Oy... 14-0 in the 4th. We need a mercy rule. Badly.

For some there is no next year.

The fans that showed up should get a refund.

you know bob feller is up in heaven, sitting next to God, explaining how if he were still pitching, they definitely would not be down 14-0.

14-7 because Santana is a beast.

At least we owned 'em part time! LOLetc. Still, the "half a loaf" thang. Need to have SOMETHING for which to cheer.

15-9

Jack Hannahan is really our co-MVP of this game with Santana?

15-9. The boys are showing some resilience. Something to build on.

amazingly we have a 12-2 SO/BB rate going. has a team ever giving up 15 runs having a 6:1 SO:BB ratio?

He should. This has been his MO the last couple seasons. Get shelled one game, look like a Cy Young pitcher the next. This is why he always has a bunch of decisions (I think he was 13-14 the last two years).

Few fans and less pitching haunt Cleveland Indians in 8-3 loss to Chicago White Sox

By Paul Hoynes, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It is a long fall from 455 straight sellouts to the lowest single-game attendance in Progressive Field history. The Indians, however, finally made it.

Their second straight spanking by the Chicago White Sox, a 8-3 loss on Saturday, was viewed by 9,853 fans. It doesn't matter what you call it -- Jacobs Field, The Jake, Progressive Field, The Prog -- it was the smallest gathering to ever watch the Indians play a game in the still-pristine ballpark at the corner of Carnegie and Ontario.

A forecast of snow and rain, which never materialized, may have held down the crowd. The Indians' lopsided loss in the season opener Friday probably played a part as well. They were down, 14-0, after four innings before losing, 15-10.

The drop in attendance from Friday's sellout of 41,721 was startling, but familiar. This is how fans used to react to the team when it drifted aimlessly for almost 40 years at Municipal Stadium, the old parking lot on the shores of Lake Erie.

Travis Hafner, who homered and singled Saturday, never witnessed the sellout streak that started June 12, 1995 and ended April 4, 2001. He arrived in 2003, well after the streak brought over 19 million fans into the ballpark.

"You'd like to have fans like Friday's opening day crowd, which was awesome," said Hafner. "It's up to us to play well and get wins and get the fans excited about the team."

The Indians were last in attendance in the big leagues last year. Regarding the state of the team, and its appeal to fans, Hafner said, "I think we're in a good spot. We have a lot of young talent. I think the organization, starting this year, has a chance to be really good for a number of years."

Newcomers Jack Hannahan and Travis Buck felt right at home in front of Saturday's crowd. It reminded them of the pint-sized crowds they played in front of in Northern California.

"Coming from Oakland, where every crowd is small, this actually looked like a pretty good crowd," said Buck, who doubled in his first start in left field. "I'm sure the weather had something to do with it."

Buck spent parts of the last four years with the A's. Hannahan drove in two of the Tribe's three runs and had another strong game at third base. He spent parts of the 2007, 2008 and 2009 seasons with the A's.

"Cleveland fans are good fans," said Hannahan. "From the fan mail I get, I can tell they know baseball. This was like Oakland ... an Oakland crowd." ...

I have watched the first three games, almost in their entirety. A couple of observations:

This isn't to blame the umpires for losses b/c I thought the umps were consistent within a given game, but it drives me nuts that one umpire (opening day) has a strike zone where anything above the belt is a ball, and the next one calls strikes up to half way between the belt and numbers. The rules shouldn't change from one day to the next. I know this isn't going to change, but I just wanted to gripe about it.

Masterson looked good yesterday. He had the ChiSox hitters pounding the ball into the ground all day long. The triple play really helped defuse their only threat.

I'm not too worried about Carmona. He actually was hitting his spots pretty well, but more than a few of Chicago's hits were just excellent hitting. They were putting good swings on balls that were out of the zone even. They have a very potent lineup.

I'm a little more worried about Carrasco. A lot more of his hits were him missing and leaving the ball up, but he is also a lot younger. There will be growing pains, but he has very good stuff. With him I think this will be more mental growth.

Santana has good anticipation at first base. That triple play was a heck of a play. He made a couple of nice dig outs on bad throws too. He is one of the more polished young hitters I have seen in a long time. I like the kind of sneer he has on his face the whole time he is in the box. He has all the makings of at the very least an All Star, but his upper ceiling (IMO) is to be a top 10-15 player in the game.

I don't know if he can sustain it, but Hafner seems to have some pop back in his bat. He almost hit one out on Saturday on a shattered bat, and the one he did hit out was absolutely smoked.

LaPorta worries me. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and give him this year to work it out, but there are way too many defensive swings out of him and I feel like he is fooled almost every time up there.

Ok, who had April 8th in the Manny retires after getting busted for PEDs (again) in our pool?

Quote:

NEW YORK (AP) -- Tampa Bay Rays slugger Manny Ramirez told Major League Baseball on Friday that he is retiring after being notified of an issue that arose under MLB's drug policy.

The commissioner's office announced Ramirez's decision in a statement, but did not say whether he tested positive for a banned substance. Ramirez previously served a 50-game suspension for violating the drug policy while he was with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"Major League Baseball recently notified Manny Ramirez of an issue under Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program," the statement said. "Rather than continue with the process under the Program, Ramirez has informed MLB that he is retiring as an active player. If Ramirez seeks reinstatement in the future, the process under the Drug Program will be completed."

MLB said it would have no further comment.

"The Tampa Bay Rays were informed today by the Commissioner's Office that Manny Ramirez has decided to retire after being informed of an issue under the Drug Program," the Rays said in a statement. "We are obviously surprised and disappointed by this news. We will have no further comment on this matter, and our fans and organization will carry on."

The 38-year-old outfielder-designated hitter left the team earlier this week to attend to what the Rays called a family matter. Manager Joe Maddon said on Thursday that he expected Ramirez to be available for Friday night's game at the Chicago White Sox.

The 12-time All-Star agreed to a $2 million, one-year contract with the defending AL East champions in the offseason, hoping to re-establish himself as one of the game's feared hitters.

Ramirez hit .298 with nine homers and 42 RBIs in 90 games for the Dodgers and White Sox last season. He's a career .312 hitter with 555 home runs in 18-plus seasons, including some of his best seasons with the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox.

It is akin to having a different size hoop every night in the NBA. One of the worst situations in baseball, next to having the DH in only one league,....

Red Sox took 2 of 3 from the Yankees, with a gem from Josh Beckett last night.

Hopefully this gets the ball rolling for us. 2-7 is definitely not the start I was expecting.
