Just got home from a rainy day trip back into the woods checking out some of last years hot spots and I found a handful of mushrooms!!!! I am hoping that I am able to find some more spots this year and early season scores like this leave me pretty hopeful...

My buddy moved back into the area rejoining the kitchen he started in and hopefully he will keep his word and buy a good portion of what I find.

Any other Spring season Morel hunters on here?

Morels are a kind of a delicacy. They are mostly picked in the pacific NW I believe (or at least, that was where my buddy ordered majority of his.). But they can be found across the continent.

They are prized in french cooking, and they can be used to make a mean mushroom ravioli, amongst other dishes.

They are great sauteed in butter and onions for steaks, and have a very earthy and rich taste. I believe that they can cause slight intoxication if eaten raw?? (not sure about that.)

But yea....these aren't the magic kind. They contain no psilocybin (the chief magic chemical/toxin in hallucinogenic mushrooms.)

We primarily eat them with steaks. My buddy uses them in a ravioli dish at the restaurant he works at.

In case anyone is interested in the hunt and wants to go and pick some.....they look like this...

And they are really good at blending in with the forest floor.

Found this on Wiki:

Morels contain small amounts of hydrazine[28] toxins that are removed by thorough cooking; morel mushrooms should never be eaten raw.[29] It has been reported that even cooked morels can sometimes cause mild intoxication symptoms when consumed with alcohol.[30]

When eating this mushroom for the first time it is wise to consume a small amount to minimize any allergic reaction. Morels for consumption must be clean and free of decay.

Morels growing in old apple orchards that had been treated with the insecticide lead arsenate may accumulate levels of toxic lead and arsenic that are unhealthy for human consumption.[31]

I wonder if you could train a bloodhound to find them? I read that they used a certain breed of hog to find truffles in France, but the problem was that the hog would eat them when they found them. They have since learned to train dogs to find them with better results. Some of these truffles can sell for up to $2200 per pound, according to Wikipedia. Heck of a cash crop, if you could cultivate them.

My buddy offered me up to $20 an ounce depending on the time of year and quality.

The idea that they are found fresh locally is his big attraction to them.

Mmmm morels!

Lots of folks here in Indiana go look for them. Local markets will pay around 35$/lb for them too!

I haven't ate the fun kind of mushrooms for some time now, 10 years I think. Would like to try them again.
