ESPN.com has learned that the Denver Broncos have reached agreement in principle on most of the elements of a trade that will send veteran quarterback Jake Plummer to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Plummer Under the terms being discussed, the Broncos would receive a middle-round draft choice, believed to be a fourth-rounder, in exchange for Plummer. The trade could be announced as early as Friday. Tampa Bay re-signed Chris Simms to a two-year contract earlier this offseason. But with Simms coming off a 2006 season in which he underwent an emergency splenectomy, the Bucs have been shopping for a veteran quarterback to bolster the depth chart. Veteran backup Tim Rattay became an unrestricted free agent on Friday and was not expected to return to Tampa Bay. Plummer, 32, lost his starting job in Denver to rookie Jay Cutler late last season and the Broncos have been entertaining trade offers in the offseason. A 10-year veteran, Plummer has started 136 games in stints with Arizona (1997-2002) and Denver (2003-2006). He has completed 2,484 of 4,350 passes for 29,253 yards, with 161 touchdown passes and 161 interceptions, for a passer rating of 74.6. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2785459-------------------------------------------- So much for the CARR to Browns and Jake to Texans talk.

A fourth rounder for Jake Plummer? Seems like a good deal to me. Although, I'm not sure why they want Plummer when they have Simms. Nor do I see why Plummer would want to go there when they have Simms. But whatever. I didn't see Carr coming here anyway. And if he did, I don't think he'd be all that much better than he was in Houston.

Plummer is better than Simms IMO... good move by the Bucs.. especially when they will be having Calvin Johnson to throw too...
only thing though... I think it messes up the chances of the Browns being able to trade down with the Bucs and get a few picks seeing that they are giving up one already..

This is the most interesting part of the article. Perhaps Rattay could be a viable option for the Browns.

They will probably just pick somebody up. Picking up a back-up Qb isnt a real hard thing to do. If Shanahan wants a vet well....Bledsoe just got released.

Apparently it was just flashed on the bottom of the NFL Network that Plummer has retired, nullifying the trade. I'll try to find a link.

Report: QB Plummer to retire NFL.com (March 2, 2007) -- NFL Network's Adam Schefter has learned Denver Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer is expected to announce his retirement. Earlier today, it had been reported that the Broncos agreed to terms on a trade that would send Plummer to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick. That trade is expected to be nullified due to Plummer's decision to retire. Plummer has played 10 seasons in the NFL. A second-round draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 1997, he played six seasons in Arizona before signing with Denver in 2003. He led the Broncos to the 2005 AFC Championship Game, but was replaced as the starter late in the 2006 season by rookie Jay Cutler. http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/DEN/10033012

Wonder how long he has to wait to un-retire ? Too deep in the legal stuff for me to look up. I suspect Jake thinks he's worth more than that and wants a new starting contract somewhere.

No thanks. I just got my answer. Plummer retires instead of going to TB.

This could change the Bucs draft plans as a QB may be in the draft picture again.
Also, there are other FA QBs out there who could be in the mix for the Bucs.

As long as he is still under contract....ie...if the Broncos still had him for 2 years...then he basically has to sit out for two years....unless going through them.....and even then....there is some legal mumbo jumbo where teams are wanting to hold onto rights....like he is ours for 2 more of his FOOTBALL years of life....so even if sitting out for 2 years..and then wanting to come back...a team could fight to say we still own the rights to that player.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=Aj...o&type=lgnsPlummer retires to avoid trade to Tampa Bay By Jason Cole, Charles Robinson and John Murphy March 2, 2007 The Bucs want Jake Plummer, but the feeling isn't mutual. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a deal to acquire the quarterback from Denver on Friday for a fourth-round draft pick in this year's draft. But according to a league source, Plummer has decided to retire, nullifying the deal that would have sent him to Tampa Bay. Plummer apparently was not interested in joining a team which would not name him to an immediate starting spot, which the Buccaneers refused to do. Plummer would have had to battle returning starter Chris Simms for the starting job in Tampa Bay. The deal also could have opened the door for an AFC West battle between the Broncos and Oakland Raiders for the rights to free agent signal caller Jeff Garcia, who has received initial interest from both teams. Plummer lost his job in Denver last season to rookie Jay Cutler after playing inconsistently over the first half of the season. Plummer also fell out of favor with the Broncos during the playoffs in the 2005 season after a poor performance in the AFC championship game against Pittsburgh. The 32-year-old Plummer finished last season with 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 11 starts. Plummer played well in the previous three seasons, throwing 60 touchdowns and 34 interceptions in that span. Plummer seemed to lose his confidence as last season progressed. After losing his starting job, Plummer was upset with how Denver coach Mike Shanahan dealt with the change. Plummer was particularly angry that he received a phone call from his position coach to inform him of the change rather than hearing directly from Shanahan.

Poor choice of words.
Plummer would have had to accept the backup role. They didn't give Simms $5 mil to ride the pines.
I wouldn't want to go there if I were him either.
Now, watch him unretire if the Texans strike virtually the same deal with the Donks.

LOL So it's better to sit at home making nothing than it is to sit on the bench collecting millions?

Yeah, especially sitting on the bench in a warm Florida city collecting those millions....Guess it's tough having so much money you can retire at 32.

He's allready got millions.
When you've made your fortune, you can pick and choose whether or not you can suffer being a backup after being a starter your entire career. He probably has a home and a life in Denver and doesn't want to go out to the East coast. He's a west-coaster who's been told he's been traded to a losing team, he's going to be the backup, and in a part of the country he doesn't care for. It wouldn't be a tough decision for me.
Now, having said all that, I hinted at how this is probably a ploy to get a deal done as a starter with the Texans. He holds all the cards. He can take his ball and go home, thus the Donks get nothing, or they can work out a trade with a team that will make him the starter and get something.
Plummer is set for life and doesn't want to be a backup. If that's more important to him than making more money while being unhappy, more power to him.

Thats a pretty big gamble on his part if he wants to play at all uh ? So he says I'm done, the Donkeys come up with another place he likes better and says.. I changed my mind, think I will play some more. Boy.. can you imagine if all contracts were so easy to nulify ? Love the loopholes these guys have.

It's been reported that he's been talking retirement for awhile now, and that money is of no concern. He lives a quiet life and has plenty of money. Probably doesn't want the hassle of having Chucky screaming and making face at him all year. Can't say I blame him.

The use of the word "gamble" implies that he's risking something. To me, he's not risking anything as his position is clear: I'm a starter or I'm retired. If I can't start I've got a ton of cash and I'm set for life. I'll call it a career.
When you're a vested veteran and nearing the end of the line, you can call your own shots. I'd like that position

PLUMMER RETIREMENT A PLOY?
There's talk/speculation/ in league circles that Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer is using the retirement card as a ploy to get traded to Houston.
Though there was a report a week ago out of Denver that Plummer could pack it in, there was no hard evidence that he might quit until after news broke that Plummer would be traded to the Bucs for a fourth-round pick.
If Plummer retires, he'd potentially owe the team the portion of any signing bonus that applies to the three remaining years of his contract. And the Broncos have a history of playing hardball in matters of this nature -- just ask Dale Carter, Daryl Gardener, Eddie Kennison, and Ashley Lelie.

For what it's worth..... Not much. Here's Don Banks take on Plummer retiring. web page Plummer makes QB carousel spin Veteran's refusal of trade could set off chain reaction Posted: Friday March 2, 2007 1:41PM; Updated: Friday March 2, 2007 1:58PM Jake Plummer lost his starting job with the Broncos midway through last season. If Jake Plummer follows through on his intention to retire and scuttle the reported trade that would have sent him from the Broncos to Bucs in exchange for a 2007 fourth-round draft pick, the move will have an affect on the quarterbacking landscape in the NFL beyond just Denver and Tampa Bay. The aborted deal and its fallout could set off a ripple effect that potentially will have a hand in deciding who plays quarterback this season in Houston and Oakland as well. Here are the ramifications of Plummer's decision as they now appear: • If Plummer retires or eventually reports to Tampa Bay, any chance of the ex-Broncos starter replacing David Carr in Houston would be dead. The Texans made it known last month that they would entertain trade offers for Carr, the former No. 1 overall draft pick who has struggled for most of his five seasons with the expansion team. As part of the trade talks involving Carr, the Texans were intent on pursuing Plummer as their first choice as a replacement. Plummer's best three seasons in the NFL came under the tutelage of Gary Kubiak, when the Houston head coach was Denver's offensive coordinator. With Plummer likely not an option either way, the Texans are, according to a source close to the situation, "highly likely'' to retain Carr and actively dismiss any further speculation about his future in Houston. Unless, of course, this is Plummer's way of forcing a trade to the Texans, perhaps the only team Plummer is willing to play for this year. "I think they recognize at this point that (Carr) is their best option,'' the source said. "Their thought all along seemed to be that Jake Plummer was a decent stop-gap option for a year or two, given that Kubiak knew him from Denver. But I don't think there was ever the thinking in Houston that they had to move Carr this offseason.'' QB carousel (cont.) Posted: Friday March 2, 2007 1:41PM; Updated: Friday March 2, 2007 1:58PM • Upon striking a deal to obtain Plummer, the Bucs appeared to no longer be one of the teams that would pursue former Eagle Jeff Garcia, shrinking his free-agent options by one despite a renaissance late-season performance in leading Philadelphia into the playoffs. Now that's all on hold. Tampa Bay, Oakland and Denver were the teams most interested in Garcia at the start of free agency, with the Bucs considered the most likely suitor to ante up close to starter's money. The Bucs re-signed Chris Simms at $5 million for 2007, and assured him that he would begin the year as their starter. But Tampa Bay is believed to have some $20 million of available cap room at the start of free agency and thus was expected to be able to give Garcia a short-term deal similar to Simms' contract. Instead, Tampa Bay went after Plummer in trade, and believed it had a deal nearly consummated Friday morning until he was informed of the move and balked at joining Jon Gruden's team. If the Bucs can get Plummer to reconsider his retirement stance, that development would most benefit the Raiders, who wound then be in the drivers seat in their pursuit of Garcia. Oakland is expected to offer Garcia a salary that splits the difference between backup and starter's money, reflecting what would likely be a one-year window of starting opportunity in Oakland. The Raiders are almost certain to draft either LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell or Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn with their first overall pick in April's draft, and thus will make a sizeable financial commitment to their future starter later this spring. If Garcia's market boils down to Oakland or Denver, where he would be backing up second-year pro Jay Cutler and replacing Plummer, his best chance to start would be with the Raiders, whose offensive coordinator Greg Knapp, had several successful seasons with Garcia in San Francisco. • If Plummer vetoes the deal and retires, the Bucs backup quarterback situation for the time being appears right back where it was 24 hours ago. Tampa Bay promised Simms the first crack at retaining the starting job when they signed him to a late-season extension, but the Bucs are seeking an upgraded veteran option as well, in light of Simms missing most of last season after an emergency splenectomy. Tampa Bay allowed backup Tim Rattay to enter free agency Friday, and he is not expected to return to the team.
And the next head coach is ......
