Good lord, 10 million dollars to fight one news channel. When will Soros and co. get the message that FOXnews isn't the source of the public's discontent. Do they actually think this will lower FOX's ratings one iota?
The liberal group Media Matters has quietly transformed itself in preparation for what its founder, David Brock, described in an interview as an all-out campaign of “guerrilla warfare and sabotage” aimed at the Fox News Channel.
The group, launched as a more traditional media critic, has all but abandoned its monitoring of newspapers and other television networks and is narrowing its focus to Fox and a handful of conservative websites, which its leaders view as political organizations and the “nerve center” of the conservative movement. The shift reflects the centrality of the cable channel to the contemporary conservative movement, as well as the loathing it inspires among liberals — not least among the donors who fund Media Matters’ staff of about 90, who are arrayed in neat rows in a giant war room above Massachusetts Avenue.
“The strategy that we had had toward Fox was basically a strategy of containment,” said Brock, Media Matters’ chairman and founder and a former conservative journalist, adding that the group’s main aim had been to challenge the factual claims of the channel and to attempt to prevent them from reaching the mainstream media.
The new strategy, he said, is a “war on Fox.”
In an interview and a 2010 planning memo shared with POLITICO, Brock listed the fronts on which Media Matters — which he said is operating on a $10 million-plus annual budget — is working to chip away at Fox and its parent company, News Corp. They include its bread-and-butter distribution of embarrassing clips and attempts to rebut Fox points, as well as a series of under-the-radar tactics.
Media Matters, Brock said, is assembling opposition research files not only on Fox’s top executives but on a series of midlevel officials. It has hired an activist who has led a successful campaign to press advertisers to avoid Glenn Beck’s show. The group is assembling a legal team to help people who have clashed with Fox to file lawsuits for defamation, invasion of privacy or other causes. And it has hired two experienced reporters, Joe Strupp and Alexander Zaitchik, to dig into Fox’s operation to help assemble a book on the network, due out in 2012 from Vintage/Anchor. (In the interest of full disclosure, Media Matters last month also issued a report criticizing “Fox and Friends” co-host Steve Doocy’s criticism of this reporter’s blog.)
Brock said Media Matters also plans to run a broad campaign against Fox’s parent company, News Corp., an effort which most likely will involve opening a United Kingdom arm in London to attack the company’s interests there. The group hired an executive from MoveOn.org to work on developing campaigns among News Corp. shareholders and also is looking for ways to turn regulators in the U.S., U.K., and elsewhere against the network.
The group will “focus on [News Corp. CEO Rupert] Murdoch and trying to disrupt his commercial interests — whether that be here or looking at what’s going on in London right now,” Brock said, referring to News Corp.’s — apparently successful — move to take a majority stake in the satellite broadcaster BSkyB. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0311/51949.html#ixzz1Hrwbk5x9
And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul. - John Muir
Why do people hate FOX and "conservatism" so much??
If you don''t like FOX, then don't watch it. If you don't like conservatism them don't vote for conservatives.
Or you could be a big douche and use your money and influence to push your views on the rest of America. I always thought liberals were all about free press.
Quote: Why do people hate FOX and "conservatism" so much??
The same reason you posted a video by a 13 year old girl and called it 'scary'.
The propaganda that FOX peddles is ignorance fed to the easily manipulated. It appeals to the lowest common denominator, and that appeal is frighteningly high.
And I agree with both of you. It's incredibly stupid to fight it with such a fervor, especially when you're preaching to the choir.
FOX lies and is biased propaganda. Stop the presses!
Media Matters don't attack any of the the other slanted, biased and dishonest news networks. I don't see NBC or CBS or ABC in their coverage...
jfan...but you miss the point...does FOX NEWS LIE?
A recent story credited to a former Fox News employee claims that at Fox News, "stuff is just made up" and that Fox News is "purely a partisan operation".
jfan...if media matters is not telling the truth about Fox News, that would be an issue....
...BUT...if you want to complain about the money Soros is "spending" to expose the "fact" that Fox News lies, what about the money behind the outfit that just makes "stuff" up?
...what about Rupert Murdoch funding the lying crap that comes from his media empire?
Personally, I could care less about Soros spending money to expose Murdoch's lies.
Who gives a rats behind what FOX does. I don't watch FOX. I hardly watch television news period. I find them all to sensationalize everything, and seldom can give an objective view or even enough information to form my own objective view of an event.
Let's face it, television news/media is quickly becoming more of a reality TV show than a news center. They are not interested in reporting the facts of an event, but merely in entertaining the masses to increase ratings.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.
Just keep in mind mac that the only reason Fox News exists is because the rest of the mainstream media had drifted so far left that it created a vacuum from the center to the right... Had every major network, every cable network, and 90% of the major newspapers not become unapologetic liberal supporters, Fox News wouldn't exist...

Mac, is it like a business model for these entities? I mean it seems to be intensely crucial to sell it, have it repeated, and put the most negative slants possible on it. Not un-American, it is anti-American when one groups views need to be forced preferably at the expense of an opponent. We could use some people who can build something for America. My favorite: "Critics are legless men who teach running." Produce.

Quote: Like I said, the sad part is, so many Fox News listeners choke down the lies, knowing they are lies, and peddle that crap as if it were the truth
Have any specific examples?
What's really sad is that NBC, CBS and all the rest do the exact same thing ... but apparently their listeners aren't smart enough to realize it, cause they only whine about Fox doing it.
I do know that Fox hasn't had a major news anchor fired because he broke a story about the President due to a mysterious memo from the '60's typed up on Microsoft Word ... or had to read an on air apology to a major car manufacturer because they rigged their gas tanks to explode.

An ANONYMOUS inside source reports this to Media Matters and that is your proof? A nameless person allegedly reports to an outfit whose stated mission is to bring down Fox News and you quote it as if its fact.....
when the radiation crap was going on in Japan, fox news called the people in cali who were taking iodine pills "sad and pathetic" while nbc was urging people to take them.
the truth always lies between the far right (like fox news) and the far left (like nbc)

This sums up the problem with news channels. We are talking about pundits (some paid) and not the actual news readers. I saw two medical experts on Fox and one did say what you posted. The only way they can cover 24 hours a day is with sensationalized stories with commentary from pundits and opinion shows.
Even though mac disagrees, I think I am smart enough to tell the difference. Phil is much more on target. It isn't so much blatant bias but the use of certain words or phrases that are leading.

Every? 90%?
We don't have a single 'liberal' or 'left' major news outlet in this country. Not one.
If we did, Obama would've been getting lambasted since just about the day he took office. Instead, you've got every network covering the guy's behind, and then FOX blasting him non-sensically.

You are wrong. You have many news outlets fawning over the image and idealism of what they think Obama is or what they thought he would be (or what they hope he will be soon)... take your pick.
Chris Matthews, MSNBC, most major newspapers and the rest of them absolutely do espouse a liberal world view, the fact that they can't see that Obama is not the president they had hoped he would be (or at least he isn't yet) doesn't change the left leaning nature of the news outlet.

I don't disagree with you at all, but then that really isn't liberal or left-leaning, is it? It's merely pandering to the notion of it. It's propaganda.
FOX is similar. It's not a conservative news network, but it panders to an ideal of what they've constructed conservatism to be.
When you get an *actual* liberal or conservative viewpoint, it's often coming from a Kucinich or a Ron Paul who may as well have the word "kook" underneath their names.
A liberal or left-leaning viewpoint would've hammered Obama every step of the way. Subsidizing banks, letting the insurance and pharm companies print themselves a golden ticket, squirming on D.A.D.T., not closing Guantanamo, maintaining the status quo in Iraq and Afghanistan, bombing Libya, working sweetheart deals for G.E. .... I could go on and on and on and on and on.
They don't hammer him on it. They write him passes.
There are actually left-leaning or liberal publications, organizations, articles, etc. that do hammer the guy, but they're nowhere near the mainstream because genuine liberal or conservative ideas aren't let anywhere near the mainstream.
Tripping over yourself to excuse Obama isn't a liberal or left-leaning viewpoint.
It is a war against propaganda that airs on the right wing propaganda network.
Fox news is nothing but propaganda channel by the ultra-right wing. There are no facts to be found on that station. If Obama says it is a cloudy day in Washington DC, Faux will go off and have experts dicuss how it is only partly cloudy and how Obama is a terrible president because he confused partly cloudy for cloudy. Then, Glenn Beck will discuss how a cloudy day in Washington DC is a sure sign that the world is ending and how you can save yourself by buying gold.

excel...that is bunch of your radical rw crap...no other news outfit lies as much and to the degree that Fox News does.
They just make "stuff" up excel...Fox News make crap up and peddles it and you obviously choke it down and spread it like the good RW you are...but make no mistake about it, you are spreading lies...Foxs News'' lies.
I just threw those screenshots up there because they are so comical yet demonstrative. I'll admit that FOX does have some clever ways of delivering progoganda, yet sometimes they just go overboard with it. For example, whenever there is a major scandal involving a republican that they have to cover, they will just list the name with (D) on the ticker instead. Most people just don't know the political affiliation of out of state congressmen (nor am I claiming they should).
I've said this before, being what I consider a moderate in the political sense, my problem with FOX isn't that they are coming from the right, it is the asanine manner in which they do it. There are countless examples of this type of nonsense, and from what I've seen, it only goes in one direction
Quote: excel...that is bunch of your radical rw crap...no other news outfit lies as much and to the degree that Fox News does.
LOL ... MY radical rw crap??
You are so full of crap that hazmat has to send a team to check up on you daily.
I just gave you TWO examples of other networks broadcasting full-on lies. You respond with a boringass video that drags on for 4 minutes that boils down to this ... "Obama said something that sounds he like advocates socialism. I don't really think he will but I'll say he does anyway." I guess that qualifies as a major "lie" in Democratic Puppet Cheerleader world ... but it's nowhere CLOSE to something like ... Oh I don't know, strapping an explosive device on a car to make it blowup in a collision (Dateline NBC) ... or producing a non-verified memo that says Bush did something in the '60s that he didn't (Dan Rather) ... you know actual LEGAL slander/libel ... not just opinionated slants.
Has a major Fox anchor lost his job for libel or slander? Has Fox ever been sued and lost for fabricating something? And if you honestly think that nobody at CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, or any of your favorite websites never say anything unfavorable towards certain people ... even if they don't completely believe it ... then tell your colon hello while your up there. Then again, maybe they're as completely brainwashed as some Democratic supporters apparently are.
Quote: They just make "stuff" up excel...Fox News make crap up and peddles it and you obviously choke it down and spread it like the good RW you are
Apparently reading isn't your strong suit either. I put, right there in my post, clear as day, that I *do not* watch Fox News. Yet, you're the one still accusing me of watching it, choking it down and spreading it ... so who's the one lying now?
Quote: Can you provide the link to the source of these two images? These look like faked photoshop images.
I just pulled the images off a google image search, but that's the point-- they are faked photoshop images. i.e. FOX aired the pictures in order to discredit the men, and made no reference to the photoshopping on air.
I wouldn't even say they are photo shopped, as much as they are just stretch height wise, which could easily be the guy who inputs the photo's into the clip segments error.
Often these things are pasted into preset scenes, and the image specs may have been different than the photo's, at which point the software would stretch-to-fit. If done on the fly like may of these segments are, they don't take the time to preview or correct minor issues. Ever see the wrong video clip or photo for a story? Same concept.

Here is a great explanation of the dynamics that take place in these types of threads. It also serves as an explanation as to why y'all don't see very many posts of mine in here.
It's a read well worth your time. I'm sure you'll see your fellow Dawgs in it somewhere.
Interesting that this source is more on-point than the whole of the so-called mainstream media and other "reputable" sources....
Quote: That is being optimistic, especially when you look at how specifically the teeth are yellowed, eyes blackened, etc.
Oh, it's definatly photoshopped ... and one of the reasons why I can't stand Fox News. They take the "bad habits" of other news agencies and just one up it. Usually the standard procedure is to take the most unflattering picture possible, throw in some unflattering filters and contrast, and run with that as the main photo. Still, we're talking about profile pictures used for an overlay graphic ... this is the best 'coup de grace' that people can come up with on Fox?
Photoshopping is nothing new either ... here's a few actual news photos that were photoshopped. Guess we should shut down Time, the AP, Reuters, the LA Times and a few other media outlets as well?
It's a tip of the iceberg sort of thing.. 1 single case might not matter much, but when there is such a long and consistent history of things like that, it becomes painfully obvious that they are anything but 'fair and balanced' as they claim to be.
Here are some more images that anyone can look up in under a minute with basic google searches (linked in one of my above posts):
Of course, all 3 of these guys are republican. Hey, there are major scanalds from both political parties. I'm not taking either side on that. But isn't it convenient how, whenever there is a major scandal involving a republican, fox just subtley lists them as a (D) anyway? We'll just say that this would be quite a coincidence to make the same mistake over, and over, and over...
