Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner will make Cleveland his home this fall, son will attend St. Ignatius
Published: Tuesday, March 29, 2011
By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer

John Kuntz/The Plain DealerRandy Lerner, who grew up in Cleveland, will return here so his son can attend St. Ignatius.
CLEVELAND -- Browns owner Randy Lerner will move back to Cleveland in the fall, but not for more hands-on involvement with the team, he told The Plain Dealer on Tuesday.

Lerner, 49, will make Cleveland his home base instead of Long Island, N.Y. because his son, Max, will enter St. Ignatius High School as a freshman in August.

"This has nothing to do with the Cleveland Browns or my role with the Browns,'' said Lerner. "I couldn't be happier with the professional management team in place. My spending more time here is to support my son, who's made the decision to attend St. Ignatius.''

Lerner, who's divorced, said Max became familiar with St. Ignatius from spending so much time in Cleveland and with the Browns over the years. He also heard great things about the school from Browns Senior Vice President of Security Lew Merletti, whose two sons graduated from there. His son, Matt, played football for St. Ignatius and now plays for former Browns coach Butch Davis at North Carolina.

Lerner, who grew up in Shaker Heights, said he'll live on the West Side to be close to St. Ignatius. He said he's been spending about two days a week in Cleveland since assuming control of the team in 2002 and now that will increase. He'll still spend time in New York, where his three other children live with his ex-wife, Lara. He'll also travel back and forth to England, where he owns the Aston Villa soccer team of the Premier League.

Lerner said his role with the Browns has much more to do with league matters than the day-to-day operation of the team and that he's happy to let club President Mike Holmgren run the show. He said he's been thrilled with the job General Manager Tom Heckert has done and that he's excited about new head coach Pat Shurmur.

Lerner declined to discuss the lockout, but said he has been involved in league meetings.

Hope they send a Welcome Wagon. I see it as a good thing for the local economy especially. Hope Max has success! Go Browns!

A non-story, IMO.

The only value is that it is likely to mean that he will be paying city taxes here. Beyond that, this story is a pointless waste of electrons.

Personally I don't care if he lives in Cleveland or not.

Having read other peoples opinion on the matter the last several years I thought they might be interested and passed it along..

Oh, I understand. I was just making a general comment.

I never did understand why it matters to some where he lives or where he spends his time as long as he's spending his money. Whether or not he's in a press box at CBS has absolutely zero impact on what happens on the field, yet people have for years gotten their panties in a bunch over it.

I wonder how familiar Randy is with Cleveland's near west side ... not very, I'm guessing.

What's wrong with Strongsville or Westlake.. Some very nice homes over there.

True, but I'm guessing a place like Moreland Hills is a bit more suited to Randy's expectations.

Believe it or not, Moreland Hills isn't all that and a bag of chips anymore. But I get your drift.

Strongsville or Westlake are nice communities, although Strongsville would be a hike to West 30th & Lorain. Mostly, I was just amusing myself with the idea of Lerner buying an old colonial on a 40 X 100 lot in the neighborhood surrounding St Iggy, shopping at the Market, having lunch at the Hot Dog Inn, and then hitting the Big Egg after the bars close ...

I know the guy is rich beyond my imagination - but it doesn't sound like an ideal situation.

So he spends a couple few days a week in Cleveland. Okay - he has nannies - whatever you want to call them - to take care and watch his son here in Cleveland when he's gone.. How is that good for the kid? Being raised by someone else.....

Then he has 3 kids in New York. Now, perhaps they are older - I don't know and the article didn't say. But, it did say the 3 other kids live with his ex - their mom, so I doubt they are all adults.

So, he'll spend time in Cleveland with one son, New York with his other kids, and also time in England.

Like I said, the financial part probably isn't a problem for him. What about being a dad? I don't care how "rich" you are.

You mean Modell? No, he lived in Shaker Heights and then Daisy Hill which is pretty high end if memory serves. Daisy hill is in a area known as Hunting Valley. Very well to do.

Another place that Lerner could move is on the Gold Coast.

That doesn't change though. He's been spending time in all 3 places already. So, all that really changes is his "permanent" address.

Yeah - I didn't think of that. My bad.

My question is what kind of "dad" is he? Or any rich beyond belief person. Hiring someone to take care of your kids is great - but kids need parents - not baby sitters. At least in my world.

How is that anyone's business but his family's, and who the hell are any of us to judge that?
Moreover, what the hell does it have to do with anything? It's almost like you're just searching for a justification to hate on the guy.

I agree. The "sacrifices" that you have to make in order to get to be super-rich (or maintain that status) are not worth it to me. I'd rather sacrifice not being in that class to live a 'better' life.

Hold on there - I'm not hating on anyone. I don't see where this is a story either - but it was posted. Posted because some gripe and complain that Lerner doesn't spend enough time in Cleveland.

As an owner - a hands off owner - I don't care where he spends his time, as long as he signs the check. You will note that I didn't mention anything about the Browns in my post, won't you?

My comment was more directed at the family life. Having a kid in Cleveland, 3 in New York, and splitting his time between those 2 cities and England.

That's really all I was getting at. As I said - not an ideal situation IN MY OPINION.

Actually, Modell lived in Waite Hill. His house was right across the street from the tee-box of hole #14 at Kirtland Country Club. He was not a member of KCC, but that is where he lived.

I misunderstood, my bad... but my point still stands. Parents get divorced all the time. What kind of a Dad is the guy that only gets to see his kids every other weekend? Is that guy less of a Dad because of it?

No, not at all.

But when the dad OR mom shrugs off parenting responsibilities - yeah, they need to think twice about it.

In this situation - it's great the kid gets to choose which city and school he's going to attend. It's sad that he'll be spending 3-4-5-6-7 days without any parent.

Nothing IMO, but I spent most of my childhood and schooling living in Bay Village, so I am a Westsider all the way.

George Steinbrenner and his family lived in Bay, so it couldn't be called slumming.

I don't know it it is quite like that, but he does allow the people he hires to be in charge run things. He expects that.

Here is a story I'll share.

Not too long ago I was wearing my Browns windbreaker and started talking to a guy who saw what I was wearing and said he went to college with Lerners pilot. This guy might be in his late 30's or early 40's.

To make a long story short as we talked a good 30-40 minutes, he said Lerner with all his trips in his new jet to go overseas wanted telephone reception and told the pilot to get whatever it took.

Evidently it was going to take a satellite system that was going to cost about 140K.

The pilot called Lerner to tell him and Lerner told him, you are in charge of the jet. You don't have to call me with such details.

All is consistent. Randy allows his people to manage their domain. He doesn't micro-manage. You are paid to do a job and oversee a part of his life....do it.

Good.

I hope he continues to learn more about Cleveland and he takes in a game or two in person this year.
