Steelers Release Porter, Haynes; Tender Offers to Starks, St. Pierre
Thursday, March 1, 2007

Steelers Release Porter, Haynes; Tender Offers to Starks, St. Pierre

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers released veteran outside linebacker Joey Porter and running back Verron Haynes, the team announced today.

Porter, an eight-year veteran, was originally selected by the Steelers in the third round (73rd overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft out of Colorado State.

Porter started in 14 games in 2006, and finished the season tied for seventh on the team with 64 tackles (43 solo). He led the Steelers with seven quarterback sacks and intercepted two passes which tied for second on the team.

In eight seasons with the Steelers, Porter played in 122 games and made 106 starts. He recorded 498 tackles (374 solo) and 10 interceptions, and ranks fourth in team history with 60 quarterback sacks. Porter, who was the team's defensive co-captain since 2003, earned three trips to the Pro Bowl (2003, 2005 and 2006) and was voted Steelers' co-MVP in 2002.

Haynes was the Steelers' fifth round draft choice in 2002 (166th overall). He played seven games in 2006 before being placed on the reserve/injured list with a knee injury versus Oakland (Oct. 29). Haynes played in 60 games with the Steelers and rushed for 738 yards and three touchdowns on 174 carries (4.2 avg.).

The Steelers also made tender offers to offensive tackle Max Starks and quarterback Brian St. Pierre.

By making the tenders to Starks and St. Pierre, the Steelers reserve the right to retain the players by matching any offer sheets they would sign with another team. Starks and St. Pierre could also remain with the Steelers by signing their tender offer for 2007 or by signing a long-term contract with the team.

Starks will enter his fourth NFL season in 2007 after being drafted by the Steelers in the third round (75th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft. He has started 30 career games after becoming a full-time starter in 2005. He helped Pittsburgh rank third in the AFC in 2006 in total yards per game (357.8) and aided in Willie Parker's team-record rushing performance (233 rushing yards) in a win over Cleveland in Week 14.

St. Pierre spent nearly the entire 2006 season with Steelers on both the active roster and practice squad. St. Pierre, originally drafted by the Steelers in the fifth round (163rd overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft, has spent three years with Pittsburgh and has also spent time on the Baltimore Ravens' 53-man roster and their practice squad.

The Steelers also released offensive tackle Ulish Booker, who spent the 2006 season on the team's reserve/injured list after hurting his knee in the preseason.

Steelers cut Porter, Haynes to get under the capBy John Clayton
ESPN.com

After two weeks of internal debate, the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to cut ties with one of their most recognized players -- linebacker Joey Porter.

Porter and running back Verron Haynes were released Thursday as the Steelers got under the salary cap. But the decision to release Porter wasn't as much a cap move as it was a change in direction. A three-time Pro Bowl performer, Porter turned 30 on Feb. 27. And with new coach Mike Tomlin taking over for Bill Cowher, the Steelers were looking to go in a different direction with their linebacking corps.

Porter is one of the league's most outspoken players and is willing to verbally challenge opponents. His approach at time did not mesh well with the Steelers' image.

Over the past couple of days, Pittsburgh shopped Porter in trade discussions and there was some interest. In the end, the Steelers decided to give him the chance to find a new team instead of sending him somewhere he might not want to go.

Porter was entering the final year of his contract and there weren't any plans to sign him to an extension. Porter was scheduled to make $5.225 million this season. His release, and Haynes', save the Steelers $6.065 million of cap room.

Because Porter is still a productive player, some people in the organization wanted to keep him. On Thursday, management decided to move on. James Harrison is expected to take over for Porter at outside linebacker.

John Clayton is a senior NFL writer for ESPN.com.

With Porter's persona... the Bengals/Ravens should be first in line to talk to him.

I would think his attitude/persona would be nice to have on our team. It might boost up the competitive spirits a little bit. Sure he's a pain, but enough money can change a person.

Yeah, I could see KW2 and Porter hugging and saying it was just a misunderstanding.

Let's hope this scumbag goes to the NFC, where we don't play him.

Pick him up!

We need that kind of attitude on D. Right now our D has no bite or bark in it. Let's get some bark at the very least.

Doubt it. If the 49ers were thinking about signing Adalius Thomas they are probably re-thinking it now.

Porter is a piece of ish. No way I want him on our team. He's probably been taking roids and HGH to keep him in the game, and they probably cut him because they know his name is going to come up in these most recent drug arrests.

There is no way I would want him on our team. NO WAY.

If he's under fire for the HGH stuff, then I want no part of him.

Otherwise, we NEED a mouth on D. A good percentage of football is mind games. If you get inside people's heads and make yourself appear to be feared, your play increases.

We need to strike fear in opposing O's.

I wouldn't mind Porter on the Browns. He is one of those guys that you hate him if he is an opponent and love him if he is on your team.

He would bring some much-needed attitude to the Browns.

Can we sign Porter, Haynes, Steinbach, and Jamal Lewis and pound our division with their guys?

For some reason, I think that that would be amazing. Pounding our division with their guys.

IF we got Porter, where the hell does he play?

MLB - Davis
MLB - Jackson
OLB - Wimbley
OLB - McGinest/Leon

Unless he plays DE, I have no clue where he would play....

Exactly. The only thing we have to offer (besides money) is a chance to play the Steelers twice a year.

Hmm let's see. Over-aged WillieMac/ inexperienced Leon or Joey Porter.

(best Farley impression)Hmm that's a mystery.

Bump Leon inside, bench Davis and McGinest. That's what you do.

Besides the HGH speculation, it seems like people don't want him cuz he's a loudmouth who's caused us nothing but headaches for years.

That's why I want him.

Leon is already inside. The only time he played out was when he mirrored Vick. I believe the guy who backs up McGinest is Stewart and the guy who backs up Wimbley is McMillan.

I'm not saying he might not be moved to outside because most people think he can play there.

I don't really want Porter but I just thought it was funny he would rather have Willie Mac and Leon over Porter.

I decided to browse around most of the 3-4 teams message boards on footballs future's site and I have to say the majority of people that don't want Porter is quite suprising.

I'm really numb on this,, I didn't expect it at all,,,

I guess it's one of a couple of things

1. Its a release and resign

2. With the talk of that doc that was buying illegal stuff, maybe Joey is the bad guy,,, or the scape goat

3. He's got a problem with the new coach

4. Something totally unrelated to anything I think

I'm betting on 4

Bull. If they had an offer for a trade they would have done it, as opposed to just letting him go. A 7th round pick is better than nothing.

Actually, their looking at it in terms of value. IMO,and its all speculation but i imagine they wanted a first day pick and noone was biting. His salary was steep for 2007 and wanting to get paid handsomely could have been a problem for the bidders.Anyway i look at it,it hurts the Steelers LB core short term, even though i thought he would be moving on after 2007 anyway.

No way in HELL does Savage even negotiate with him. It's a square peg in a round hole. We hate him, he hates us. Not to mention HE IS OVERRATED. He's a loud mouth who gets his numbers during mop-up time. Send his arse to the raiders where he belongs.
