According to this site http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/playoffrace, the Browns have not been mathematically eliminated yet. I got ran out of town for posting like this at this time last year too, but I'm just trying to take care of any wondering optimists out there,...

That kinda reminds me of that line from Dumb and Dumber where Jim Carrey asks that girl if there is a chance she would go out with him and she says it's like one in a million. So Jim says something like "Well then what you're saying is that I have a chance. Im hearing ya!"
I'm hearing ya, just not feeling ya!

I don't think, since the division realignment, that any 8-8 team has made the playoffs?

Of course not,....it wouldn't happen that way anyhow. It would take our 8-8 record with the Bengals going 7-9.
So no, 3 teams won't make it.

If I have it right, I think Cincy, Denver and Jacksonville all have to lose out, (other teams have to loose anywhere from 1-2 games,) and we have to win out in order to make it. Slim, but anything's possible.

Uh....we have 8 eight losses, we are not sniffing the playoffs this season or any other with 8 eight losses; no team will ever again make the playoffs with 8 eight losses.

You're probably correct, BUT, the odds of it happening again are greatly encouraged and influenced by two factors---(1) the NFL's continued, but unintended, drive toward parity>>>there are only 2 teams--in this,..WEEK 14--that have been bounced by the math, and (2) the eight, 4 team division setup, where a really weak division in any given year could spit out an 8-8 team, who say, won its division tiebreakers by going 4-2. That's pretty much what happened to the Browns in 85.
Now getting in TODAY at 8-8, with all of the teams who are already sitting on seven wins or better, WOULD be very improbable.

You don't watch the NFC much do ya?
in 2004, the 6th seed Wildcard team was 8-8, and it's a very real possibility for this year as well. Granted the Giants & Carolina have only 6 & 5 losses respectively, but the other two teams in the Wildcard hunt over there already have 7 losses. If Philly pulls the upset tonight, the odds get a whole lot better

Alright friends,...I'm back. For those of you that like it simple, when Denver AND Cincinnati both win another game, the Browns are OUT. For those who like to dream, read on,...
None of you are going to believe this, but I went ahead and made out the spreadsheet anyway. Check this out,...
Team (Record) Games remaining
New York Jets (7-5) Buffalo Minnie Miami Oakland
Cincinnati (7-5) Oakland Indy Denver Pittsburgh
Kansas City (7-5) Baltimore SanD Oakland Jax
Denver (7-5) SanD Arizona Cinc SanFran
Jax (7-5) Indy Tenn New Eng KC
Buffalo (5-7) NYJets Miami Tenn Baltimore
Miami (5-7) New Eng Buff NYJets Indy
Pittsburgh (5-7) Cleve Carolina Baltimore Cincy
Tennessee (5-7) Houston Jax Buff New Eng
Houston (4-8) Tenn New Eng Indy Cleve
Cleveland (4-8) Pitts Baltimore TBay Houston
Now, assume for the sake of assuming, whatever I say goes
<hold your breath> Of the five teams that already have 7 wins, only 2 of them hold the tiebreakers with the Browns,...Denver (Hd-t-Hd) and Cincy (2-0). They both cannot go 7-9 because they play each other, so one has to go to the playoffs, and the other is out. (At this point, assume their game will not end in a tie, i.e both of them going 7-8-1, ain't gonna happen),.....Assume the likelihood of Oakland winning @ Cincy this week is higher than Denver losing to both San Fran and Arizona. So Denver is the # 5 seed. They win out and go 11-5.
<take a deep breath> Cincy loses out and goes 7-9, Jax loses out and goes 7-9. Kansas City's only win is Jax, and goes 8-8. The Jets lose out and go 7-9.
The five-win teams---Buffalo, Miami, Pittsburgh and Tennessee---can all win either 1 or 2 games of their four, ending with 7-9 or 6-10 records, but Buffalo must beat ONLY the Jets and Miami, Miami's only win can be the Jets, Tennessee can ONLY beat Jax and Buffalo, and the Steelers must beat Cincy (already mentioned above). IF we were to finish in a tie with Steelers at 8-8, the Browns hold the better conference record (6-6 vs 5-7), assuming it's only a 3-way tie. KC has lost to both us and the Steelers. They would be out.
Finally, Houston must beat Tennesse this weekend. This scenario, very far-fetched mostly because it calls for the Raiders to win 3 of their next 4 against Cincy, KC and the Jets, leaves the Browns in either a two-way tie with the Chiefs, or a 3-way with the Steelers in there. It comes down to the Chiefs game, because we need them to beat Jax. We win the 2-way with the Chiefs, head-to head, and the 3-way with them and the Steelers.
This is only ONE possibility; there are OTHERS. Call me crazy, I don't care,...I do this every year at this time and it keeps me entertained. And somebody was watching me in 1985 in Okinawa when I did it, and it worked. If only one of you appreciates my effort, then it is worth it.
If you want a copy of the spreadsheet, PM me and I'll e-mail it to you.
You can call me moron all you want. I love numbers and possibilities--notice I didn't say "probabilities."

Very interesting indeed. I could see the Raiders winning against CIN, KC, and NYJ, what? Couldn't you????
But if we won out and finished 8-8, I'd probably feel like we won the Super Bowl, playoffs or not
