Our 37 for their 2, 4, and 5 would come out pretty close to even.

A few teams have been giving up next year's one to get a high 2nd over the past few years. Throw your value chart out the window, because it's worthless and every team has their own chart that probably doesn't look anything like yours.

We probably couldn't get a 5th out of it, but I guarantee you we get a 3rd. Hell I bet the Pats get 48 this year and a possible 1st next year from the raiders.

yes, you discount the value of next year's pick by 1 round. so next year's 1st rounder is worth this year's 2nd rounder. Honestly, I would gladly take that and said so above.

As for throwing out the table, I am sure that every team does have some slightly variant form of it, but it is a handy guideline to see if a trade is completely 1-sided.

Can a team afford 2 possibly high 1st round draft picks plus a mid-to-late one...not sure of the draft budget concerns there

If not ... they can always trade a pick for later picks either later in the draft or push it to the next year ... or maybe we take 2 of those firsts and trade up for Luck / Barkely if McCoy isn't the answer ...?

a teams draft budget is setup based on where they picked in the draft, so yes we could though we may have to cut salary from the normal part of the cap to do so.

this is assuming the draft budget system stays relatively the same, that the cap system stays relatively the same, and that draft picks make enough money next year to even matter on the cap (those numbers are likely coming way down afterall)

Like the pick a lot. Solidifying the DL is more important than a WR, but we still have #59 to either go DL again or WR, or elsewhere.

Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital.

We sure as hell picking DL this draft. Okay, we got the run stuffer then we got the pass rusher. Now we need us some offense.

2011 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

person
Jabaal Sheard, DE, Pittsburgh
Until his senior campaign, Jabaal Sheard was often overshadowed by fellow defensive end Greg Romeus. Even now, few are paying that much attention to the 6-4, 260 pounder. However, that will change if Pittsburgh continues to improve what was a struggling defense. The Panthers are the only team in the Big East without a conference loss and if they keep winning, people will start paying attention with a BCS bid on the line.
Sheard is a three year starter who has been amazingly consistent. In 2008 he tallied 45 tackles, 10.5 tackles-for-loss and 5.5 sacks. A year later (as a junior) he totaled 42 tackles, 10.5 tackles-for-loss and 5.0 sacks. The problem was Romeus took away most of the headlines and Sheard was the unheralded complimentary player who benefited from Romeus being on the other side of the line. That changed in 2010 when Romeus went out with an injury. Sheard stepped up his game and helped turn around the defense. Through seven games he already has 30 tackles, 10.0 tackles-for-loss and 7.0 sacks.

Sheard is now considered by many as a better NFL prospect than Romeus. He is not as big, but he is just as strong and he is much more technically astute. What he may lack in pure skills, Sheard makes up for with intelligence and technique. If he keeps producing and has some decent workouts leading up to the draft, Sheard should not fall past the third round. If he physically performs better than expected, he could possibly even sneak into the first round.

1/25 Update: With Romeus on the sidelines for most of the season, Sheard took advantage and tallied 9.0 sacks, 14.5 tackles-for-loss and 15 quarterback hurries. The senior even forced a team high four fumbles. As a result, Sheard won the Big East Defensive Player of the Year honors and was named to a variety of All-Conference and All-America teams. Sheard did miss the BBVA Compass bowl with a minor injury and opted to have surgery to have time to heal before the pre-draft workouts instead of playing in the January 8th game.

4/8 Update: Sheard did not blow anybody away with his numbers at the NFL combine or Pittsburgh's pro day, but he did show that he is a balanced pass rusher who has the tenacity to make a big play every time the ball is snapped. The problem is he does not look like a traditional defensive end. He is small for an end in a 4-3 scheme and not athletic enough to be the typical pass rusher in a 3-4 defense. Yet, the fact is he can get to the quarterback and NFL teams are not overly concerned with his measurables. It would be a surprise at this point to see Sheard fall past the second round.

I honestly would not be surprised if we go DE again the the 2nd ..... then try to trade back into the 3rd for a WR.

No kidding. His knee must look like junk for him to drop like he is. I like the sheard pick. Solid player from the sounds of it.

I can't believe that he got by New England. I figured he was gone there for sure.

I really, really like this pick.

I really like this pick too. We have done some work on the D-Line. Hopefully both these guys can eventually somehow start this season.

Next pick, I'm hoping for a RT. May be this Gilbert character from Florida. Then look into trading into the third if a decent receiver/safety/linebacker may be is available

Like that Heckert is focusing on the D.

Anyone think there would be an uproar if Heckert took a chance, and pulled the trigger on Bowers, if he is there at 59?

For as much as people didn't like Mangini, I did like the fact that he made rookies EARN the right for PT and/or starting. I hope Shurmer has some stones like that as well (not just lip service) as Roth and Bernard can play

What if Roth isn't here?

I don't think we tendered him, did we?

Solid that he has focused on the D-line, an obvious need with the change over to the 4-3. At this point you have to start to think that Bower's knee is really an issue.

An uproar? At pick #57? I think most people would be thrilled with taking a chance on a top 5 worthy pick that has injury concerns.

While I'd throw the dice on him, you have to wonder if Heckert is a bit gun shy from the Hardesty pick last year.

If they think he needs microfracture surgery, then teams are going to be really wary.

Talent doesn't matter if teams think that he won't be healthy.

It's not only Heckert who has passed on Bowers but so have all the other teams so there is a red flag going on, is it just the knee? Who knows.

DE was a need on most of the draft websites I saw...Personally, I see Martez Wilson, Mikel Lashoure, Rodney Hudson, or Ben Ijalana

Detroit could be a player this year. Their fortunes depend on Stafford.

Torrey Smith doesn't seem like a WCO receiver based on what I've read...I see Hankerson or Little being better fits

im not sure i like this pick...Sheard...

this is the kinda guy you pick if Mangini was still here...he is too small to be a every down 4-3 DE and he lacks the run stopping required of a 3-4 OLB.....if this guy "fits anywhere" its at 3-4 OLB....this guys is a tweener all the way.....he belongs in a 3-4....

also...this should have been the spot we went against the grain and took the best WR on the board...our WR core stinks...we could have really injected some speed and talent at Wr with this pick...

again just my opinion...i hope it works...but i don't see this kid as a 4-3 DE...this dude lacks strength and bulk he is going to get run over....over pursuit and failing to hold an edge in the run game was the knock on this kid....your De have got to be able to set an edge for the 4-3 to work...i don't see this kid having the size to do that.

he will be an above average pass rusher, but this kid will be a major liability against the run.
