Got a new laptop today; not really a laptop I guess, but more of a desktop replacement (even though I didn't have a desktop to replace ). Dell M6500 "Covet" laptop which just happens to be orange 2GHz Intel i7 quad core processor 8GB RAM 2 256GB Solid State hard drives (the most exciting piece of the machine to me!) 17" 1920x1200 LED LCD display 1GB NVIDIA Quadro graphics card Blu-Ray drive/burner w/ double layer BD write capability. Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit Several other bells and whistles (built in webcam, finger print reader, SD card reader) I'm also running VMWare with Windows XP (still do some 16-bit stuff that doesn't play well with Windows 7 64 bit) and SuSE Linux on another. Still getting it setup which will take a while but I'm getting there. It is odd not hearing a hard drive hitting when the disk is being accessed. Can't wait to start doing some real work on it to see how it performs!

No - I need the space; 256GB isn't enough space for everything I need to put on the laptop.

I figured a possible striped config...
I always go with mirroring...but seeing the size of the HD's I was assuming striped...
I was wondering basically because with the Solid States being so fast as they are...I wondered if it would make any difference good or bad...

How fast does that monstrosity boot up? Pretty fast would be my guess Been thinking about snagging a smaller SSD for my desktop to run windows and a computer game or two ...

I'm sorry your harddrives are only 256g each. I have 2 320's in my HP and it came stock. I haven't needed to do any upgrading on mine yet.
Is it duo-core? Just curious. I won't use anything that isn't triple-core processor anymore. This HP I have is unfreakingbelievable.
320GB SSD's ??

The hard drives are solid state meaning no moving parts though. Kinda like a memory stick only a lot bigger. My current laptop has a terabyte (2 500GB drives) in it so needless to say I had to do some housekeeping to get everything onto the new one. I got a smokin deal on this computer - the solid state drives alone are a $700 a piece option on this laptop. The chip is a 2GHz quad core

"2GHz Intel i7 quad core processor"
Do we need to teach you how to read again?
On a side note, I threw a SSD in my desktop I built a year ago and windows 7 booted up in 20 seconds.

10 seconds to get through the Bios with a memory check (2 seconds if bypassed) Another 15 seconds to get to the Windows 7 logon Swipe finger on print reader - another 10 seconds to load other software I have starting at startup. So, 35 seconds till I can hit the start menu

I see you have the back lit keyboard but does it have the rubberized finger print resistant exterior?

I've got 2 2TB Western Digital units already - that's what I moved most of the stuff to that I don't use as often. Had to cut down my music collection on the HD and put some of my less listened to stuff elsewhere. I also have a media/web server with a 1TB on it. I've got plenty of space, just not as much when I'm travelling now. I think it will be worth it though!

I already lugged a 17" laptop around - the only thing that I don't like about this one is the power supply The thing weighs about 2-3lbs and is massive I also have a smaller 14" laptop that I carry with it in my backpack. I usually have 1-2 books in it as well. No need for a gym for me, just need to carry my laptop backpack around for a while.

I have a small SSD (64GB) in my i7 desktop with a terabyte drive for archive space. I use the SSD to boot and use common programs. Its great being able to be aggressive with sleep mode and have it idle sucking up almost no power then instant access. At work I have a bigger 80GB SSD which is just a godsend for compiling the mass of code we have there... C++ takes a while to build

So adding a SSD to an existing rig, even a "smaller" one, is something that you would recommend for someone who's a moderate gamer and extensive photoshopper?

Yep. Use it to install your programs on and store files elsewhere.

I also compile a lot of C++ as well as other software (C# and some Clarion) and the compile times are awesome. I'm not much of a gamer, but I have begun to play around with the NVIDIA CUDA library for using the video card as a platform for processing mathematical intense business logic. The NVIDIA card on my new laptop has 128 CUDA cores and threading out math operations to that should provide a nice performance increase when crunching numbers. Also looking to couple that with the .NET PLINQ classes possibly.
