I bet that we bring in a bunch of UDFA, and go from there.

We currently have 73 players on the roster, minus the RFA who will not be back .. plus the draftees.

I also think that we'll get a couple of those guys back.

We also generally bring in about 10 UDFA to camp. That should just about fill out our training camp roster.

One other thing to remember ..... we actually have some (assumed) free agents who will be attractive to other teams. If we limit our signings to very low level guys .... or maybe even no UFA at all, then we might qualify for compensatory draft picks in next year's draft .... a draft in which we already have an extra 1st and 4th.

well with a numbers game though, we already brought in 8 guys through the draft, and I would hope that we can still sign a few undrafted free agents.

But I would like to see a healthy addition of veteran free agents (healthy being 1 or 3 that can hold down the spot until a young guy takes over while actually even being a playmaker now... similar to Sheldon and Fujita last year). I wouldn't mind seeing 1 lineman come in, but I honestly don't see it happen.

In the eyes of our front office, they might see some combination of Lauvao and Pinkston with Yates, Womack, St. Clair as healthy for the right side? Am I missing someone?

I would actually like to see any additions to come in the form of the d-line. Kiwinuka would be solid. Maybe Mebane from seattle? Didn't Holmgren draft him?

I'd wait to see if Pinkston makes the team first... I'm betting that he starts the year on the Practice Squad.

Pinkston will not be put on the practice squad, because he would be scooped up by another team in an instant.

Exactly.

I agree.

Pinky was maybe the 6th or 7th top prospect at the tackle position.

We will keep him active unless he totally bombs in camp.

He may not be our RT answer, but he might be our RG....

Sometimes you take who is available.

People were moaning when guys like Jim Bundren were starting, saying we had no depth behind that.

Well, maybe this guys turns out to be a depth pick....so what.

I have no doubt he can be a pretty good player....when's the last time we went 2-3 years without a offensive lineman injured.

Good pick. For the moaners....stop. Sorry guys.....everybody you draft isn't going to be all-pro.......not even a starter for that matter.

This draft makes us better....

The idea that drafting a RT/OG hybrid in the 5th round somehow clears up our hole at RT for this year is laughable...

There's a 50/50 shot he doesn't even make the team. Of our three 5th round and later picks last year, only one made the final cut. One out of three the year before too.

I'm curious, How many OT's were taken in this draft before Pinkston? I haven't paid much attention to it this year because I didn't feel it was a position they would upgrade.
I'm guessing it was few, and I remember a year when there was a run on O-linemen in the late 1st round, where a 5th rd OT from that year would be a lesser pick of the litter, so to speak.

He was the 13th OT off of the board.

I guess in that case we should cut Pashos and Womack since we just got our RT.

You guys are ridiculous - you don't pick your Free agency strategy based on what you did with a 5th round draft pick. Odds say he'll probably get cut. Maybe he won't. But he probably won't be active. Maybe he will, but he probably won't play. Maybe he will, but he probably won't start. Maybe he will - but he probably won't be any good.

I am willing to give both another year. Kinda have to now, since it apparently wasn't an FO concern. I hope either or both pan out and Lauvao comes along hard. If Pinkston fits in, fine. I don't look for it to happen overnight. I would have found a way to have drafted Carimi.

General reply

I would like to see us go after Thomas Davis but I dont expect a lot of free agency signings this year. I think we could see a few trades however. We have players that may no longer fit in our scheme that could have value for other teams.

Pinkston was drafted to play guard. Lauvao will be starting at guard. Steiny's size and contract could make him expendable. Pashos is our RT, I may not like it and you guys may not like it but he is our starting RT. I think Womack will be back as his backup.

Our WR group should be complete but aged WCO looking for one last shot will be brought in to help the youngsters.

RB we have 2 and will probably bring in 2 or 3 undrafteds and or free agents.

FB We may carry 2. Vickers could very well be back

TE we are set

DT we still need help. I might try to get dorsey out of KC. He doesnt fit their 3-4. Mebane would be a good addition also and he is a Holmgren guy.

DE This position is wide open. Sheard and Benard appear to be our starters atm. Room to upgrade and depth is needed as well.

Linebackers we have 15 and maybe 4 or 5 actually fit. 3-4 teams will be calling for Gocong and Fujita.

Secondary is pretty much set if Elam returns but he may not be back and that means we need a true ball hawker in the secodary. Wonder if Buster Skrine could make the move to safety. Sounds like he has speed and athleticism to play the position. Jauron loves speed.

Agreed, except I think we keep Steinbach at least this year, because while we drafted a possible replacement, we don't have one at the moment. Also, the left side of our line was outstanding last year, and it's too risky to mess with it.

Does Dorsey fit our system either? It really seems like Jauron likes going for 2-gap DTs, which is why I think an Alan Branch or Gabe Watson is a better fit (and likely cheaper too). If we'd have wanted a Dorsey type DT, we would have gone back up farther and gotten Fairley (or drafted him at 6 in the first place).

No way Skrine plays safety, he's an undersized nickelback who is useless in run support. We could potentially move Sheldon Brown over.

We generally sign around a dozen UDFA or so following the draft. (in a normal year)

Depending on how many of our RFA we tendered, we might have to drop someone just to sign draft picks. The roster limit is what .. 80 in the pre-season? We have 73 counting free agents .... plus our draft picks.

Also, for whatever it's worth, Pinkston was drafted as a Tackle. It was said that he will probably move from LT to the right side in the NFL.

I suspect that his future is at RT.

I also agree that we'll re-sign Mitchell and a few others if we can.

I wish I liked one Wr on this team, I guess my favorite would be a 1st round Carlton Mitchell type player instead of the 6, or 7th rounder he was. The team keeps going with one mold at the position, that I don't like, and I always hear about this ability to make yards after the catch.

I would rather see a quarterback make a throw to a player who gets downfield before the catch, I'm tired of all this short pass stuff that doesn't stretch the field because, no matter how well you break tackles, as soon as you catch it, the other teams swarms to you.

It's best just to throw over the top of them and beat them deep, or at least make them cover deep, so they can't stack the box, and when your behind the defense with nobody between you and the end zone,

Then it doesn't matter how well you can break tackles!

What RT's r gonna b available in FA when it starts?

2011 NFL Free Agent Offensive Linemen
By: Roshan Bhagat

Tyson Clabo (ATL) – Clabo has formed one half of Atlanta’s dominant run-blocking right side. He’s a nasty, physical run blocking tackle who has developed into a steady pass blocker as well. Though the Falcons have several key components of their offensive line set to hit free agency this offseason, none will be more important than ensuring that Ryan stays upright than Clabo. Entering the league as an undrafted free agent, Clabo will be set to strike a lucrative deal.

Doug Free (DAL) – After parting ways with lifelong Cowboy, Flozell Adams, the Cowboys may have found their left tackle for the next decade in Doug Free. He isn’t quite the same run blocker, but he’s proven to be a significant upgrade in pass protection over what Adams has been the last several years. Free has 7 false starts this year, but has also only allowed 5 sacks. If he can clean up the mental problems, he should be a great blindside pass protector for many years in Dallas.

Jared Gaither (BAL) – Though rumors last offseason had Jared Gaither on the trade block, Gaither has proclaimed his desire to return to the Ravens next season. A back injury sidelined him for the entirety of this season and allowed Michael Oher to move into left tackle, where he’ll likely settle in. The injury may potentially allow the Ravens to pay Gaither as a right tackle, increasing the likelihood the organization brings him back.

Jammal Brown (WAS) – With rookie Trent Williams playing the left side, Jammal Brown has started on the right side for the first time since his rookie year. He struggled early in the season as he recovered from injury, but has since turned around his play. He’s a far cry from where he was in his prime, but the Redskins have had success running the ball behind him. The organization hasn’t shied away from spending money on players, but they could get a bargain in Brown, if he continues his upward ascension from injury.

Matt Light (NE) – Light will be 33 next season and coming off his worst season in several years giving up double digit sacks on the left side. 2nd year right tackle Sebastian Vollmer is coming off an All-Pro caliber season at right tackle and has proven capable of stonewalling pass rushers from the left side as well. The aging Matt Light finally seems expendable after giving Tom Brady nearly a decade of great protection.

Jermon Bushrod (NO) – Bushrod hasn’t been nearly as effective at left tackle this season as he was as a fill-in for Jammal Brown a season ago. He’s been average in both pass protection and run-blocking and has 6 false start penalties as well. With offensive guard Carl Nicks set to hit free agency as well, the Saints will likely worry more about their Pro Bowl caliber left guard before getting to Bushrod, especially if they believe Charles Brown is the eventual left tackle for the offense.

Willie Colon (PIT) – Colon had started 50 consecutive games for the Steelers at right tackle with improvement each year before missing all of 2010 with a torn Achilles. He was the team’s best blocker in 2009 and has surprisingly traveled with the organization for each of their games. With an offensive line that has been decimated by injury, the reunion of Colon and Pittsburgh in 2011 seems likely.

Other Notable Free Agents:
Alex Barron (DAL)
Ryan Harris (DEN)
Corey Hilliard (DET)
Rashad Butler (HOU)
Charlie Johnson (IND)
Ryan O'Callaghan (KC)
Pat McQuistan (MIA)
Ryan Cook (MIN)
Zach Strief (NO)
Wayne Hunter (NYJ)
Khalif Barnes (OAK)
Langston Walker (OAK)
Mario Henderson (OAK)
Trai Essex (PIT)
Jonathan Scott (PIT)
Jeromey Clary (SD)
Barry Sims (SF)
Sean Locklear (SEA)
Adam Goldberg (STL)
John Greco (STL)
Jeremy Trueblood (TB)
Stephon Heyer (WAS)

New CBA with new FA rules=Most will be UFA's...If they go the 4 or 5 year way...

If this Lockout is lifted and they make the rules from 2010???...Which is what I believe will happen as soon as this week...Only guys with 6 years r gonna be UFA's...That list shrinks big time...

Guys like Mebane/Clabo/Charles Johnson won't be UFA's...Now teams have to start hitting these guys with the proper tenders for the RFA's such as Clabo...

As soon as these yo-yos figure it out someone will update that list...

I just wonder if Heckert would use that 1st rounder we got from Atlanta to go after a RFA with a 1st round tender...

I am not sure how that would work with 2 first round picks.

Can you designate which or would you have to use your natural pick??

Agreed. We plugged some holes, and I think more current roster might be gone if we had more picks. Their #1 might not net us a monster starter, but I am betting we will be hungry to use that pick next year, even if it is to leverage a trade up for a high caliber guy early. Spending it now might be a colossal waste. Hats off to Heckert if some of these are keepers who get after it.

I'd like to re-sign Mitchell and Roth if possible. Obviously it's going to take time with Roth because he will want to see what he can get in FA, but if we give him a better deal than what's out there (which I'm down with, depending on what it is) I'd rather have him than Kiwi. I'd rather have Charles Johnson than Kiwi too. But I think Johnson will be much more expensive than Roth.

I like Matt Roth a lot. He's a ferocious player. He slowed down at the end of the year last year, which makes me suspect injury, but he has shown me enough that I'd love to have him back in a 3 or 4 man DE rotation with Shear and Benard. He definitely could put his hand down and excel, bullrushing the DE's and containing the run. We could line him up on the left side (where the RT would be), and I think he'd show himself to be very valuable. On passing packages (3rd and long or something), we can put in Benard or Mitchell. Plus you've got have a rotation of at least 3 D-Linemen at both positions. One on either side and a sub.

I just have a lot more faith in Roth than Benard. Roth's pass rush skills are decent, and he's good against the run. Why pay big bucks from Kiwuanuka when we could keep Matt Roth. I live in NY and Kiwi is a decent DE, but he's not star caliber. He's got pass rush skills, but Matt Roth is a far better run defender while also being able to get some pressure on the QB.

sadly, I don't think we have a shot at Roth. He made it pretty clear that he thinks of himself as a 3-4 OLB in the past. I don't think he will want to be a 4-3 DE unless we make it really worth his while ($$$ we shouldn't pay him to make a questionable transition btw).

He played DE in college. It's not like he hasn't done it. And I havent seen him say, I am a better OLB than DE or that he wants to play 3-4 OLB. He might say he enjoys it, but he can enjoy other things too.........

And it wasn't like Roth was Adalius Thomas, playing a lot of coverage (and Adalius Thomas was a good DE and OLB). Roth jams the TE then runs at the QB, rushes the QB, or else he chases down the guy with the ball. Plenty of 3-4 OLB's can also play DE. I don't see why Matt Roth can't do it. And 4-3 DE is less complicated than 3-4 OLB IMO. The transition to 3-4 OLB (when you were a 4-3 DE in college).is much more difficult I would imagine than 3-4 OLB, who plays like Roth, to a DE.

Besides, the average DE gets paid more than an OLB (I think). That has to please Matt Roth. I like Matt Roth, he's a football player. I'd like to at least try to give him an offer, let him go look at other offers, and if he likes ours he can come back to us

FWIW, he sucked as a 43 DE in Miami....I doubt he fits what Jauron wants at DE...he would be a better fit at SOLB than DE but he isn't a fit for that neither...I'm not sure I want him back simply because I don't see him fitting

So for years they didn't have the players to play the 3-4, now all their players only fit in the 3-4 and they're switching to the 4-3

2nd. We have a dozen years to see the WCO dosen't work vs our division, yet everyone seems in love with and romanticizing the WCO.

Sounds like the Browns are shooting themselves in both feet!

one of those posters you would have gotten into a disagreement with could have been me

The Browns seem to be comfortable with the OL which is why no O-linemen were drafted earlier. Pinkston is, tentatively, the replacement for St. Clair. I don't see any FA moves on the horizon to replace Pashos. Too many here discount him. Which free agents available are better than he? The Ratbirds will let Gaither walk? Let's be realistic. BTW, I'm not sold on Jamaal Brown. I watched his play a lot this past season.Unimpressive.

If we were to start play right now the OL would look like this:

LT Thomas
LG Steinbach
C Mack
RG Lauvao
RT Pashos

Bench:
Vallos C/G
Pinkston T

My gut feeling is that both Yates and Womack will be offered contracts and return. That scenario is essentially trading St. Clair for Pinkston in the off-season. Besides, no rookie tackle drafted in a mid-round will be better than Pashos. IMO we have more pressing FA needs elsewhere.

The WCO doesn't work against our division?

Didn't Green Bay just win a super bowl against Pittsburgh with it or am I missing something?

So if you are hired to run a bank, you bring in bank managers who have run the bank before in other locations, recruited college talent of finance and accounting people, and understand exactly how to compete in the banking world ... but your bank's location is going to be where an old mcdonalds was ... should everyone at the top learn how to serve fries?

You have a valid point, but I'd rather let the coaches and scouts do what they are best at ... rather than trying to get them to fit into a new scheme. God knows we have seen enough of that for the past decade.

Free agents I think are worth looking into . . .

Right Tackle
Tyson Clabo - Atlanta
Marshal Yanda - Baltimore (also plays guard)
Sean Locklear - Seattle
Ryan Harris - Denver (injury risk)

Defensive End
Ray Edwards - Minnesota (would be expensive)
Mathias Kiwanuka - NY Giants (how injured?)
Charles Johnson - Carolina (they'll probably keep him)
Vernon Ghoulston - NY Jets (better be cheap / worth a shot?)

Defensive Tackle
Barry Cofield - NY Giants (would be expensive)
Brandon Mebane - Seattle
Stephen Bowen - Dallas
Tony McDaniel - Miami (cheap / rotational)
Antonio Johnson - Indianapolis (cheap / rotational)

Safety
Eric Weddle - San Diego (would be expensive)
Michael Huff - Oakland
Dashon Goldson - San Francisco (how injured?)

Running Back
Michael Bush - Oakland
Darren Sproles - San Diego
Jason Snelling - Atlanta
Tim Hightower - Arizona
Brandon Jackson - Green Bay

Outside Linebacker
Manny Lawson - San Francisco
Rocky McIntosh - Washington
James Anderson - Carolina
Stephen Nicholas - Atlanta
Quincy Black - Tampa Bay
Clint Session - Indianapolis (how injured?)
Thomas Howard - Oakland
Brandon Johnson - Cincinnati

Inside Linebacker
Stephen Tulloch - Tennessee (would be expensive)
Paul Posluzny - Buffalo (they'll probably keep him)
Kevin Burnett - San Diego
Kirk Morrison - Jacksonville
Stewart Bradley - Philadelphia

Wide Receiver
Lance Moore - New Orleans
James Jones - Green Bay
Jacoby Jones - Houston

The name that really sticks out is Jacoby Jones. I just don't know if we have room for him. Massaquoi, Robiske, Cribbs, and Little. That's four WR's right there and we still have Mitchell, Haggerty, and Norwood.

Also, don't forget Jared Gaither is probably going to be a free agent. I'd take him over any of the tackles you listed, but he'd be much more expensive.

A lot of your list depends on the new restricted free agency rules.

I thought Gaither was a major risk because of his back injury. Of course I haven't exactly checked up on that . . .
