Sad state of affairs these days. But there are a few things to always remember.
1) always be aware of your surroundings.
2) know when someone is approaching you, and know your comfort buffer zone, and read their intentions through their body language and the situational surroundings.
3) be prepared to retreat to safety if that buffer zone is or is about to be breached.
and.....
4) If you can't retreat... 2 in the chest, call the police, then call your lawyer while waiting for the police.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

After reading that, I get the feeling that he was a target. What "straight-up thief" leaves a laptop in the car they just carjacked?

WOW, I missed that.. Yeah, this is looking to me like he was targeted by maybe Dimoras guys or someone. But targeted all the same.

While it is certainly a possible scenario, based solely on what is written I'd call that a Hollywood-inspired leap.
Either way, a good argument for concealed carry.
