my blessings to be alive, the person got out and started to walk in my general direction....like a fool I mistakenly thought he was going to come ask if I was ok or apologize for the close call.
It was then that I recognized Hollywood Kirk in dark sunglasses and speaking to someone on his cell phone, and as I stood there like a moron thinking he was about to make eye contact or just acknowledge that he nearly killed me, he walked right on by and through the parking lot into the store. my "brush off" with fame I guess.

Yes, when it comes to the family, I have no problem with him doing this.

'nuff said right there.

A shame that the idiots run out the good ones every time. Wonder why it doesn't flow the other way.

I lived in the Columbus area from 96 to 99. The amount of knucklehead fans are unbelievable. If Herbie didn't pick the Buckeyes to win it all every year he was a hater.
