Not sure if this should go here or in Pure Football, refs please move if wrong.

Marty Schottenheimer close to UFL gig

Barring a last-minute snag in negotiations, Marty Schottenheimer will become the latest former NFL coach to run a United Football League franchise, this time with the expansion Virginia Destroyers, according to sources.

Schottenheimer, 67, has not coached since he was unceremoniously fired by the San Diego Chargers after a 14-2 season in 2006, primarily because of a dysfunctional relationship with general manager A.J. Smith. His career record as an NFL head coach is 200-126-1, sixth on the all-time list.

With the Destroyers, Schottenheimer won't have to answer to a GM because he will have the dual role if negotiations between him and the team are finalized, sources said.

The team is scheduled play the 2011 season at the Virginia Beach Sports Plex. It has been a rocky expansion start in which two coaches and a GM have made exits in recent months, including Jay Gruden's departure to become the Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator and GM Doug Williams accepting the head coach position at his alma mater, Grambling.

If Schottenheimer is formally introduced as coach this week, he is expected to name a former NFL assistant, Paul Hackett, as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, sources said.

Aside from Jerry Glanville being named the new coach for the Hartford Colonials on Monday, the UFL has had discussions about adding a sixth franchise in Chattanooga, Tenn. Former NFL veteran assistant Jim Bates and his son, Jeremy, who was offensive coordinator in Denver and Seattle in recent years, are candidates to land there, sources said.

Chris Mortensen is ESPN's senior NFL analyst.

Hmmm with Glanville and Shotty coaching maybe this will be worth watching if the lockout drags on.

last year the games were on Versus and HDNet. They weren't very good even with Jim Fassel and Dennis Green on the sidelines and some "name" players like Jeff Garcia suiting up. Their hope is that they can grab some of the lower tier NFL guys and possibly a bunch of UDFA's if the NFL shoots themselves in the foot with a prolonged lockout.

Funny how these leagues tend to pop up around a time of a work stoppage in the NFL.

Too bad the browns couldn't convince him to come back. I always liked the guy.

We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.
