Finally. A total of 32 compensatory choices in the 2011 NFL Draft have been awarded to 23 teams, the NFL announced Friday. Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32 compensatory choices announced today will supplement the 221 choices in the seven rounds of the 2011 NFL Draft (April 28-30), which will kick off in primetime for the second consecutive year. The first round will be held on Thursday, April 28 and begin at 8 p.m. ET. The second and third rounds are set for Friday, April 29 at 6 p.m. ET followed by rounds 4-7 on Saturday, April 30 at Noon ET. This year, the compensatory picks will be positioned within the third through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost. Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula. Three clubs this year (Oakland, Seattle and New Orleans) will each receive a compensatory pick even though they did not suffer a net loss of compensatory free agents last year. Under the formula, the compensatory free agents lost by these clubs were ranked higher than the ones they signed (by a specified point differential based upon salary and performance). Twenty one compensatory picks were awarded to clubs based upon the compensatory pick formula. By rule, 11 additional choices were awarded at the end of the seventh round to bring the total number of compensatory selections to 32, equaling the number of NFL clubs. The 11 additional picks were awarded to Carolina, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Denver, Cleveland, Arizona, San Francisco, Tennessee, Dallas, Washington and Houston based upon the 2011 draft selection order. Following are the compensatory free agents lost and signed last year by the clubs that will receive compensatory picks in the 2011 NFL Draft: Baltimore Ravens Lost: Justin Bannan, Dwan Edwards Carolina Panthers Lost: A.J. Feeley, Julius Peppers Green Bay Packers Lost: Aaron Kampman Kansas City Chiefs Lost: Wade Smith Miami Dolphins Lost: Nathan Jones, Jason Taylor Signed: Karlos Dansby Minnesota Vikings Lost: Artis Hicks, Chester Taylor New Orleans Saints Lost: Scott Fujita Signed: Jimmy Wilkerson New York Giants Lost: David Carr, Fred Robbins Oakland Raiders Lost: Cornell Green Signed: Kyle Boller Philadelphia Eagles Lost: Jason Babin, Sean Jones San Diego Chargers Lost: Brandon Manumaleuna, Kassim Osgood San Francisco 49ers Lost: Arnaz Battle, Tony Pashos Signed: David Carr Seattle Seahawks Lost: Nate Burleson Signed: Ben Hamilton Tampa Bay Buccaneers Lost: Will Allen, Jimmy Wilkerson Signed: Sean Jones Tennessee Titans Lost: Alge Crumpler, Kyle Vanden Bosch Signed: Jason Babin

Looks to me like we received a 7th round comp pick that we get at the end of the 7th round. I was hoping for something exciting, this is kinda disappointing

Compensatory for what? Two of the picks given in this were for players we signed. It's like getting a free priority free agent. I'm certainly not going to complain about it.

I think we got the pick because the Jets signed Brodney Pool.

Read the article. We essentially got the pick for no reason at all except to even out the number of picks in the round. Quote:

What pick was Marques Colston again all?
This is awesome and we can't look it in the mouth. Do we want to "draft" a developmental quarterback? This assures we get a late rounder that we dont have to fight over with other teams. Or we pick up the best kicker on the board? Or how about drafting one more guy that we like? The overall point is that we had the chance to bring in 7 really good players this morning ... and now we have the chance to bring in 8. I don't see why anyone would be purely excited, but I don't see how anyone can complain about this.

Exactly. Or it's a player that otherwise would have been an un-drafted free agent, who ultimately could pick what team he wants to try out for.
How people can complain about a free pick is beyond me.

Yeah .... but in reality the only thing it really does is give us a sure shot at an UDFA type instead of having to compete for him in FA after the draft.

Well it also allows us to spend the pick on a guy we would have wanted to draft late (still targeting a late round qb or what have you) and then feel just a little more free to trade around like we did last year (3rd and 2 5ths to move up for hardesty).
If this compensatory pick is part of the difference between us trading our 3rd and a 6th to get back into the second ... or our 4th and a sixth to get back in the third and take a solid player ... it's completely free and we didn't give up anything to get it.

Compensatory picks cant be traded....but it's good to have a 7th rounder, believe it or not...there's still some talent on the board

Yea... That's pretty much what I said.
And what is wrong with that? I know they are diamonds in the rough, but it just increases the chances of getting a Cribbs, Welker, Pat Williams, Antonio Gates, etc.
Again, why people are complaining about a free pick blows my mind.

It's nice ..... in the way it's nice if a restaurant offers mac and cheese as a side dish in addition to mashed potatoes and cole slaw. lol It's nice .... but rarely life changing.

If you put it that way, it depends what end of the spectrum you are on.
If you are a bum constantly searching for your next meal (The Browns) you would be exited about that mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, and cole slaw. If you are rich, and always dining on filet mignon, and lobster (The Patriots) well, not so much.

it's not looking a gift horse in the mouth as much as it is some comic relief by way of sarcasm.
Perhaps we can find a back-up DL or an interior OL?
I like the best kicker still available idea.
Phil seems like he wants to move on.

Can we trade it as a comp pick award? We need camp fodder, but this is an almost sure cut, no?

Just clicking
I've always wondered if we would ever get one, now that we have, I don't know why? LOL
But Purp,, thanks for explaining it.
As far as what to do with the pick, It's so far down in the draft, just take the best of what's left and let the chips fall where they may. Maybe we get a winner.. who knows.

After the draft there is always a mad rush to sign a few UDFA players.
Now we get to draft one and don't have to hope we get to him first with the best offer..
The kicker idea has merit....for me.....just draft the fastest human you can find....maybe not even a football player.

With the new kickoff length no one would ever start anywhere but the twenty against us.

The quetion becomes do we see guys like costanzo and ventrone (who are very good special teams players) end up getting cast aside for more "pure" players now that the special teams (or at least the kickoff) could be just a little less important? We might continue to draft purely developmental guys and keep them in house than have 3 to 5 positions devoted to emergency backups that are primarily ST players ...

The only drawback to selecting a kicker is we would almost have to plan on keeping two on the roster.
We aren't going to cut Dawson at this point and if we stuck a kicker on the PS...a team with any problem at kicker is going to check teams PS players before they go to the street.
I doubt we could stuff a kicker there and him last the entire season without getting picked up by another club.

Phil was obviously looking forward to free agency. the franchise tag is just for one year, right?
Why not bring in a few of the top kickers for workouts and interviews and use that extra pick to solidify that position for the next decade plus?
Go ahead and cut Dawson after the draft since that is what he seems to want.
it's a win-win

Cleveland gets one! OK I'm thinking, 4th round late 4th round, Finaly a pick for Cleveland, they did something right in this current set up of rules. 7th round pick 247! Ridiculous , more of the unlevel playing field in favor of the Krafts, the Jones' the Cleveland Browns are the Have Not's as far as ownership advantage, and don't you forget it. Is this more of a slap in the face, or a mockery of Browns fans passion? Either way, it is another year of an unlevel playing field, that's how I see it. Hey it doesn't matter because there is a lockout!

We always wind up signing more free agents than we have leave to sign elsewhere.
Thus we get no compensatory picks ....... Because there is nothing to compensate us for.

Yeah we thought Pool (our doctors) should retire due to multiple concussions and released him and the jets promptly sign him. I thought that was Dirty pool and the NFL should have stepped in and nixed the deal or forced the jets to properly compensate the browns for a player released due to medical conditions.
If the NFL is serious about health concerns and the Browns thought Brodney Pools health was such a concern that under the advisement of their doctors he should retire due to multiple concussions why should the jets be allowed to scarf up this player whom they would have to trade or compensate the Browns for if not due to health concerns. pool was a second rounder and STARTED while we were saddled with Zip Code Elam whose coverage skills often left the middle wide open.

First off, while it's very true that the Browns let Pool get away because of any number of reasons, but most likely his concussions, it has NO bearing on what the player or other teams do.
The Jets most definitly had Pool take a physical and he apparently passed it or he'd not have been signed. The jets did thier due diligence on the kid and he came up ok to play.
As for your comment on Elam, he wasn't nearly as bad as you portray him to be.
First there was HAM SANDWICH
Next was SOS (stuck on stupid)
And now "Zip Code"

That's my feeling... since we havn't gotten one since I don't know when... I'll take an extra draft pick even if it's for a guy who most likely won't make the active squad.
